      Andy James is a perfectionist that comes through his playing that doesn’t mean he has no soul . It means he adds the right amount of vibrato and has perfect alternate picking that not many players have.. I personally love it . It’s refreshing listening to him and satisfying to watch.

    Great seeing Andy on here. Spent a good amount of time playing guitar with him at college & even then when we were 16-17, he was such a good player. We would always trade Malmsteen & Petrucci licks playing in the hallways of the music block. If your reading mate, hope you are good!

      Oh shit that’s so cool. Was he AMAZING at 16-17? Or has he improved drastically since then? I’m always interested as to how these guys developed their playing throughout the years.

  • @frayman

    thats a good point Andy made is that he dives straight into the deep end and clean up. If I remember correctly, Shawn Lane also had the same philosophy. The reason why that is true is because of the picking dynamics. At a very fast paced picking, there is far less time for string hopping so you need to develop your own way of solving those string changes as efficiently as possible. Troy Grady does such a good job of explaining all this.

    This was a great interview. It is so refreshing to hear positive comments about EMG pickups these days. Andy said it right, where he basically said if you are a terrible player, the EMG's will shine a bright spotlight on your deficiencies. I am also a 57/66 player, and let me tell you, EMG's make you play more cleanly and with better technique, because if you play sloppy, that is what you will hear. I love passive pickups too - Dimarzio, Seymour Duncan, PRS HFS, etc. - but the clarity and power in an active EMG is perfect for any player, if they would just give them a real chance.

    What started as a simple download of the instagram app brought me to Andy James and Angel Vivaldi, both of these guys are consistently evolving in their playing. Flawless tone and impeccable clarity in their notes, almost gave up on that style of music if it wasn’t for these two! Shred on!!!!!

    • @theconvert1208
      @theconvert1208 6 років тому

      Well, I'd say talent is a thing...it's just not an innate quality one is born with. We develop talent if we work and learn, but it's also true that, for example, physical and mental things we cannot control do play a part.

    By the way, about 45:12, you guys do stock Kemper! Andy doesn't use the DV Mark, he uses the Kemper Profiler. He didn't use it here cause if he had wanted to take his Kemper, he would have had to unplug it from his recording setup, and he's currently recording an album so unplugging everything would be annoying..
