    Great and smart practical way of tying the FG knot.
    It is way more sufficient because you have to be able to make it , in the boat with wind and waves .. from shore standing on rocks you name it.
    The half hitch finnish is also very important, the two different halfhitches on top of each other will dig into each other.
    And the 'half hitch' with the tag end gone through it 4 times, is just as strong as the Rizzuto finnish, but much easier to tie!
    Great stuff & very good footage!

    Great,I can keep my dentist bill to a minimum now. Good clear and concise instruction. I will definitely be using this method of tying the FG knot. I do prefer ending with the whipping knot (or Ruzzoto as you call it) as it leaves the tag end protected and gives the knot end a point which I believe goes through the guides easier on retrieve. Many thanks for the videos. 👍

    Really neat trick pulling the wraps back and catching them with your fingers. Trying to tie that knot on the boat with the wind blowing the braid around is tough. Your method takes care of that problem.

      I cut off a long hollow core splice of 120 fluoro and dropped down to 60lb...FG'ed on the bow in about 3 mins....no hook ups on topwater throwing surface irons...But At least I could reach em and have a secure connection.....
      Beauty is...With the PR and FG...you should be able to get 80% of ABS...essentially allowing you to step down in braid compared to alberto and uni knots.

    I watched a few FG knot videos just last week and I must say your’s is the most thorough, and especially after watching all 3 . I just bought new 15lb braid high viz yellow for my spinning reels and I wonder if there’s any difference with lighter lines... my first practice will be using 10lb floro

    I like your approach towards the FG knot its simple and affect.. my approach is a little different i leave my main line in the rod tie a surgeon's loop and hook it to the handle of the reel to apply the tension then pass the leader over the mainline in the usual fashion down under up under repeating 30 times for light gear and 45 for heavy i then do one half hitch clip the leader 2mm from the wraps and carefully melt the leader into a small ball then i tie 6 to 8 half hitches going back down the knot finishing by melting the braid tag its the strongest way i have found to tie the FG. I've caught some big sharks and sea bass with this method... tight lines guys

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +1

      I had a stint of caterpillars this spring.....Thankfully only when bluefish were around...and I wasn't throwing pricey firewood (custom plugs) In a 24 hour period I couldn't cinch an fg or alberto for the life of me....turned out my 100 yard leader spool was at about 20 feet left....and it had been soaked and dried 50x over.....A few creative swear words and a New leader spool 80lb suffix superior and never had a problem.. Not sure if it was just the old leader or what....Not sure it that helps or not :)
      But make sure when oyu tie the FG....you realllllllly wrench that knot down....As it's the most imprtant part!

    I like your method and will incorporate most of it into my own FG knot tying. One thing I noticed while watching your 3 videos is that sometimes you made the last wrap with the tag end and sometimes with the standing end. I wonder if there is any difference in doing one or the other. It seemed like making the last wrap with the standing end may have been by accident the couple times you did it.

  • @mjp5546
    @mjp5546 5 років тому +3

    Awesome, thank you. The only instance where I cant get this to work without my teeth is for very light leader (12lb fluro) to 6lb braid). I find the leader isn't stiff enough to support the loops without pulling it.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 років тому +2

      yup....I draw the line at around 20.....at that point I pr knot.....generally I prefer the PR kont unless the leader break strength runs the risk of breaking the mainline away from the knot...pr knot is 99 percent if tied right most of the time..so 20lb braid breaks at 30 or more.....so i can size up to 30 or 40lb leader and get break strengths that of 40lb braid tying an alberto....fg knot is about 80% of ABS but still whicked strong. when i did fg knot lighter lines i used the daichi knot assist.

    I do two half hitches, tighten and then trim the leader tag, then do a rizzuto, and trim to 1/16 of a inch of braid left in tag end. Lastly which I like as a last safety precaution if my customers are going after big tuna. One small drop of super glue on the tag end of the braid coming out of the rizzuto, and a pinch down with fingers not allowing the tag end of the braid to slip back through the rizzuto. Just my way I finish it.

    Hello TA.... greetings from Peru again.... it is Sunday and it is time to go around some interesting videos.... thank you for sharing the complete series of your FG knot. I saw you hurt your hand ...do you know what do I use to tight the knot? .... I use those "rubber corks" of wine bottles.... just do some wraps of the braid line tag around the rubber cork and you can work with your naked hands ( without gloves)... I always carry some of those rubber corks in my tackle box.... in this way I avoid to hurt myself....thanks!!!!!

      I prefer to glove up or use a dowel wrapped with a few layers of tape. I pulled close to the point where it would cut me. It was almost enough to sinch the knot down 100%...With gloves or taped dowel. I've heard of the cork trick before. Just never seem to have one handy.

    As a guy who fishes freshwater species, I tried with 10lb braid to 10lb mono and literally just couldn't with this method. Also doing 27 wraps with tension via mouth I was able to do it in 2 minutes, but since I usually stop at 20 I can do it in about 1 min 30-40s. I tried tying the knot with gloves and it was a lesson learned to say the least, never done it before and your way was much faster with gloves in the video, but again I don't think I could do it with the line sizes I'm generally going to use. If I even were to have gloves on while tying an FG I would do it the way the aussies do with making a triangle in your hand, but I'd have to practice doing it that way too since I don't.

      The key is reallllllly cinching the knot down. Technically 1 half hitch is good enough. All said the pr knot with a bobbin finish is king.. Hell you don't even need a bobbin if your arms are long enough to swing a 2 oz weight

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      That's what it sounds like. When you lean the wraps back you are seating them under your fingers with some tension. That way when you pull tight. The leader gets compressed without kind of getting squeeezed out

    I never understand why someone would use this knot... by using your nails you can push the mainline off the rod end leader NO MATTER HOW HARD IT BITES INTO THE LEADER. Which happens everytime it comes into your eyes on the rod. And by biting, or essentially cutting, into the leader you have done just that and I've never met someone who willing would kink or crush their line. And to say it's secure because of the multiple wraps, which too are just cuts and crimps into the leader, is like saying "it's not cut all the way through, but cut twenty times."

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +3

      Hi Jacob,
      This knot is definitely not for everyone. But braid to leader knots are very weak. Most are less than 50% strength. Problem with braid to leader knots. The braid cuts the leader. What knot do you use?
      FG knot is widely known as one of the strongest knots you can tie. It's the strongest knot that I know of that doesn't require tools. I've spliced miles of hollow core...and am putting together a PR knot tutorial. As it's become one of my favorite knots. But the FG is a worthwhile knot to learn if you need maximum strength and require a leader that runs through the guides.
      One of the most important things about the FG is to really cinch it down tight. If not tight. Exactly what you describe could occur....

    • @FishLubber
      @FishLubber 5 років тому

      Flat out the best knot in my arsenal for connecting braid to mono or flouro. There is nothing stronger or smaller I have seen yet. Once I worked through the newness of tying this knot I have never broke a connection. I have worked it hard over the last year. If anything breaks, its usually the other end of the mono to lure side. It allows you to cast any lures through rod eyes without any snagging. My best day over the last year was 7 california yellowtail on 25 lb test mono from 15 to 20 lbs per fish. Be open minded and practice until you do it right. I end it with a little fly tying gel (uv clear fly finish) and UV flashlight to harden the braid so it does not unravel or fluff.

    • @landbasedgamers
      @landbasedgamers 5 років тому

      @@FishLubber Try 20 laps of Rizzuto Finish. the flush is gone and you can cut the end bit as short as you want and not worry it become a fluff. and no need for a UV finish
