How to Unload trailer with winch - (DIY) Do it yourself dump trailer

  • Here is a quick video I made showing how to unload your trailer with a winch/ do it yourself dump trailer. I mounted a 2000lb manual winch to the tongue of my trailer to unload it using ropes, pulleys and a winch. It has a 2:1 mechanical advantage pulley system so it is easier on the winch but just takes a bit more rope and time to unload. Check out some of my other videos on tree removal. necessity is the mother of all invention. Way better than unloading each branch by hand. If you end up eventually going to an electric winch don't get a harbor freight. Milemarker makes really good winches, $300 for an 8k winch when I got mine 5 years or so back, and it's paid for itself 100 times over. I've drug over 300 vehicles onto my trailer with it, parbuckled countless logs, used it behind my nissan for implements every year--drag snow plow, drag box blade, skidding logs and even pulling my big diesel up the hill more than a few times when chains on all 4 tires weren't enough in the snow. Thanks for the video.

    I copied this for my trailer, works awesome! I use a worm gear winch with super low gearing, you can drive with a cordless drill, got the biggest drill available, and now I can dump the whole thing without breaking a sweat. Great for a little tree service.

    Nice but a bit labor intensive and time consuming. Get a screw in ground anchor then take the rope that runs under the brush attach the end to the ground anchor and drive away just don’t forget to stop once the brush is off to retrieve the rope and anchor. Works for me no winching and no effort required.

    I designed & built an unloader of an old long bed, step side Chevy pickup, back about 40 years ago, that you may want to try ..I put a piece of 3" channel on top of the side rails of the bed, with the trough facing up. Then I put a 1" round bar thru two solid steel wheels that would just fit inside the channel. Then I positioned a piece of 1/4" x 2" flat bar above it and welded short pieces of the 1/4" x 2" from the outboard side of the channel to the top piece. I attached a roller, made out of 3" pipe to each side of thw back end of the bed. Then I heated up some belting,(that I found out behind a grocery store, where they had renewed their grocery line belts), and bolted it around the shaft with the wheels. And then I put a sheet of plywood below the bed above the axle. I had 2 take up reels for cable, both on the same drive and then a compound crank. You pulled the whole shebang up to the front and tied it there. You dropped roofing into the bed, (onto the grocery belting), and closed the hinge- raised tailgate. When you got to the dump, you dropped your tailgate and cranked your load right out on the ground. The belt wrapped right around the back pipe and laid on the top of the plywood under the bed. Then 2 of you pulled it back up. Saved a lot of work. I sold it to a fellow that later patented it. I was young & didn't know what I had. I could have been rich, now.

    • @jlstree
      @jlstree  6 років тому

      Lee Williams that is awesome! I wish you had a photo of that system. Sounds super interesting and efficient and I don't think I would have the ability to come up with something like that without seeing it first.

    • @general5104
      @general5104 6 років тому

      JL's Tree Service like I said, I built that about 40 years ago and then sold the truck Tomas fellow that patented the system. It was kind of like the main computer tech story...the head dog didn't invent Windows!!!...the guy that invented a different type of computer, did. He threw it in the garbage & the other dude pulled it out & patented it. I was young and didn't understand things. I designed & built prototypes for equipment for the railroad industry for over 36 years. Most of my prototypes were produced & given a stock and item number and made available for order and replacement over the entire system of an unnamed USA railroad so...trust me...my early designs were potent! You know the wobble end on ratchets and extention s...the dear Lordvabive gave me that when I was 14 years old, when I was changing my Mother's sparkplugs & COULDNT get around an air conditioner bracket. I made a whole set of them that we used readily. It was years down the road before someone else came up with it and patented it. ID be rich if I understood the patent process!

    Hello I like your setup. I am trying to do the same but with a sled in the trailer to pull out all the debris. What are the pulleys brand and max weight. I can't find these in home depot. Also can I attach my steal cable to the rope to pull?

    • @jlstree
      @jlstree  5 років тому

      Mr. E-Man M hey there I don’t see a problem with attaching a steel cable to the rope you would be able to do it with a termination knot in the rope to the hook on the cable. The pulleys are all climbing/rigging pulleys that I use are for tree work so they are super strong and can definitely handle doing it. Check out Treestuff.com for them, they are the cmi pulleys that are black in colour, they will run you about 50$ usd for each one but well worth it for all of the uses they offer. Hope this helps. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions

  • @aaroninks
    @aaroninks 7 років тому +1

    Where we unload they have 1000lbs concrete block for anchor points. Before loading the trailer we drop a 2" strap in belly with end loops hanging over sides of trailer. Pull into dump area throw rope around concrete block and then secure rope with hook end to straps. Jump in pickup and roll forward. Literally takes 30 seconds start to finish.

    I like the system I have been battling whether to buy a dump trailer or not and I think this just changed my mind. Did you fabricate up the mounting bracket for the winch or is that a repurposed bracket for something else?

    • @jlstree
      @jlstree  9 років тому

      Hey Jared, sorry for the delayed response. I have been going crazy with tree calls. As for the trailer winch setup, I designed the mounting bracket. Basically just welded some braces to the tongue of the trailer and a vertical 2inch square tubing piece of steel with a flat plate welded to that for the winch to mount. I also used climbing rope, rated rigging pulleys and make sure you use either "steel mallions" or "steel carabiners" because with the 2:1 setup the winch generates a lot of force. I bent about 4 aluminum carabiners on this setup before I switched to steel carabiners. Hope this helps.

      To be honest, it was not that tough to crank, hence the mechanical advantage setup. A 12v battery powered winch was too much money at the time. We now have two dump trucks and a chipper so this idea is long gone to me now. Pretty crazy what some free time and creativity will let you come up with, I was really surprised at how well it worked.
