  • Today, we are going through 6 different brands of watercolor crayons and letting you know what I think works best for budget, certain papers, art and adult coloring, and more. NOTE: I've done my best to cover every aspect, but watch the individual product reviews for more information specific to that crayon -- this is just a comparison of them. Also, while I do my best to stay neutral, obviously my experiences here with these products may play a role in determining which ones win what category.

    Hey all just a note! Please keep in mind I classified some of these that you may not considered a "crayon" a crayon, but it was just for comparison's sake. I did my best to cover every angle, Im sure I missed some, but as with all reviews, I really work hard on these, and spend a lot of hours creating these comparisons for everyone (this project has taken more than 40 hours) -- so do keep that in mind before commenting with anything negative. You may disagree with my ratings, and that's fine, these are my ratings based off my experience -- we are all very different. Each product has its own review, so do watch that for more info on it specifically, also, there is an entire playlist for this Watercolor Crayon Battle on my channel you can watch. Thank you so much!

    Pink you so much you have convinced me that my instinct with these was pretty spot-on and that I need to spend more time using my neo 2 instead of being afraid to use them up.

      They really aren't expensive. Look at the per crayon price in my battle -- quite affordable for a lightfast watercolor crayon.

    I use the Sargent Art Watercolor Crayons a lot and I love them. They have a coating on the crayon to protect it during shipping. If you dip the tips in water first and wipe them off, they won't be as "scratchy" on the paper. That's probably why you couldn't get the pigments off the crayon with the brush.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  2 місяці тому +1

      I'll try that, but even when I rubbed them onto a palette they weren't great, and that's pure pigment coming out

    Absolutely epic series, Cory! They'll have to drag my Neo's (I & ii) out of my cold dead hands, I've managed to get hold of 97 of the 126 colours now and love them all! Closely-ish followed by my lyras, but I'd prob give up my stabilo woodys if I had to! Great job for all the work you put in 👏👏👏

      Ah so you bought them before they got rid of the "extras" and went down to the 80s in total colors. Lucky!

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic not really, just over the last 2 years I've found them in random uk art shops and ebay. Honestly don't think some sellers don't realise how rare some colours are, so hot a few bargains! Oh and I meant Kory, not Cory sorry!

    Thanks for doing all this work, this is so useful! I'm just going to have to be honest with myself and admit that nothing but the Neocolor II will do. then again they really aren't that expensive for a Caran d' Ache product.

    Thanks for an absolutely fantastic review even though it was no surprise that Caran D’ache came in first! I really enjoyed learning the strengths and weaknesses of all the crayons mentioned. I thought I heard you say that you are planning a watercolor pencil battle next. I only have Derwent Inktense and the Stablio Woodys. I’m not in the market for more, but I’ll be excited to watch, even though I expect Faber Castell Albrecht Durer to win. Are you also planning to compare gel crayons? If so, what brands do you plan to test? Thanks again, excited to see more!😊

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Рік тому

      I mean I knew Neo would come out first, because I've already compared them against Lyra in another video, but it was still fun to test all of them together. Yes, I do plan to do gel crayons. Right now, I'm planning on comparing Distress Crayons, Gelatos, King Art, Marabu (maybe), Arteza gel crayons (for kids), ooly, and maybe a few others. Depends on my budget over the coming months.

    • @emptynestscrapper961

      Sounds great! I hope you include Marabou, and Prima Oil Pastels (if you have them). I’m not sure if the Prima belong in a this group because I don’t understand how these supplies are supposed to be classified so please excuse my ignorance. In my mind I think of them all as water soluble media and just play with them. But I sure enjoy all that you’ve shared😊. Looking forward to more!

    *HUGE* respect, Kori for all this work!!!!
    You're right to say that in the UK, Staedtler pricing will be different. On Amazon UK they are £7.70 (6.4c each) for the 12 set. ($9.55 / 7.43c). For the 24 set, £13.12 / 55p = $16.24 / 6.8c. Here on Amazon France, a 24 set will be €16.18 / 62c = $18.30 / 68c.
    I really like Staedtler graphite pencils (the red and black barrelled) but their Journey coloured pencils, for me, are not fit for purpose, because, having worked with children all my life, I still can't see why children of primary age (5 - 11yrs) should have to suffer with the inferior products marketed for them. I know people on very low budgets struggle, but I'd rather their children had just a 12 set which actually encourages them than a 36 set which will frustrate.
    Now I'm expecting flack in response to this from others, about 'Kids don't really care!' and 'Lots of people can't afford better quality.' and other such comments...
    *However* , having come from a very poor family, surviving on hand-me-downs from kind neighbours, our weekly tube of sweets ration from an aunt, and Dad doing all sorts of on-the-side jobs as well as a full time job just to keep food on the table, and in the present, now being on a very low budget, _I am fully aware of this!_
    But these big companies aren't exactly going broke, are they???? What they'd lose on producing better quality budget supplies for children, they gain on the sale of their artist quality materials. And more children would go on drawing and painting into adulthood, because they weren't frustrated by the less than mediochre supplies they had to use as children! Also, the better quality product lasts far, far longer than the cheap stuff - as most of us who have progressed from student paints and pencils to artist's quality can endorse!
    And of course, if better off relatives and friends would buy the nicer stuff as Christmas and birthday presents ....
    *Note to Kori:* I also don't believe in waste, and am glad, not critical, that your children will get to use what you are passing on to them - and anyway, they are far better quality (except the Staedtler, which I have actually used) than the products on sale in the UK and Europe which I'm talking about.
    Ducks below the wall to avoid the flak! 😄

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Рік тому

      I mean, the problem is if they make a better product, the cost goes up. Some companies are able to strike a good balance but not always.

      I think you should watch Emma Jane Lefebvre "Inexpensive vs Expensive Watercolour Crayons! I Think You Will Be VERY Surprised!" While Neocolors have advantages such as large range of colors and initial lay-down, I think you'll find your choice was a great one. Hopefully you made your experience better by wiping the white cast/wax before using them.
