To hell with music hall of fames. We know that this was one of the greatest bands to ever take to a stage or recording studio. That’s good enough for me.
I'm still a fan, been in love with this band ever since the golden age of classic rock in the 70s, never went to a concert but thank the rock gods they were on the radio, what a treat to hear some live cuts from their golden times.
Does anyone remember TOY FACTORY ? THEY USED TO PLAY ON UNION STREET IN SPARTANBURG,SC before they became THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND. They set up in the parking lot. They were getting GREAT then . Thank GOD 4 them all !!!
Back in the day, when you picked through albums in a crate, the Marshall Tucker Band came out onto the turntable a whole lotta times. Got 'em all and wore 'em out. Love this old footage...thanks.
was at this concert on the front row--- why i lost 20% of our hearing--- dam, they were killer-listen to them on a regular basis--cannot beleive they are both gone these last 30+ yrs

Nobody like them. Miss them so much. Oh those long jams, the vocals, fiddle, flute, the riffs, the sax...nuff said 💙 cept wish they were still here making sweet music
Fabulous tunes. Saw these guys 7 times live. Outstanding band with an energy that got into you and made you feel good. Flat out down to the core values told in the wrapper of wonderful music.
I've seen MTB a couple of times in the late 70's and late 80's. When i was in college, they were probably one of our favorite bands., considering I went to school in a rural area in Wisc.Beisdes admiring Toy Caldwell's guitar playing and muscianship, we all emulated the way he styled his cowbay hat, haha. The farther down you could bend that brim, the better, especially if you were wearing an illegal smile.
So much more than the typical idea of "Southern Rock" as it was considered way back then. MTB mixed jazz, country, and R&B into such an amazing sound. Now, in 2024, what category would this timeless band fall into? Think about it.
Oh My 🤠 I have wished for years to see a Live version of Desert Skies’ My favorite Tucker Song and Here it is👍💪. Thanks for posting this! Saw Marshall Tucker on their first west Coast tour. Cant you see had just hit the Charts. Toy is one of my favorite Songwriters and Guitarist❤️ and he’s playing a Strat in first song. Rare footage of McCorkle’ playing Lead👍 sound Quality was not best, but cool Rare live Tucker🇺🇸
Paul on drums.... some of the greatest drummers have said that he was far too underrated. They said that it seemed like it was 2 drummers playing in the band/song - ala Allman Bros and Dead.... What a great great compliment.
+Green Infrastructure Buffalo NY Buffalo NY Hi green. Please come and join a new Facebook Marshall Tucker band group. They deserve one and am trying to get one established. Thanks pal!
@@oneofmany1087 I think a little cocaine helped him some nights to keep that thumb spinning lol... especially for the superjams, etc. You know those guys partied backstage.
great Band! those were the days of great music form many groups from the south. Tucker was the best! Doug's voice was incredible. Volunteer Jam 1975 proves that with The Thrill is Gone featuring an all star cast joining Tucker boys. Doug was at his best for sure.
Rock stations wouldn't play them because they sounded country, country stations wouldn't play them because they sounded rock. Long live the Marshall Tucker Band!!!
Yep! They're from Spartanburg SC! Just a couple of hours north of my hometown! I saw them for the first time at Charlie B's Farm rock festival, maybe 1971 or maybe 72. Great weekend of lots of local bands and a few bands who were sort of known around the southeast. I remember Charlie Daniels Band was there too! First time I had seen him too! WAY before the Devil Went Down to Georgia! That was a great weekend when I was 16! I'll never forget that weekend! I was supposed to be home that Saturday night at midnight. Didn't get home till late Sunday afternoon! Was grounded for a week or so! But it was worth it!
I live less than a mile from Charlie B's! They have tried to revive it in recent years and have had annual concerts that have had decent local attendance, but nothing like what it was back in the 1970's! I knew these guys personally from the early days when they were still The Toy Factory. As great as they still were here, and as great a player as Franklin Wilkie was, and still is, there was a definite emptiness there after Tommy died. Then when Toy left to go on his own things really suffered. Doug has tried to keep it going and I have been to a couple of recent shows, but I probably won't go back. It just isn't the same. I do hope they are eventually inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame!!!!
Saw them when I was a foreign student at USC in Columbia, SC and was for ever converted to southern rock, Marshall Tucker Band, grits, and Jack Daniels!
Listen to the Tucker Boys everyday since ‘71…was fortunate enough to have had Tommy tell Joe McConnell their road Mgr. To out me on their permanent guest list…on stage at many shows and man that sound comin’ from 6 different directions an meeting in the middle of the stage was mind boggling..wore creased Levi’s over whatever shined up cowboy boots I had on, with a Tucked in cowboy shirt and wide belt with a Tucker belt buckle and a summer straw or winter XXX beaver felt winter hat bearing The Tucker Twist and at some night shows there would be a Tucker moon. Think they influence my life much…how I met the band was incredible…in ‘73 Toy and George had gotten out of the Limo and where walking into the venue together! I was standing at a closed off gate with security standing watch… I hollered “George McCorkle, fastest rhythm guitar player alive.” Toy elbowed George and said “he listens, get on in here boy!” The guard let me pass and they both clapped me on my shoulders and called Tommy over…told him the story and he asked my name he said “Steve we’re all brothers in this band..” walkin’ me into the backstage band room and he said “hey y’all this Is our brother Steve!” “Hey Bother Steve they all said!” He asked how many passes I needed and I had the wife and another couple with…” is 4 too many?” I asked. They gave me 4 and I pith mine on my Levi’s and went out to get the others….when you get back in there’s drinks and eats over there on them tables, you’re welcome to anything there and don’t be shy” that started a good relationship with the band, they were very personable and nobody had an ego!!
Marshall Tucker and Charlie Daniels(before he sold out)was my music in the mid 70's with some GD and NRPS, thrown in. Saw them all together in 77', except CD and to this day, it was the best show I've ever seen and I've been to more than a few in my life. 24hrs at a time is the story of my life. RIP, Tommy and Toy, 2 brothers that knew how to play and party, God bless.
Absolutely unbelievable talent...moving...I shall never forget seeing this band in the late 1980's in Atlanta, Georgia and having the exciting privilege of meeting Toy backstage...I am grateful to my dear friend Tom for accompanying me to this great concert. My favorite band of all times...and I thank my former college boyfriend, Gregg for introducing their music to me in the mid-1980's! Such rhythm and blues...The BEST! I could listen to them 24/7!
Right on, Kate! Please consider sharing some detail about your backstage meeting with Toy/MTB. Lotsa folks have similar experiences with the MTB that they cherish to this day...please share more, on this thread or someplace else. Peace and cheers to you, and a shout-out to all the under-appreciated "college boyfriends" out there like your man Gregg was.
SUBLIME... The Marshall Tucker Band - Live at the Houston Summit May 26, 1980 - This concert was performed less than one month after the death of founding member and brother Tommy Caldwell on April 28, 1980. Franklin Wilkie is brought on for bass duties. The date & venue info is definitely wrong on this YT listing, but the music - so FINE... This is a nice little "end of set" 46 minute snippet of a Pro Shot video taken in The Summit in Houston, Texas on May 26, 1980... Setlist: 0:00:00 - In My Own Way (Incomplete) 0:02:03 - Desert Sky 0:09:12 - 24 Hours At A Time 0:21:30 - Can't You See 0:27:39 - Searchin' For A Rainbow 0:33:42 - This Ol' Cowboy
Saw this same tour when it hit Santa Barbara. Was already a huge fan but this show has hung with me for 44 years. Some performances just hang with you forever.
one of the most unique bands in modern "rock" music. Much like the Brothers MTB mixed rock, blues, country and jazz into their own sound. These guys were extremely popular in DC metro area in the mid-70s......very underrated. Oh yeah, I prefer Toy singing This Old Cowboy over Doug.
Having attended this concert and watching it again reinforces why Marshall Tucker Band has always been right there at the top of my all time favorites. You would not believe the list of acts I saw in that venue, but the memory of this has always stood out.
This brings back memories. My band was on the road playing in Durham, NC. in June 1975 and we had a Sunday off so the guitar player and I made the 3 1/2 hour drive to Columbia, SC. to see Marshall Tucker at the Carolina Coliseum. They were just coming off an extended tour and said they were glad to be home. They put on a great show. Also on the bill were Lynyrd Skynyrd and blues man John Hammond. One of the best concerts I've seen.
Who were you playing with? I knew these guys from their early days as The Toy Factory. I had the opportunity to jam with a couple of them at Big Daddy's in Greenville, SC in 1975-76. Some of my close friends were the house band there (Mickey Fowler and the Variations). They were also close friends with Toy. The bass player, Tony Heatherly, became Toy's bass player when he left MTB and went out on his own. Anyway, Toy came over from Spartanburg (Pauline) one night along with Charlie Daniels. He brought his pedal steel. It was a couple weeks before my band went on tour for the first time in 1975. The drummer, let me sit in on The Orange Blossom Special! Their fiddle player, Jim Rumsey, and Charlie Daniels played "dueling fiddles"!!! It was definitely a night to remember!
I was there, Grinderswitch opened, MT in the middle & Skynyrd closed the show…crowd rushed the stage during free bird. Ushers were holding the crowd back when RVZ said “let them thru”… 50 fans crawled on stage to avoid the crush, I hid behind the keyboard player until a roadie tossed me off stage during FREE BIRD. My treated rock n’ roll moment!
This is obviously after April 1980. Frankie Wilkie is on bass, he can be seen at 19:30. Tommy Caldwell was the original bassist until his death in 1980.
You are correct without a doubt. Franklin did a fine job stepping into some big shoes to fill but he was their friend & Toy was fine with the choice to let him in & carry on .
Very happy to find back these great artists...since 1973, the year I passed my high school exams. Perhaps that 's why I couldn't cramm them in my head ;-D
hey I was there too- I posted on another forum about the WLIR master tapes I have, not the official release MTB Live On Long Island which is the other date (they played 2 dates, Friday and Sunday I believe) which is no where near the WLIR 92.7 show- which is the best MTB show of all time. In the next few days Tommy would die.
I am totally(AMAZED!!) at the small amount of views so far! I am so glad I just so happened to be up cleaning and felt like hearing what was, is and probably will always be my Hero Band!!! Thank You So Very Much for posting this Ultimate Treasure! What a Great Surprise it was to Find,,,,,And of course I couldn't just LISTEN! So Now my broom and I will finish our Kitchen floor and PLAY IT AGAIN! Considering the equipment back then was so different than now! I am still floored and covered with Goosebumps.....Kinda! One Question.......How did you hold that all this time and just put it out now? Thanks Again! I hope there are more coming soon!
"a concert so nice i played it twice"...first on my phone this morning, now on my laptop with speakers cranked. Toy's guitar work here is untouchable. shame it'smissing the first couple tunes.
That's Franklin Wilkie on Bass. He joined after the terrible loss of Tommy Caldwell. This ain' no where near 75. Franklin was in the band in the 80's. Long live Toy and Tommy and the golden days of this very very special band. God Bless. God rest the Caldwell Brothers.
This is not 1975. Franklin Wilkie is playing bass. This is after Tommy’s tragic accident. Toy is still thumbin!! This is in the early 1980’s. Just any FYI !! I was blessed to see the Original band and the this band. What a great great band!!! One of the best!!!☮️

Toy Caldwell: Fastest thumb in the west! He was the best and so were the MTB!
The sign of a true guitar legend... Drop the theatrics, make that guitar do things that even the Gods couldn't imagine! We love you Toy!
I'm still a fan, been in love with this band ever since the golden age of classic rock in the 70s, never went to a concert but thank the rock gods they were on the radio, what a treat to hear some live cuts from their golden times.
In my opinion, the most under recognized and under appreciated band of all time
Simply cannot hear or listen to this over over & over...Never enough...Thanks to Doug and the boys!...
Love this old footage...thanks.
wore mine out replaced all when cds came out, they could get down.
Saw these guys in 1979 with Fire fall two days before I went into the Navy. Fantastic show and one of my all time favs. Great live band!!!!!!!
22 minutes in I begin to understand how much Toy felt it. Thankyou ever so much. an epic share.
was at this concert on the front row--- why i lost 20% of our hearing--- dam, they were killer-listen to them on a regular basis--cannot beleive they are both gone these last 30+ yrs
I believe you believe you were there 😂
Just seen them at Carnegie Music Hall south side of Pittsburgh. I just turned 64 and the last time I seen them was 1977. What great music they created in their songs. It’s here for ever! Thanks for the talent and the memories.
i grew up in the south, winston salem nc. moved there when i was 6. street full of older boys. 2,3,4,5,6 years older than me & my brotato scott. we were brought up on the stones & the beatles & allman brothers & goddamn southern rock (thank you lord). im 52 now & i have traveled the entire us & alot of the world. why do i tell u this? because i been around man - point is - the older i get, the more i come back to marshall tucker. 24 hours, this ol cowboy, the best song ever (heard it in a love song!) cant u see, etc. i mean these motherfkers just had it. period. i still to this day, cant get enough.
murica
Grew up as a teenager hanging out with friends loving all southern rock and partying 😘
I love Toys BIG OLE SMILE at 9:47 when Doug Gray messed up coming in late for the vocals 😊😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
who's listening in 2024 ❤🎵🎶👍
Nobody like them.
I find this hard to believe this was 1975, I see Franklin Wilkie on Bass, he joined the band in 1980, in 1975 Tommy Caldwell was alive and well.
I was gonna post the same thing...Toy's too old here for this to be '75
I've seen MTB a couple of times in the late 70's and late 80's.
Thanks pal!
What a genuine treat this video is.
Amen. Toy is one of the greatest underappriciated guitarist . Screw the R&R hall of fame
Damn... Toy's picking with his thumb on 24 Hours At A TIME is amazing. I've never seen anything like it. What a monster guitar player.
- Damn right, bro. I love Toy..man he was on a vibe of his own....MTB forever.
that style came from Wes Montgomery famous jazz player and now only Jeff Beck plays that way!!!
@@oneofmany1087 I think a little cocaine helped him some nights to keep that thumb spinning lol... especially for the superjams, etc. You know those guys partied backstage.
24 hours…one of my all time favorite
great Band! those were the days of great music form many groups from the south. Tucker was the best! Doug's voice was incredible. Volunteer Jam 1975 proves that with The Thrill is Gone featuring an all star cast joining Tucker boys. Doug was at his best for sure.
Just watched that. Truth
One of the best southern rock bands ever!!! Saw this tour! Saw them in those days 5 or 6 times!! That's when music was real!!
I have lived in spartanburg all my life they in my blood
Beautiful. Fan for over 40 years. I love MTB and I dont live without them. Hell yeah.
Wow that guy can play a guitar.
I may have never heard of them before but I know that I now luv their music.
Australia
Oh what a treat you have found..will keep you alive when you think you just can’t walk another step….from Canada..🇨🇦
grew up listening to these country boys!!!
Boy oh boy is "Desert Sky" wonderful! Here in "fly over country", this is our style!!!
Amazing! I love The Marshall Tucker Band. I'm seeing them live this weekend in NY! Can't wait.
Going on 50+ years of listening pleasure. Best of all the Southern Rockers. Perfect road trip.....
Hey, for footage from the early '80's... this is friggin' awesome! Thanks a million, man...
What a voice…👍👏.. you just don’t hear great music like this anymore, the sax, rhythm, etc., dang my college days 😊. MTB… right on..✌🏼💯❤️!
SUBLIME...
The Marshall Tucker Band -
Live at the Houston Summit
May 26, 1980 -
This concert was performed less than one month after the death of founding member and brother Tommy Caldwell on April 28, 1980.
Setlist:
0:00:00 - In My Own Way (Incomplete)
0:02:03 - Desert Sky
0:09:12 - 24 Hours At A Time
0:21:30 - Can't You See
0:27:39 - Searchin' For A Rainbow
0:33:42 - This Ol' Cowboy
Damn sure looks like the lights around the top of the SUMMIT
Plus Desert Skies was released on Carolina Dreams in ‘77
Saw this same tour when it hit Santa Barbara.
Oh yeah, I prefer Toy singing This Old Cowboy over Doug.
favorite MTB song

thanks. doug o`c
Having attended this concert and watching it again reinforces why Marshall Tucker Band has always been right there at the top of my all time favorites. You would not believe the list of acts I saw in that venue, but the memory of this has always stood out.
Me too, I saw Little feat on new years eve 78 I believe, had Jerry jeff Walker up first, he was too drunk, great concert before Lol George past.
Sounds So Awesome this is when bands were bands GREAT JAMS Thank ya ✌💙
In 1969-70's Grand Funk Railroad played COBO HALL in Detroit,Michigan MTB was the opening act....What a night!!!!!
Marshall Tucker Band is one of the best bands ever 👍❗️ Seen them a few times back early 80s
I always loved there style of music I saw them live in Worcester, Massachusetts glad to see ur still Rocking.
@13:00 Exactly why TC is probably the most under-rated Guitarist of his generation.
And 24 :00
This is obviously after April 1980.
Who are the Marshall Tucker Band..music gods.that’s who..🇨🇦
Can’t you see 💞☮️ and countless others , such a great band ☮️💕♥️✌🏻😎🇺🇸
This music so still holds up. MTB. Brilliant!
2024 and beyond.
saw them at the Coliseum in '75. they rocked Houston. great show.
So MTB in NY Nassau Veterans Coliesum in 1980
Running like the wind tour. Awesome
hey I was there too- I posted on another forum about the WLIR master tapes I have, not the official release MTB Live On Long Island which is the other date (they played 2 dates, Friday and Sunday I believe) which is no where near the WLIR 92.7 show- which is the best MTB show of all time. In the next few days Tommy would die.
Whatever brought you here ...take a load off...set fer a wile...
My older brother came home with 'Carolina Dreams ' in 76. I was amazed and loved every note!
Loved Marshall Tucker since they first hit the radio with "fire on the mountain". Totally awesome music!❤️👌😉😎👊✌️🍹🍻
This band has been the soundtrack to my life since I was seventeen.
Always loved Tommy Caldwell's bass playing...R.I.P.
Vastly underrated.
Well this ain't it
He was at this concert
@@janegalloway5590 🇺🇸🎼🎵What's your point Jane? He's dead regardless...
He wasn't at this concert. Why?
This is not 1975. Franklin Wilkie is playing bass. This is after Tommy’s tragic accident. Toy is still thumbin!! This is in the early 1980’s. Just any FYI !! I was blessed to see the Original band and the this band. What a great great band!!! One of the best!!!☮️
I just watched this 4 times looking for Tommy then I realized it had to be after his accident
This has got to be after 1980, as Tommy isn't playing bass. That's Franklin Wilkie on bass
Some of these songs were not even written by 1975.
John Easler : I noticed Tommy wasn't there. Must have been after his death. I love his solo volunteer jam II.
Agreed the date is wrong
glad someone else noticed this! It's still good but not quite what it was in 75 really
That Great Ole Southern rock--short lived but some of the best music and musicians ever. Sure brings back many good memories of the the time and of my brother--these were the best of times.
One of the Best in Southern Blues Rock and forever in remembrances.
Moved to Oklahoma five years ago from Seattle and my early exposure to southern rock has made my transition a good one.
30 year old Nebraskan that lived for a while in west Texas and their record “Desert Skies” gives me nostalgia. Marshall Tucker Band forever.
LOVE MARSHALL TUCKER!!!! They were the BEST!!!!!
I'm from Argentina 🇦🇷 and I'm a big fan I love Marshall Tucker!!
Saw the band in a bar in Austin Tx. the Armadillo World Headquarter's while stationed at Bergstrom A. F. B is n the early 70's. Been playing their albums ever since. Still have my record player lol I bought on base and their vinyl n still crank em up so let, s have a " lil shit kickin n chickin picking to this day!!!
MTB one of my favorites, made my own cassette from 3 or 4 albums we had. Tenth is special album
Searching for a rainbow, there goes George !
One song doesn't cut it! A full concert was the only way to truly enjoy a Marshall Tucker concert! And to my special friend and wife ..."In my own way" ...says it all!
saw them about five months after this....still alive to talk about it :)
