    We were trying to scalp tickets outside the stadium in the ice cold Chicago winter. The MTB bus was there, and they invited both me and my sister on the bus, great guys, real gentlemen. We were short a ticket so they let my sister sit just off the stage to view the show.... True story.

    Damn I miss the 70’s! I literally burned up Marshall Tucker Band 8 track tapes! Both the Caldwell brothers played with their thumbs instead of picks, it was amazing the sound Toy could squeeze out of that Les Paul!

    • @jackmomma7481
      @jackmomma7481 4 роки тому +7

      Funny you mention how they both played using their thumbs, but especially Tommy. I watched an interview recently where Geddy Lee from RUSH talks about why thumb rests were originally placed at the bottom half of the pickguard, and not at the top above the E stringm which woukd seem like the more logical place for one...
      Hd said in the early days of bass guitar, bass players would commonly play using a style that incorporated the use of their thumb, rather thsn their fingers. They would then grab onto the thumb rest using their index, middle, and ring fingers for stability and leverage. Bridge systems were even equipped with foam pads that could be raised to mute each string, and helped facilitate that style of bass guitar playing, which I believe he said originated from the south consistent with tyat sort of rockabilly and country "twang" style...
      Perhaps, it's that exact style of playing is where Tommy's roots lie? It's an interesting theory and does make sense, anyways

      Aah 8-Tracks. The 70's. I had a MTB 8-Track die in the car I remember. Excessive heat was not good in the car for those tapes in the Summer. I think that one was respliced a few times. Remember you could do that to them?
      Well, the player ate the tape & I couldn't rescue it. I kept pulling strand after strand out. The window was half down & the wind just blew the 8-Track right out of my hand sending it down the road bouncing still with tape unraveling until the end. Such an inglorious ending for such a fine tape.

    HONEY TUCKER ROSES: lady fan of Marshall Tucker Band. Note: These guys loved their wives, NO GROUPIES!!!! Lady fans were respected as we respected the band- members. Here is some great interviews: Toy Caldwell dkmccurry & Tommy Caldwell dkmccurry . These interviews show the Caldwells as they really were. I LOVE MTB!!! In this song '24 Hours at a Time", They gave it all they had. Perfection!!!! My favorite. I was raised about 30 miles from where they grew up. Toy Caldwell was not the usual lead singer: Doug Gray was but Toy Caldwell sang lead on this one. His brother, Tommy was the bassist. ( He passed away in 1980 in auto wreck, a week after their youngest brother lost his life in a similar accident.)He was lead guitarist and wrote most of their music. Toy Caldwell was a Marine on the front lines; awarded a purple heart and was a war her, carrying out another Marine for a few miles through enemy zones. He passed away in 1993. His buddy, Charlie Daniels 0f Charlie Daniels Band and Marshall Tucker Band performed frequently together. Love shout -out to MTB Band !!!! I knew Toy and he was for real.

      @@davidholton9667 I'm from upper South Carolina near Spartanburg where the guys from MTB grew up. When Toy was off the road, he'd come to a place my friends and I frequented listening to a band Variations. Toy was friends with bassist and lead singer/ guitarist. The bass player Tony Heatherly later joined the TCB. Toy was down- to- earth, genuine person. Went to see MTB play a couple concerts. They were tight, Toy was fast, and he could make that Gibson sing. I know he played a different kind of Gibson later on but when I think of him, it's with that tobacco sunburst Les Paul. The Charlie/ Toy together at 4:25 in stratosphere. Tommy always watching his big brother, sweat pouring off him. And the sounds from that bass at 4:45 and legs pumping to rhythm at 5:56. Good golly, miss molly. Makes this little ole' lady go nuts. Charlies wore out the fiddle bowstrings. This song a fav of mine. Yes, they were that good. I enjoy talking about those days. No hard rock for me, Southern Rock mostly MTB but CDB, LSB, a small amt. blues SRV as I grew older. I enjoyed sharing with you. They gave it all they had!!! God Bless.

    Had the privilege of meeting Toy and George as they were walking towards the stage one night and I hollered “George McCorkle the fastest rhythm guitar player alive!!” Stopped’m dead in their tracks and Toy said “he listens George” then he said “git on in here boy!” Thought I’d died and gone to heaven…this led to backstage passes of course, meeting the band, Tommy was like an instant friend and he grabbed Joe McConnell(road Mgr.) and had me put on the permanent guest list. “Where ever we play all you have to do is go to the back door give’m your name and what you need and you’re in Tommy told me…On stage there were 7 different sounds coming from each band member and those sounds met right slap in the middle of the stage! Saw Tucker at many venues and got to meet all the southern rockers…1974-1981 were some good years and great music…one of the best nights was NYE ‘76 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati…The Outlaws….Charlie Daniels Band….and…. The Marshall Tucker Band!
