My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on UA-cam.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!
This is awesome, I bought all 3 parts immediately after watching this. For me the built-in audio in the RX100v isn't terrible, but there are times where I must be accidentally covering up the microphone or something and it sounds like absolute garbage. Figure it would be better to just invest another 150 bucks and not have to deal with this anymore. Thanks for the recommendations.
Again we get closer to your world Ted. Love these kind of videos where creativity is also about thinking out ways for tackling problems and finding solutions - Solutions that are adapted to your (our) needs.
Sometimes you don't have to compromise with what you've got, ,you can take it to a next level. Many DIY solutions exist, so why not put our hands into them or try adapting it to your own needs.
Here you have created a great audio kit, very light and small, gotten a nice rig for mounting these ergonomically for one precise goal - getting quality audio. We saw your thinking process and you give us motives to personalize our own gear for our specific needs.
Would love to see more of those Ted!
I'm so glad I found this video...I have the RX100 IV and was debating buying another camera with a microphone input for starting my youtube channel...but you changed my mind. What a versatile & inexpensive solution to get me started with video. THANK YOU
I was looking for solutions to getting a point and shoot with decent audio, since none of them have external mic options. This is a good minimal size and cost effective way of fixing that problem. Great idea and exceptional video explanation.
Thanks for sharing
I just love the way you speak. I've been watching you for a few months now!
Nikocado Avocado Ted is not only a Photographer, He is the reason that GQ started publishing. Truth. 😊
really? what did he do?
Ok, I think my comment was sort of being tongue in cheek, but honestly, he is like a photographic emissary with his podcast, and he is like a showman of sorts, and he could probably be on the cover of GQ without too much man makeup. 😋😊
Nikocado Avocado yhh
You are friggin' unbelievable! This is one of the most amazing demonstrations of the evolution of a technical solution I've ever seen. Just BRILLIANT!
You are a GENIUS! I have been searching everywhere on how to create a rig for a compact camera. and finally found your video.
This is amazing.
Man I can't explain why I love your videos so much! Keep up the super great work!
I was same as you in 2016, I love my mark 4 so much... Now I am using Alpha 7M2, but doesnt have 4k ability... and I really love slow motion of RX100...
Thank you! Every time i watch one of your videos i learn more and more. You pretty much answer the questions before i can even ask them. This is super helpful for a starting photographer.
thank you
This is great, Ted, and you are brilliant. Lusting after an RX100, just got a Drift Ghost S to tide me over and am looking at the Rode Micro... Just can't believe nobody out there has hacked a 3.5mm jack into one of these Sonys... all the gubbins is in there. I've spent months looking for a 1930's Leica that HASN"T had a flash synch added at some point!! A drill and a soldering iron - it can't be that tricky. If any upgraders have an older model they'd be willing to try it out on, I'd be eternally grateful if it can be made to work.
Hi Ted,
I've watched this video many times because I own the Sony RX100V and the Rode Videomicro. But they are were purchased for different purposes. But I love this run and gun rig you made. So I decided to get the Zoom H1n and it has done wonders for me! But recently I was gifted the Rode Wireless Go and with this setup, not only it is lighter (I normally use a Sony a6400 setup) and much better sound quality but very packable when I vlog and travel. Thank you for the inspiration!
SUBBBBBEDDDD! You, sir. IS COOL!
Most reviewer clearly failed to point out the important notes but you, not only brought it up but also sorted them out. Very nice!
I built this and wanted to add a quick thing about the Zoom. It's a great little recorder, but the body is plastic and when I screwed it in I did it too tight and it killed the threads on the thing. What I ended up doing was going to my local store and buying like a 1/4" female adapter and then taking apart the zoom I drilled a hole big enough to fit it and then glued in in there. In addition I picked up a little gasket (like on you have in your bathroom faucet and put it on the screw before screwing it in (compression). It's pretty tight and works great.
The only beef I have with the Zoom is that you have to hold it down to turn it on, and that gets annoying really quick (on, record, off. On, record, off).
Also, the led readout is on the bottom of this setup so you gotta flip the camera to see if it's recording. I'll try to flip it so the mic is hanging instead on top.
Very clearly put, in every way-thanks. I just bought the Sony HX400V plus the little Sony ECM-GZ1M microphone which simply goes onto the hotshoe-brilliant, no wires and gives me a super set up for most situations and it all fits in a small case no problem :-)
Hey Ted, check out the SmallRig RX100 cage. No need for all the plates, etc. Mount a recordable shotgun like the Shure VP83F right to the camera cage. Very enticing.
Just came back to this video for reference. Another brilliant video thanks for this! :)
I have been rocking a Canon 1000D since I was 16 and learning about photography. It was pretty good for the travel photography I used to do and it's now showing it's age. It has never been able to take video though so I used to resort to my phone. I am a student so not a lot of money, meaning this kind of set up might work for me if I can get my hands on a cheap mirrorless to replace my veteran camera.
I used to go to festivals with a zoom H1 in my pocket and lav mic clamped on my shirt and it gave me some decent audio with my Canon G7X. It's a hassle though, and I look forward to getting a camera with an actual mic jack soon, and probably that cute little mic you used today ;) Although there's only 1 left in Canadian amazon, and I bet someone bought it before I finished typing this sentence lol.
Great Video! I love how detailed you got with design and the before after samples. You got a new sub my friend. Keep up the good work!
Why don't people do reviews and ideas just like this. EXCELLENT ... my god. Perfect
Subscribed. I just got my Sony RX100 V today and LOVE IT!
Some great tips there. I've assembled a similar rig for my Sony RX-100 III and it works great!
Tried it. Really annoying for travel vlogging and syncing up. Alright for vlogging in a studio. But then may as well get a bigger camera with a mic input. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for this video! I've only just started my photography channel and though I already had a Sony RX100M4 I wasn't really getting good audio....until now! I've just published my latest video and thanks to your recommended rig the audio quality of my video has increased significantly!! I also found your video on audio syncing very useful and found syncing the audio from the Zoom in Adobe PP CC easy. So thanks again. I've got a long way to go with my channel, but I have at least now made a small improvement in the overall quality.
I think a lot of UA-camrs do make their videos with this kind of dual system. I make videos outdoors a lot and I have tended to put my trust in a headworn microphone connected to a small field recorder (I use the Tascam DR22WL but I know a lot of people prefer Zoom and the H1 in particular). My thinking was by keeping the sound unit on me is the best option as then the microphone is as close to me as I can get. I have therefore steered away from fitting a shotgun. This suggests that I should rethink that. Lavaliere microphones are fine for when you are not moving but as you say the rustle that comes with movement isn't great. That is why I went for a headworn microphone. It wasn't cheap but I have been very glad of it for the last 18 months or so.
I'm going to buy that camera. I wish you built the whole thing again and I will happily buy it!
I had this idea in my head a few weeks ago, But i felt it was going to take more effort in post.also wasn't sure which mics to purchase, seeing as you went through the trouble to test these and they sound great. I think I may have to try something similar, thanks!
I’m impressed with Rode Video Micro. The spread is an advantage in some situations because it’s more forgiving than longer shotgun mics. I mostly use it on my iPhone camera rig (on top of an iographer case) and I’m experimenting with using it on a homemade boom. It’s a great cheap mic that will yield professional or near professional results even in the hands of an amateur.
This helped me a lot. I have the Canon M100 and just ordered the H1N and the rest of gear you recommended
This is brilliant, I’ve tried setting up a studio setup like this with the h1, but like you said the audio was bad. I’m going to do this with my canon G7x 100%, thank you
Thanks $1m, super helpful, very complete. Adaptation: That Manfrotto head is heavy as a pig. Use Joby with ballhead instead (I'm using a light point & shoot camera). You enlightened me about the giant world of rigs and brackets.
Ted, I really enjoy your content and I love my RX100 M5. The Sparrow Mach 1 has been added to my camera bag. Keep'em coming.
Thank you so much for describing very well the features of the machine and how to get sound from the camera
I love this video. Super nerdy AND informative.
This is excellent. What a wonderful low-cost setup that I can use with about any camera. Thanks for sharing this!
I love "behind the scenes" type vlogs. Keep up the great work!
Lets see which will be the first company to release a point and shoot with similar quality to the sony rx100 but with and external mic input. Take my money!! lol
i'm so excited to put the whole thing on a zhiyun gimbal ....it seems so crazy but i think it should work. thank you sir
let me know if this works for you! I'm interested to see how a zhiyun gimbal handles all this.
Interesting experiment. Keep in mind the additional weight and the shift in the center of gravity. Let us know how it goes.
Just Wow me any luck?
Great information . . . love this idea. Fuji have mic inputs on their APSC compact, but without in body stabilisation it's not deal for vLogging. I chose the Sony RX100v for this reason knowing I may have to sort out the audio in post. You can't really muffle the inbuilt mics on the Sony because inputs are too close to either side of the flash. Your rig sounds very nice :)
The hardest part is the audio sync. Could you please teach us how to AUTO sync audio with the footage from the sony camera? (Auto sync only, exclude manual sync, because I will have more than 100 clips) Thanks a lot.
PLEASE someone answer this
I agree, someone please get on this for us!
Yeah that's what i was wondering the whole video!
Simplest solution,do a clap sync prior to every shot,it's not perfect but it will do for most cases
sunnyspeed studio For double system recordings, check out Plural Eyes by Red Giant.
Done. Few improvements pending but the setup already looks great. Thanks!!!
SO helpful. Thank you so much. Just got the Rx100V and need good audio! You rock.
Good stuff! I have a Sony NEX 3n and have the same issue. I'll give this a shot!
I just found your channel last night and I really appreciate what you are doing here! The lessons, challenges, and tech reviews are great. As an Imaging and Digital art college major graduate with a minor in traditional photography (medium format 2 1/4 Mamiya primarily) ...almost 20 years ago, with some old school AB roll video studio training and early Photoshop, Premiere, & After Effects, I think your channel is so awesome! I became a software developer after college, but I'm now ready to get back to the creative visual side. I've watched a number of your videos today and you have gained a new loyal subscriber!
I love this setup you put together with the RX100 and external mic system. As I've been getting back into video, I really love the new gimbal footage. I was curious if you've put this rig on a powered gimbal or if you have any recommendations for doing such a thing. You have solved the audio issue with the RX100 and I'm 100% on board with the external mic setup. The last thing I want is that buttery smooth gimbal setup paired with this. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Thank you for sharing this audio setup Ted! I been getting terrible audio on my vlogs, so hopefully this will help me out a bit.
Hi, Interesting video as are the many viewers comments. Seems to me it is a good creative solution. As you say, will work with other compacts that stupidly don't have the mic input (really annoying). Am currently thinking of buying Sony RX100 IV and already have Lumix LX100 and Canon G5X. Why so many compacts??? - None of them quite do it all and the mic input is the biggest irritation. so for me it is an interesting solution. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this idea! I had the same problem and, after watching, it is now solved! Will be ordering using your Amazon affiliate links---because you deserve the proceeds! Thank you!
Would be interesting to see the distance of the camera to you. The closer the better of course, but that is the opposite for the camera, I always try to have 35mm as a minimum, but that probably will be too far for the rode mic, or is it not? I have tried so many things for quick setup in capturing sound, so thanks for sharing this, Ted !
Perfect timing... I just ordered a sound recorder before I came across this video. Not the H1 though. I'll test it but if it doesn't work right I'll know what to try next :-)
Hey, Ted. You said you were going to show us how to EQ this in post. Did I miss that?
Just getting into photography and I really liked this video, helped me a lot, thanks!
Subbed and liked , You have saved me going through the process of illumination ..thank you
Great Video! i wanted to find a way to make my audio better on this camera now i found one
Good video, and the umpteenth proof that to get decent audio with the rx100 series, you need a much clunkier, bigger setup than you'd need just by using the exact same mic with a much bigger sensor camera, better controls and a proper mic jack, with the additional benefit of completely getting rid of the need to sync in post, which is no small feat.
So Sony, I made the mistake once, but not again. I don´t want 9.3K resolution and 7376fps with nose hair detection if my videos sound like crap 80% of the time. So you either give us a proper mic jack (which I wouldn´t say is too much to ask on a f. 1200eur compact camera) or many customers will be spending their money elsewhere, starting with this one.
I have been working on a similar set-up for my vlogging rig. Its similar, but I just use a big arca-swiss plate on the bottom! :)
Do you think it's possible to triple mount a 3-axis gimbal on it? This set up kind of looks like a gimbal already. It will be insane if that could be done.
I use this rig but I added an Atomos Ninja Star recorder which allows me to film in 1080p without overheating the camera and capture audio / video in ProRes 422. I plan on getting a 4k Atomos recorder
The Zoom H1 captures better quality audio than the Rode VideoMicro.
I have a similar setup, and switch between using the H1 and VideoMicro. I really like the sound from the H1; it's a high resolution recorder that picks up a lot of rich ambient sound. So, it's not surprising the H1 picks up a lot of handling noise. It's designed to work on a dedicated mic stand in a controlled environment.
The VideoMicro works best when speaking directly into it at close distance (~6 inches). It tends to pick up ambient sound at medium+ distance, which isn't really pleasant. But, the VideoMicro picks up a lot less camera handling noise, which makes it easier to use than the H1.
The take away from Ted's video should be, to use the right gear for the right job.
Thanks for your hard work and great informative videos Ted ! You've earned a subscriber today and I will be supporting and following your videos :) I learnt a lot from this video (newbie friendly). Merry Xmas to you in advance!
Great video - I'm also going for this setup. One question though: Why not put the H1 on the top and the mic below it? That way you can see the H1 screen (and record light) more easily.
Always wondered if the Rode VideoMicro worked on the Zoom H1 without a TRRS to TRS adapter. This set up is exactly what I've been looking for, for my G7X Mark ii. Thanks!
TRRS is for inputting to a phone (which has a TRRS conector. The mic itself will work with standard connector going into standard 3.5mm input, so no need for the adapter if plugging into the zoom.
Love it, Ted. You're making me really want to upgrade my 100III.
HI. I wanted to get the Sony RX 100 M3 and use a lavalier microphone for the audio. Is it worth it? Or should I go with a DSLR and an external mic? I want to start a youtube channel and at first I don't think so much gear would be needed.
Popa Silviu RX 100 m3 doesn't have an external mic jack, so you can't plug anything into it. If you want to start a channel, just start shooting with an iPhone and see what you can do. Don't let the gear hold you back.
I love the resourcefulness, but it's a bit of a Rube Goldberg contraption. Notice he chose a shotgun Mic with no battery- very smart. Synch in Premiere not hard, I do it all the time for various reasons.
Have a look at the Tascam DR-10L,it may be an option.Interesting video and i have to say the Rode sounds great.
This was really good and so creative.
Every camera system involves trade offs. Clever you for making a deficiency into a positive the way you did. I'm now wondering though... trading off the other way for run and gun video with external mic port, how much size and weight to I have to take to gain that port? The RX100V and the GX7II are small and both have the fully articulated screen you can flip for vlog. I'm now wondering which cameras keep that, stay small but have that port.
Brilliant advice and knowledge packed into this
I've got a similar setup for couple off months now but it is not great. 1. While filming some parts can come loose easily. 2. You have to sync the audio with every shot 3. It is not easy to put this in a backpack. I have to rebuild or disassemble the whole setup every time it goes in or out my backpack. 4. Now I still wanna buy a camera with a mic input....
Another great video. I've been wanting to get that same setup, Zoom H1 and Rode Videomicro. Great combo.
Love your videos! I'm using your tips to develop a nice, lightweight portable rig that we can travel with. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Hello Ted .. Thanks to you .. I made the same set up .. albeit with one change and that is i m using Zoom H1N .. rest remains the same ... thanks so much for the above video and sharing with us
Great setup man. Quick question: What kind of setting do you use for the audio levels? Automatic or.. ? Thanks Ted for making this video. Cheers :D
I went for an interview and had to give a presentation... I talked about how the old Nat Geo saying was that there are plenty of photographers but not enough ideas....but today..I tied that to Casey's saying that there are plenty of ideas but not enough people executing them.. No excuses and stop waiting for permission...go do it now.... that's what I got from Casey...and ever so often an edit that made me reverse to see how he did it.
I have similar gears as yours. M5a, Boya mm1 but a sony ICD-SX2000 recorder. I can't think of any cheaper solution like the one you are using. If money is not a concern, of course... SmallRig
BTW, thanks for showing us your thinking process.
My kingdom for a pocket camera like the Sony or the Canon G7X that has a cold shoe and a mic input. It can't be that hard, can it?
That would be the dream
I am dreaming of it every day ;). Sooooooonnnn (i hope)
Dan & Jen Nevada And a touch screen too
Canon EOS M6
I must be missing something Ive watched this like 5 times how did you mount the mic and the recorder in one spot anyone please answer this question
I do record the audio to a ipod touch with the rode rec app. I guess you could take a ipod nano too, to reduce the size of the whole rig even more. :)
mrharpman I *think* Rode now has a shotgun w built in recorder. So 2 devices instead of 3.
Did you have the wind filter set to ON on the rx100? I found that took far too much low end out of the audio and still didn't really fix any wind sounds.
The Rode microphone definitely sounds better, but it sounds very flat compared to the Zoom since the Zoom records in stereo, and the Rode only in mono.
I'm looking into making a rig similar to this...actually, you have links for everything here, so I guess I'm gonna make the exact thing.
This has solved a very big problem of mine! Thank you so much!
Love the videos learning loads, totally going to pimp my rx100ii and my videos
I am thinking of moving up to 4K for my Vblog; would you recommend this or the a6300/6500?
I dig the ingenuity! Thanks for the tip and the comprehensive video.
innovative! I use all of that, in different configurations in my video. I am going to try that as well! Thanks.
How about mounting your smartphone with the rode video mic me (directional mic for smartphones) mounted next to the rx100 or a lavalier mic into your smartphone in your pocket?
My setup is with the vello bar a mic that I plunged in the camera and a lighting thingy
Off memory you can fix the H1 issue by setting the audio levels so they don't automatically hunt for sound when you stop talking
what you mean?
setting on the back. i forget what it's called because it's not in front of me. i believe, "noise leveling".
really enjoyed your video, very helpful and a great little rig
This might be a dumb question since it seems like the easiest solution but are there any cable adaptors that could hook up to the micro usb plug in the camera with an aux in the other end to hook up the external mic?
If only there's a pocket camera like the Sony RX100 V, but with hotshoe and mic input... It seems like it's what everyone wants, yet camera manufacturers tend to put those features on bigger bulkier cameras which aren't as convenient and compact to use for vlogging.
Hi,
Like the RX100 V, GoPros do not have a microphone jack but I found an alternative for the GoPro. Instead of using their internal mic, I was able to use a micro USB microphone and it made the sound so much better. Is it possible for the RX100 V to receive audio through its micro USB port?
Andrew Chandler were you able to find out if this worked?
I called Sony customer service in USA and they said their ports if used for anything other than the intended use for RX100 series, would damage the ports. The guy said they tested it in Sony lab and the ports broke. So there's a major risk in trying the usb to mic adapters out there. No microphone, as HDMI is strictly output with no input into the camera. USB is for charging and transferring files from the camera to the output only, so no audio input there also.
Any reason choosing this over a mirrorless? I upgraded my rx100 iii to a gx8 for better audio and quality but I find it more annoying lugging it around compared to simply putting it in my pocket.
where is the sound equalization part? you mentioned you would talk about it.
It is interesting that so many doesn't even yet or give an credit for integrated microphones that Olympus has in its OM-D cameras and Panasonic in some of it models like GH4.
The microphones has far better quality than any Canon or Nikon models or likely Sony has. Olympus does one of the best industry microphones for an audio from dictation recorders to an everything.
And I once tested the sensitivity of older OM-D model and it was capable to capture clean not distorted swan songs from a 1.5km distance. A motorcycle from a 5-7km distance where you can recognize all the curves and straights of road so you know where it is driving and very low frequency ice cracking and water movements under over from a 400m distance that you can barely hear yourselves.
The Olympus mics needs just an added wind cancellations for windy situations but otherwise they very likely are best in industry for the cleanness and dynamic range you can get. That is one reason why I stopped using Zoom H1 and H2n for audio mainly. I take H2n only when I need an off-camera audio or 2-4ch surround or if I need to use its center mic to focus mono without shotgun.
Wouldn't it be better to place the video micro below the zoom h1? to be able to see the levels and if you're peeking.
Cool little rig, I have to say that I've been using my rode mini, and it's great. I run it to the a6300 (which has a mic input) but isn't as nimble as your RX. Also, not sure if you;re a final cut guy, but the latest version makes syncing external audio from different sources a cinch. Great video's as always...oh yeah, ever done a cinemagraph? I'd be curious to see your take on that.
Possibly due to age of this video I won't get an answer but will give it a shot anyway. Have scrolled down and looked at a lot of the questions to try and find an answer but couldn't find it. Have found some people saying the Sony ECM-XYST1M mic is compatible with the RX100 from version 2 onward. Could you please confirm/deny the truth of this. Thank you. Love the channel
I loved the video thank you - I have a Sony RX100 iii . What would be the difference with your rig using the iii instead of the V?
Thanks for the video. Is there no other way to connect an external microphone to the sony rx100 IV?
Very interesting, Ted. Like your work.
