steam deck is just as much of a console as the switch. It ticks literally every box that a console does. Does the fact that the ps2 and ps3 could have linux installed make them PCs now and not consoles?
@@HearMeLearn except the official website itself states that Steam Deck is a handheld PC. Valve have no where used the word console. Also Steam is a PC digital store. It's Nintendo. The answer is it won't. Nintendo never cared for other things outside their company. They will build how they want it to be. It's their way or the highway for them
One of the greatest "tricks" the Steam Deck has that other handhelds just can't achieve, is keeping pretty playable stats when running in 10W mode. I wonder if these newer Z1 chips will be able to keep up the playability of games at much lower TDPs in the same way - because power and high performance is great, but battery life matters _way_ more for a handheld. So that really needs to be targeted specifically and I honestly have my doubts.
Would it parallel the idea of the bystander effect (except for enterprises)? If there is too much competition, the consumer get decision paralysis of which is best for them to buy, the target audience is still rather niche. Other companies might decide it’s not worth developing in (yet) especially if they need to compete with the heavy hitters?
I'm getting between 100 and 120 on the latest Star Wars game on my top end PC. Heck, my Win Max 2 got a steady 35 fps most of the time with a few dips and spikes.
I was going to go on my own "what if" and "how about this" tangent. Ultimately, I hope to see options flourish. We have Nintendo embracing the play anywhere mentality. We have the power to play our PC games anywhere with desktops (mini and the "normal" towers), laptops, and the variety of handheld PC devices out now. Phones are wonderfully viable options thanks to many of the games from indie devs appearing on Android and iOS, along with streaming options from Sony, Microsoft, Steam, and nVidia. It is one hell of a time to be alive! If I can be so bold, we all should start speculating on when Sony and Microsoft jump on the whole "switch" style format. How that would work...I have some ideas on how to make it work.
Omg he said it, I've been talking about how Sony should push more into pc gaming, more of a store and not an os, but it adds to what I've been thinking and wanting forever now
@Daniel Aguirre oh sorry didn't realize you were a simpleton. The steam deck let's you play any game, and has better ergonomics than the ally too, it's quite amusing how everyone jumps on the bus for a *powerful* handheld even if it's battery life is worse since it uses more power, you would have to make the graphics closer to the steam deck to get good battery life and the portability factor sucks too, not going to be able to do much without a knm... it's just a money sink for Microsoft that was poorly thought out... and all the blind bots like you that know little of PC are gonna hop on board because *MoRe POwEr* even if every other aspect of it is shit.
Based on past products I've purchased / wanted to buy / still would love to get my hands on the 'Playstation PC' could absolutely be viable. Granted I have no idea what the gimmick or unique integration should be but they are clever enough to come up with one. When I was deep into minidisc and purchasing a new portable player ever year (possibly some planned obsolescence there tbh of dead units after 365 days of use on the dot..) I still bought a all in one CD/tape/tuner/MD stereo because it meet my needs. The only in Japan integrated MD PC would have lived in my dreams constantly if I'd known it's existence, and if I had the $ (and patience) to recreate my old setup now with it I totally would.
6:21 It's actually quite within Sony's character to try and go after Nintendo. Sony already backstabbed Nintendo once before. The Nintendo Playstation deal went sour because Sony tried to backstab Nintendo, and Nintendo found out about it. Sony might still be a little sore after the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show where they announced that they would be making a disk system for Nintendo, and Nintendo turned around and said "Nope, Phillips is making that". Publicly.
I have a switch lite, but the screen is too small for me. I was thinking of getting the Switch Oled, but I'm starting to dislike the Nintendo online store. Also, over time, I've purchased several Steam and GOG games. The other day I walked into a Best Buy and saw the Asus Rog Ally, and I think I am going to go with that device instead. Its more expensive but it seems like all things considered, its a good deal for me.
I feel like despite all this, eventually people will just default to the established brands. Sony, Nintendo, Valve and MS are the only companies that can subsidize their products enough to make their handhelds attractive price wise. Everyone else is just flooding into a tiny niche market of $700-$1500 handheld PC's. Even if each brand has a gaming handheld, I feel Sony, MS and Valve would be all very similar to each other with Nintendo being the only one with enough unique software to be attractive.
I think we have too many emulation based devices considering most sub $300 smartphones can emulate 75% of what there is to even emulate. Most people already have a capable device ready to go. Use an a console controller with a $20 clip or buy a Razer Kishi if you got the budget and save spending even more on a device, while also not having to carry around another. Streaming, pointless for many people so no opinion and it's pretty much available on everything with a screen. PC based gaming handhelds are still early, but I'm interested to see how fast we can transition and make it a common platform on the market.
Gpd win max 2 has an oculink port that blows thunderbolt 4 out of the water for egpu. Probably the best one if you have the money and can handle the form factor.
Many of them are not that different, I would argue it is better to think of them as closer to laptops than consoles. We can have too many consoles as that implies console exclusives, whereas I would argue you cannot have too many laptops as more laptops just means more competition which implies more innovation to give your own product an edge.
@@JDabz96 that's just wrong though. It's only better at being cheap. If you're someone who has more money than what to do with it (plenty of PC gamers it seems) there are objectively better options.

The ally is a really tempting device for this price. It feels like the device the switch 2 should ve been. Would be interesting to see steam os running on the Asus competitor. ☮️
The single most important thing with these handhelds is support. With a switch you're pretty much guaranteed to have it from launch day to the day it is discontinued and usually a good few years beyond that. The only one that comes close so far is the steam deck in that way and honestly the only one I would trust again would be another switch or Nintendo type portable hybrid console. Microsoft,Sony I don't know if I'd trust them especially Sony after the debacle with the Vita.
Competition and choice are good but it's all so overwhelming sometimes. It feels like there's a new one of these things being announced every other month. Computer companies have plenty of laptops and desktops available, but considering what almost everyone uses a handheld PC for (Steam and emulation), the range of hardware for pc and retro specific stuff is needlessly crowded.
I mean, the reviews clearly depict a night and day difference with integrated RDNA 3, a number of systems are now running the mobile 7000 series and it’s a significant bump in performance, not to mention the newer generation Zen Cores…
It don't mean shit when navigating windows and inputs are gonna be horrendous on the ally, I play way more than controller only games... people are to simple minded, even the battery life is worse on the ally
Naaah especially since the 90s-2000s, everyone wanted to be gameboy and ds, it ranges from psp success, which is not gba or ds success, to gizmondo's widescreen variant success, which was never released due to their company going caput.
Back when the Microsoft Xbox game pass PC app and the Microsoft app store was heavily advertised for Windows 10, 6 years ago. Microsoft could have made an Xbox edition Surface pro or even some other portable computer that let you play the Xbox Game pass app on the go. Another thing is all these handheld gaming pc's all have there own flaws. For starters is that the Steam platform requires you have internet to access your Steam library and same goes with most of the other gaming distribution stores like the ones from Ubisoft, Epic Games, EA, Microsoft, and others. But there will always be that battery life and storage issues on these devices. Along with the weird unstandardized sizing and button layouts.
What we need is a portable device that can allow users to buy game cards. That way games can be heavily optimized while also giving the users the ability to do normal pc stuff, like how the steam deck works but better
Man, I remember when handhelds were said to be dead. No one is gone to want a handheld system, when you have a phone. And that was when the 3DS was coming out. Then those people said the 3DS would be the last handheld. And then the Switch happened. Boy, it sure is a strange world we live in, ever since handheld gaming systems went extinct. ;p
Looking forward to the Ally, but I'm beyond tired of Windows as the only viable gaming platform. Steam Deck has proven once and for all that Linux is viable competition, something we Linux users have been saying for years. The flood of Windows handhelds just perpetuates the shittiness that is Windows. I very much want an Ally, but I will be putting some form of Linux/SteamOS on it.
I'm still waiting for a handheld with ray tracing with gaming from the internal storage using nvme ssds with the option to choose the resolution like 1080p, 2k and even 4k and refresh rates like 120 hz to 240 hz. Like the Intel nuc beast canyon in a handheld device but with upgradeable nvme ssd and upgradeable ram, 1,000 nits brightness mini led or micro led display. Something sony could make with collaboration with nvidia for ray tracing and the cpus from amd and Intel as well but it would be very expensive. Being able to overclock the cpu, gpu with msi after burner with a desktop cpu while also overclocking the ram with xmp. Have the displays manufactured from lg and samsung. For example, the pi max portal highest end version is a handheld device that has a 4k 144 hz mini led display that runs android and supports 5g but the option to run full fledge windows pc games instead of game streaming but game streaming as option for those that want to game stream but support gaming natively from steam, epic games, gog games etc. I have the sony xperia 1 iv android phone with a 4k 120 hz oled display and I play bright memory, ark survival evolved for mobile since both games are pc ports on mobile and I'm still waiting for call of duty war zone to be available on mobile. Bright memory has rtx on pc but ark survival evolved does not support rtx even on the pc version. I'm hoping that very high fidelity visual gaming will be available in a handheld like I mentioned about the pi max portal 4k display.
Yeah and the last time Sony tried to compete with Nintendo on the handheld side, they got kicked badly. The DS sold double of what the PSP sold and the 3ds slaughtered the Vita. Sony is best left making home consoles. There is a reason why Microsoft backed away from the handheld market. They were looking to make one back during the PSP and DS days.
I legit agree with Microsoft needing to make an Xbox handheld that isn't just a cloud gaming device (but can cloud game). It would probably take over a good market share of the handheld space. The rest of the handheld market is far too niche, not enough support, and the steam deck will likely be the main squeeze for a long time coming for people who want to play pc games and do some cloud and retro gaming. Very few people comparatively want to be paying full budget pc price for handhelds, and likely already have good enough PCs and cloud gaming options already on hand (says guy with a switch, pc, xbox, ps4, and some retro handhelds)
I waited for the ROG ally and ended up just getting the Steam Deck. After using the switch i just cant deal with another flat handheld. Also if i spending this much money id like a flushed out and intuitive experience from the UI. Ive been going back and forth whether i made the right decision but im pretty confident ill be pleased.
i think i’m gonna do the same. always wanted a gaming pc but with less time to play due to college and the crazy cost barrier it’s just not worth it. also have a ps5 and a macbook so it would feel a little redundant lol. these two are my main contenders. i don’t really wanna be an early adopter to the ally though and steamOS is so flushed out now, with the option to dual boot onto windows WITH driver support from valve. the rog software seems like crap from what i’ve heard even on pcs so i don’t have much faith. and their customer support also sounds really bad. the only con i can think of is worse performance when docked on the steam deck vs the ally. that’s just my thinking, hoping to order the steam deck this month i hope my points gave u a little reassurance on ur decision :)
The handheld gaming industry is currently like the car industry. Steam deck is like Hyundai/ Kia. When One X is Tesla quality but expensive. The other brands are like Gm, Ford, etc trying to compete in a market that has a quality and affordable offering with efficient tech.
Windows has to compete with Linux somehow, quite sad honestly, the device is powerful yea... but it's poorly thought out, and the lack of inputs makes the ally a joke to me, I cant imagine playing even half my game library without trackpads... they just make mouse only games so much easier
As you mentioned Nintendo is in its own class. Whatever they invent is always good for gaming and technology. Hell i have a "Wiimote" Style smart TV remote that came with the TV and im sure most of you do too. And as Austin showed at the end we already have a good portable gaming cloud device. There are ways to stream pc games on your phone. If the steam deck was locally $400 AUD i'd pick one up and tinker with it but i'd put windows on there. The AyeNeo devices look nice compared to steam deck or anything else. I think they will be ok but the others....
Fvck yeah! Definitely grabbing an ally as I have an xg mobile already. I really really really hope they don't gatekeep the z1 extreme version here in canada like their other products.
If you play only controller supported games the ally is perfect for you... otherwise the battery life is worse and so are the inputs, which matter alot. You cant play mouse n keyboard games
I think aya needs to cool it a bit and just concentrate on one affordable model i wanted one but i know if i wait a couple of months they will be a better model
The 3rd party handhelds would have to create their own service like steam, or find a way to get some profits from the services that are supported on their devices. Like they get X% for allowing xbox cloud, or steam cloud. Or change their product type from generic handhelds to niche feature packed stuff. Otherwise, I don't have much motivation to not buy 1st party when its cheaper and runs the games better and easier
I definitely agree that it's about time for a brand new OS to be developed by _somebody_ that isn't just another Linux distro, or based on Windows or Apple's Unix-based OS. Like a brand new Unix-based would be fine I guess. But with the advancements of ARM chips, they really do deserve their own "built from the ground-up" OS that isn't associated with any of those other companies/brands. A big issue with a lot of them, is they are built _on top_ of previously existing OS architecture/code. Like Windows is really just 95/XP re-skinned and tweaked from then all the way to Windows 11 now. Linux distros are all built on the main three Debian, Red Hat or SUSE and are just reworkings of those, and even those are reworkings of the versions that came before. Same with Apple's Unix OS's. It's about time someone started over from absolute _scratch_ and developed something _actually_ new. I seriously doubt that will happen - at least not for a long time - perhaps only after another major architecture shift. But one can dream.
What would be the benefit in making something brand new though? Unless there is some feature that is just impossible to implement in the Unix-like or Windows kernels, I don't see the reason to reinvent the wheel
@@kyonblack7901 Well for one, you can code them to work more efficiently with the newer CPU architecture - there's a reason Windows always struggles with any kind of mobile-based version of their OS and their ARM side isn't that great either - and that reason _is_ that old platform it's built on top of. It's bulky, chock full of junk code and translation layers just to get anything to work. And that means creating 'forks' of the OS is incredibly difficult. It's also why they keep breaking things every time they update it or when they went from 10 to 11 half the stuff that _worked_ in 10 suddenly didn't in 11 despite essentially being _the same OS_ . You can also make them much smaller in size and use far less RAM if you start from scratch and throw out all the crap that has built up over the years that you really no longer need. And finally and really most importantly - competition. Really, aside from Apple there is zero competition for Microsoft. And that is _not_ a good thing. For one it locks people in to dealing with _just_ them, and that means they can dictate whatever they want and we just have to take it. Like the changes over the years to Windows to remove your ability to customize it in any meaningful way. Or the fact they took what used to be an open DOS platform, made their own (copied it) then _forced_ everyone to adopt it and kill off the open side which permanently stifled development. Or Apple's control over what software/apps are even allowed onto their platform, and their anti-repair/upgrade attitude. Linux would count if it could ever get higher than a few percentage points of market share - but its biggest advantage is also its biggest weakness on that front and that is _too many forks_ and not enough focus and therefore development on one single distro. And the average consumer doesn't want to have to deal with all that, they want to purchase one thing and it just works. Most people these days don't want to mess around in command lines or have to use emulators or translation software just to get a handful of games to work. It's getting better on that front but it's just nowhere near there yet. And it's been that way for literally decades. And honestly, any OS that allows the world to get away from the .exe file format - and therefore Microsofts ownership of that entire space, is a _great_ thing.
I expect Microsoft and Sony to have their own Xbox Handheld and PlayStation Handheld next year. I'm waiting for when Handhelds can play Cyberpunk 2077 at native 1080p highest detail 120fps with Ray tracing, all day. We are not there but not too far off.
The issue is it really depends on early adopters and sales. You could get the ROG and they decide to give up because Steam is outselling them. Then you're stick without much, if any support.
The ally is gonna fail in my opinion, it's do as good as the Aya neo, the deck is just better for inputs a lone, isn't a game I can't play, while the ally will cut you library down quite a bit to controller only
whatever comes next, it has to be as affordable as the steamdeck if you want wide adoption of hte device. It also needs to be AVAILABLE without pre-ordering, much like the PSP was back in the day. Plain and simple.
theres too many handhelds that nobody is buying exsept the switch yes that also includes steamdeck a sucsess for steam sure but barely 2 million units is tiny

id love to see a video on how the proliferation of handhelds affects the next interaction of the switch
The handheld bubble is going to burst sooner rather than later.
Omg he said it, I've been talking about how Sony should push more into pc gaming, more of a store and not an os, but it adds to what I've been thinking and wanting forever now
When clamshells with oled?
Never .
Because Nintendo copyrighted the clamshell design
The more accurate statement is "I don't have enough cash to buy all the handhelds" 😁😂💯
See I want to buy a handheld but I don't know what to get Asus or steam Deck.
does the asus rog ally physically come out on the 11th at local bestbuys or is it just the official pre-order release that goes on sale?
pre-order release, i believe the shipment should be in June.
It's gonna be hot garbage, enjoy only playing controller supported games...
@@JDabz96 and your point is?
Where is that cactus shirt from ?
I feel like despite all this, eventually people will just default to the established brands. Sony, Nintendo, Valve and MS are the only companies that can subsidize their products enough to make their handhelds attractive price wise. Everyone else is just flooding into a tiny niche market of $700-$1500 handheld PC's. Even if each brand has a gaming handheld, I feel Sony, MS and Valve would be all very similar to each other with Nintendo being the only one with enough unique software to be attractive.
I agree 100% valve is super trusted and helpful, there customer service alone is way better than rog
How many of these new handhelds are really that different in terms of games and hardware features, other than price of course.
The best handheld overall is definitely the steam deck, anyone saying differently doesn't know shite about pc's
@@JDabz96 that's just wrong though. It's only better at being cheap. If you're someone who has more money than what to do with it (plenty of PC gamers it seems) there are objectively better options.
@@elirantuil5003 this device restricts you to controller only games on the go.... the input are horrendous, navigating windows with a joystick Is batshit.... and it's gonna have worse battery life than the deck unless you make the settings similar to the steam decks.... you people have smooth brains. This is just windows throwing money to compete with Linux, since Linux is a superior OS... they don't want to lose there monopoly... all the fucking bots in the chat
The ally is a really tempting device for this price. It feels like the device the switch 2 should ve been. Would be interesting to see steam os running on the Asus competitor. ☮️
The inputs alone make it a trash device... and if people can't figure out why then they should stuck with there consoles
The ayn odin is basically a perfect device. Wouldn't mind if it had a slightly more powerful processor, but aside from that, it's perfect.
Swap in a Snapdragon 870 (same processor as the Poco F3 and F4) and we're golden.
Maximum performance with minimal throttling.
I say the same about the steam deck, because of the power and inputs there isn't a game you can't play on it
Competition and choice are good but it's all so overwhelming sometimes. It feels like there's a new one of these things being announced every other month. Computer companies have plenty of laptops and desktops available, but considering what almost everyone uses a handheld PC for (Steam and emulation), the range of hardware for pc and retro specific stuff is needlessly crowded.
That first “PSP” render was just the backbone PlayStation edition 😂
Bring back the OG handheld, fellas you know what to do
I mean, the reviews clearly depict a night and day difference with integrated RDNA 3, a number of systems are now running the mobile 7000 series and it’s a significant bump in performance, not to mention the newer generation Zen Cores…
It don't mean shit when navigating windows and inputs are gonna be horrendous on the ally, I play way more than controller only games... people are to simple minded, even the battery life is worse on the ally
Coming from their review of the Ally…feel like a time traveler!
I'd rather see more handhelds than less handhelds...
It's actually raining outside while I watch this lol
No love for the PlayDate? It's a legitimate console, I swear.
Naaah especially since the 90s-2000s, everyone wanted to be gameboy and ds, it ranges from psp success, which is not gba or ds success, to gizmondo's widescreen variant success, which was never released due to their company going caput.
Too many handhelds?! And I cant even get my hand held ONCE?!
Stay thirsty, my simp kings...
Kenzie to the rescue: 69 Terrafarts per Megashit.
Too many maybe but one is missing: a new Playstation Handheld (that would be a dream of mine and the only handheld id need, still love my Vita)
Both next gen consoles failed to meet expectations. Switch and Steam Deck it is
Back when the Microsoft Xbox game pass PC app and the Microsoft app store was heavily advertised for Windows 10, 6 years ago.
I'd be down for the Ally if it runs Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games (KH3) and Blizzard (OW)
It does tho, it's a windows pc packed into a handheld, it will be able to run everything.
It does
What we need is a portable device that can allow users to buy game cards.
Your living in a crazy fantasy.... enjoy what's out there now, it will definitely blow your little mind
Damn they were so wrong about the Q Lite. The PlayStation Portal really IS a remote play only device
You forget the OG, the WinGPD , they are also making a more powerful version too.
The thing about the steam deck is the controller works fully and flawlessly with steam input.
The handheld gaming industry is currently like the car industry. Steam deck is like Hyundai/ Kia. When One X is Tesla quality but expensive. The other brands are like Gm, Ford, etc trying to compete in a market that has a quality and affordable offering with efficient tech.
Now we know, the Q Lite does SFA except remote play (and maybe cloud gaming in the future)..good work Sony.
Now I just want Oreos
Bring back the Nokia taco
All brands will kneel
I think Microsoft is helping bring the Rog Ally. The Person that is the Head of Xbox hardware is on the showcase panel.
Windows has to compete with Linux somehow, quite sad honestly, the device is powerful yea... but it's poorly thought out, and the lack of inputs makes the ally a joke to me, I cant imagine playing even half my game library without trackpads... they just make mouse only games so much easier
@@JDabz96 I don’t play any games that would need them so I’m fine without them. I grew up on consoles or using controllers on pc.
🤯WTF❗🤯 HES DRINKING A RED BULL AND NOT ANY BOSS COFFEE THIS TIME 🤯❗
lol. Watching this now when he said. There is no way this psp is going to be remote play only
"for Sony to compete with MS"????
Dude it's the other way round.😂
What's the hidden meaning behind that Red Bull? There are too many energy drinks, but you only need one?
The 3rd party handhelds would have to create their own service like steam, or find a way to get some profits from the services that are supported on their devices. Like they get X% for allowing xbox cloud, or steam cloud. Or change their product type from generic handhelds to niche feature packed stuff. Otherwise, I don't have much motivation to not buy 1st party when its cheaper and runs the games better and easier
Abxylute kickstarter is coming to an end and while it's similar to the GCloud it'd only 199.
So many that I can't keep up.
For me, i dont care about tripple AAA pc games, but retro emulation dam thats amazing! Playing gamecube and ps2 is pure joy 🤓
It's pretty much obvious that Microsoft has an interest in the mobile console space with the announcement of optimizing windows for handhelds
The issue is it really depends on early adopters and sales. You could get the ROG and they decide to give up because Steam is outselling them. Then you're stick without much, if any support.
The ally is gonna fail in my opinion, it's do as good as the Aya neo, the deck is just better for inputs a lone, isn't a game I can't play, while the ally will cut you library down quite a bit to controller only
So ayaneo needs to start making exclusive games lol
Or their own software, yes.
Someone tell Matt PonyOS already exists... it’s called FreeBSD.
I have never seen more people yelling than steam deck owners speaking about competition
wait til amazon and apple also join the handheld market
The Pony OS is hilarious
anbernic puts out a new model every other week
LINUX TYRANNY 😂😂😂
Qyo they must have been so disappointed when the portal came out
whatever comes next, it has to be as affordable as the steamdeck if you want wide adoption of hte device. It also needs to be AVAILABLE without pre-ordering, much like the PSP was back in the day. Plain and simple.
PONY OS LET’S GO
theres too many handhelds that nobody is buying exsept the switch yes that also includes steamdeck a sucsess for steam sure but barely 2 million units is tiny
Bring back the PSP Go I miss that little slidey screen!
