  • The complete concert from 1972 of the Carpenters at Budokan, Japan.
The main highlight is an alternate version of "And When He Smiles" which I've only ever heard in the 1971 BBC concert, and a wacky version of "I Fell In Love" which is different to any other version I've heard them perform.
Where there was no video I've had to use the Carpenters logo screen, and where there is video available, I've tried to sync it as best I can to the audio!

This is when they had 'Only Just Begun'... so young and full of promises. Karen on the drums, her first love, she had mad vocals, Richard on the keys... they both just had Incredible Musical Abilities. They were what you call... Perfection! 💎 Karen looked natural, no make up needed.... she was so Incredibly Beautiful. If only someone could've given her a 'Reason to Believe'... If only they would've left Karen be Karen. That voice, that voice... I miss that Incredible Once in a Lifetime Voice! Thank you for sharing! 💖

Karen's problem wasn't a lack of support. She was mentally ill and wasn't able to cope with the stress of being a celebrity, although I suspect she would have had the same problems without Fame and Fortune.

Seen here singing live from behind her Drum Kit, that VOICE never fails to bring me to 😢tears. No different now that 50 years ago, she hasn't lost her magic touch!😌

The Carpenters were so huge for over a decade. Their records, live concerts, television specials, spots on variety shows, radio ads and interviews have left us an anthology of the music and lives of the 70's, recorded and preserved for posterity. And just when you thought you've seen it all, there's always new material being discovered and shown. This is Karen at her healthiest and just fantastic!

I have never seen this concert, once again she looks so happy on the drums, this is where Karen belonged, singing and drumming. A song I never heard them singing before near the end. I love the way the yellow glimmering colour Carpenters title matches her 'Magnificent Gown' To hear her speak words I have never heard before when she addresses the audience, it seems like she never left🌟

Thank you so much for this excellent, extended version of their concert. It was wonderful to hear alternative, live versions of AND WHEN HE SMILES, I FELL IN LOVE WITH YOU, and the entire 8 song, BACHARACH MEDLEY.

Ahhh, Billy, you are a breath of fresh air indeed. Thank you for sharing this footage, even I - a diehard fan - have never seen this before. I best grab it quick LOL. Thx Billy. Oh, and very smart to change over the video screen to a pretty 'card' when Richard is speaking and throughout. You do what you have to.

I lived in Tachikawa AFB 69-1973. I loved Carpenters and played their album in the restaurant I worked at outside the Main Gate as hostess. But I didn't see them in concert regrettable!! CLOSE TO YOU always takes me back there!!

I have a copy of this concert on blu ray that I imported from japan. It appears that my audio is different tho. The keyboard and flute solos are different. Is this video synced with a radio broadcast that is a different night of the concert? I’m a die hard fan and it is very interesting to me!

Karen Carpenter is one of the wonders that the Almighty decided to gift the Earth with; It's a shame that not even He could stand being away from her for a long time and, very quickly, he ended up taking her back to himself...
