    Very helpful thank you. However shooting 24fps and FCPX with 23.98p setting, my video renders out at like 10fps when I upload to youtube and have been getting a lot of negative feedback about the frame rate. I'm not sure what caused this other than 24fps so I switched mine back to 30fps.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      I appreciate the kind words - I'm not sure what's causing that (some of my videos are 24fps and appear to play properly), but happy to hear you have a solution. In general, my recommendation is to use 30 frames for posting to youtube - 24 is a specialized frame rate for cinema.

    Excellent review. It's amazing how much work and talent have been put into this video, how much super useful information is packed in every few seconds, and at the same time, how gracefully everything "flows" and how well narrated it is. A pleasure to watch. And, of course, I have learned a lot things I was not aware of. Congratulations and thank you!!

    Thank you! In trying to decide between the Sony RX100 V and the Canon G5X, I have watched literally dozens of reviews of this camera, and yours is by far the most detailed and comprehensive. You discussed, demonstrated, and explained several features that I have never seen mentioned in any other review of this camera. This is the way a review should be done. Subscribed! P.S. It was a really tough decision, but I went with the G5X, mostly for the touch-to-focus, easier access to manual controls, and the dedicated optical viewfinder/hot shoe.

    I've been looking to downsize my camera equipment for a while... fell out of love with my DSLR mainly due to its size and the extra cost of lenses. I was the one on family holidays lugging around a big bag of camera equipment everywhere we went. Even though it captured great images I found it simply became a hindrance - The beach became a tactical operation of trying to keep sand out of every orifice. Now I've offloaded all my Canon DSLR gear and bought this little magical marvel... granted the navigation of the menu & settings is something to behold and get to grips with but I remember building my first Video editing PC and how much of a learning curve that was, or using Adobe Premiere Pro for the first time... it's all a case of practise. All in all I'm very pleased with this fantastic little camera. Thanks for a great 'no nonsense' review. Much appreciated.

    You have a new fan from this old review. I'm looking for an inexpensive, pocketable camera for casual portrait shooting. I just want a small body, VF, and fast lens... but it's been very difficult to find that in a package that actually feels good to hold and use! Thanks for the kind words - sorry to have missed the detail you were looking for. However it's easily found in the specifications for the camera on Sony's web site - it ramps from F1.8 to F2.8.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your kind response. Sorry, if I was not clear, what I was looking for is the information range on the entire aperture range, like f/1.8 or whatever the lowest no. to f/11 or whatever the higher no. I am not referring to the lens focal length of 1.8 to 2.8. Yes, sure, I'll look up at Sony site . Till this point in my life I have never used anything other than Canon and I have been a DSLR person so far 🙂

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 років тому

      The numbers I provided are the aperture - it is a ramped lens, so depending on the focal length it opens from F1.8 (when wide) to F2.8 (zoomed in).

    Great video! I asked myself after your video if you now would recommend this camera to a consumer? I own a A7S Mark 1 camera and it´s great, but i am looking for a small camera to have in holiday in a backpack, so it´s has to be lighter and smaller. I just want the possibility to shoot in 4K and i want to have a flip screen to see myself, cause i missed it so much in the A7S.

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

    Very nice and comprehensive review!
    It was also fun to watch and I love that you went so thoroughly in all the details, showing every feature and commenting about their functionality!
    The only thing I didn't get from your review is what is the camera overheating situation, when recording a movie in a lower resolution than 4K. How long would be the maximum time of filming and how low should be the quality/mode settings for that purpose...?
    I really hope you know the answer to these questions, because I don't seem to find it anywhere! I've gone through so many reviews until now... and I'm looking for a vlogging camera, that doesn't stop filming and cut my long sharing / Q&A / interviews.

      Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. I'm sorry that's not an issue I examined, and I've returned the camera to Sony so can't do that today. Based on my experience with other Sony models, generally HD is better, but when the camera is this small, overheating becomes pretty much inevitable at any resolution. If you need longer recordings, think about a video camera which is better suited to that task (and has other advantages beside). The Sony AX100K (ua-cam.com/video/SHSplI0x6vU/v-deo.html) or its non 4K brother CX900, both of which also have one inch sensors might be better choices.

    Thank you for the concise and clear review. Like many, I am interested in quality still images together with 4K video in a small form. I would like to use it to supplement my larger 4K video camera in situations where it is more practical. The 5 minute limit is disappointing, but it is unlikely I will be taking very many clips that long. If one was to record multiple clips in 4K that, say as an example, averaged 30 seconds with a 30 second cooling off gap in between could this be done indefinitely until the card fills up or would overheating and shutdown still occur at some point? How long did the camera need to cool off before it can be used again? Thank you.

      Tough call - I'd be happy with either. But if both were on the table in front of me and I was going to take one out for a shoot I'd probably take Sony - I'm more familiar with the menu and I have a certain brand affinity I can't explain. Hope this highly idiosyncratic advice helps.

    Very comprehensive review as always Maarten. I think I might be too old school these days Maarten as I got tired watching you go through the "MENU" options. I've been making photo's for 44 years now and I tend to go for the simplest camera I can find these days - KISS. @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Thank you for your kind words - but I'm thinking "maybe TOO comprehensive ..." Truth is, most cameras are simpler than ever - as long as you leave it in either full auto or full manual and ignore the rest.

      @gregt8655 7 років тому

    A very good review of a great camera. It shows the amazing progress that technology has made in recent years.
    The RX100 V is a very powerful camera and produces some stunning video and still images. For a pocket sized camera this is truly amazing.
    But the price is a major drawback.
    I recently watch Maarten's review of the Nikon D5600 DSLR. This was also a great review of a good camera.
    Where I live in the UK, I could purchase the Nikon D5600 plus the kit lens and one of the entry level Nikon Speedlight flash units, all for less than the price of the Sony RX100 V.
    The RX100 V is a great camera. But it is certainly NOT worth more than the Nikon D5600 plus lens and flash.
    Maybe someone else might see this differently than myself. But the RX100 V is too expensive.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      AAaarrgghhh - i hate when that happens - that there's some exclusion or conflict and no indication of what's wrong. Although it's not needed - just make sure that face detection is working. EyeAF should work in other modes - but check with AFS and wide to make sure.
      After that, when all else fails, I just do a reset on the camera (and it's a pain, I know - particularly if you've customized the buttons and Fun menu - so I keep a reference card for my setup). Let me know if that doesn't work.

    • @Nilz4FR
      @Nilz4FR 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. I understand the desire for a touch screen (you could consider the A6500) but not Slog3 - the bitrate (100Mbps) and the bit depth (8 bit) are considerably less than might be worthwhile. What specific situations have you found where Slog2 doesn't do enough? Do you understand the limitations of using Slog? They are not an all purpose solution by any means. (You might watch my video on Slog on the A6300 ua-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/v-deo.html , or my advanced video settings on the A6300 for details - ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html . I on the other hand, am hoping for a bitrate of over 200 and 12 bit or RAW - that would make all the difference in quality.

      I was looking forward to the DL series also. To save as much as possible take the RX100 I - I liked it a lot, there are two large prints on my walls from that camera. It's limitations are the lack of viewfinder and 4K video (not that any version has reasonable 4K functions).

      Thanks for your reply, so they're all great cameras and it's just subtle differences between them?

      They're not entirely subtle (that's why I mentioned the viewfinder and 4K) but in general, there's no reason to find the model 1 lacking for any task.

    An excellent review. Sony's crazy menu is enough to make you scream.

      I appreciate the kind words - while it's dense and complicated, it does offer a series of features, capabilities and customizations that are beyond what the competition provides, which makes their menus (and their cameras) simpler.
