Wow! I can't believe that on my first Google search I was able to reach such informative information. I actually searched for the removal of window tint and came to your video. My 2007 VW Bug rear window tint was in dreadful need of removal and your video helped immensely ! I hope it removes as easily as yours did. As a 67 year old female, my arm strength isn't what it used to be. So I kept watching, low and behold, your next video touched on another problem I was facing, the sticky junk on the steering wheel! Yep, have the same problem. I've tried getting it off in the past without any luck, but AGAIN, your information was invaluable. I'm going right out and start trying your suggestions. Thank you so much!

Same here! Found lots of other videos demonstrating the shiny black trash bag over the rear window tint removal trick. Gonna try that method on the rear window of my late husband's 2014 Holden.
After he passed, I found a brand new Dr. Dre boom box still packed in the original box that he never used. I took it out and it sounds amazing! But the rubber coating on top of it is nasty sticky from being stored in the garage for way too long. The clear plastic bag the factory packed it in baked it like a chicken a chicken in an oven bag. such a shame. I thought I was going to have to throw it away.
Boys and their toys...so much left behind that I hate to just toss away. Now there is some hope

Same sticky thing happened to my 94 Mustang airbag cover. Thought alot about what to use and with my wife's suggestion, I used foaming hand sanitizer. Its water based and its active ingredient is Ethyl Alcohol. Wiped off with a t shirt. Took that sticky stuff right off. Worked like a charm with almost no scrubbing and didn't dull the black. Don't know what would happen if yours is a color other than black.

I had the same problem on my C5. I used Isopropyl Alcohol (97%) with an old sock and clean rag. Add a dab of alcohol to the sock, wipe around the air bag cover. Shift to a clean part of the rag as you remove the sticky stuff. Wipe as needed with the clean rag. Once cleaned, I covered it with vinyl / leather treatment to make it shine like new. I tried other cleaners and Goo Gone, but they did not disolve the goo as well as the alcohol. The alcohol treatment was a lot faster removing the goo.

While it's a very common issue, not everybody has it. Might be related to how the car is stored. While my car lives in the garage now, I think the PO had it outside. I agree, I think the decal adds a little color to the interior. Seems to be holding up well too.

I have the same problem on my 2005 GMC Sierra. I tried Gunk’s engine degreaser without diluting it, and it did not work at all. It did not even get any black marks on the old white T-shirt I applied it with. I had gotten some of the sticky black stuff on my fingers in the process. So I tried washing it off with some dawn dishwashing liquid. That did not take the stuff off my fingers. So I tried a little bit of rubbing alcohol and it took it right off my fingers. So I tried the out dated, 07/1999, rubbing alcohol on the steering wheel. It took the sticky stuff off rather easily. I’m going to stop at this point to see if it gets sticky again.

Saw another solution with equal parts water and baking soda and gave it a go in my 03 z06 - 2 shop rags and 10 minutes later it came out cleaner than ever! Cheap and easy - most importantly pretty harmless / non-caustic.

Here’s what worked for me on 2003 tj Sahara, thanks to my wife’s tip. I mixed 1 part baking soda, 1 part white vinegar, 3 parts water and let sit on the area for 5 minutes, repeated, then began rubbing with a toothbrush. The black goo loosened and could be wiped off with a shop towel. I repeated the process for 45 minutes until all the black goo was gone, then cleaned a few times with toothbrush and Dawn dish detergent. It worked, leaving the cleaned area a dry non tacky gray. Now I'm wondering if I should use a protectant/sealer.

This sticky goo is like tar on the south texas beach. We use ronsonol (lighter fluid for zippo lighters)to get the tar off our feet and guess what....it works on these sticky steering wheels too. Just remember its flammable but evaporates relatively quick.

I followed the tip from C&S Corvettes video in which he recommends using lemon vinegar. I tried it - no scrubbing. Just sprayed it on and let sit for a few minutes - wipe off with micro fiber towel.
I did this 3 times and it came out great, with minimal fuss. Oh yeah - cost under $2 for a 2 qt. bottle at grocery store.

Pro floor installers use sharpie's to mark up their new flooring for cuts or whatever. They dont worry about not getting it off. What they use is one simple ingredient, Denatured Alcohol. I easily removed what was left of that sticky residue on my new to me 2001 Corvette. Then applied some plastic and rubber dressing I use on my Spyder, Then applied a high end polish called The Last Coat. F11 would have worked also. It came out looking bran spankin new!

Your taking off the original factory leather protection. The wheel itself is the same thing. Turns to muck after years in the heat. That’s why your left with that naked matte finish.

Sticky wheel centers are becoming a common problem across the entire car brand/ model spectrum. Beneath the vinyl cover is usually a hard plastic form or frame, to which the thin vinyl is bonded to with some sort of adhesive. Over time, age, heat, and possibly cleaning agents begin to break down the vinyl fabric, allowing the adhesive to ooze through. It's not going to go away. Alcohol, vinegar, baking soda, dish soap, industrial cleaners... none of them will repair the outer cover once it starts to disintegrate. Here is a relatively easy and sure way to solve this problem.
Go to Walmart and buy a can of Plasti-Dip in spray can form. ( about $7 ) It comes in various colors. My wheel is black so I bought Matte black. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the vehicle. VERY IMPORTANT when playing with a potential bomb. Wait 5 minutes for any capacitors in the airbag controller to dissipate their charge. Unscrew the wheel center by removing the screws on the back side of the wheel. If there is a row of switches in the front of the wheel, remove the screws for those also and the switch module, which should unplug. Carefully pry the center module away from the wheel and unplug the airbag.
Now you can place the module on a piece of cardboard or whatever and ready it for spray painting. Clean the vinyl surface with lint-free paper towels soaked with alcohol. This will remove lint and windblown dirt and crawly things from the surface. It will still be very sticky, but not to worry. The rubber based Plasti-Dip will adhere very well to it. Follow the directions on the can. 3 or 4 coats is recommended, with a min. of 1/2 hour between coats. The product sprays on easily with no runs or sags. It seems to dry nicely. I gave mine a full day to be sure it fully cured. Putting it all back together, the center looks brand new and matches perfectly. Best of all, absolutely no stickiness to contend with.

Should the protectant be for some specific material like leather or vinyl, or should you avoid any certain type of protectant?

    • @ScrufsGarage
      @ScrufsGarage  4 роки тому +1

Typically any type of interior protectant will work on multiple materials. I recently used this from Autogeek... it dries to a non-greasy matte-finish and it has a UV protectant in it which is nice. www.autogeek.net/dp380.html#

Yea the sticky steering wheel is so annoying. Don't know why I waited so long to fix it, haha. I like the emblem but it's a pain to get it in place and lay smooth. Plan to be very patient with a pair of tweezers. I've only had the emblem on less than 2 months, but so far it's doing good. No lifting, etc. I plan to be very gentle with it when I clean the interior in the future. Don't be rough on it. Good luck with yours and congrats on the new Vette!!

I've recently started using "Detailing Products Interior Surface Protectant." It has a UV protectant in it which is really nice, and it dries to a nice matte finish, instead of glossy like armor-all. So you might give that a try. www.autogeek.net/dp380.html#
