Simple, straight to the point, and informative. Great video!
Thanks for watching and for the words of encouragement. I appreciate it!
Great video and makes it seem very doable for most homeowners.
Happy to be of service! Thank you for watching!
Thank you Roofer Chick! A single ridge cap shingle blew off my shed. Of all the videos I’ve watched to figure out replacing it, yours is the best 🔨
Aaaaaw! Thanks so much for the feedback and I'm so happy to be of service!
Thank you. We're recovering from hurricane damage. This was extremely helpful.
I'm so glad! It's nice to know this helps people. For the win!
this is the best video I found on ridge top shingle replacement. thanks for taking the time to share!
We found your post while looking for advise on roofing. Wow! We live in Canyon Lake/New Braunfels. We're so proud. You taught the subject well and made it look easy. Congratulations. You could have your own DIY show.
My roof was damaged in Hurricane Ida and I have to do this exact repair. You, Average Roofer, and Practical Roofing Concepts make it look so easy I'm going to try myself instead of waiting months for a contractor
Sorry I'm so slow to respond. Did you try it out? How did it go? You can do this!!!!
I'm curious to hear how it turns out. You can *do* this!!!!!
Nice! Finally someone shows thr rdidge and explains all the details, well done and thanks!
Thanks so much for watching and for your support!
I liked that "y'all" at the end. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for precise instructions...from another Texan
You saved my day and so much time! Just got hit by hurricane irma and need some work done. The contractors are making us wait several months...so its DIY time thanks to you.
Satya M I’m so glad it helped somebody 😍.
Great video, thanks!
Thanks Amy, a large tree recently dropped a huge limb and tore a few shingles off my peak. I never done roof work before and thanks to you and your video I’m all fixed up now.. thank you, your awesome
Nothing makes my day more than hearing that my DIY video helped someone out. Thank you for letting me know and I'm glad it worked!
I praise you for being up there doing your thing. The majority of homeowners should not even attempt to climb on a roof. If not comfortable working on a roof the fall will kill them
Thanks this was very helpful. I was going to buy the special ridge cap shingles, but this video made me realize that using the 3-tabs would be easier and better match the existing caps.
Thanks for watching! Yes, most roofs have a 3 tab shingle for the ridge shingle. It's unfortunate, because the life of the shingle is usually 5-10 years less than the field shingle. When it's time for a new roof, I recommend getting better ridge cap shingles.
Saved me $150 roof repair. Thanks!
Yay! That's my favorite - when someone actually can apply it and save themselves. I'm so happy!
Great tips!!!! And much respects for what you do. Roofing work is not an easy job.
Keep up the good work!!🤙🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for the positive feedback! It is much appreciated!

I take my hat off to you young lady🤙🏼💪🏼
you are so brave!!
Muy buen video.Felicidades
Just replaced a couple of mine. Got architectural at first, but then read that won’t work since it won’t bend properly. I’m pretty happy with the results! Thanks!
I'm proud of you for giving it a try! And you are correct, using laminate shingles would have been a mistake. I probably should have said that.
Hi Ami, I'm Carlos and I don't know if you still are but you used to be a lawn customer of Juan Sosa. Well I was one of the guys mowing your lawn when I was working for him. Anyway, keep up the great work you do.
Thank you! This was exactly what I was looking for!
So happy to be of service!

Hurricane Ian just went through my area and I’m missing about 25 cap shingles. This was the perfect video for me. Thank you!
This makes me exceedingly happy. I’m always just tickled to help someone. I hope you all recover from the storm and i’m thankful that you are safe.
Thanks for the video! I am not a roofer, just a broke homeowner....lol. So, I have learn, thanks a lot to UA-cam, how to fix everything from plumbing issues to replacing a furnace motor myself. Of course, it has come down to now fixing leaks in my roof (which is over 20 yrs. old). I cannot afford to fix it all at once (for now). I was OK with flat runs of the roof, but I was intimidated by doing the ridge. As old as my roof is the ridge looked in good shape. But, wanting to put permanent D-anchors on the ridge for safety harness (permanent because I am eventually replacing the whole roof), I realized I will need to tackle the ridge. As I said, not being an experienced roofer I am making sure I don't get up there without a safety harness. Thanks again.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching

Good to see someone local (well pretty close at least). May be reaching out if I am unable to do this myself.
I'm here for you!
gracias. Big help!
Good luck out there!

How do you keep from tearing the shingles when you put the ladder against them
And obviously you can sit on the ridge shingles as you go
@@johncory3774 If the shingles are still pliable, they will bounce back after you remove the ladder. If they are brittle, they may tear, you are right. If you are concerned about it, you can stick something between your ladder and the shingles (my guys use foam cushions) or use a stabilizer bar on the ladder. Like this: www.amazon.com/Louisville-Ladder-LP-2200-00-Stabilizer/dp/B0000CBILQ/ref=asc_df_B0000CBILQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10441755755399840867&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028022&hvtargid=pla-2281435179818&psc=1&mcid=904a8f9410f03d79ba8258373bcfe4b8&hvocijid=10441755755399840867-B0000CBILQ-&hvexpln=73&gad_source=1
Awesome video, but I NEVER use clear for more then one reason, mostly being in doesn't like to lay down well, Black cement only...
What if you start on an end?
Hardest part is getting on a ladder and walking the roof:).
That's the fun part! Ha! Thanks for watching!
Can you help me out with a question? I had some goofball people put a roof on my house last week and only put half a ridge cap on my house, is it very important to have a ridge cap on your roof?
No they are just for looks
@@51-FS huhhhhhhh haaaaaaaa, Joe you naughty boy!
How do you nail ridge shingles to a ridge with the ridge vents? Is there anything you need to do to get it right?
The ridge cap usually comes with nails that are for it that are longer than roofing nails (like a 8 penny). We use 1.75" ring shank roofing nails on high profile ridge caps and especially when going over the ridge vent to attach the ridge cap. On the rest of the roof we use 1.25". Hope that helps!
@@rooferchicksthanks
Do you just have to trim the ridge shingles?
Joe Mcfarland no ridge cap is sold in bundles just like your field shingles
What you making ice cream cones out of those ridge cap
Hi, thanks for this video. Can you please tell me how long usually the nails should be for this type of ridge repair? Thanks.
Otto Rodriguez regular 1-3/4 roofing nails
Otto Rodriguez sorry for the late response. I usually use 1.25” nails. That’s fine as long as you don’t have an exposed soffit.
I would use the 6 inchers
What is the costbto replace those caps?
3-tab shingles are selling for about $30-35/bundle. Good roofing sealant is $10-15. Is that what you are asking? If I charge for a repair, my minimum is $450.
You over cut your "V" way way to far now the nails on the next pc of cap won't go threw the top of the shingle before it instead of 4 nails it now has 2. Only takes a small "V" cut to not have over exposure
That ladder set up breaks multiple safety guidelines.
OSHA requires a ladder to extend 3 feet beyond the roof. Which I think is crazy because it creates a trip hazard. What do you feel is violated? You can tie off the ladder, but as far as I know, it is not required. I only tie it off on blustery days.
Good information, although it is obvious you almost never swing a hammer.
Gee thanks! That’s the only day I ever have?!?!?
@@amifeller I'm not trying to be negative, your video was good!
No fellers at Feller
We have a couple of guys!
3 Tab roof shingles are the most common?? Really is that truly the case in your area?? Not architectural?
Another Texan here, from Houston. Also roofed in Dallas... 3-tab are still most prominent in these 2 areas so wouldn't be surprised to find that to be true in New Braunfels
0:20 look at that line going sideways)))..
You youtubers make it look so easy , I went up to try and replace one shingle and was very careful I had a new roof put on in 2018 I took my time and very carefully tried to remove the shingles going the three shingle up process every shingle I touched broke . I tried to carefully remove the nails and the shingles just came up and left the nails I ended up with a huge bare spot needing 6 shingles and now I am up into the ridge cap and I stopped . Give me an engine or a boat or a muscle car I am good to go but everything went wrong trying to get this fixed. I have one tab blown up from the wind at the other end right against the ridge cap trying to get a hold of a roof I just cant be my mind wrapped around this 🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥 Why does is look so easy on UA-cam ?
Apparently your NOT afraid of Height. Good Job; btw.
Try putting 4 nails per ridge cap
They will never blow off
Yeah I’m sure that would make the wind resistance amazing!!!
You don't nail shingles on the tar line, need to read instruction .
The nail should be installed below the tar line
You are absolutely right. I made this video almost 10 years ago and I've learned that since then!!!!!
Is this something worthy of filing a claim?
If it’s just a couple of ridge caps, probably not. If it’s a lot, I would.
Good for you but you cut way too much off
0.35,,,,,that is a hip not riadge
We call it "hip" or "hip ridge" here. I googled that, and it appears we are not the only ones to do so. There's even a product called "hip ridge vent." Cruising through videos other people put out to nit pick the errors seems like a strange hobby to me.
Fat! Thank you!
Who says a woman can't do a man's job?
Thats right! I hope more women are brave enough to take on roofing in the future
Hi ami. Hope u doing well. Miss i lots
Ffs if you’re going to provoke people into doing roof repairs themselves at least start with safety
Yeah, I could do better there. Shame on me.
Wrong wrong wrong…. Wrong way to cut ridge cap…. This is why they keep blowing out because you’re only nailing through one Shingle….
Stick to cooking and cleaning
Feeling taller? Why watch a video from a successful female buisiness owner if you think she shouldn’t be out of the kitchen anyway? There must be a better non abusive way to offer feedback. You have to realize how small, insecure, and weak those comments are. I’m actually concerned for women, children, and pets around someone who feels the need to lash out at people. She’s already said her experience has led her to do some things differently now and it’s clear the success her experience has brought her. How much has yours bought you? The video is old enough that if that ridgecap were to come off it would have by now. She’s limited by the reveal of the last installers as well. So be a man and edit the end of this comment and I’ll erase mine. I absolutely hope you have the day you deserve.
Oh sweetie, don’t feel threatened by a successful female roofer. And posting on a video four years old? Bored are you?
@@heatherandrus9568 lol trust me I don’t…. The ridge cap was cut incorrectly plain and simple….
@@MichaelBrown-nr5uc lmmfao…. Don’t get your beaver in an uproar…. If you are going to give an instruction video at least make it correct! Lmmfao I used this video in a training session for young employees… I showed this video and told the GUYS this is why you see ridge cap blow outs..
You can feel sorry all you want…. I’m sure you have a big heart and feel sorry for everyone… lmmfao
