Crayola vs Caran d'Ache Crayon Showdown! Comparing Cheap and Expensive Crayons - Which is Better?

- Just a bit of a silly one today! I thought it would be fun to compare my cheap box of 96 Crayola crayons to a much more expensive set of Caran d'Ache Neocolor I crayons. Well the latter are actually singles that I have made into a set, and I am hoping to collect them all eventually. So which crayons are better value for money? Which crayons will "reign supreme"? Watch my video to find out!
Please note this is just my opinion and you are more than welcome to disagree with me, so feel free to drop a comment below letting me know what you think. :-)
Crayola 96 Crayons: I bought my set at Big W but of course I can't find them online now! If you are in the USA, here they are at Target: www.target.com/p/crayola-cray...

Wow. the Neocolor side looks so much more vibrant! Fun video, and great spread to choose to color!
Thank you...most of the other designs were far too detailed for blunt crayons, lol.
I use cheap white crayons as a wax resist on watercolours so this is fascinating!
There is definitely a huge difference! Astronomical even😂 I remember loving to color with crayola as a kid and yes I loved the smell then too😂 the page done with the neocolors was sooo beautiful and the colors really popped and blended so nicely. I definitely want to try these one day as they look so much fun to work with! (Gosh darn at caran d’aches prices😂)
The nostalgia of childhood crayons is far more romantic than the reality of them as an adult, lol! Nothing by Caran d'Ache is cheap anywhere in the world. Not even in Switzerland where they're made! 😂
@@BeckyTregear just between you and I (don’t tell my bank account), I’d also love to try the aquarelles👀
Perfect! This is exactly the video I was looking for! I have a lot of nostalgia for Crayola but these neocolor one crayons look awesome.
I’m new to your channel and I’ve been binge watching and let me just say I love all your videos 🫶🏼
Thank you very much! ❤
Becky, thank-you for this comparison! The difference was HUGE!! I think the Neocolor I crayons are well worth the expense though - they seemed to blend beautifully! Thank-you for another relaxing video ❤️🤗👏👏
Thank you 😊❤️ I really enjoyed using the Neocolors...they're such lovely quality.
This was a fun video! I might have to put neo colors on my list….or maybe neo colors II, lol. I do enjoy water soluble mediums. The neo colors are beautiful and vibrant! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I like both I and II versions. I forsee some more videos on their way, doing some comparisons etc. 😁
That's quite the difference. So nice of seeing someone colour the Neocolor 1 in a colouring book. I've got the 40 set, bought it second handed for a really good price and they were hardly used. Thanks for the video, nice job.
They're really great! I'm glad you found some second-hand. That's a bargain, yay! I need to use them more - they blend like a dream!
Great demonstration and comparison. The Caran d'Ache set looks like a quality product.
Thank you, and yes they are really high quality to go with their high price, lol.
Great job to show the difference! Thank you.
Would be awesome to see close-ups of these images, however.
Yeah it's a little difficult to show on camera! One of these days I'll get myself organised and start posting some scans up online. 🙂
I am impressed that you did colouring with crayons! So many small things with those chunks. Well done.
I had a big box of Crayola a looooong time ago. I liked to use them to sketch on coarse A3 craft paper with. But colouring with them is likely not something I would try with them. Haven't got the patience for that. The Neocolor.... love those. I got half of the regular colours available and they are great.
It's the smell of the Crayolas which gets to me, plus their excessive waxiness. All over my hands, ugh! The Neocolors feel so much nicer and leave a lot less residue so they win just for that, lol.
Ah brillo thank you for thisd video I am thinking of getting the neocolor 1 .....they look like silk on the page ! oh nice .Thanks for sharing Becky Brillo video xxxx Happy swatching
Thank you! The Frugal Crafter also just released a video talking about the best crayons out there. I love the Neocolor 1's - yes they feel very silky on paper, really great quality!
@@BeckyTregear oh really I will cheak it out . Hope you are alright and not freaking out too much , with spring clean 🥰xxxxx
Glad i came across this video. I’m trying to find a crayon/pastel brand that doesn’t flake and blends well.
The Neocolor I crayons are great! A bit expensive though, but high quality. I haven't found better ones than these. 😊
@@BeckyTregear I’ll be saving up to buy a set 😌
Gamsol works great with the Neocolor I and they are lightfast as compared to the Neocolor II. And being able to use Gamsol or oms on them makes great backgrounds.
I'll have to try some of my Gamsol with them. 😊
I wish someone would make something very similar to the neocolor 1 but maybe use pigments that are not lightfast but still good for us colorists.
Like ones with super bright colours, like pinks? That would be fun...maybe there are some out there, but I haven't yet discovered them.
Those neo colours wow!!!! Have you used the neocolour 11 would love to see a demo on them if you have, fantastic music as always
Thank you! Yes, I will definitely be doing a Neocolor II review soon; I have the whole set of those, haha!
One thing we have to remember is the Crayola crayons were. made for children, the price is lower for the parents to pay. The Caran deAche were made for the artist so yes they will have more color and less wax than the Crayola. And, I will disagree with you on the SO called smell of the Crayola that YOU do not like. As I remember as a child and now as an adult, the smell brings a smile to the face bringing back memories of childhood.
That's completely valid and fine! As a kid I used to like the smell of them, but I seem to have developed an over-sensitivity to smell as I've grown older so it is difficult for me to tolerate anything with a scent. This also includes perfume, any cosmetic or skin product with added perfume...the list goes on. Crayolas are now overpowering and make me feel nauseated very quickly. 🤢
@@BeckyTregear Becky, though sad for you, I'm glad to find someone else with this sensitivity issue! It makes life incredibly difficult when a trusted product suddenly changes its formula, doesn't it! And other people just don't understand it , either, when I have to move away because of their use of perfume, etc...
I understand what you're saying, Alicia, but I think, if you watch the video again, you'll see that Becky covered all those points - _especially the one about the smell and her allergy_ (which I fully understand, having the same problem myself).
Also, doing a direct comparison is fair, because a lot of ArtTubers are using Crayola products on their channels and singing their praises without actually doing a direct comparison with Caran D'Ache, whether the I or the II variety, _or any other similar product_ . So anyone taking notice of those videos may well find themselves with Crayolas which simply don't work for them.
😊
I remember that I liked the smell of crayola crayons when I was a child as well... and now I can`t really stand that smell anymore, too. =D Maybe they changed the formula over time? anyway... I really enjoyed your video. Very nice coloring.
Thank you! I think as we get older our senses change, and what once was a nice smell is now really gross, haha!
It would be fun to use a layout and people print it then use whatever brand they have but in the same way to see where the differences and where the strength lay in each one of those brands tbh...
I like pencil colors
Beautiful 😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow! Who would have thought the differences were so vast.
Do you have any of the neocolor ll? I have a few but I don't use the water soluble feature. I'm wondering what the performance differences are between them. Maybe I should get the neocolor l's.
I do! I have the full set of Neocolor II and I hope to do a full review on those soon too. They are definitely better when used with water. They feel a little less waxy than Neocolor I, which feel more like oil pastels. 😊
@@BeckyTregear I have some of the ll's but have never tried the l's. Maybe you can compare them sometime.
What a difference, wow! I have the Neo II and want the Neo I to use as a resist with watercolors. Have you ever used them as a resist, and if so do you recommend them.for that? I am also interested if your watercolor brushes faired well against the wax. Maybe you can do a demo, hint hint 😀.
As always thank you for an enjoyable video and have a great weekend.
I haven't used them as a resist yet, will add that to the To Do list, haha! The Neo II break down easily in water and I haven't had any issues with brushes yet, though I prefer using taklon brushes with them. More videos coming soon, lol!
I use the Neo I as a resist for my watercolors. They work really well.
@@Athanais157 thank you for sharing that information, it is appreciated 🙂 Have a nice day.
Hi, Becky! Maybe a dumb question (or -two- even three!), but I'll ask anyway:
How do the Neo I's cope if you're colouring with pencils on the back of it?
Does the Neo transfer onto the facing page / protective paper?
Does the pressure from the coloured pencil make obvious marks on the Neo's or cause it to lift off if it does transfer as in qu. 1?
Sorry - I always have -needed- wanted to know the why and the how of everything (as well as the when, where and what-if's!) 😄
Oooh questions that I can't answer because I don't actually know, haha! I haven't coloured on the back of the page to find that out, and it didn't occur to me either until you mentioned it just now.😂 This is going to be something that requires testing! My best guess: Yes there would be transfer as I built up a pretty thick layer of crayon. I am not sure if pencils would make marks through the paper, but it sounds plausible. To help combat this I would spray the finished Neocolor piece with an oil pastel fixative to help prevent transference. In fact, I'm pretty sure I did that for this page! It has been a while since I made this video and I can't quite remember, lol.
@@BeckyTregear Thanks, Becky! For the pressure of the pencil, I wondered because although we usually layer with CP's there's still a fair amount of pressure over the course of the work?
I think the questions came into my head because I was showing my current student how to use Artist grade coloured pencils, and S is still struggling to overcome the habit of childhood, when we press down hard to try to make the colour deepen, and those long straight lines that stay visible. So probably a lot of adult colourists (eg those who don't watch ArtTube 'how to' video? 🤔) still do the same thing?
And of course that leads to the bee in my bonnet about the poor quality (and which aren't necessarily low priced) of most of 'children's art equipment' and the frustrations that will lead to a lot of them giving up... 😕So I won't go there, but will get on with my work! 😄
😊
Hey Becky, I enjoyed your videos. Love that you put Aussie Flair on your videos.
Thank you! I just try to be myself, which is a hybrid of Aussie and Kiwi, lol.
Few have any chance against caran d'ache... I have a small set of the soluble ones and it's my most prized possession! Nothing I own is remotely that expensive but way worth it :)
They are vastly superior and worth their money! But ahhh so expensive.
Wow I wasn't sure there would be that much difference between them.
I was surprised too! 💜
Crayola side of the page glows, they allow the light to play with the color. The others, though highly pigmented, look flat because no light is allowed through the medium. As an artist of light, Crayola wins hands down. They also work well with watercolors. GOD BLESS.
I love hearing your perspective! I'd definitely agree that the Neocolors are a lot more opaque. But they also don't smell, which is what wins for me, lol!
well you do you get what you pay for with most of the rt supplies out there.
You certainly do! The quality differences between these two brands are as significant as their prices.
