Caran d’Ache vs Crayola Crayons [Are They Really Worth 40x More?!]

  • Опубліковано 16 лют 2021
  • I recently bought some Caran d’Ache Neocolor i Crayons (also known as Neocolor Wax Pastels) to see if they are really worth 40 times the cost of Crayola Crayons. Crayola crayons are marketed to kids and Caran d’Ache Neocolors are marketed to artists, so my assumption is that the Neocolors are better, but let’s find out!
    Watch me test, compare and review these two brands of crayons; including how well they blend; how they perform on black vs white paper; water solubility and more. Is one Neocolor 1 crayon really worth a whole box of Crayola crayons? See my results.

    The Neocolors are most definitely worth it. I have both the 1 and 2 and I really enjoy using them. They may be crayons, but when compared to something like Crayola, I feel like they are almost like an entirely different medium. Both the 1 and 2 are products that I would always purchase again.

    • @justacatwhocantype

      @@nininepicarde6 I find that if you just use them dry then they are very similar. I have actually confused them before, that is how similar they are. I like having the Neocolor 1 because I can mix them with wet media without having them dissolve, and because I can mix them with colored pencil and blend them with solvent. So if you would like to do something like that as well, I'd say say get the Neocolor 1. But if you are planning on just using them dry, then I'd say it's probably a smarter idea to get yourself more colors of Neocolor 2 because they are pretty much the same when used dry but you have the big plus of also being able to use them as watercolor.

    There is no comparison, really. But it’s still fun to see you do a comparison just for kicks. I own a bunch of the Neolcolor 2, which are water soluble, and a starter set of Supracolor water soluble color pencils that I’ve had for almost 30 years and only began using them in the recent past and they’re still fabulous! This brand is pricey, to be sure, but they are some the best artist quality art products out there and Crayola crayons have nothing in common with them except the words “crayons” and “color.” I have seen some fun melting projects done with Crayola crayons, but never tried anything. I know about the Neocolor 2, but hadn’t seen anything much on Neocolor 1👍😀 Thanks, Jennifer!

      You probably had caran dache crayons when you were little. Why put down Crayola crayons??? They serve a purpose.

      @@Adeline9418 I really don't think she's putting them down. Simply pointing out that they are artist grade products. Crayola crayons aren't. Certainly crayola serve the purpose, especially for hobby colorists, beginners or anyone that doesn't want to spend the money on the neos.
      Don't be so defensive, it's not flattering.

      You can't compare the Neocolor II to Crayola Crayons as one is water soluble and the other is not - two very different products as a result. But the Caran d'Ache Neocolor I are definitely a superior quality to Crayola Crayons but much more limited in color options - wish Neocolor II came in more color options - they don't even have the same option as as the Neocolor II.

    Thank you for a super interesting video of the comparison of these two products. I watched it with interest as on Saturday this week Amazon will be sending me an 84 Neocolor 11 pack of Caran D'Ache crayons, I can't wait to try them out. It's my Christmas present to me as I'm a widowed pensioner of 71, I think I deserve it and living alone I can create art and colour to my heart's content. It's because of your videos that have inspired me, thank you so much for all the tips. Lots of love to both of you, love Dot x.

    Thx for showing off these amazing crayons and bring them in the spotlight. I love them and they sit in the shadow of their water soluble sibling.
    I sharpen these for details and keep the flakes for background work. Also, pencils like Posca and Faber Castell Black Edition go well with these, and even blend great.

      @@ColoringBliss I don't have them for long, so didn't do any big project with them yet, but did use them with my Neocolor I. They feel more like a wax pastel like those Neocolor I, and come very close to the result and laydown. That's why I love them already 🙂. They are even more like wax pastel then the Posca pencils do. Besides that, they are very cheap, and as I don't care about lightfastness for colouring, that's a big plus.

      While the colors are varied and pigments intense in most oil pastels they lack a lot of the control you need to color things in coloring books. They used to make ones that came in like a eye liner pencil that you’d crank out but they don’t make them anymore 🤷‍♂️

    Neocolor I and Hi are lightfast artist grade materials. You can create original art and put it on the wall without fear of fading. If you are only coloring in color books you do not need Neocolor, but you may well like them. Artist grade materials versus children's fun crayons, that is the point.

    I enjoyed your video! I am not a "paper artist" - I am learning to free motion quilt and I want some highlights / shading or added color. So I watched to see if I might use these on FABRIC! I look forward to purchasing a set and adding to my artistic discovery. (markers work allright, but I need some subtle coloring availability. And though my art pieces are fabric, they are for hanging or framing, no washing! Thank you for a thorough and enjoyable review of these crayons!

    If you had bought the Caran d’Ache from Dick Blick instead of Amazon they would have been less expensive and Dick Blick would have sent a replacement box due to the broken tip. And you would have been supporting an actual art shop. Even at my local independent art store they’re less expensive than Amazon.

    Those crayons are even meant to be broken to use the broader side. Of course it’s a bummer when you get a new crayon that is already broken, but honestly, the more you work with them, the more broken pieces you will get. I’ve got at tin of 15 that consists mostly of pieces, and I don’t mind at all. I use them for larger areas and to establish backgrounds, and add coloured pencils on top. :D They surely are a wonderful product and worth the price compared to children’s crayons.

    In general, when you’re buying comparing pricy/quality mediums, the best results is more assured with a lot of satisfaction,, instead of buying a lot of cheapest mediums in order thinking to safe money,. because you will buy less products and you will safe much more money at the end! It is maybe a matter of personal choices indeed, just like you said concerning the using purposes!

I just bought a small set of the NeocolorI and haven’t played with them too much yet, but wanted them for some water resistant effects with watercolor.     At the prices you stated;

    This is kind of a funny comparison. Like they're not really on the same level at all, they may be crayon looking but theyre not truly crayons, atleast as how we know them, possibly by definition too depending on its 'recipe'. Lol. But it does make me wonder if there are any other brands that make wax pastels? Hmmmm

      What kind of Caran D'Ache did you buy? They have a big bunch of brands (not as many as Faber-Castell though), several of them aimed at school children with the according quality. They are partly that expensive cause they are swiss, but tbh, their 'Luminance' pencils are the only ones that can overshadow my Polychromos (which I grew up with).

    • @miaomiaochan
      @miaomiaochan 3 роки тому +1

      I'm curious as to what aspects of the performance of these pencils you were comparing. If it's softness and ease of laydown, Prismacolor has a reputation for being extremely soft and easily blendable. But if these were your only criteria for determining which one is better, then your assessment is not quite fair. Caran d'Ache's lines of artist-quality colored pencils are unmatched in overall quality.
      Pigmentation, lightfastness, ease of layering, the strength of the core, build quality, etc. are just as important to consider. Sure, Pablos and Luminance may not be quite as soft or easy to blend as Prismas, but their cores won't break so easily and are always centered, and the pencils layer beautifully to create the appearance of depth and dimension to coloring pages and works of art.
      As for value for money, given how rapidly Prismas get used up - especially when their cores break - over time the more expensive pencils will prove to be more cost-effective.

      @@miaomiaochan While not an artist by trade , I enjoy using different media to color with. I am sure that Caran D'Ache appreciates you being a cheerleader for their brand, however, I do not go any deeper analyzing each tiny detail of a colored pencil as you obviously do. My enjoyment and opinion are strictly my own and needs no further scrutiny as to whether or not it is "fair " "Fairness" is not in my color world , so please be more respectful in the future of one's opinion that may differ from yours before leaving such a negative comment for which you are not informed. I just bought a small set of the Neo l crayons and I’m waiting for them to arrive from Blick. Can you recommend a good coloring book that isn’t small detailed designs? Also, do you know if they work best on a thick paper or smooth?

    • @juce5032
      @juce5032 2 роки тому

      Anything pastelly likes a tooth, so rough paper is best for layering. The thickness depends on if you are using white spirit or adding water colour, i.e. does the paper need to absorb a liquid, plus how many layers you intend to add, if you are using multiple layers, the paper needs to be strong enough to support it, if you're just doing a one-layer sketch, standard sketching paper will probably be fine.

    • @s.e.hebert7307
      @s.e.hebert7307 3 роки тому +1

      Probably depends on how thick the paper is.... I don;'t think you'd need 140# tho, but I don't think 20# copier paper would hold up well with even minimal wetness. Probably 65/67 cardstock is best. I am also looking into trying 40# laserjet/color copy paper, but it is very smooth, so you may want something with more tooth for this type of product (vellum finish).

    Thank you because I'm like "Aren't wax pastels just crayons?" You're the only UA-camr who answered that question. Neo Color 1s are just crayons. Other than when you used the mineral spirits, I couldn't tell the 2 apart. And from what I can tell, the leaves and flowers look different because you spent more time coloring with the Neo Color, probably because they're easier to work with. For my purpose, using them to draw before I add watercolor, the Crayola are fine.

      Thanks for the great question. I definitely think the Neocolor 1 have their place (especially for professionals...light fast, no crumbs, easily blends, etc) but are not necessary for everyone. They are a clumsy tool unlike a colored pencil that can be used for details. The Neocolor 1 would be great for backgrounds that you don’t want to budge when you wash over them or expressive lines added on top of a painting. So many possibilities!!
