- China looks down on India, while India doesn't think big of China. This line sums up the problematic discourse between Delhi and Beijing, argues Prof B R Deepak of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. In this chat with SNI on the occasion of China marking 70 years of the founding of the communist republic, Deepak believes no major transformation in the relationship is likely in the near future. He also faults India for not doing enough to study and understand China and contrasts this with the time and effort put in by Chinese universities to research on India.

Present understanding of India about China is what Western scholars viewed & understand from Western perspective. India shall form specific dedicated China centre as West has. Everything about China should be studied on it. Economic, Political, cultural, technology , Education etc. India should have its own Independent policy towards China keeping in mind its own interest. We will make gross mistake to understand China from Western perspective. Whether you like it or not China will stay as Superpower for next 100 year & we have to live with it.

China does not have same advantages like oil and military..they have the highest debt of 300%.. instead of just looking at superficial things..

@E Rampersad the point is when cost of living increases, along with lack of young population to make use of it...adding to it the movement of manufacturing overseas..defaults of loans by countries part of one road one belt initiative..China has no where to get the money from..internal debt will cause destruction of local economies as the government debt is an npa....
Previously it did not have any trade wars too..the incoming foreign investment and income helped them cover it..

When ever a communities cost of living raises the cost of production raises..when they outsource manufacturing they loose control over the process like what happened to America and Europe before that....

The US has everything it needs to retain its status as one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world. The fact that it is looking to enter serioius decline is mostly due to self-inflicted wounds, such as:
- lack of investment in domestic infrastructure
- lack of strategic investment in R&D for the tech fields likely to rule the future
- wasteful spending on foreign military adventures and occupations
- a democratic system that does not allow for forward planning and continuity (a failing that India shares).
- the prioritizing of financial hegemony (global reserve status for the US dollar) for geopolitical reasons, at the expense of the domestic economy.
- an irresponsible corporate media that damages the social fabric in pursuit of clicks and profit.
Honestly, given the US' demographics and technological lead, it is baffling that the US is not currently leading the 4th industrial revolution and ;ea ving China to another century of playing catch-up. The fact that China is expected by some to steal the lead in high-tech industries within the next 10 to 15 years is a testament to the absolute state of poor governance of the US.
India's understanding of China is through the Anglo Saxon perspective. How will you get to the real truth about China?
That's because India also sees itself through that paradigm. Indian politicians are all over the place, they can't patch things up anywhere, at home or in the international stage.
I think once the internal situation is actually structured properly, the rest will just go much easier.

America didn't colonise any part of China. They were even allies at the time.
Also British colonisation actually developed Hong Kong and even gave democracy and freedom. Colonisation actually did good things like in countries like Bahrain and Singapore.

China do want to improve their relationship with India simply see they try to donate the Oxygen flask and the machines but in return India government did not say thanks and keep quite after receiving everything.
At current time China is the only country that can help India industrialize. But instead of corporation, India picked the confrontation route in dealing with China. China stated publicly many many times that they don't want to be a strategic competitor against the US. In contrast, India take offense if China doesn't think India is a strategic competitor. Yes. We don't look down on India because we are ahead of India. We look down on India because despite being behind China in almost all areas, India still talks big without effective actions to change the situation. Indian people I met are blindly positive and always find excuses for themselves. Most highly educated Indians I met overseas have no intention to return to India.

Respect is earned, not talked into. China does not respect India because they perceive Indians are just empty talkers. Other than that, China does not care too much about India. We definitely need a rethink on China. US has been inconsistent. Europe has vacillated between indifference and welcoming. Like it or not, China is a superpower... an emerging one at least. It is a leader in many technologies (e.g telecom). We do need a reset.
India needs to look at China objectively, and learn to appreciate and acquire lessons from China's growth in a realistic way.
Instead of viewing China from our medieval lens, we shoild learn from China's growth without bias.
Why the Indians generally are unable to see objectively of China is because of low education level. Because of this reason, India remained backward even after all these years.

Absolutely great observation. The West continue to dope India to continue to live off its "democracy" and there is not much its politicians can do to change it. China and India are very old civilization and we should live peacefully as we live for the thousands years
I think it is so pity for India to lag behind. Indian has much more arable land than China. Indian people are very smart and speak English well. It is closer to Mid East where oil were produced. It has closer relationship with the west and can buy high tech products from them, while China has to make them by itself. The main difference is that for Chinese government, the made a plan every 5 years for the next 5 years, sticks to the plan and works on details within those five years. Indian, on the other hand, doesn't have a powerful government. Once the administration changes, a lot of plans get overturned.
Plus, China might invest in India in its infrastructure (it is very important), but it doesn't want Indian to industrialize too fast. China did so with the idea of selling overproduced materials. The west wants to sell products to India but won't and don't have incentives to make it transform to be a high tech driven economy. The lesson that India can learn from China is unifying the whole nation and work with one heart, do not try to rely on any other nations, neither China, nor the US.

The truth is not just China look down on India. It's undeniabe that many other nations also look down on India. Just look at what was achieved since the last 70 years of both nations and you will come to only one conclusion. No use to talk about past dynasties, past grand era or history in this aspect. It's not important how others see you; what you have achieved, what you are capable of as a nation, how is the standing of your citizens. These are what that really matter most. These the basic that other judge you, these are why others see you as a "disappointment", India! The FIRST STEP towards correction is to total abolishment of your centuries old caste system and mould your citizen to become truly one people of a nation. Only when this is done then you can take on other improvement.

I dont think the Chinese people look down on India. In ancient Chinese Text, 天竺国 is a civilisation which China is aware and has accorded friendship and trades with.
China's rise is seen as a threat to US + some other countries. In reality, China never want to be a threat but a peaceful and constructive country towards building an inclusive common mankind destiny. This has been stressed repeatedly in Chinese
When you want to progress , you compete with the best. China naturally has its sight on the US. India is not in the same league.

I’m from China. I was surprised to hear the Indian perception that Chinese looks down on Indian. Every Chinese knows a novel “Journey to the West”, in which India is called “the West Haven”. I think historically Chinese respects India.

The story "Journey to the west" shows the monk and his entourage reaching India in final parts. More over we have historical account of chinese scholar Xunzang (602 AD -664 AD) who travelled all the way from east to Nalanda university in India. This accord also proves that Tibet was never a part of China till 1950s.

@@factspoken9062 China first unified to be the state we know now under the Qin, but the borders changed as China was conquered, split, reunified, etc. like a dozen times (and there used to be major states dominating the same region since well before that), though there was at least more continuity with China's dynasties than India's dominant empires - In China, each dynasty claims to be the successor state of the previous one, not so much for India.
The Qing conquered the Ming, expanded to massive borders, and established sovereignty over Tibet - which happened in the 1600s - 1700s ("priest and patron" in 1653, full on subordinate protectorate in 1720 after the Dzungar Khanate invasions), and didn't lose de jure control until it fell apart (In the 1907 Anglo-Russian convention, Qing suzerainty over Tibet was reaffirmed and affixed to an international document). It wasn't part of "China proper", you could say, but the integration that happened afterwards wasn't quite just marching in on a sovereign nation: Communist China saw itself as (and was later recognized as despite the so-called illegal occupation) the successor to the Qing, which meant de jure claims on overlordship over Tibet, and forcibly integrating vassals was far from unheard of. Meanwhile, India as we know it nowadays didn't exist until less than a century ago - It wasn't the successor to the Muhgals or anything, it was its own state. That state was established by British border drawing, and India is rightly regarded as a post-colonial state that didn't exist until said colonization. The Brits are about as far back as shared history between the peoples of India go.
India plus China can bring peaceful and prosperity to all over asia and the world.
Just one comment: India culture doesn’t seem to value hard skills, from my personal experience, many Indians want to live off soft leadership skills as soon as the opportunity presents; on contrast, Chinese people value a lot about hard skills. Does it make a difference in terms of building stronger nations by infrastructure and technology, after all, those things need hard efforts and heavy labors.

China when they opened up their economy with an understanding with US in mid seventies destabilized Janata Party government in 1977 through left parties otherwise Morajeebhai Desai would have opened up our economy in 80’s but the Socialist and Communist put a brake on this. That 30 years gap of development eluded India and India will catch up with China soon if Indian youth understand this and vote wisely for the next 20 years India will come closer in all Parameters

No, China did not view India as a competitor, instead, China always treats its neighbors as brothers and sisters. Whenever India did anger China, China just tells India to go back as what a big brother telling the smaller brother. Only that India will not listen, as India always presume, I should be the bigger brother. But those surrounding countries that share borders with China can accept that is why there is not territory conflict with the rest of its neighbors.

I'm saying this bcz in India whole world is watched with the prism of british or western world understanding not in our way by the so called scholars of the modern Indian history and theirs followers. The inferiority complex is so deep rooted in our society regardless of whether the person or society belongs to from north or south or east or west of India. They try to speak, eat, behave, dress like britishers or americans or u may say whole as westerns ideology. If we have to understand chinese ideology, culture , society and their views regarding the world we always look at americans or western scholars views, in the same way if we have to understand the behavior of americans or western world we always watch them with russian perspective and vice-versa. In last 70yrs we haven't established till date either at govt. level or university level think tank or researchers like usa and china to do research on regarding their characteristics and behavior regarding power politics which can help us during conflict situations against the adversaries. Due to this apologist behavior by the govt as well as by people, we can't downplay the western world narrative against us on kashmir or poverty or on our scientific development when they mock us. Each nation has some weak point, u have to know the art of utilising it when and how. If u feel sorry for the glory of your culture and civilisation from top to bottom level or from govt. to people level then how u make others to think to respect u as a nation of pride and glory.
Regarding the chinese scholars, who lived in the awe of this civilisation since centuries had to change their view at a sudden when they visited India during freedom struggle, it was because we were not fighting for freedom , we were demanding the freedom from one who have having modern weapons in their hands. We were seen to others as very poor people who don't have the might to stand tall against the invaders. Here people were busy in singing poem in the praise of the oppressors.

India was the first country of British empire to be independent after independence of USA. We did fight and win the independence don't belittle great achievements. Here very few people are worried for the nation which lead to corruption from top to bottom level, whether a person is highly educated or uneducated. They do it in its manner and justify their wrong doings by various means. So people are mentally corrupted. If it isn't so then people respect their public property and care it as its own property.

For one thing, Indian movies are quite popular in China. But I feel sometimes Indian netizens are aggressive towards Chinese because we had a land dispute, Indians felt bullied. Prior to that, there's no interaction between India and China, much less looking down or up each other. Fast forward to now, most Chinese still don't know about India, or even 1962 war. In fact, it is us who are more informed abt China. Negatively is also mostly from our side, largely driven by our media.

As someone who has been to both countries, I think India and China are both far too different to draw anything useful from each other.
In terms of practical economic and political policy, India has nothing to learn from China. China is it's own unique culture and history. China's economic, political, and cultural policies was design to best fit the Chinese situation and narrative. India is under extremely different circumstances and cannot copy or even learn lessons from China's growth. If India has anything to learn from China, it's that countries need to develop based on their own culture and situation and stop blindly following Western norms and expectations.
That is something that Indians will never do, because even though Indians took back their lands and territory from their former Anglo Saxon colonizers, the Indian people never truly won the fight to take back their sense of intellectual and cultural independence. India is still intellectually and psychologically colonized/dominated by the Western powers.
China suffered greatly from Western militarism and colonialism just as India, but the difference is the Chinese learned to look at White people with suspicion and distrust. Indians on the other hand still look for affirmation and validation from the Western world. Many Chinese are confused about India's attitude towards the West, because they feel India is such a great country with a long and glorious history, why would they ever want to look for acceptance and validation from Westerners? From what I've seen, if there is one reason Chinese people disrespect Indians, it's because many Chinese people feel Indians have no sense of pride and independence from the West. I don't think Chinese people are alone in this attitude towards India. I think many non-Western peoples and nations around the world are thinking the same thing.
