Just gotta say again, best video EVER on how to tie a knot.....any knot!
Thanks for great video, thanks for not blabbing for 5 minutes telling us how great you are.
BEST FG video I have found! Good job.
Really appreciate your videos. In my opinion, you are the authority for reel teardowns and reviews. I won't buy a spinning reel anymore until you've weighed in. I can already tie the FG but I enjoyed these anyway. Thanks for your time and effort!
An A+ video.. You have the best demonstration of the FG KNOT .. You are very articulate and being a retired pro photographer you have allowed us to get up close and personal to appreciate the finished knot.. It’s the knot to have on your line if you expect to catch that 50 lb COW in the Cape Cod Canal..Thank you 👍🏿
Outstanding explanation with great closeups to show how to tie this knot. This helped me a great deal! Thanks!
Great tutorial! I will by applying this to all my set ups! Thank you for the quality!
This is the best video I’ve seen before, very one says to do a half hitch but people that don’t know how to tie, but you show how every knot and twist should be done.Great videos mate
Beautiful, this is the 4 turn finish knot I like to use on the end of the Alberto (Improved) knot. Thank you again for your time and expertise.
As always, very good step by step. I have always used the improved Alberto but this tutorial made tying the fg, a cinch!
Great job explaining the FG knot!👍
Excellent presentation and production values with no mindless chatter.
Amazing job on this video since there are so many various videos that offer various twists on the FG. This looks a lot easier than even using the tool that I have been using. Great camera work also, super grateful to you for the guide. Liked and subbed.
Thank You ! I have tried other methods and did not have much success. I have been able to successfully use this method consistently while sitting in my recliner watching hockey. It extremely satisfying to see the braid turn colors when tightening the knot. I think the tip of prepping the braid with your finger nail really helped, plus having a longer tag end and using gloves to tighten instead of dowels. I agree with other comments that the leader must be 20# and up, otherwise just use the Modified Alberto (which is another great knot tutorial of yours).
I realize this is an old video but the your explanation and camera work was the absolute best I have seen and I have watched A TON of videos on how to tie the FG.
Outstanding tutorial! Thank you very much.
Thanks for helping me conquer the FG not. It took a few tries. I like your slack line method, I think it will work better on the river.
Best easy video and without the risk of breaking your teeth greetings from greece!!!!
great example/vid of this, one of those "I just tied it perfect the first time and should have just left it...." damn it" lol Great knot, thank you for this, I was having trouble following others for some reason.........the tension when I'm using 8/10lb braid to 20lb fluoro is essential with this. I have arthritis pretty bad (40 years old sucks lol) so the tension especially with the smaller braids is needed to keep it holding well but your instructions are excellent, cheers again :)
That knot is worth the fish of a Lifetime.
wow thanks! this super in detail video of wrapping this knot is really gonna help when I go to try tying it hopefully tomorrow! Thanks!
It really is an effective way to tie the fg knot consistently. And that's the most important part of any knot.
I honestly can’t thank you enough! Stellar tutorial... the fg knot is my favorite connection knot, it’s failed me a few times but I think it’s because I wasn’t properly locking it correctly. Please keep your knot tutorials coming. 🙌🏽🎣💪🏽💯
I found those half hitches failing me causing knot to unravel
thanks a lot this informative and very easy video on how to make an FG knot
Thanks for video. When I messed up my first two I called in the 13 year old daughter to tell me what I'm doing wrong. She figured it out and I now have a great knot. Thanks!
LOL....amazing aren't they!!!! I'm glad you found it useful!!
this video and method is life changing LOL. thank you Tackle Advisors haha...
Awesome demonstration and video quality👏👏👏
Excellent video, thank you!
yo Bro! Great stuff! I'm using this knot for a while now and your video is the clearest to follow!
Thanks man!!! Appreciate it
easily my favorite knot since i learned it! gj. i will be referring ppl to this vid
Thanks! I'm going to reshoot it. My camera was on it's way out while filming it. Gonna condense it and make it look clearer! Before I do that though. I'm going to do a few more tutorials including demystifying the PR knot. Which is the strongest of them all!!!
Thank you. Learned in 3 trys
I can't believe how easy you made this.
Great tutorial!
Nice job! Great video.
In fairness man thats some knot. Ill be giving that a shot.
Easiest FG knot video to follow. I am a Tackle Advisors junkie!
Best video ever! thank you! this helped me so much!
May i ask do you always need the Risoto finish at the end?
I learned from wrapping vaping coils and doing braid coils uniformity with anything braid is doing everything in rapid succession. The faster you go and the more comfortable you get is when it'll really start to shine.
EXCELLENT!!! Thank you!
I used to finish the FG exactly as you do it but found it would get hung up on the tip guide often when reeling in with tension. What I found works better is: 2 or 3 half hitches over the leader, then doing the rizzuto finish over the leader. I then cut and burn the tag ends of the braid and the leader. I find this is much more trouble free. Try it yourself and compare.
I’ve been using the Albright knot, then the Alberto knot for tying my leaders to braid. I use 15lb braid to 8-10 pound floro, or mono. I’m up in years and my vision and agility isn’t the same, but I wonder if this should tie the same with lighter lines🤷🏻♂️ I’ve watched all 3 episodes of theFG knot, and always appreciate how thorough you are with all of your video work. Thanks 🙏 Will
Up close knot great
Cheers Mate!
The heavier the leader the easier this method is, but with practice your will be able to efficiently tie the FG with ease. I can tie this knot every way but the hardest way and most inefficient I find is the triangle loop. Whichever method you choose practice this everyday until you get it down. That way there's less that will go wrong and less to blame on the knot itself.
How long a leader do you use and how often should I change? I'm a newbie. I almost gave up on this knot but kept practicing. Now I can do it with gloves on thanks to you.
5 stars 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you.!..Tired of losing lures due to FG failures...
Great video! Love this knot but its a bear with 10-15lb braid and a 6-8lb floro leader.
I know what you mean. When the line is so limp and fine, it is much harder to tie. Everybody shows it being tied with 50 lb test. I want to see them tie it with 8 lb test!
can i use FG knot for fly fishing?
real question
When I was thinking about the swivel failing I thought that it would just stop spinning freely. But if failure means they can actually break then it's not worth the risk. Each strike is too valuable. In Hawaii it is said that a Ulua (GT) is a fish of a thousand casts. It's probably close to that fishing from shore on this island where everyone eats fish. We do practice "catch and release" but I don't think its as wide spread as on the mainland. It's nuts on the mainland people treat Jacks like trash fish. Here they are gladly eaten by the majority of fish eaters. A Jack Crevalle must be very different from our Jack Trevelly. Thanks for your responses.
keep pumping outvideos
I'm struggling here. Doing the wraps isn't a problem. When I get to the half hitches, they don't really want to stay tight after the rest of the knot is cinched down. Any suggestions?
I usually use 30lb braid and a 10lb fluorocarbon leader. It's a little easier with 30lb mono.
I currently use Spro #2 BB swivels. I throw plugs from shore for smaller Ulua (GTs) 10- 20 # on Oahu Hawaii. I don't actually lose enough of them to have a cost hardship. I just like being cost efficient. Aka cheap. The brands I am considering are Jshanmei, Shaddock, and Am Fishing Wire. The first two say they have copper bodies. AFW says they use brass. As a alternative what's the cheapest quality brand that you'd recommend? Thanks for the fast response. I love your lure dissecting and spinning reel review vids. This idea started when I watched your reel clone vids and you found they weren't all crap.
I gotcha....I think the biggest issue is quality control. So are you connecting the lure to the swivel with a split ring? or attaching a leader to your mainline with it? And? are you hanging an assist hook off the ring?
If it were me. I'd consider going to a cheaper type of swivel, barrel vs ball bearing before I went with a no noame braid. YOu can tell if a reel is crappy...You can't tell a swivel is bad until it fails on a fish. Tsunami had issues with their swivels failing a few years ago. Hence why I only use spro.
I tried tying this knot 5 X. And I was not able to clench it down at the end. The leader just slips out. The first time I tried to tie the FG knot was with saltwater experience. And I got it the first time. This way seems the easiest but I can't get it right don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Is part 2 just a continuation of the first video of you running your thumb nail and finger down the line?
Really nice job, now my turn.
Thanks! How'd you make out?
Great video you explain it clearly but you should have tied it fast as well so the wraps were all tight and it finished clean when you tightened it up like the one you had next to the one you tied
The FG knot is like harvesting a bluefish. So many steps. You must A.) bleed the fish immediately. B.) get the fish on ice ASAP. C.) gut it and cut the head and fins off. D.) decide whether to scale it or not. E.) fillet it. G.) cut the skin off.
There is a reason why the FG knot is tight by keeping tension on the braid or on the mono and that is because the wraps have to criss cross each other at about a 45 deg angle which makes sure that the braid really bites on the mono. From what I see in this video the wraps are kinda parallel which is no good in my experience.
Unrelated, but what is your opinion of the cheap ball bearing swivels with solid rings you can find on Amazon? Some are like half the price of the name brand ones and outwardly they look the same.
I bought a bunch of the cabelas brand ones instead of the sampo
#5's
3 of them had welds that weren't complete. and a bunch more had welds that were giant blobs.
They also rust...where as the sampos just turn copper (black fisnish comes off) and then turn green after awhile but still function.
what are you using them for. I use them for trolling and jigging / popping tuna since i can hang assist hooks off the rings.
Alot of times spro barrel swivels will work as good as ball bearing swivels
A three part series to tie a knot??! Lotsa luck!
What kind of knot do you tie
it''s worth it
Whats the best mono as a leader to go with 40 lbs braid?
Risutto finish is worth doing
With a FG knot how long can the leader be? Will it work with a 15 foot leader, for example. Meaning, will this knot mess up the line back on the reel?
I"ve never had an issue. But like with all braid to leader knots. If you keep the knot on the spool. There is the chance of a blow by tangle with spinnning gear..
Have watched an awful lot of your videos reels etc. All great. Have been using the FG knot for many years & have bought two devices to help me tie it. After watching your video I can now tie without them. However using ultra-thin IZANUS braids of 30lb rating my knots are failing at around 9-10kg. This is measured on a digital scale using a knot puller for the braid reading taken immediately before failure. The FG works fine on thicker braids I can tie a 20lb braid to a 30lb leader & record a break of around 11kg. Common sense dictates the 30lb braid should break higher even though the diameter is far less than the 20. I can assume the thinner braid is cutting through some way or other. Have not mentioned braid names as I don't know if this is appropriate here. Any help would be appreciated.
👌🏻
Yes it’s a great knot but a pain in the arse doing it on a boat on a windy day I’ll stick to my uni knot much easier and pulling the knot through the guides is not an issue for me.
Do you get more than one season of use out of a bail of braided line?
depends on the the line and reels. I got 2 out of fins 40g on a stella. But saw first hand how with the same line one trip and it was a kinked up de sheathed mess also on a stella. I can get a season out of braid on my fw baitcasters. One of my favorites for spinnerbaits got better the second season using suffix performance braid (which nobody even pays attention too lol) For the surf I don't get as much life out of line. On tuna trolling reels using hollow core. 5 to 10 years is possilble without issue. Every now and then do a simple knot strength test. And trim back any fraying
Seriously, I can’t tie the knot this way with anything less than 20# mono or fluoro (practicing using 30# braid). I seem to need some stiffness to get the braid to wrap snugly. Any thoughts? (I mean other than that I’m inept and uncoordinated...)
Lol you're not inept or uncoordinated. When tyin under 20lb leader it's tough. This method is better tied with 20 and up
I tie this way regularly with 50lb/16lb as well as 20lb/8lb. Its a bit tricky but it can be done. When pulling the wraps snug you just have to pull at a pretty sharp angle to the left (towards the main flouro line) and pinch.
the videos all use heavier lines than i have ever owned make a video using 10 lb Power Pro super slick braid and 6lb Seaguar abrazex
I can tie it fast with it in my teeth .... I tried this way but with 20-30lb mono its too soft... Do you have any tips for smaller line sizes? with 80# and above I can tie it no problem like this...
For anything under 20lb I generally use a daichi knot assist 2.0 or tie a pr knot. 20lb and up i usually use 5-30lb braid so it's not difficult. If you get it down pat using heavier line. You generally don't really have to look at it as you wrap. And with 20lb you can pinch it deeper and it stacks better. Just gotta have faith in your wraps.
Thank you for the quick reply.. I will try and find one of the daichi knot assist tools for the lighter leaders.. What 5lb braid do you use? What is the dia. ?
I love knots :)
Would a drop of crazy glue be good on the last half hitch or not necessary?
Glue usually isn't needed
Be careful adding a hard glue. Hard edges and start to fray filaments in the braid.
Purty!!!
I made Rizzuto last night for dinner
I watched Phil on yankees classics :)
I’m having an issue where after I do the hitches that the knot pulls through when I go to tighten, any ideas on why? I’m stumped
Hi Dylan. What do you mean by pulls through?
The first and last wraps stay but the others hop up on top of the line and bunch up. I’m doing something wrong just not sure what
hmmmm...can you send a pic to my FBook or instagram
Yeah I’ll send one in a sec
Messaged you on IG but I rewatched the video and figured it out. I was doing the tag end wraps over the mono instead of under
they are. dry informational forms and other viewers
Will this method work even if you have teeth?
Possibly
...I want all the time and line back I wasted with all the other videos!!
Valid for Gt?
Pr and FG are two top knots. As always test test test and practice before using
I'm confused?? Looks like 3 lines... dark colored braid, blue/green leader and a white line wrapped/knotted. Runs counter to all other FG knot videos I've seen.
The dark color braid and the white braid is the same line, color to show the wraps. If the braid was the same color it wouldn't show how the wraps are alternated white then dark then white and so on. Look at the video again.
ON BLUE GROUND WHITE LINE OK BUT THE OTHER LINE CANT SEE PROPERLY. EVERY BODY DONT HAVE GOOD EYESITE
Let me see you tie it with some 8lb test mono and braid.
will it work on light test like 6lb
Absolutely but with limp leaders it's a little tricky
Actually it was 26 times
This fucking knot is hard as fuck to tie
HAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Sure is. And this method is the easiest. Unfortunately it's only really easy on heavier line. The benefit is. Say you use 20lb. It's actual breaking strength un knotted is rougly 40lbs (some brands are higher some lower). Use this knot and you can get 80%-90% of that unknotted strength. The PR knot can get close to 99%. Learn this knot or the PR...and downsize your braid double your distance on spinners :)
Thanks I just learned it and the improved Albright knot. I feel like both of those are strong. I’d rather just keep all braid or all fluorocarbon. Much easier. Lol
Zero bucks to the first person to tell me what FG stands for! I read somewhere else it stands for Fine Grip, really?
I honestly think that's what it stands for.. PR is page ranking....alberto is because of the Asian Elvis.....But yeah..FG is kinda odd.
I like to think it stands for "fucking great" knot.
I would not cut the tag end that close.
"Do it 5 or six times...that's good!"
...did almost 20 times himself -.-...
I'm sorry, but I don't see any reason for this knot over an Alberto knot... why would one need a knot small enough to pass through the eyelets? Why would you reel this up farther? That just doesn't make sense to me... unless you are trying to fly fish or something. I just make my leader somewhere between 6-12", tie in on with an Alberto, and then just let it hang down further if I think I need more distance for the lure I''m throwing. Cause this is just awful for people who like to finesse fish. I could possibly see the use with heavier braid and mono leaders, but I run 20-50lb stealth-style braid with 6-15 lb copolymer or fluorocarbon leader. Good luck getting the wraps tight on that! I can't even do it with a 20 lb mono leader, when I try to do the wraps, the braid wants to slide forward and fold the mono.
I mostly fresh water fish. I did learn to do it, but I used my own method. And have since forgotten how I did it. Lol.
Try making it that pretty with 80lb braid with 180lb mono leader. They don’t look that pretty
Hmmmm I don't think I've gone that high in solid braid. I have 300 lb spectra.. And there's no way an fg would work with that or a pr knot. I'm thinkin pr knot and bow string serve tool... Whenever I'm that high in spectra it's hollow core. I've used up to 600lb making wind on deep drop sword fish rigs.. Even made a few silly wind ons for sharking..
If your leader is thin this technique does not work, don’t bother
What thumbnail? Lol
