The casinos set themselves up for this. Wherever you hear the term "flow of cards" it refers to the sequence of cards in a stacked deck and casino personnel often refer to the disruption of the "flow of cards" by card counters. They stack the decks because it's the only way to set up a winning seat (and a reason for others to lose their money) at every table. The thing to remember is that Blackjack is a game of memory. The point is to remember every card that's been dealt and, on top of that, maintain an awareness of the remaining cards and their odds of being dealt. Blackjack, played according to the actual rules of the game (as found in any book on cardgames, not the various casino "rules") is good preparation for more sophisticate cardgames such as Gin/Conga and Bridge. However, what happens when card counters enter the casino blackjack game is that you now have a witness to the presence of 8 aces of spades in a six deck shoe. There are legal implications which are bigger than having a winner at the table (which you need in order to keep the table full and the money flowing from the other five or seven players).
👍 @@briandraper7630 That's an elegant system too - the one you're talking about. However, one of my mates at uni would memorise the cards in other games - for fun. I reckon he'd have been a terror at Blackjack if the odds weren't stacked so heavily against players.
While counting cards is just "skilled play", _communicating_ that count to others is cheating. That's "signalling", and is absolutely illegal. They weren't arrested for counting, but for the signalling. Their lawyers were apparently too lazy to bring that up.
Players are allowed to talk at the table and communicate, some give eachother tips - that's not illegal? Its quite funny becasue the casino only call it foul play when the tips are good. If it a dummy loser dishing them out they're more than happy to let it happen. Perhaps if they want to call it illegal, they should refund every player that ever acted on bad advice given by someone else at the table. Reasonable right?
@@TILT223 General banter, and even "tips" on how to play are legal. But "signalling" is a form of cooperative play, and thus cheating. I can't sit at the table calling out the count, for example. If you sit there constantly telling others how to play, you're going to be removed.
@@jfbeamby that logic, dealers who say the number of the cards the player has so that the player doesn't have to count, would be signaling. The dealer is relaying information to the player that he COULD have if he did the math himself, but doesn't have if he plays mindlessly like the casino wants. That exact description also fits saying the count out loud, which is readily available to anyone who has bothered to pay attention enough to have that information
I'm not sure I want to risk getting beaten up or death to earn a living. Whilst the amount of winnings seems impressive, if it was calculated on an hourly rate, it probably amounts to each person in the team earning the minimum wage. And if winnings are taxable in the US, then it's an extremely boring way to earn a living. There are other forms of gambling that are more lucrative and less time consuming, such as parlaying on fixed odds sports.
@@TILT223 My point is that the edge with card counting is so small, that you could get similar results with disciplined betting on fixed odds sports, particularly with betting agencies offering bonus bets and odds boosts. Not sure about other countries, but in Australia I haven't heard of betting agencies banning customers for taking short odds parlays on sports bets. And winnings aren't taxable.
Honestly, if there's going to be a law on the books defending counters, it should be that any casino that deems someone's play as "too good for them" should be required to give that person unlimited room, food, and beverage comps FOR LIFE. They should effectively be able to live at that establishment and not pay a penny for the rest of their days. Make it prohibitively expensive to bar a counter. Alternatively, a law package that prohibits backoffs, tresspassing, preferential shuffling, restricting the bet limits beyond what is posted at the table, as well as 6:5 blackjack, dealers hitting on soft 17, removing the surrender option, limiting double down and splits at all (including Aces)...force the casinos to deal a fair game to all patrons and accept they're going to lose to counters over the long term. The only protection the casino should have is maximum daily win limits per patron that should be in the mid five figure range.
I never understand why people think that casinos should be forced to allow counters to keep playing. Gambling is a MUTUALLY agreed upon contract. Just as casinos can't FORCE you to keep playing when you don't want to, you can't force them to continue gambling with you.
Literally no other game, sport, or business model penalizes you (or attempts to criminalize you) for simply using your brain and being good at the game they are offering. Can you imagine if Nintendo did that? Or the NBA? Or the SAT/ACT?
American Idol, but you can never have had a singing coach. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? You can't have completed 5th grade. American Ninja Warrior. You can't be athletic. America's Got Talent. You can't have previously trained. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Not if you have a diploma or GED. The Olympics shouldn't be for anyone holding a record or championship.

@@jfbeamcard counting is not illegal , working as a team to count cards is not illegal either

How would you work an edge with that? The sports books ban.
Not true card counters calculate an hourly rate usually in the 200s
Anyone receiving these benefits for life isn't likely to live very long. They will put a hit on you and you'll "swim" in Lake Mead.

If card counting is seen by casinos as "illegal"
Gambling itself should be illegal by the society and law, gambling is stealing

It was 1978, not 1995. 1995 is when the story comes to a head in court, perhaps you missed the 15 years earlier bit at the end of the intro.
Depends. A $100,000 house in 1995 could easily be a $450,000 house today.

Pretty sure working as a team actually isn’t, you’re allowed to talk to the other players at tables, so its not like their doing anything wrong, even it they’re speaking in code
