- My first time figuring out how to fit an electric shower.
About me:
I'm Aiden and I'm documenting what was supposed to be my barn conversion, which has now ended up being a new build. I don't have a trade, I just have a go and I'll be doing lots of work myself. This is the boring bit in grand designs that you don't get to see. Subscribe and follow along to find out how our future home turns out.

When you're looking for drill bits to go through tile, you want to look at ones that say 'masonry'. Screwfix is a good place, they usually tell you exactly what each bit is meant for. Those hand held drills aren't really meant for this kind of work either, so it will be a struggle. Also if you're doing a 5ml hole, a 6 ml wall plug is correct. You want the plug to squeeze in to stop it moving, if it were the same size as the hole it would just wiggle around! Small tip, not only for tiles. Drill a pilot or guide hole first, a 3mm and then follow up with a 5mm, it'll be much easier!
Nice to see you back - really cheered up my evening, seeing your channel pop up in my feed today.
Fantastic to see you back. Really love the channel and your ‘can do ‘ attitude. Hope everything is going well and look forward to more vids.

Good to see you back mate, hope you’re good.
good to see you back
This video was super helpful. Just installed my first electric shower. Went very smoothly!
🙌 Nice 😁
Best style for DIY vids. Great to see again.
Thanks mate 👍
Missed you man. I really needed this, thanks.
Good job Aiden!
Welcome back mate
I recently found your channel and got to "im not doing no more videos" and then boom a new video 😂
Welcome back 🙂
Welcome back!
Great to see a new video from you
Seeing you pop up made my day mate. Glad to see you are looking well. I admire your fuck it and give it a-go attitude! Hope to see you on a more regular basis.
Thanks buddy. Might not be as regular to start off with though 😑
Great video you're brave trying to do this yourself! To anyone watching remember showers are a lot more tricky than dishwashers and washing machines, doing one from scratch (as opposed to replacing one) is quite major work with wiring from fuse box and the work needs inspecting by building regulations inspector or you can't insure/rent or sell a property without the paperwork so best to use professional. It's not expensive I had a quote £200 typical price for a new fit same day too, can be less if you use someone local.
When I saw the blowtorch first thing I thought about when said about using it upside down with the electric cables so near above is the risk of heat melting the flex on wires!! A safer way to do that would be tape a sheet of something fire/heat-resistant over those electric cables before using a blow torch to protect them from getting melted, as is easily done from the video accident!
Brilliant!! Helped me a lot straight to Screwfix bought a tap connector (thanks to you) job done 👍👍👍
Awesome 🙌 yeah it's much easier using a tap connector 😉
Legend. I admire your balls (not literally) but the sheer determination and willingness to have a go.
Thanks mate
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT no problem, love your work, keep it up mate 👊🏻
Excellent news that you're back. I hope that the rest has done you good and you're on the mend. You agonising over how to solder on the fitting mirrors my DIY experiences. Don't overdo things mate, we're all glad to see you looking fit and well.
Does that mean that we're both perfectionists? 😂
So glad your back. Hope your ok?
Welcome back!
This was really interesting, thanks. I'm planning to put a shower into a new bathroom on my top floor and I am in early planning stages, no idea how things work in the UK, absolutely no idea whether I can have a regular shower or if I need a power shower. I see those a lot over here and I'm hoping I don't need one because I have really good water pressure, including for hot water... but I clearly need to do a lot more research. I'm not even sure why people choose power showers over regular hot/cold supplies. The shower looks great!
This is the first time I've fitted an electric shower, I've done 3 others in my life with thermostatic mixer bars. I suppose the benefit in an electric one is you only have to run a cold feed (that's all I have 😂). Sounds like you will be good to go for a standard mixer set up though 👍
Cool. You're back. Not watched video yet, but sure it will be good 👍🏼
Yessss, you're back!!!!
I am indeed 🙂
Yaaas! Welcome back!! Came on to find out how your waterproofed your coachhouse shower as i’m doing mine today, I went for a stiebel eltron water heater to serve my studio apartment above a garage, it’s 12kw so hoping it can provide a decent shower… glad you’re back
Nice one 🙌 I considered getting something like that but decided it would be abit quicker to just get the shower in and then do a smaller water heater for the sinks later
You're a clever sod Aiden 😂😂😂 well done mate. Hope you are well 👍🏻
Thanks buddy
Wait, what??? Aiden, you're back??? Awesome! Weird, only today I was thinking about the channel and how much I missed it. UA-cam didn't bother to tell me you'd done anything new but now I have videos to binge. This is the best news I've had for ages! Hope you're all good after the break.
Haha Hello mate 👋 ah my viewing numbers have taken a dive recently, that may be why 🤷♂️
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT got notifications on now. Honestly, it's so good to see you back on here, you genuinely inspire me to to do more myself with my own house.
Amazing to see you back matey!
I absolutely love your "catch phrase" - I don't have a trade either, but I like to have a go (when the wife let's me)
Wish there was some Merch: "I'm not a . I don't have a trade. I just have a go" with a different design for Carpenter, Plasterer (?), now Plumber 😎
Hey! I thought I had to have 10000 subscribers to set up one of those merch shelf things but turns out I could do it now 🤔 I might just have to have a look into it 👍
Ya Back!!! yeah. :)
Yo Ironmaiden, hope everything is ok & the break has done you good.
I put a longer pipe route in for my shower, just to allow room to get an isolator in. Nice job mate 👍👍
I put an isolator in... But it cuts off the whole shower room 😂 did you put in full bore valves or not? I've been wondering if it really makes much of a difference 🤷♂️
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I just use standard iso valves, never had any flow issues, did you know they did angled iso valves, very good for awkward applications.
Bosch multi construction drill bits work great for wall plugs on tiled surfaces. 👍
A few others mentioned them, I will have to try them out 👍
Great video
you look fresh mate i think you needed that break
7:06 I use small Bosch masonry bit on some masking tape then widen with bigger bit if needed. found tile bits a waste of time. Alternative use diamond tile cutter hole saw but you need a jig to hold in place (piece of scrap wood) as they will definitely wander.
Thanks mate. I ended up figuring out that I could start the hole with the arrow shaped bits and use one of the diamond bits to do the rest quicker (I even recorded a little video). I'll have to get one of them bosch bits and see if it's better to start off with, then I could do another video 😂
Nice refreshing honest video
Thanks mate 👍
Where the bleeding he’ll have you been! Don’t disappear mate, I get severance anxiety
I had to return some video tapes 😂
Best vid EVER!
Thanks buddy 👍
I use just standard hss bits, work for me 😊
Got to muster up the courage to turn the water on now, just replaced the solonoid on a mira sport max, had to disconnect everything to get to it and the solonoid did not want to come of or new one to go on, the water bottle and flow valve are push fit how that is a good idea is beyond me, it's enough to give you nightmares, take a bath is my advise. Great video, stressed me out!
😑🤞💦😩😂 Haha I'm guessing you're not a plumber cause surely you would need a whole new shower if you was? 😉 I'm glad you mentioned this though cause I'm not sure I would have even have thought of just replacing a part like that
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT yes the solanoid which is a common problem it magnetically pushes a plunger up in the flow valve to allow the cold input water to go to the heating bottle, I am now an expert! I wont be letting any water into the shower until I come back of holiday and keep an eye out for leaks, £8 cost of solonoid and several sleepless nights!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Glad your back I’m stating mine barn now so been watching for advice. One thing I do want to ask if ok ?
Is about the roof do you think it’s worth paying out for a zinc roof or the greencoat system? Be grateful for the advice and if pos who you recommend.Keep at it mate you look well 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Hey, I think maybe I would be lead by the roofing contractor on this one in a way. If you get them to supply and fit they can do it at the reduced rate of 5% vat. If you buy the product for the contractor to fit you would have to pay the full vat. Although net net its the same at the end it's good to have less upfront costs. The contractors will have certain suppliers they use on the regular, or will have certain experience using a particular system and its always a risk trying to get a good job out of them for a material they don't usually use. Get in as many quotes as you possibly can (go for 10, you will probably only get a couple back!) and then go from there. Manufacturers can sometimes point you in the direction of their suppliers/installers.
A guy named Luke asked me about my roof many months ago, I warned him about what might go wrong and guess what, it did! He needed another 10 sheets at very short notice (because it was worked out wrong like I said would happen 🤦♂️), the lead time was 6+weeks. I had 11 sheets left and by pure luck it turned out his barn was 10 minutes down the road! His roofing contractor still didn't finish everything properly and made a pigs ear of the reveals. This was because they wasn't used to using the product for something residential.
Thank you mate, really appreciate it and all the advice . I’m just about to start watching your video on insulation on Ways on how I can save 😊
great to see you back ..
Is that not a press-fit copper fitting? Nice to see you back anyway!
This one was a solder ring, they do look abit similar now you mention it. I've never tried a press fit, the electric machine press tools are super expensive though! So I doubt I ever will try one of those 😅
Fair play👏
❤️
Did you melt the push fit in the wall
We will never know... 😂 Naaa I don't think so, it hasn't leaked or anything 😁
Hi I just bought one and I experience problem in installation as I don’t have copper mains pipe which is work as ground .any idea what I have to do in this situation.many thanks
Hi Michal. Are you talking about the mains water pipe that comes into your property?
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT yes mate main water pipe . Mine is plastic
@@Milo_ko1 do you have any copper pipes in the property then or is it all plastic?
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT there is central heating pipes in the same bathroom
@@Milo_ko1 if you have copper pipes somewhere in your property they normally need to be earthed in just one place. It's something referred to as bonding. If you check your consumer unit you should have an earth block with a 10mm earth wire (yellow and green) which will run to a copper water pipe and will be connected with an earth bonding clamp/strap. Gas pipes are also normally bonded too. There are some occasions when your pipework doesn't need bonding like in my lodge. The incoming water pipe is plastic and everything else is plastic apart from the small bits that come out the wall and a 2m section where I put the stopcock in. Despite this an electrician that installed my consumer unit wanted to bond that 2m section even though it wasn't necessary. He wanted to be on the safe side. Hope that helps.
You should have cleaned the copper pipe before soldering.its the very basics
That part didn't make the final edit 😉
masonry bit
Does he really know what he’s doing !!
I do Graham 😉
Why didn't you push the "push fit fitting" on the copper pipe that was poking out the wall, then simply offer the shower assy up to the nut of the push fit fitting & tighten it into the 1/2" thread. !!!
Also when using solder joints use should set the flame low to prevent burning the surroundings, the flame is 600c it'll melt the solder but having the flame set lower puts you in more control. Good on you for trying tho lots of people dont bother.. 👍
There wasn't enough room for the push fitting to go on the pipe, I think you need a massive hole in the back and a pipe that's not fixed. Good tip on using a smaller flame 👍 I didn't even think to turn the gas down 😂
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I hate plastic push fit style fittings, if its not nut&olive or soldered its not reliable.. I've earnt £££ repairing flooded properties because of them..
@@kaydeem5257 surely some are worse than others 🤷 I'm still debating what to use in the main house 😬
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT You seem to know one end of a Rothenberger from the other, stick to sweated joints or nut & olive, as the feeling of regret when a plastic fitting fails will haunt you forever, esspecially after it fills you're celler with water, which is where one customer kept his Pannagalie next to his Dad's origonal 911 Targa. Yep, all due to plastic fittings... 😣😢😭..
@@kaydeem5257 the question is, shall I run copper pipe in as I build the studwork or notch them afterwards? 😆
There's where u went wrong
🙈
I don't want to look😮
😂 why not? There's a happy ending 😁
