One of my past Guinea pig, Lucy had diabetes. We took her to the vet when we noticed she was drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot more. The vet put her on diabetes medication, it was a pill. I gave it to her by mixing it up with baby food. She did very well for herself. You would have never known she was diabetic, she acted just like a normal piggy.
Thanks for sharing this. I am glad the your vet was able to diagnose it quickly. May I ask how long did Lucy live? Do you still have guinea pigs? Thanks for watching. Your comment are always appreciated 🥰🥰🥰
@@GuineaPigFacts Lucy lived to be 5 years old. She never let the diabetes stop her. She lived up to her name (I named her after Lucille Ball) 😂 Yes, I still have 2 Guinea pigs, Coco & Pandora, I adopted them from a Guinea pig sanctuary. I’ve had a Guinea pig since 2002, I’ve never been without 2, they are just the best.
Vet visit is $100 in California , XRay is about $400 A surgery is $1K + If I drive further away I might save a couple of hundreds I used to be able to afford surgeries but not anymore as prices doubled In my experience if lump is not growing or causing any discomfort just leave it alone Surgery can go well or kill your pig if not right way but soon after When it comes to surgeries I don’t always listen to the vet They usually give you the best case scenario but outcomes can be very painful and shorten their life span if you didn’t do the surgery I always go for treating medically first If Guinea pig is 5 + years old J wouldn’t do any surgery Vets often try to use and offer any possible treatment but go with your gut on that Guinea pigs aren’t like dogs and cats and can decline very fast after surgery or have such a hard time recovering that is no point to make them go through this It’s my personal opinion
Wow that’s very expensive. You are right that veterinarian will try everything they can to save them but on the other side we have to make some compromises and take the decision. It is always very hard to choose between a financial burden and a life companion.
I feel your pain. It’s a fact that the vet is very expensive especially when you don’t have insurance. We have to bring Raven soon because she has a lump and they have to remove it to avoid further complications. Let me know what is annual vet budget. Thanks for watching 🥰🥰

Surgery can go well or kill your pig if not right way but soon after
When it comes to surgeries I don’t always listen to the vet
They usually give you the best case scenario but outcomes can be very painful and shorten their life span if you didn’t do the surgery
I always go for treating medically first
If Guinea pig is 5 + years old J wouldn’t do any surgery

I have 7 and they are expensive pets to keep
Vet bills are brutal
