Thank you! I played in a band with my buddies in the 90s and I just wanted the usual rock covers so we could play club gigs and get people dancing, The musicians were pros and I was the singer. Couldn't sing but put on a good show. Wer added Girls Talk & they gave me a tape with all the new songs on it. 1st practice and we kept screwing Girls Talk up. Its got a weird arrangement with 3s instead of 4s and the usual verse, verse solo, verse wasn't it. The repeats were weird and there are 7 "girls talk" repeats in the outro before the ya yas (and 3, not 4 of those). We wasted an hour on it till we got it right 3 times in a row then moved on. Never played it right, or the same live, I even had a music stand with the lyrics and notes on a big card! We finally decided that I woud sing it best I could and they would just follow me whever I went.
Flash foward to the 90s? Our band had long since retired. Get a call from my guitar player. Tells me Dave Edmonds has a pick up band and is playing a couple sets at this bar in Agoura! He even got me a blind date! We go, my buddy is a great collector and brings records for Dave to sign. During a break he goes to Dave and gets him to sign the stuff. Dave is a really, great guy! Actually touched that Mike has this stuff! He joins our table and were drinking beer....I say I have a question. My buddy says No! Don't! I ask him about the weird arrangement of Girls Talk. He patiently explains it, but he spoke in technical terms and I kind of followed it but was still puzzled, I told him we tried to play it and he asked if we were crazy. I asked him if they were going to play it tonight and he said no, that these guys were just friends and he was playing easy stuff, he knew the guy who owned the club and they were pals and he was just helping out. Cool guy,
He left to go on stage and I looked at my buddy and said "IN YER FACE!!! ARE WE CRAZY!!!!A RELEASE BEFORE THE CODA???SHUFFLE TRANSITION????HAAAAAAA!!!! etc.
Eh, ignored my blind date. She got pissed, Mike's girlfiend was pissed. Mike just shook his head and drank.
All in all....a great night! A Dave played/sang great with that band,,,that was way better than our band,,,,yet they couldn't be trusted with Girls Talk. Good set, though. A Great night! Thanks Dave, wherever you are.

When the new wave (old wave?) stuff began to hit the airwaves in the States in the late 70s, the radio played two of Dave Edmunds songs - Girls Talk, which for some unknown reason the radio jocks attributed to Graham Parker, and Crawling From the Wreckage which was credited to Edmunds - but written by Parker. I found it impossible to buy any of these records in the States which was very frustrating. I never got my hands on his stuff until after 1990 when it was all released on CD. Most of my family members over the years tolerate my taste in music, but I think I must be the only one that loves Crawling From The Wreckage. I just related to the angry pissed off tone - that and Edmunds and Costello. I saw Elvis on Saturday Night Live and hated him, but weeks later I started hearing the same songs on the radio and went out and bought his debut album. Actually my favorite Edmunds song is DEBORAH, with elements of "I Fought The Law" in the chords. And my favorite Costello song is MYSTERY DANCE, 95 seconds of honest to god rock and roll. It also is kinda like Jailhouse Rock. But faster. Those late 70s punkers really lit me up. They were the antithesis of so-called, retro-named "yacht rock". Yet. I am a huge Steely Dan fan, was then, am now, have seen them live four times. Maybe some of the stuff Elvis and Dave were doing was a "take that Donald Fagen and your studio perfection!!" Or not. I love them all.

    Lyrics
There are some things you can't cover up
    With lipstick and powder
Thought I heard you mention my name
    Can't you talk any louder?
    Don't come any closer
    Don't come any nearer
    My vision of you
    Can't come any clearer
Oh I just want to hear girls talk
    Got a loaded imagination
    Bein' fired by girls talk
It's a more or less situation
    Inspired by girls talk
    But I can't say
The words you want to hear
I suppose you're gonna have to
Play it by ear, right here
    And now, girls talk
And they want to know how girls talk
And they say it's not allowed, girls talk
If they say that it's so
Don't they think that I'd know by now?
Got the word up on everyone's lipstick
    That you're getting faded
You may not be an old-fashioned girl
    But you're gonna get dated
    "Was it really murder?"
    "Were you just pretending?"
    "Lately I've heard..."
    "You are the living end"
    Girls talk
And they want to know how girls talk
And they say it's not allowed, girls talk
And they think they know how girls talk
If they say that it's so
Don't they think that I'd now by now?
    But I can't say
The words you want to hear
I suppose you're gonna have to
Play it by ear, I hear
There are some things you can't cover up
    With lipstick and powder
But I heard you mention my name
    Can't you talk any louder?

I saw Dave Edmunds at the 101 Club, London, back in the mid-80's. This band is very close to who he had then: he definitely had the same guitarist, I remember her was small, bald, and played a very old, butterscotch Telecaster. For the encore Jimmy Vaughan and Kim Wilson from the Fabulous Thunderbirds joined Dave and the boys for an extended Chuck Berry song, Promised Land (the Tbirds had played the 101 club the night before). I will never forget when the song had ended after about 15 minutes, the bald guitarist was shaking his left hand while smiling and looking at Jimmy Vaughan as if, "whew, that was tough!", good naturedly, and Jimmy Vaughan just have him a withering look, like "you punk..." I'll never forget it. I came away thinking that Jimmy Vaughan was a bit of a dickhead.
