We were trying to scalp tickets outside the stadium in the ice cold Chicago winter. The MTB bus was there, and they invited both me and my sister on the bus, great guys, real gentlemen. We were short a ticket so they let my sister sit just off the stage to view the show.... True story.
Toy's heart was broken when Tommy left him. They started playing together, Toy was 9, Tommy 7 and that came in an interview from Tommy himself. Tommy was the heart of that band. I won't leave an opinion of what is MTB today.
Tommy Caldwell drove this band like a Mack truck to make it what it was. It was the like a very well tuned 427. Smokin the tires. Seen them at mile high Stadium. As headliners in 76. 17 years old they were magic. !!

Damn I miss the 70’s! I literally burned up Marshall Tucker Band 8 track tapes! Both the Caldwell brothers played with their thumbs instead of picks, it was amazing the sound Toy could squeeze out of that Les Paul!
Funny you mention how they both played using their thumbs, but especially Tommy. I watched an interview recently where Geddy Lee from RUSH talks about why thumb rests were originally placed at the bottom half of the pickguard, and not at the top above the E stringm which woukd seem like the more logical place for one... Hd said in the early days of bass guitar, bass players would commonly play using a style that incorporated the use of their thumb, rather thsn their fingers. They would then grab onto the thumb rest using their index, middle, and ring fingers for stability and leverage. Bridge systems were even equipped with foam pads that could be raised to mute each string, and helped facilitate that style of bass guitar playing, which I believe he said originated from the south consistent with tyat sort of rockabilly and country "twang" style... Perhaps, it's that exact style of playing is where Tommy's roots lie? It's an interesting theory and does make sense, anyways
Aah 8-Tracks. The 70's. I had a MTB 8-Track die in the car I remember. Excessive heat was not good in the car for those tapes in the Summer. I think that one was respliced a few times. Remember you could do that to them? Well, the player ate the tape & I couldn't rescue it. I kept pulling strand after strand out. The window was half down & the wind just blew the 8-Track right out of my hand sending it down the road bouncing still with tape unraveling until the end. Such an inglorious ending for such a fine tape.

One of my favorite songs, love the sax and fiddle. Toy Caldwell died young. RIP.
Had the privilege of meeting Toy and George as they were walking towards the stage one night and I hollered “George McCorkle the fastest rhythm guitar player alive!!” Stopped’m dead in their tracks and Toy said “he listens George” then he said “git on in here boy!” Thought I’d died and gone to heaven…this led to backstage passes of course, meeting the band, Tommy was like an instant friend and he grabbed Joe McConnell(road Mgr.) and had me put on the permanent guest list. “Where ever we play all you have to do is go to the back door give’m your name and what you need and you’re in Tommy told me…On stage there were 7 different sounds coming from each band member and those sounds met right slap in the middle of the stage! Saw Tucker at many venues and got to meet all the southern rockers…1974-1981 were some good years and great music…one of the best nights was NYE ‘76 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati…The Outlaws….Charlie Daniels Band….and…. The Marshall Tucker Band!
I love all southern rock. M.T.B LYNARD SKYNYRD ARE MY FAVORITES. ALMOND BROTHERS

Those Caldwell boys just kill'n it. Poor Doug Grey with that wimpy tambourine. LOL. Bring'n a slingshot to a gun fight.
The best concert I ever attended was The Marshall Tucker Band February 16, 1974 at the Ocala Jai-Alai Fronton. I was 19 years old. I still have the ticket stub.
