    Great review/comparison. I love all three of these products! The Neocolors 1 and 2 are so much fun on their own or for mixed media with watercolor and color pencil, and the Neopastels are, in my opinion, the perfect oil pastels. I love their opacity and that they are soft and creamy, but not so super soft and smudgy like Sennelier. Really good products, I would always choose to buy those again.

    Excellent side-by-side comparison...and on 3 colors of paper! Thank you so much. Anyone who does this nice of a job on a comparison video deserves an immediate sub...and you just got one.
    BTW, I'm buying the Neocolor I crayons.

    I love Caran D’Ache neocolor’s ! They are so much fun to use and remind of my first art supply, crayons and I fell in love with drawing and coloring and 60 +years later, I’m still in love with creating colorful works of art. Thank you for sharing the comparison of all three Neocolors. Fran

    The really big problem is that oil pastels never dry, unless one uses a fixative, which then creates other problems. Unfortunately, even though the texture is nice and the colours are great, this makes oil pastels a no-no for me. I bought a Sennelier set and now am thinking of selling it, since I don't enjoy even thinking about using it, since it's very messy. Apparently oil paint sticks are a bit better in the sense that they do dry within a few days, but again, messy hands, paint under nails - or use gloves and give up the chance for the hands to feel normal while working. Frankly, I was hoping there would be somewhere an oil crayon with all the advantages of oil painting and none of the disadvantages. If you know of such a wonderful thing, please tell me too. I'll love you forever for it.

      Sorry about your frustration with oil pastels. Yes I will let you know if I find a better art medium! Thank you for sharing your experience! 🙏🏻

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 2 роки тому +6

      Unfortunately I think such a perfect medium does no exist at this point in time. But the closest thing would be Neocolor 1. They are also highly pigmented, opaque, layer extremely well and on the right paper you can blend them quite well with one another. With the Neocolor 1 crayons you can create pictures that do look a lot like something done in oil pastel, but since they are wax crayons they will unfortunately not give you that special texture. The other thing you could do is to try different oil pastel brands. While none of them fully dry like other media, some remain a lot smudgier than others. Sennelier is an extremely soft brand. Have you tried something else? Like maybe Neopastel or Mungyo Gallery Soft Artist Oil Pastels? Those are also really nice quality, but nowhere near as smudgy and soft as Sennelier. I have been using these two brands a lot, and I even managed to use them in my sketchbook without creating a huge mess. Maybe you want to give those a try.

      @gnostie 2 роки тому +1

      @@justacatwhocantype Thank you for the good suggestions. Since leaving that comment I too thought along the same lines, and things are much better now. Mungyo I'm not too keen on, since it has most of the disadvantages of Sennelier (soft and smudgy) and few of the advantages (Sennelier are masters of depth and nuance of colour). I could say the same about Lyra: nice but not very imaginative (it's only my opinion, of course). I now have Pentel Artists' (very nice) and Crayola (odd, but I like them quite a lot), plus I bought some wax paper sheets to 'hang' over done pieces, so the never-drying issue seems to be solved, at least for now.
      Will investigate Neocolor 1. I checked, but mine are all Neocolor 2.

      I empathise with your difficulties and am glad you found a solution. [I hate getting it all over the place, especially under my nails, so I wear gloves, but then I'm happy with that option. Perhaps partly because I only use my oil pastels when it's cold enough to wear the gloves without getting sweaty hands (about 8 months a year where I live! 😉).]
      To give you another option: if you add most oil paint solvents to oil pastels, then they will dry. It'll take about as long as it does for oil paint, but it does give you more options.
      White mineral oil (the ingredient in baby oil that blends oil pastel) doesn't dry, but odourless mineral spirits are apparently really good. Linseed oil also brightens the colours. And there are options like Zest-It (I've only seen it sold for use with coloured pencil, but was put onto it by an oil painter).
      If you want to go down this route, I would suggest that you chat to someone at your local art shop about which one best suits your needs though!
      Happy painting!

    First thank you. I was wondering the same thing. I like how the Neocolor products blend to green better than the pastel. I do wish you had tried using a solvent on the Neocolor I product because supposedly it can make a wash with mineral spirits or something. And having watched someone else do a demo, getting coverage may have to do with the tooth of the paper. They didn't have breakage issues.

      The Neocolor 1 can be worked with solvents, yes. I have done this using Zest-It (it's a blending fluid for color pencil) and the result turned out really nice, looking a bit like an oil painting. Definitely worth giving this a try.
