    While the Judge Dredd movie from 1995 may have gone down in movie history as one of the most spectacular bombs of the last few decades, the source material was rich enough and the fans loud enough that another movie based on the universe was made.. Dredd. They aimed to stick a lot closer to the source material this time around, but there was a problem with this plan. Namely, the studios weren't willing to blow nearly as high a budget on another movie based on the Judge Dredd comics, so fantastical technology, hovercraft and robots went right out the window, as well as most of the other fantastic designs.

    I think that while the Stallone film got the visual style of the comics right, it was still a typical 90s action flick. This film properly captured the comics' tone which can be considered more important; it's not about looking right, rather it's about feeling right.

      Stallone know's his audience, and he know's what money is. That being said his version took some turns for the worse (constant helmet removal, romantic elements, silly CGI). The overall branding of Stallone movies can damage them as well, a more muted ad campaign with less romance would have been more pleasing to hardcore fans.

      Actually was important to the right balance between the look in the overall story. To get the overall feel just right. Only problem the first one had was they were banking on Stallone's household name. while knowing full well no one knew about the comic series until the movie. And it turned into a generic campy sci-fi Action Movie. While this one bombed because they concentrated too much on thread again the character this time instead of the actor. Where there was barely anything sci-fi about it as a result. What's the end result being a very generic buddy cop movie within a dystopian future with a little tiny bit of Sci-Fi in it.

    You know, the presence of those four Judges on the take do a lot to explain why Dredd never got called to Peacetree earlier. They likely share jurisdiction for that area, otherwise they couldn't cover for MaMa, and went out of their way to take all the calls for that block while Dredd took more active crimes rather than investigations.

      @LupineShadowOmega Рік тому +3

      Plus Dredd mentioned earlier in the film that they only had the manpower to deal with 6% or so of the calls they received. MegaCity One is massive and it seems pretty likely that jurisdiction was variable because of how often they'd need to move Judges around or replace lost Judges.

    I think the pass/fail criteria that Dredd used for her was his own, not rules set up by their authorities. Ultimately, he determines if she passes or not and so he is just laying out the guidelines for what he feels is acceptable behavior from her. That is why in the end, when Dredd's superior asks if she is a pass or a fail, she doesn't ask for any clarification as to why he made the decision. It wasn't necessary because the decision was his to make based on how he rated her performance by his own standards.

    If I may, I feel the reason Dredd passes Anderson is because unlike the 4 Judges who had power and were corrupted by temptation, Anderson has the temptation to drop the good guy act and stop helping Dredd in taking down the Ma-Ma clan. But she p much said "Screw that. I said I was gonna help make Mega City One a better place and I'm doing that, Judge or not." The other Judges fell into the temptation of money.
    In essence, after seeing the corruption of 4 Judges, he knew that someone like Anderson, despite not being as technically proficient on the field yet, deserved the title of Judge more than those 4 as she never surrendered her integrity throughout the film.

And this was more of a parody of angry joe’s review of the dredd film in the beginning.

    I actually thought the regular "modern day" look of most of the film worked to its benefit - it really added a nice contrast to the high tech equipment that the judges use, which made the wholly unrealistic aspect of two "future super-cops" vs. thousands of gang members seem more acceptable, because the gang is using archaic 21st century guns (possibly modified though) vs. the Judges' super-versatile hand-guns/cannons.
    But then, I never collected the comics and only had a cursory understanding of them...

    • @CaptainAmercia

      The 2000AD city had a much more 1950s retrofuturism look to it like Metropolis or New New York to it which I personally could see down well in a live action movie all you'd need to do is add a textured and dirty look to it like Tim Burtons Gotham. As a fan of the comics I was disappointed with the city just looked like Cape Town with tower blocks instead of Mega City One but I loved the tower block stuff i think it was mostly the budget it limited them from really going all out so they decided to just stay with a modern look.

      A flamethrower is an incendiary weapon...
      Thermite is also an incendiary weapon.
      Tracer rounds are also incendiary since they a a coating of red phosphorus on them and the friction of the air rushing around the bullet causes the phosphorus to ignite thud letting you see the round ...
      Dragons breath is only one type of incendiary weapon..

    in the comics the unemployment rate is explained by automation . That also explains the high crime rate . People are bored and have nothing to do so enrolling either in city def units or juve gangs is something pretty normal . This leads to the various blocs having frequent brawls between their gangs and city def units etc . There are jobs that are utterly demeaning but people flock by the tens of thousands to get , foot stool , shop manikin and so on . In some cases there are riots when a job opens up . There are also thousands of channels to broadcast endless tv shows and reality tv plus bizzare games were the fatties ( people enhanced to eat up to one ton and live to tell the tale ) engage in eating contests or gladiatorial contests ( one touching story has a fatie father breaking the law to get money and enter the contests ring ) .

    Dredd turns 10 today!!!
    Sadly it bombed at the box office being overshadowed by The Raid: Redemption but received better reviews and gained a cult status over time
    It was far better than the Stallone version which had so many action cliches and over-the-top-performances
    Karl Urban plays a more restrained version of Judge Dredd; he has the belief that harsh sentences and swift executions are not only morally defensible, but imperative for the shaky stability
    He depicts a dark and disturbing anti-hero presenting a faceless critique of American law enforcement with enough of a dichotomy
    Plus the filmmakers make this comic book world of Mega-City One believable with a smaller scale plot
    A crime-infested city run by drugs and guns
    Amazing bloody violence and stylish action
    Love Lena Headey as the villain Ma-Ma and this was my first introduction to Olivia Thirlby
    Poor marketing may have hurt the movies theatrical run as well as being too familiar with the 1995 version
    Good is news that Karl Urban is open to making a sequel and the first film didn't have to concern itself with a larger mythology

    Urban don't need to remove his helmet, since that Dredd-pout is recognizable enough. :p
    Also Decker you really miss a lot of notable details, such as the Judges only have enough solid manpower to cover about.... if I recall correctly it's around 14% of all reported crimes each day. They cannot catch up with it... they can merely respond to what feels like the most notable of crimes.
    And then there's the crimes that interfer with an active judge to take him away from a potential other crime reported.

    • @CaptainAmercia
      @CaptainAmercia 3 роки тому

      The tone down was mostly because of budgets. I personally prefer the CyberPunk mixed with retro futuristic look Mega City one has it just looked more unique. The look of the first movie could be explained as a earlier version of Mega City One Dredd himself seems to be unknown by the gangs unlike the comic and we get to see the first mutant Judge in this movie in the comics there’s a whole division of mutant Judges so this movie seems to be set early on sequels or shows would’ve developed the city to a more faithful comic book look where we see an older Dredd. I would also love to see the more weird side of the 2000AD universe in a sequel.

    I always assumed the low employment rate in the movie was due to crime being so rampant, essentially meaning that the majority of people ARE employed, but as or by criminals.
    So you would have people who work as muscle for the crime groups, like Mama's. Or those who are essentially forced into the labour of producing FOR the crime groups, like the manufacturers of Slowmo as shown in the movie.
    This would explain why crime is such a big issue, it probably makes up for the largest sector in employment, even though it's technically illegitimate.

    • @vksasdgaming9472
      @vksasdgaming9472 5 місяців тому

      That criminal groups being biggest employer might apply in Peach Trees which was very much lawless slum. Movie does not show less derelict blocks, which might have less serious crimes happening. Boredom and large scale cabin fever does create demand for stuff like Slomo and harsh work also gives lots of opportunities for judges to become corrupt. Especially when Anderson mentions that she grew up in similar block and that implies judges are not as rigorously conditioned as they are in comic. Joe Dredd started his training at biological age of five and it takes 15 years to graduate from very harsh training.
