Hell they may even see us as Gods. I really went into extreme depth about how ants may see us…….huh.
I only just realized there are actually multiple types of tripods. I noticed some looked different but I just thought was due to different angles/lighting, but they are actually different. The first one we see in the movie has no tentacles or cages, it only has heat rays, so its purely for destruction. Whereas the ones at 1:50 and 3:08 have tentacles and cages, but no heat rays, they are meant for harvesting. And there is also a third variant that have both harvesting equipment and heatrays, apparently called warriors. They have bigger, smoother heads and 5 lights instead of 3, and can be seen at 1:42. Edit: huh, I just noticed the one they take down at the end has tentacles and heatrays, but doesnt appear to have cages or the bigger head, weird.
Yes 3 Variants, And all Tripods have tentacles, I don't know why but they do, my Theory would be maybe used as a rope for Aliens (When they leave the Machines)
For a lot of us, this movie was absolutely terrifying when it first came out People love it now but back then everybody at some point was terrified Just imagine if this actually does happen one day in the future. What would we really do

Seems to be them planting their red weed into the ground and around areas. Either that or them using their tentacles to find other humans within cracks of houses.
One thing this movie does better than any other mainstream invasion film is conveying hopelessness. Seriously, if not for viruses, they would have won. The military was nearly wiped out, with national guardsmen killing the tripod at the end of the film. Humanity essentially was just fleeing to avoid being harvested by the time they got sick and started to die on their own accord.
2:24 to 2:31 is probably the most ominous shot of the film. The fact that they had spread the blood that much in a relatively short amount of time was terrifying. Also the sky had a red haze to it because of how much blood there was
It wasn’t blood, but it was a red weed planted by the harvesters, but you are somewhat correct, because this red weed was used to terraform Earth to make it more habitable for the Martian’s, and to do this they had to use human blood
1:26 The main sense of dread to me is that you see all those soldiers charging in to give the civilians more time to escape, and then you see a tripod coming out of the fireball no worse for wear like they're invincible or can take a lot of punishment. However, that sense of dread goes away the second you see the fact they had shields up, giving a hint that without that protection they might have been ripped to pieces.
The other scary part is that these tripods were buried before Earth had us, so their defences had to be quite weak, but now they have advanced, so now I'm more scared at what they have now! Remember, they have been monitoring us for millions of years!
@DontHugMeImDro0per Probably hyper advanced and probably bigger than the og probably has the black smoke (it's basically smoke that kills any organic life it was in the og wotw.) and the heat rays must be more and more brutal and the shields oh dear god they must be basically immune to anything.
The movie really manages to capture the feeling of what it would be like if it was real. This also explains why there were people back in the day thinking there was an actual alien invasion.
1:33 That’s an Uberpod. One of the many commander tripods responsible for all of the major attacks against Humanity. It’s much more bigger in size and it has 5 headlights instead of the normal 3. Edit: In this scene, the left tripod was also an Uberpod, it also had 5 head lights. The right tripod could have been another variant of tripod or just a soldier tripod helping out its 2 commanders. 2x edit: actually I think all 3 of them are Uberpods.
@@Shregurun93 Maybe it's because at that point of the invasion, the Tripods were starting to converge to a single point. My theory is that, after wiping the largest cities, by logic, whoever survived the first attacks would evacuate to countryside. By default, that would be the next hotspot for killing and harvesting, so the Tripods would be there too (you may remember that at the ferry scene, we can see a total of 9 Tripods in a single area, surrounding a single area. 10 Tripods, if you count a quick lighning that comes down during a quick frame of one of the scenes, that were probably another pack of aliens coming down to another Tripod). This mass convergence would atract a major number of various classes of Tripods as well, so by chance, 3 Commander class appeared together at the same site.
@@Hiky01Prime that is actually a smart martian plan in annihilating humanity, target the major cities then go after the countryside. I still find it kinda weird how there are still 3 commander tripods in one area but your theory already answered that.
@@Shregurun93 Yeah, it's a logic plan. Those lucky enough to survive the first wave of attacks would move as far as possible from the epicenter of chaos. Naturally, they would converge to areas that were once remote or not as populated as the major cities. By default, that would creat new hotspots, and the Tripods would only need to move to areas that were once not as populated as the major cities. As for the Commander class Tripods, maybe they got there by chance. I think it would be easier for more Tripods of the same class to converge at a single area by then. Or...maybe more Commanders appeared to even the odds against the military. By the second day of invasion, the military would be more hostile against the aliens, they would start to mobilize their biggest guns, so, to correspond to that level of retaliation, the Commanders were sent to level the military forces more easily. Or faster.
@@Playlist4Ella actually they have 5 limbs: 1 back leg, 2 front legs that can double as arms, and 2 tiny front arms used for grasping. this does reinforce the theory though. tripods have 3 main legs, and either 2 heatrays or tentacles, that match up to the two tiny hands the aliens have. really the only main anatomical difference is that the tripods have an odd number of lights, while the aliens have an even number of eyes. but it's probably just for the sake of being easier to pilot.
@@joshuaespinoza8325actually the tiny front hands are mirrored by those wierd insect looking mandible things on the front of the machines the tenticles works however
I will always think of the tripods (at least the ones in both of the War of the Worlds films) as being reminiscent of Achilles. The term "Achilles heel" comes from the myth of the Greek hero Achilles who was dipped into the river styx by his mother which granted him invulnerability wherever the water touched his body, but because his mother held him by his heel the water only reached the rest of his body which meant that a simple strike to the heel could bring him down. I make the comparison because in much the same way, despite the tripods coming across as invulnerable we find out that they have two simple(ish) weaknesses. The first being an apparently weak interior given that we see Tom Cruise's character take down a harvester with nothing but a couple of grenades, and the second being a lack of immunity to the various bugs and bacterias on Earth that we as a species built up an immunity to over time. Either way their story is a story of irony; a race of aliens with technology far more advanced than our own seemed to get the upper hand but ultimately got destroyed by their own oversight.
@@kittymandias-kv6wr And martians in this movie look like Notre Dame's gargoyles. Not sure if Wells intended them to be that way though, but his book was clearly a reference to William the Bastard's attack on the England.
Without the shields, the aliens would lose a straight fight with most human militaries. If 5 Javelin hits can take one out, then what will they do against depleted uranium shells of Abrams tanks, or GPS guided bombs dropped by a Super Hornet?

Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi movies. My only criticism is that it ends to abruptly. It felt like there should have been something more between Rachel and Ray escaping the tripod and the end.
Spielberg’s WOTW is genuinely my favourite movie of all time, and has been since I was around 8. As an adult, I have grown to love and appreciate the film even more for not only its cinematic value and horror factor, but it’s themes about family and humanity as well
You ain't alone fam, i've watched this movie since i was 6 and up to this day (21yo) i have seen it minimum 70 times. MINIMUM cause i cant remember how many times i saw it when i was a child.
I love how the tripod turns around to face Tom Cruise at 3:44. It’s almost like a human being bitten by an ant. It doesn’t actually hurt it in any meaningful manner, yet it still gets agitated.
The ending of this movie was really spot on. Because of how true it is. If an extra terrestrial species does come and invade Earth they might just die as soon as they’re exposed to the atmosphere. I mean humans can’t survive on Mars, Saturn, Mercury or Uranus for various obvious reasons alone. Don’t forget all the insects and diseases and stuff.
@@MasterTopHat Most military vehicles are EMP shielded, hence them working in the movie. Its just that the Tripods have some OP shields which conventional weaponry can hardly penetrate it. However, the shields have range, and once you are in it, the thing is toast. So I think thats the reason why some fell during the battle of Japan. Urban warfare is a nightmare, even for aliens.
Don't know if someone commented this already but look closely at 3:23, while the tripod stands up, there are other tentacles trying to reach Ray. Makes me think one single alien controls the tripod while much others the tentacles and thery are not in "perfect" comunication.
My alien guy was more focused on Rachel than his father.... this is the proof that the aliens love more the humans who scream in therror.... probably the scream make the human blood more tastier for aliens!!!
Honestly this would be a horror movie for the martians themselves. The blokes just happily and calmly feeding off humans like cattle, finding a new source of food for survival, before realising something is violently ravaging your body and you’ve been oblivious to the real threat all along
Those are my favorite versions of the Fighting Machines in any War of the Worlds adaptation as they’re both terrifying and realistic. The only disappointing part is they didn’t have the Black Smoke which they could’ve used it to wipe out multiple targets in a major population center, just sayin’, but I’m giving credit for having energy shields, like in the 1953 version, which we haven’t seen one in the original book, but is scientifically possible that you can turn light into solid matter, but not in our technological advancement level.
Nah. According to the crew in the behind the scenes footage, they are fully mechanical. The red sphincter-like hole in the tripod is likely made of a material similar to rubber and plastic.
Parts of every movie with some alien or monster destroying the world -the “oh my god what is that” while the thing just sits there -the “first attack” scene -the “everyone fails at getting away” scene -the “military attempts to kill it but gets destroyed” scene
I would love to see a "military does much better than anyone expected" movie. Martian: Fires death laser Death laser: Does absolutely nothing against tank *Martian music stops* And then its just 2 1/2 hours of horrified martians trying to hide in basements while an Abrams slowly rolls past in front of the window.

1:32 that's the uberpod, It's like a warrior-leader of the other normal tripods. It has 5 spot lights instead of 3, and it has the hability to set itself on fire to damage or kill nearby enemy

Could it be that someone actually found it's weaknesses. I thought in this movie if one tripod is destroyed all of them will be exterminated. As if the aliens were sent on a suicide mission that if one em dies all of them should before the humans kicked their ass and steal their technology. Well actually they did now!
@@greyghost61I thought the alien died because when it came out of the pod it’s immune system could handle the bacteria, sicknesses, particles, and viruses that we as a species have become immune to
Adore the orchestral score and sound design in this film. The sounds of the machines are genuinely intimidating and have a really well-executed sense of scale and ambience, and paired with that dramatic orchestral score mixed into the background it really just adds so much atmosphere and a real sense of dread throughout the entire runtime. Love how the choir and strings add that tinge of tragedy and desperation. One movie I can watch over and over and not get sick of haha

I don't know why this movie got so much hate when it came out. Yeah, Dakota Fanning's screeching got old really fast, but the tripods were awesome and the atmosphere was fantastic. (Though the aliens were so weirdly cute I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for that one at the end.)
No joke, I actually really loved the design of the aliens and would've loved to see them in some kind of old Star Trek interaction, like in Deep Space Nine. To this day, sometimes I imagine these aliens crossovering with Predators, humanity from the Alien timeline amd other more futuristic settings, and not as the mute agressive villains here, but as just another alien civilization in the galaxy. Again, much like Star Trek. _(or Star Wars too)_

The way I see it is if your in one of the cages just made the inside, if you’re outside and running, get into building cover and use urban warfare tactics
One cool detail I've noticed in the first scene is that the military forces are both a mix of Army AND Marines. Further highlighting the desperation of the US Military in that they seem to be deploying everything they have wherever they can, no matter the circumstance.
ok so as far as i can tell there are 3 types of tripods: fighting machines: seen in the beginning of the movie. slim heads, no sidelights, dual heatrays that can vaporize and destroy harvesters/handling machines: no heatrays, they're the ones with the cages and tentacles. they also turn human blood into fertilizer for red weed to make the planet more habitable for them. they have pink sidelights upgraded fighting machine/uberpod: they're the ones who tip over the ferry and do that giant raid on the hill. way wider heads, orange sidelights, and i believe stronger heatrays
Crying when watching soldiers full attack on aliens and throw everything to slow the advance of aliens and help people to evacuate. They have the fear and know it won’t work but they still face the fear and sacrifice themselves

4:37 love how even in moments they know they’ve lost, they still try to fight back, someone ran up and tried to save him and someone was holding on to him
2:22 Imagine how hopeless you would feel seeing that. For him to see a red facade of his former world must be shattering. How could they come back from this? Is he just prolonging the inevitable death of himself and his children by trying to survive in constantly worsening conditions? tl:dr dreadful view
electromagnetic based shields are fascinating. This one seems to be exceptional motivated seeing it stop high speed platforms like the AGM 88 HARM seen fired in the beg of this clip. Seeing this type of EM based shielding operate is interesting and it underscores a larger need to advance the materials sciences to catch up with the exciting advances made in general, organic, and physical chemistry fields over the past few decades. For example, we now can stabilize the nitrosamine structure of volatile yet useful and highly energetic compounds when applied as either explosives or propellent. An example is CL 20, which American scientists developed in the 1980s and is used for propellent. While we (America) are still figuring out how to best operate it safely in the field (transporting to, from contested environments, naval applications, etc.), the chinese have leaped ahead and now operate many types of thermo kinetic weapon platforms using CL 20 as an explosive. This is concerning as CL 20 has a 35% higher Relative Effectiveness Factor (a measure of explosive yield compared to 1x unit tnt/kg) vs our explosives applied to frontline weapons systems; these namely include HMX, RDX, 2,4,6 DNT, and 2,4,6 DNT, also known as TNT. Only recently have we discovered that HMX and less practically (bc it is less energetic and less useful for our frontline platforms) TNT can be utilized in a 2:1 molar ratio with TNT as a cryocrystal candidate in efforts to of course stabilize an attractive yet highly unstable compound in CL 20.

One thing this movie does better than any other mainstream invasion film is conveying hopelessness. Seriously, if not for viruses, they would have won. The military was nearly wiped out, with national guardsmen killing the tripod at the end of the film.

Edit: In this scene, the left tripod was also an Uberpod, it also had 5 head lights. The right tripod could have been another variant of tripod or just a soldier tripod helping out its 2 commanders.
2x edit: actually I think all 3 of them are Uberpods.
They were. Those 3 were the same.
@@Hiky01Prime why were there 3 commander tripods there? Its usually 1 commander tripod then a large group of soldier tripods and harvester tripods.
Or faster.
I like that they have hands similar to their Tripods. It's like they based it on their own anatomy so they can control it more naturally
Its how our mechs in our fiction are humanoid
They also only have 3 limbs. 2 arms and a single leg. Reinforcing your point.
@@Playlist4Ella actually they have 5 limbs:
1 back leg,
2 front legs that can double as arms, and
2 tiny front arms used for grasping.
this does reinforce the theory though. tripods have 3 main legs, and either 2 heatrays or tentacles, that match up to the two tiny hands the aliens have. really the only main anatomical difference is that the tripods have an odd number of lights, while the aliens have an even number of eyes. but it's probably just for the sake of being easier to pilot.
@@joshuaespinoza8325actually the tiny front hands are mirrored by those wierd insect looking mandible things on the front of the machines
the tenticles works however
I will always think of the tripods (at least the ones in both of the War of the Worlds films) as being reminiscent of Achilles.

Yes, you nailed it, there are 3 different species of tripods
No. According to the movie, the tripods are basically multi-purpose. Reminder, the one in boston had tentacles and its death-rays equipped. Why would a fighter-pod have tentacles? Because all tripods are multi-purpose. It’s why the cages are held up by what are essentially cables since they are reattachable. It’s why there are holes for the said cages on the first tripod in the intersection in the movie. Also, having your war machines have food/fertilizer hanging on their backs would allow for the pilots to be well-fed and help with the harvesting operation immensely.

8:11 They were drunk and lost in the battle because they consume fermented blood. Maybe they just got alcohol poisoning and not a common cold 😮
Blood types probably.
No. Sick people!
@@russkatherealoriginal6904the blood type theory is really stupid 😒 it's also unsupported by everything in the movie

Its kinda funny how you can see the Result of the Martian's sick / drunk piloting on the tripod 7:19
Bacteria lol
Edit: also i think the martian tries to activate their heart Ray but It Ran out of power or sum
7:46 it’s so interesting how weak the tripod are without their shields
They were also infected as well.
I thought is friendly
@@Uber_cia_nigga Would have been a cliche yet interesting twist.
Oh
2:26 that scene is so depressing because even if they defeat the aliens there is no way they can fix the lands after because of the red weeds
the red weeds are an invasive species from mars that pollutes our planet and kills wildlife and there's no going back from that
There is,
It was shown in the movie that the red weed roots got infected by bacteria and dried up just like Martians did

This movie terrified me as a child. Could you imagine being harvested for fuel like this?
The way I see it is if your in one of the cages just made the inside, if you’re outside and running, get into building cover and use urban warfare tactics
One cool detail I've noticed in the first scene is that the military forces are both a mix of Army AND Marines. Further highlighting the desperation of the US Military in that they seem to be deploying everything they have wherever they can, no matter the circumstance.
ok so as far as i can tell there are 3 types of tripods:
fighting machines: seen in the beginning of the movie. slim heads, no sidelights, dual heatrays that can vaporize and destroy
harvesters/handling machines: no heatrays, they're the ones with the cages and tentacles. they also turn human blood into fertilizer for red weed to make the planet more habitable for them. they have pink sidelights
upgraded fighting machine/uberpod: they're the ones who tip over the ferry and do that giant raid on the hill. way wider heads, orange sidelights, and i believe stronger heatrays
2:23 damn, that's gonna have huge impact on the economy
Crying when watching soldiers full attack on aliens and throw everything to slow the advance of aliens and help people to evacuate. They have the fear and know it won’t work but they still face the fear and sacrifice themselves
Looking back, Ray wasn't expecting to get pulled back into the cage. He was ready to die in the machine to save everyone.
This movie is my favorite and my mom's. I watched it at age 6 and was terrified of thunderstorms seeing lightning striking the ground made me think the tripods will come out of the ground. I still think this is the best horror movie especially with Tom Cruise in it
7:49 that one two combo finished him
I always love the part where the tripod turns around at 3:45 like "you fucking what mate"
I imagined he was going
BITCH HOW ARE YOU NOT DEAD?!
Same lol
I love that the crows were lining up to get first dibs.
4:37 love how even in moments they know they’ve lost, they still try to fight back, someone ran up and tried to save him and someone was holding on to him
2:22
Imagine how hopeless you would feel seeing that. Remember Ray has witnesses the downfall of everything he knows, he saw them arrive, obliterate all settlements, walk straight through the military and also saw how they eat/drink people. For him to see a red facade of his former world must be shattering. How could they come back from this? Is he just prolonging the inevitable death of himself and his children by trying to survive in constantly worsening conditions?
tl:dr
dreadful view
electromagnetic based shields are fascinating.
Only recently have we discovered that HMX and less practically (bc it is less energetic and less useful for our frontline platforms) TNT can be utilized in a 2:1 molar ratio with TNT as a cryocrystal candidate in efforts to of course stabilize an attractive yet highly unstable compound in CL 20.
so basically China is aliens from a movie now
Jesus fucking Christ slow down there, Atleast offer a simplified explanation to those without several degrees in physics and chemistry.

Fun fact: Tom actually went to their home world to train for this film, some of these scenes were kept in the final production
