    Thanks very much. I’m just doing mine and glad I saw this video. I never thought to use push fit I found a slim pipe about 19mm form home bargains and I’m going to use it as a sleeve for the flexipipe when I bury it in the chased channel and cement it. The pipe will be protected and still able to move up and down. Cheers.

    Very interesting to c the differences in wiring and such from California to England. We use 120 volt for most things. I have never seen an electric shower. We plumb hot and cold water to shower, sink and tub. Nearly all water heaters run on natural gas. The terminology is also way different. The systems r different. But both r highly developed and efficient. More than one way to skin a cat. Also, never saw a toilet that didn’t mount on drain pipe with wax ring.

      I always find it amazing how many different ways we all do things, but with the internet and travel the world is getting smaller! Electric showers have been common here for years although gas heated water mixer showers are probably more common now. We have combi boilers that heat water when the tap is turned on but also more commonly we have pressurised boiler systems which allow hot water to be use under pressure in several rooms at once since several en suites and bathrooms have become common place within recent years. Problem with the combi boiler is if you run too many taps or showers at once you lose pressure. Thanks for the info and great to have you watching from afar. Best of luck!

      The temperature is adjusted by regulating the flow of water. Turning the temp up means the water slows down and spends more time heating up. The element would still be outputting 9.5 kw regardless of the temp dial setting.
      Those showers that have 2 dials incorporate 2 elements, the eco setting turns only one element on so it runs at half power - useful in summer when the incoming water is warmer.

    You should also have explained when fitting a new electric shower that the dial needs to be set to cold, so that this fills the empty boiler with cold water. Otherwise if the dial is set to hot, then this will turn on the heating element before water fills the boiler and burn out the heating element.
    Furthermore, you don't need to use silicon in or around the shower unit.

    interesting that they don't advise to seal the unit to the wall, I always have done top and sides, leaving just a small drain area at the very lowest point. But one thing I would mention, I note you did not seal around the riser fittings? Always dropping some silicone into the plug holes and around the internal parts of the support brackets, to keep the water out from behind the wall / tiles.
    I know they are all like it, but those big 10mm cables right by push fit water inlets creep me out! Great vid again. cheers

      from mira "Under no circumstances should an electric shower be sealed to the wall. There are short ‘spacers’ in each corner of the shower’s rear-casing which keep it proud of the wall by a few millimetres. This allows ventilation around the side and back of the shower module. Without this ventilation, it may be prone to condensation or over-hearing, which will subsequently cause failure of, or damage to, the internal components. Water or electric supplies that come in from behind the unit must be sealed to prevent water entering the building structure."

    My bathroom doesn’t have a shower at all i’m thinking I’d have to install an isolation switch run into the fuse board and then run the shower into that. Also I need to consider how I would go about installing the cold water feed. Can I just come straight off of the pipes that feed the bath? I would much rather install new flex pipes to be honest but again that would involve a bit of work. Perhaps I could install flex run it under the hallway floor and then through the wall. My flat is all concrete and load bearing walls so it’s an absolute pain in the arse

    Hi,your videos are great!very good job!i would like to ask you something,i just bought an electric shower but without knowing nothing about it,i am a little bit afraid of the plumbing part,basically i do have a normal shower tap and the plumbing system works with an electric pump and since i can not afford to spend almost 1000 euro for plumbers etc the only option available was to take out the old tap and from there to the cold side connecting an hose straight to the electric shower,in my mind it should work but im not 100% sure because everytime i connect the pressure washer to that very tap for some reason after 3 second stop working like if the water stop running and the only way to use it without problems is that i need to open another tap (feeded by the water pump) everywhere in the house and keep it open until done,in that way everything works fine and because of this im not 100% sure,im just worried that the electric shower would do the same of the pressure washer...have you any idea if can be done in this way?

    I'm looking to replace a broken shower with a similar fit to it as you described near the start of the video. This one looks like it would do the job as all the electrical and water connections are in the same place. The current one that that is broken is a Mira Essentials 10.8 kw. I believe they don't sell them any more and i'm looking for an easy replacement job. I've done it before so am confident in doing so. Do you think this shower is a suitable replacement for the Essentials shower. I could provide the link to the installation and user guide for the Essentials which shows the internal layout. It looks quite similar to this. Any info helps. Look forward to a reply, cheers mate.

      Hi Frazer, to be honest you can fit most showers where an old one has been, it's just a case of covering old hole and doing a neat job so you want a shower the same size or bigger. But the important bit is safety. Make sure your cable is big enough to take 10.8 kw and the MCB is the correct watts to protect the cable. Also it should be RCD protected. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      Hi Alan, the shower bracket is to hold the shower head while you shower. As for the height of shower hose, I'm not sure about that. Just follow the manufacturers instructions for the particular shower that you have. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  10 місяців тому

      Shouldn't affect the pressure as it's controlled by an electric pump but placement of the shower is often down to ergonomics and where you cable and water pipes are accessible. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 👍

    Our shower broke down years ago. Im thinking of replacing it this week. once I turn off the electricity, water and get to the stage where I have put the shower unit on should I turn the water valve back on and test if the water comes through?
    Its been years since the shower was working. No water comes out of the shower now but I put that down to the shower not working and not because the valve isn't working. I assume the valve is still working. They had a plumber look at it years ago when it first broke and my mother said the reason the shower is not working is because the motor inside of the shower unit broke. I assume she was reffering to the temperature unit.
    Thanks for your help.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 років тому

      Hi there, if you isolate the power then isolate the service valve (assuming you have one), remove the shower from the wall. Then open the service valve and if water comes out then you know the water supply is fine and it's the shower that's broken. Please bear in mind that fitting a shower comes under the Part P regulations so you either need a qualified electrician to carry out the work or speak to building control in your local authority who will arrange for an inspector to check your work (for a fee) on completion if you do it yourself. As your existing shower is old you may well need a new complete shower cable to cope with the power of modern showers, and possibly an RCD if you don't already have one in order to be safe, and comply with the current legislation / regulations. I point all this stuff out in the video, I just want you to be aware that if installed poorly without the correct safety in place, electricity and water is not a good mix! These extras also come at additional cost and can make the job more complicated. Good luck with it and thanks for watching!

    Hi man. Good clear video with all sorts of tips.
    If you've got time I was just looking for some clarification. I'm a keyboard tapper so don't do diy!
    A fitter from a company installed a shower for an elderly couple but it's not flush to the wall and loose. He then advised them to put tape around the side of the unit to stop water getting in 'because you might die'. To top it off there was no cleanup attempt at job 'completion'.
    I see you say sealing the box to the wall is not advised, only the hole around the cables/water supply. So despite the disappointing job done it sounds like the only issue I should be concerned with is tightening the box to the wall. I don't need to be concerned with water getting through the shower unit/cover? Thanks.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 років тому

      Hi, you have to go with the instructions for that specific shower. Often there will be a seal between the back and the front of the shower so water can't penetrate. Some showers say not to seal them in due to them getting too hot and they need air circulation. I couldn't say without seeing the shower. I would advise to get another electrician to check it, or speak to your local building control. Also see if you can find the instructions for the shower unit and see what they say as all showers may vary. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    Excellent video as always. Important question for you...I've just had a Triton T80z fast fit electric shower fitted (the previous shower failed at an unfortunate time as I am thinking of enlarging the bathroom with new fittings next year). This has replaced a Mira, both old and new showers being 8.5kW so this is a' replacement' not a new fitting. As far as the electrician was concerned (and as I understand the current Building Regs.) in this instance an RCD retrospectively fitted to the circuit is desirable but NOT absolutely necessary. In the manufacturers literature and when I rang Triton they state that an RCD is mandatory. So I presume my warranty will not be valid without an RCD being fitted. As I say, I am thinking of having a complete overhaul of my bathroom next year. My question is this...is the current situation safe without the RCD being fitted for the time being, the electrician says it is and the RCD just gives added protection. What do you think? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 років тому

      I am not an electrician and have all my work signed off by a qualified electrician. That said, my understanding is that all new installations or replacements require RCD protection. A good way to do this is get an electrician to fit a new consumer unit which will have rcd protection for all circuits in your house. Maybe speak to your local authority building inspector. Hope that helps and thanks for your question.

    i don’t have a shower fitted in my tiny bathroom; so it looks like i might have to get a professional in to sort it all out.
    i don’t think i can do this myself. I’m not a DIY-ER. It’s arranging how the shower unit is going to fit in.
    There’s a lot of work involved, with the electrics and water pipe. i would imagine then….. the water pipe connects from the wash basin pipe. All, i have in my kitchen is a compact water heater ( Ariston) looks very complicated.

      The water intake on an electric shower must be a mains cold fitting usually it needs to enter the unit via the ceiling, this is so that a head of pressure is created. It can't come from the wash basin cold unless it is mains pressure, but even then it would look unsightly because you would have pipe runs all over the bathroom. If you have a loft tank, that would be ideal.

    Is 10mm cable safe to use for all/most electrical showers?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 років тому

      It all depends on the length of cable, the shower, the MCB or fuse protecting the cable etc. But generally speaking 10mm is going to cover you for most standard showers providing you use the correcting rated fuse/ mcb protection with additional RCD protection. Always check with the manufacturers instructions and with a qualified electrician. A wet shower is not the place you want to be with dodgy wiring! Thanks for watching!

    In the UK do you have hot water at the sinks? I'm just wondering why you would need an electric water heater in the shower. In the US we don't have anything like this.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 років тому +1

      Hi there, yes we have hot water at the tap. We have different types of boilers that are either gas or oil powered which heat the water, either when you turn the tap on, or during the day and kept warm to be used later. We also have immersion heaters which are electrical elements that heat tanks of water. Showers can be powered by a gas or oil boiler so as you say no need to use an electric shower, but in some cases people like both as if the gas supply is knocked out, you can still have a hot shower and vice versa. Electric showers are very common and nothing out of the ordinary in the UK. Just type in electric shower online! Hope that helps. For regular vids please subscribe. • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 років тому

      Hi David, I drew the cable through before the tiling was done. I brought it from my consumer unit, through the ceiling in my hall and down the wall to a double pole 60Amp isolation switch just out side the bathroom (the red switch in the video), then back up to the ceiling, across the bathroom ceiling and down the wall behind the shower. Before I did the bathroom, I made a stud wall with a void a few inches thick behind the shower which allowed me to hide my plumbing and shower cable behind the wall. If you are retro fitting the cable, it can be tricky as the floor boards upstairs may need to come up! Hope that explanation helps. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching.

      You would need a suitable junction box to extend the cable. It would have to rated at the correct power to take the high current of a shower. Your existing cable may also need upgrading as many old shower cables are inadequate for modern showers. You also need to ensure it is protected by the correct MCB in the consumer unit and make sure it has RCD protection. If you're unsure of this I'd recommend getting an electrician to do it for you. They will test it to make sure it's safe. Don't mess around with a shower if you unsure about what your doing and remember to check all the work complies with Part P of the building regulations (in the UK). Thanks for watching.

    Thank you for creating and sharing your video. Watching it made me think about getting one for our vacation home in continental Europe. We have not seen electric showers there, none of the stores know that these even exist, makes me think there is a reason. However it is just an electrical appliance that needs the correct electrical setup and a water supply, so theoretically we could? but i'm not a professional so best not to assume. What are your thoughts, do you know if these can be installed abroad or are they made only for here?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE

      You would have to find one that is designed for the correct voltage. In the UK we use 240volts / 230volts and these units are commonly used here. Also each country, and possibly region will have it's own building regulations or codes regarding things like this so you would need to check if it is compliant. To do that you would need to peak to a building control officer (or equivalent in that country). Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

This gave me a 2 inch gap behind the plasterboard to do my pipework and electrics and gave me the clean look I wanted. The downside is you loose about 2.5" of depth to you bathroom but the finished result is a lot slicker than exposed pipe work and cable in trunking down the wall. • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 років тому +1

      Hi juxtn, here in the UK one of the showers we use is the electric shower. This type of shower heats the water instantly so that hot water is always available even if the boiler is broken. They are made to strict standards, they are sealed from the water so the electrical parts should stay dry. They also have to be installed by someone who is competent or qualified to do so. There are very strict guidelines on how to do it including cable size, cable protection, and fuse rating in relation to the power of the shower. We also use what is called a Residual Current Device (RCD). This is basically a trip switch that in the event of water touching an electrical part, it will cut all the power supply and protect you from an electric shock. I guess if you don't use them in your country, I can see why it would look a bit dangerous! What country are you from out of curiosity? Thanks for your question and thanks for watching!

    Tempting people to do DIY electrics in a shower room, is this ok with building regulations, can this be safe ?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 років тому

      Hi Al, I fully understand your concerns and I thought about this before posting the video. I often see people on forums asking how to install showers and they go on to explain they have done some of the wiring already and it is usually completely wrong and dangerous. The advise from members on the forum is usually 'get a sparky' or something over complicated and often incorrect, probably from apprentice electricians that have been taught all the theory and had no experience. I think if someone is determined to have a crack at wiring, they will do it regardless of the rules which I know and agree is wrong. In the video I fully explain the requirements under building regs and the options available to installers. I also explain how to fit a shower safely, so if anyone follows my example like for like, at least I know their installation will be safe which is important. Unfortunately there are loads of houses all over the UK (and other countries no doubt) that have dangerously wired showers. Even showers installed correctly in the 90's will now be considered unsafe if they have no RCD protection and potential upgrades to more powerful showers in the meantime on the same cable.
      There is also another reason for me explaining the process. Firstly, many people will watch the video hoping to do the job themselves, and when they see the additional safety upgrades required from their old shower (i.e thicker cable, RCD protection, new isolation switch etc) they will actually be deterred and employ an electrician. Secondly, many people message me who have no intention of carrying out work themselves, they just want a fair representation of what is required for a job so that they can obtain a fair quote from a builder. This is something that is important to me as I don't think tradesman should take advantage of people with little experience.
      So in brief, no I don't think it is encouraging people to do it, I think they have already decided to do it, hence they have come and found my video. At least if my video is followed, the installation will be safe and hopefully no one will be hurt. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching.

      Thanks for the reply. Electrics in bathrooms is notifiable to local building control - a legal requirement of The Buildings Act 2010. • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 років тому

      Hi Al, I state all of that at the start of the video. You might find that you can buy a product that can filter the water as it comes into the house, which would prolong the life of all your waterborne appliances. Try changing the shower head first to see if that helps, as it is cheap enough to start.

      Hi everyone one question I need to know ASAP, I'm no electrician or plumber and certainly wouldn't touch a electric shower with a barge pole but a friend has just had one put in only she showed me the mess of the tiling they( two cowboys) had left after doing the disappearing act,
      Nothing was level even the glass wall cabinet wasn't level (she put a deodorant can on top of it and it rolled off and fell to the floor! > now you have a mini idea how bad they left her bathroom in then one thing that concerns me 110% when i noticed these Pr*cks had cut a hole in the top of the shower wall mounted section with what must have been a hacksaw with the grey twin+earth wire's feeding the unit it (the wiring) was inside a length of what looked like 20-25mm trunking self adhesive type only it hasn't even stuck to the "so-called tiling job" because the tiling was so bad each tile was not flush with the one next to it "they were sitting proud of each other and the same trunking has then been cut off at ceiling hight probably again with a hacksaw because the edges are rough were the cut has been made and you can see them going up. Into the loft because this trunking is cut 1/4" short of ceiling hight then you can visibly see the wire's going inside the shower body (the wall mounted section) even though they had tried to cut this trunking flush on top of the wall mounted section of this new shower now she has a (handmade cut out on the wall mounted section of this shower unit) and next to this is a another open entrance point about the same size as the trucking next to it (what they had cut out )and if I remember rightly in my opinion was this entrance point was a factory made on the body of the shower but in my opinion this opening shouldn't be left open and exposed to the out coming water from the shower head it should be closed off in some way, when I seen it after having a little peep (look) i said to her straight away "don't use that thing"it's a death trap!
      Then she said " we have been and its not that bad but we have to turn the taps on in the sink because the water gets too hot and it's the only way to cool it down and I've just seen a comment on another video saying "don't use push fit on a shower (the Cowboys have) they have had the bath taken out again I said "well I certainty wouldn't" use the shower even if you have no bath but she now suggested putting silicone over these two areas open to the water just for a bit of what she calls (a peace of mind) (thinking it with solve things)" blocking them off so no water or splashes can get inside,
      I know it's not my house but I can't stop thinking of it "even though someone has said to me that it's not our house so don't interfere" what do any of you think because I'll show any of you're comments (if) I get one.
      Thanks.

      Well the instructions with the shower say push fit is acceptable but each to their own.

      Where did you get 11.6A from, the current would be much higher than that even with the smallest electric shower. And what difference does it make how much current it is drawing to its proximity to water - Answer = None! If you don't really know what you are talking about, don't comment!

    Why are these so popular in the UK, don't you guys have natural gas mains and infinity systems?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 років тому +3

      Yes we have natural gas and some showers are fed from the boiler. But electric showers are still common place and by having one of each like me, if your boiler breaks you can use the electric shower instead. Thanks for watching.
