- Seeking to allay India’s apprehensions ahead of his first scheduled trip abroad as Sri Lankan President-to New Delhi this week-Gotabaya Rajapaksa has a reassurance to offer. We will work with India as a friendly country and won’t do anything that will harm India’s interests, he told Nitin A. Gokhale, Editor-in-Chief of BharatShakti.in and SNI, in his first interview after taking over the top political job in the island nation. He favours Sri Lanka to be neutral as “we don’t want to get in between the power struggles of superpowers. But we want to work with all countries”. Asserting that Sri Lanka’s involvement with China during the presidency of his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa (who was President till 2015) was “purely commercial”, Gotabaya feels giving away the Hambantota port to China on a 99-year lease was a mistake by the previous government (when Maithripala Sirisena was President and Ranil Wickremesinghe was Prime Minister). The deal has to be renegotiated, he says. And what does the ex-serviceman have to say about allegations of him being ‘authoritarian’ and ‘racist’? It’s a wrong perception, he counters, created during the conflict period (the Eelam war IV). “I am a disciplined person but that doesn’t mean I am racist”.

People here who think the interviewer is interrupting are stupid. He is just giving words to the president's thoughts. He is not insulting him but helping him to put across his views. English is not our first language, we cannot expect all to be eloquent.
The dynamics of South Asian subcontinent has changed rapidly. The Pakistan's flawed geo political strategy has been exposed. While India is rapidly growing Pakistan is struggling to survive, the gap between the capabilities b/w India and Pakistan is ever increasing whether it is about military, economy or diplomacy.
Sri Lanka and India are much more culturally integrated than Sri Lanka and Pakistan or Sri Lanka and China. Whether it religion, food, culture we all know India and Sri Lanka have much more in common. Also everybody knows about Pakistan's affairs with Islamic terror policy and policy of suppressing religious freedom.
India and Sri Lanka can be more closely aligned then they're right now. India already helps in training Sri Lankan public and military officials. And Sri Lanka and India are bound to have some tiffs owing to the geographical proximity but nothing that can be resolved by better communication and diplomacy. A win win for both the countries.
Nah bruh Sri Lanka is much closer to Pakistan just like Pakistan butchered it's minorities (Hindus Pashtuns Baloch etc) Sri lanka has butchered it's one and only true minority aka the Tamils.

The previous UPA headed govt, which had DMK as it's alliance partner, betrayed Mahinda Rajapakse govt by rejecting the Hambantota project after initially agreeing. Rajapakse then approached China to sting it to the then Indian govt.
Hambantota port was given to China by Ranil-Sirisena coalition who defeated Mahinda Rajapakshe.Ranil-Sirisena coalition used India to defeat Mahinda by telling lies about his relationship with China.Then they betrayed India and gave Hambantota port to China and lied about debt trap(true but used for an excuse to steal money.This govt even steal central bank in the country which never happened before).These are the reasons why Ranil-Sirisena coalition do that ;
1-To get money (government rule only 5 years but they sold part of country for 99 years. )
2-To undermine Mahinda government( Mahinda built it .It named by his name.)
3-It was located in Mahinda birth district where they vote for him hugely.(Trust me.He don't want to sell his largest voting bloc.)

@@MultiSuneth You have a valid point from Srilankan point of view, however, our concern with Srilanka is of strategic nature not economic or other issues, there is a big difference in China and India, we are a democracy, its not easy to have a single view and in democracy, the opinion are varied. Indian objection is limited to use of military space of Srilanka by China, as long as its adhered I don't think India will have any issues, Srilanka is well within its rights to choose friends and foes and see what's good for its people. The world has seen influx of money without building the capacity to absorb or pay back has its ills, borrowing money for infrastructure on commercial rates has led down many countries ...including India, therefore, calibrated approach will do good. I am sure India will not be a fool to build another Humban tota just to counter China, it will spend money in neighbor hood carefully looking at the actual needs. It was UNP government or the previous government that sold it to China for 99 years. Mahinda Rajapaksha clearly said he never planned to do it, he and his team had plan to deal with it but it's the foreign meddling that led to China getting the port .
@Arid That because there is no chinese debt trap as western media pointed, basically it was more like a previous govnt 2015 election campaign slogan, Chinese foreign debt as a percentage of SL total, is less than 8%
Hambantota port is a mega port suited for large cargo, military and passenger ships and vessels. To my understanding, this port was a part of a much larger plan that included a new tourist - commercial - industrial hub complete with a highway that connected Colombo (almost complete despite delays) and the Mattala International Airport - the recently defeated government decided to close in 2015 and store excess paddy in.
A port of this magnitude takes years to become profitable, but records show that it made a small $1.81MN operating profit in 2015, the very year the Rajapaksas got defeated. If the previous government allowed that larger plan to continue unscathed, we would not even be discussing this very topic.

Moreover, about hambantota and such similar Srilankan collaborations with China we should also acknowledge that SriLanka has also approached to India for such partnerships. It was only due to our mute response, they approached China. We also own this undoing as much as SriLanka does. Gotya is smart there was no option with the previous govt other than lease out the port to the Chinese. Gotya and Mahinda are the kinda guys who will take out a loan of 10 billion for a kickback and leave the details and pain of payment to successor govts.

why does the interview keep interrupting when the Srilankan president is answering? it's irritating, doesn't have he have the patience to listen to the answers before interrupting with affirmations. I don't know why the interviewer has the need to answer part of the answer, completing his sentences and justifying his answers afterward?
This wasn't a formal interview. They both are actually close friends, even before Gotabaya became the president. He is filling in where Gota struggles, to ensure the flow of conversation is uninterrupted. Both Rajapakshe and Gota have the same issue of pausing in interviews searching for a correct term to say and usually most interviewers gently nudge them in the right direction.
Wil all due respect to Gotabaya, if Nithin did not keep helping him, this interview would have lasted more than a hour with us falling asleep in the first 10 mins.

India may beat Sri Lanka in the field of science and math, but Sri Lanka leads the entire South Asian region in human rights, development & environmental protection.
