- In this video we retrofit some USB power outlets to our new 2022 Land Rover Defender L663 that had missing power outlets from the factory due to component shortages.
Same issue with my dads new defender. We managed to get the wires out through the holes without having to strip apart or remove anything. We also found the wires for the front dashboard one. 👍🏻
Yes i have done the front one today - will upload the video - if you can reach them that easier !
They are upside down so that the Parents can see which is what from the front seats😂. (That is what a clever salesman would say.)

That’s a lot easier than me sticking a finger in the two holes and prying and pulling the foam off bit by bit. Was really bummed they shipped without this like you said that’s not a chip shortage thing not a lot of chips in there, if we were short usb ports phones and all sorts of things wouldn’t be shipping.
I didn’t see the point of going USB-C yet, little early at least here in the states. Looking forward to your splitter to use the other two slots.
Hi Simon, great video, hope it all goes back together. With Land Rover removing things like this and the clear view mirror, do you get a corresponding reduction in the price of the car?
Simon, I'm pretty sure that the 3rd pin on the plugs is for LED illumination! Not all of them have the LEDs, but some of them do! My Evoque has illumination on the cup holder cigarette lighter for example.

Hey Simon - do you by any chance know if there are pre-existing AC control wiring (the electric line and plug) for Defender without 3 zone climate control?
On Topix my 2023 Defender shows a outstanding campaign for missing USB sockets, so will the retrofit them on the future?

Great video. I am trying to convert the existing 2nd row USB-A ports with a traditional 12v port on a 2018 Discovery 5. The USB-As are becoming obsolete as they only produce 12 watts. The traditional 12v will give 120 watts and I can plug whatever I like, ac inverter or USB-C. When I went to buy the new port from LR, they told me the 12v port will not work as the vehicle is designed for USB-A. If the difference in the plug and socket is because the fuse rating could be different (at the 12v accessory plug is usually 10 or 20Amp and the USB may only be a 5Amp) the rating of the cable my not be enough for the 12v accessory socket and I could cause big problems, like a fire. But I am hoping the entire system is 12v and the reducer happens at the port level as you mentioned in your video. I can't seem to get a straight answer. from LR. Do you have a point of view on this? Thanks.
Hi Paul - this is a good question. My logic is this.... Land Rover fit fuses to suit the wire.... this is the basic principle of fuses.. so if you draw too much power the fuse will blow ! so you can fit what you like and trust the fuse. Also remember that 10amps output on a 5 V usb is only 5 amps input at 12v ! One thing to watch is those 3 way connectors are different.. they have a little block in the corner to stop you fitting different types....
Love the videos - I just got a 2023 130 and Land Rover included 2 USB A’s in the rear console, and USB c everywhere else so perhaps he shortage is improving. I am going to be adding the console cooler which I couldn’t get on my order - cooler is here. Does anyone know if there is already a wiring harness to plug it in or does something have to be tapped?
Thank you Simon for this and your other video showing how to strip it, helps a lot however I already have two USB's in my D300 23MY so need to find out if there are cigarette lighter power feeds. Do you perhaps know - If not do you know if they're a loom I could purchase for them?

So you have 2 outlets in the rear ? I guess this may be the later loom like my 90 - the 110 has 4 connectors. I am making a Y loom that will convert 1 connector to 2
@@L663 Yes I have the two USB's but only have the blanking plates/covers where the cigar sockets are supposed to be. (two outer holes)

Hi Simon thanks for the mention 😆 those rear plugs are they a 12 volt feed or already a 5 volt feed hence the awkward plug to stop them getting muddled up with a lighter socket?
Your welcome. All the plugs are 12v supply - the 12v to 5v conversion is done in the port housing. I think the lighter socket is rated at a higher current than the voltage outlet.... 5 amps as 5 volts is only 2 amps at 12v input so the fuse/wire rating for the USB sockets is much lower than the lighter socket ( thats my theory )
Nice one Simon 🤓 not sure if you have seen others but my 90 (X) has the rear heated seats but the controllers are the same as the those in the front - not sure if that’s a spec sheet tick or another LR cut back by replacing with those push buttons. 🤷♂️
Yes I need to look at the retrofit of that - but less urgent.... front dash USB next.... and sorting out the manufacturing defect on my rear seat crossmember ! ( that is turning into a story )
What story is it turning into Simon about your seat crossmember. I’m sure the manufacture’s love you stripping there cars down and finding problems. Or shall I say creating problems with that orange pen of yours 😂 And why are your stripping the seats anyways. If you want a van wouldn’t you buy a Defender 90 van #Justsaying
@@StephenJ1991 Well good question - I got offered the 90 as a cancelled order so was happy to buy that. The 90 rear seats are a point of some contention in that they do not fold that well. The lower seat base is removable - sort of - lots of people doing that. The rear seat back is also removable - Land Rover has fitted a neat mechanism to allow this to be done. But it seems that my rear crossmember has not been made correctly make it difficult to remove the rear seats - say i want to move a washing machine etc.
@@L663 Looking forward to your solution to the rear seat fold debacle. Having come from a Disco 4 to a new 90, the compromises Landrover have made are starting to become a tad weary. Caveat Emptor I suppose. 🤨
@@L663 oh I have removed the base a few times, frustratingly, didn’t know those seat backs were removable - only had it 14 months 😅
Simon, this Defender is equipped with the new IPC with yellow alerts?

@@L663 I observed here a nem template on IPC: 2023 these lights are yellow or a “clear orange” and had a difference on white pixels.
The difference plug and socket could be because the fuse rating could be different at the 12v accessory plug is usually 10 or 20Amp and the USB may only be a 5Amp therefore the rating of tha cable my not be enough for the 12v accessory socket.

LR are supposed to retro-fit them when they come back into stock…
I have not been told to be the case for my car.

As a learner driver with me my wife and George and my daughter ( 20 and passed her test ) it was about £400 from memory. This will probably shoot up when George passes his test !

The deletion has nothing to do with a chip shortage . There's absolutely no shortage of 12V-5V converters or regulators and there never has been. Whomever is telling you that is trying to pull the wool over your eves ... JLR is just trying to save a few cents.
I supppse LR is charging for them even though they are not fitting them?

Hi Bruce - no problem the Y looms are in production - I had a fright with the connectors and the little "square" in the corner - but the Y looms should accept both types so we are good !

Good video again don't forget to let your viewers know if you leave a USB transformer in a cigarette lighter plug and it is over poor quality it can sometimes interfere with the signal on the radio
I’m confused! What does a shortage of computer chips have to do with these power outlets? With your fix there, I didn’t see any computer chips involved. Are you saying there is a shortage of the actual power outlets? If so, where did you get the ones you just used?
So the USB sockets change the 12v car voltage to 5v inside the USB port body - this needs chips to do that. The ones i got were used ones from crashed cars on ebay ! The odd thing is the 12v metal "can" type of lighter socket does not have any IC's in !
