- In this video, we will explore the most common sounds that guinea pigs make and explain what they mean.
Wheeking
This noise sounds like a long, high pitched whistle, or squeal, and indicates excitement or anticipation, particularly about being fed.
You’ll often hear your guinea pigs making this sound when they are hungry, so don’t be surprised if they wheek around the time you usually feed them, or when you’re preparing their food.
Interestingly enough, wheeking is a sound that’s exclusively directed towards humans. Scientists have concluded that guinea pigs in the wild don’t actually wheek at each other.
Chutting
Chutting is a sound of contentment. Guinea pigs make this noise when they’re enjoying the moment, or when they are happy and comfortably running around, exploring, or relaxing. Guinea pigs that are chutting are loving life!
Teeth Chattering
You have probably heard your guinea pigs chatter their teeth together. It may sound like a hissing noise, or rapid streak of squeaks. The sound of their teeth chattering is meant to serve as a warning to others around them. It usually indicates that your guinea pig is unhappy, angry, or agitated at a certain situation.
Teeth chattering in guinea pigs may also be a sign of pain or dental issue, and may be combined with showing the teeth in a yawn.
Purring
Purring is a low, constant vocalization that sounds like a mix between a grumble of a dog and a low purr of a cat.
There are two opposite translations for a Guinea Pig’s purr. Piggies may purr when they are happy, or when they are angry. So you’ll need to look at the context or situation to figure out what kind of purring is happening.
If you are petting your guinea pig gently, or feeding them their favorite treat, and you hear a purr, it most likely means your little pet is happy and enjoying its time with you.
Rumbling
Many people have a difficult time differentiating a rumble sound from a purr, but the rumble sound is produced in a lower tone, and is often accompanied by guinea pigs swaying their butt, or moving around slowly.
More often than not, guinea pigs rumble when they want to display dominance, or when a male Guinea pig is courting a female.
If you hear your male piggy pursuing a female while making a low purring noise, that is most likely a rumble.
All in all, this sound is commonly heard when a male guinea pig wants to woo a female and a female wants to let nearby males know she’s in season.
Chirping:
This is a very rare noise. It sounds like a bird chirping, and could easily be confused with a bird in your house.
This mysterious noise is not fully understood, and not everyone agrees on the meaning of it, but current thinking is that it’s a sign of stress or fear. It’s considered to be an alert signal-something that causes a guinea pig to be deeply concerned.
Complaining
This is a squeaky grunt noise, and it happens when guinea pigs want more space. Something may be too close to them, or your little pet doesn’t want to share their food with a fellow piggy. It could be that their cage is too small.
Now that we have gone over different guinea pig’s sounds, let’s talk about guinea pig’s body language.
Popcorning
Popcorning is when a guinea pig hops straight up in the air, sometimes repeatedly. Because of the suddenness of the jumping, it’s been called popcorning.
It usually happens when guinea pigs are very happy and excited. They’re having a good time, and literally jumping for joy!
Sprawling
Sprawling is when a guinea pig lies down on its side or belly. This position indicates that your little pet is comfortable, and feels safe with its surroundings.
Sprawling is a vulnerable position for a guinea pig because it can take much longer to rise up in case of danger or predators’ attack. So if your guinea pigs sleep this way when they are next to you, then it means that they fully trust you and feel comfortable with you.
Running Away From Being Picked Up:
Guinea pigs are prey animals, so their instinct is to run away if they feel threatened.
If you're trying to pick them up and they back away from you, it's not a rejection intrinsically but rather a natural defense. Just give your little pet a bit of time and patience and they'll enjoy spending time with you outside of the cage from time to time.
Fidgeting While Being Held:
This is often a sign that your guinea pig is just tired of being held, or needs to go to the bathroom. It’s important to remember that guinea pigs often urinate every 15 minutes because they have a small bladder.
Licking
More often than not, guinea pigs lick you to show you affection and love. They may even want to groom you to show that they care about your well-being. A guinea may also be giving you a lick simply because you taste good! You may have the residue of some yummy treat on your skin and your little pet just want to lap it up! - Навчання та стиль

I love to hear my two boys wheeking as I’m bring food their way. They are so excited that they greet me on their two back legs, trying to get to the food as fast as possible!

My friend gave me his 2 Guinea pigs and it looked like their cage hadn’t been cleaned and water needed to be changed, well I did that and made sure their home was nice and clean and they both have become so much more lively! I can’t wait to train them next !
So basically my guinea pig is trying to court me and complains constantly. He sprawls out on my chest and licks my arm all the time. He’s such a spicy fur potato lol
I've heard my piggy chirp a couple of times. It was always late at night when she's sleeping. Then she's always relieved when I check on her and give her some cuddles. She even gives me a purr as she settles back in for the night. I think that she was having a nightmare. One time she "demanded" to sleep with me. When I went to check on her she leapt into my hand and started weeking and wouldn't stop until I made a little bed for her out of towels and a small cat bed I had. She spent the night next to me on the couch cuddled up to my arm. So I definitely think chirping is a fear response. In this case from bad dreams.

My sister's first guinea pig used to 'weeek' loud and long, almost like he was singing, when he head her door alarm sound, just before she would walk through the door from work. Was so cute! RIP Patch.
The same piggie was once accidentally got left out of his cage in a small cat bed (he was given free access to this while somebody was there, but was returned to his secured enclosure while he could not be supervised to ensure safety.) We returned to the house 20 minutes later to find that he'd scurried across the room to use his toilet in the opened cage (it had been cleaned and new toilet litter added,) then wandered back to the comfort of his cat bed when he was done!

Noises:
Weeking - 0:26 excitement particularly about being hungry (like a high pitched whistle)
Chutting: 1:08 sound of contentment enjoying the moment (like a dolphin sound)
Teeth chattering: 1:40 angry, annoyed, etc. (sounds like a hissing noise)
Purring: 2:48 happy or angry depends on the situation (sounds like a grumble and a pur)
Rumbling: 3:42 lower tone...when displaying dominance
Chirping: 4:34 rare noise means sign of fear (sounds like a bird)
Complaining: 5:12 when they want more space or don't want to share food (sounds like a squeaky noise)
Popcorning: 5:45 sudden jumping usually when very excited.
Running away from being picked up: 6:07 instinct or natural defense.
Figiting while being held: 6:28 tired of being held or needs to use the bathroom
Licking: 6:46 shows affection sometimes wants to groom you or licks you because because you taste good.
Sprawling: 7:14 lies on side or belly: safe vulnerable position fully trust you.

I have experienced all of these. The chirping was so surprising and the girl looked like she was in a trance. All the other herdmates stopped and listened to her. She didn't seem afraid, but it was late at night. When I came and checked on her she settled down after I stroked her nose a few times.
Same one of my guinea pig starting chirping like a bird. It was so weird to hear it.
i woke up to one of my piggies chirping after dreaming about birds, its honestly such a weird noise.
When mine starts Wheeking I get scared- I felt like he was getting hurt. This video is very helpful :)
Wheeking just means they're either trying to get your attention for food or they're just excited. :)

I live right off a state highway, and so I frequently hear the sound of sirens from ambulances and other emergency vehicles driving by. So when I brought my first guinea pig home and heard him wheeking for the first time, I thought it was an ambulance siren! Then, when the sound didn’t fade away (like it usually does) I realized that it was coming from the guinea pig!

I once had a disabled piggie (almost totally blind and brain-damaged) who used his wheeks wrong. When he wanted attention his head would pop up at the front of his cage and he'd do a super moany wheek-if he wanted attention he'd let me pick him up. If he wanted feeding he'd kick my hand away and keep moaning 😂. In his own way he was the smartest pig I've ever known. That little bugger knew exactly how to play me!!

Also regarding chirping- I had one girly that used to do it when another was sick. At the time I had seven cages with a mix of pairs-boys and girls. Somehow she always knew when someone was ill and picked it up and let me know.
My guinea pigs "chut" the most after being returned to their cage after I clean it. It's pretty rewarding to hear that adorable sound after doing work like that ^_^
My piggy have tiny facts and even that's cute. They don't even smell. Haha

I never knew or realized how similar rabbits and Guinea pigs were, minus the noise of course. Rabbits being more silent but popcorning is just like rabbit binkies. And other traits like licking to groom or show affection are found in rabbits as well

i was holding my piggy while listening to this and it was so cute he started chatting and purring when he heard it and chattered when he heard the chattering. i’ve been holding him everyday and giving him extra treats, as his brother and best-friend passed away about a week ago. rest in piece Buddy

One time, my piggo chirped in the middle of the night, and I needed to talk to him to make him calm by talking. I think that this is a sound of fear/loneliness
Yeah Guinea Pigs need companions so they can feel comfortable. If not, it can probably lead to them being depressed at times

Thanks for a good video. I kept guinea pigs as a teenager many years ago and I unfortunately never really had videos like these to tell me basic things about my new pets However I watched this video out of nostalgia for my g pigs and realize I learned naturally over time their ways of communicating with me. I had three males in total, first an elderly and a very young one, and then whe young one was older and the elderly one died I got another young one. They had very different personalities and I miss them all, but I am very thankful for the lives I shared with them and believe that I had a net positive impact on their lives and I hope to one day keep guinea pigs again.

I watched this video and got so excited when i heard the chutting one. I was holding my boy today and he was chutting, i thought he was annoyed so i felt bad, but after seeing that i am happy.
I've only heard chirping from one of my piggies one time. it was genuinely kind of terrifying because i had NEVER heard that sound come from them before. i still have no clue what caused it, as not much goes on in my room, so there wasn't anything that i know of that could have caused them to be alert because of any sort of danger.
I loved when my baby Marvin would wheek and purr when my jewelry would clank on my metal dresser knobs. He loved the sound. That's why sometimes he would frantically run to his little bell and ring it. It made him so happy! Of course, he also would purr when he heard our footsteps, and that made me happy too. He was a solo piggy because I didn't know you should have at least two as I was a first time owner. However, I think he had a very happy life and knew I loved him. I miss him a lot. ❤️

I've had tons of piggies and I knew all of this already, but it's nice to see a video with the facts straight. My Herbert will wheek SO loud for his dinner, and when I hold him he licks my arms before sprawling on my lap to take a nap! He even closes his eyes. I've never had a pig THIS comfortable with anyone, so it warms my heart.

4:37 they can also make this noise in the middle of the night. Most likely because of a nightmare. I typically went to the affected guinea pig, cuddle with it to calm down (as well as talking to it, so that it knows that it's safe around me), give a bit of food, and after few minutes they should be fine

The example you show for "Chutting" is by far the closest example i have to a sound one of mine does.
I guess it just is chutting, but the whisper to chuttings speech, as its a lot softer and quieter.

Whenever guests come over and ask what is in the cage, I ask them to rustle the bag that’s next to the cage and they run out of their hiding spot and wheek like crazy

My piggy started to wheek to me after 2 days i had him. I think he realized,that i dont hear the sounds he is making,so he started to do this loud wheeking. I think they are intelligent and they adjust and adapt to us. He is doing teeth chattering when i am cutting vegetables when im cooking. I guess he wants to say Dont you dare to forget to give me some pieces 😄 He is always happy jumping after i give him some. And recently he started to do a new noise when i have him in my lap. He is lying on his belly, head up,looking on me and doing that sound. I cant describe it. But it is like he was speaking to me. It sounds positive 🙂
My guinea pigs are extremely happy in their home and so they never ever stop wheeking and it's adorable but the other one is not so vocal, but will sometimes do some really loud wheeking

I had a guinea pig when I was a child (around 10years old) ..One memory of her I will never forget is she was in my lap and I was rubbing her back, she did this little rumble noise that was longer than usual and kicked out her back legs (like sprawling) and just completely relaxed in my lap and let me rub her while I watched tv. Im 26 now and that memory of her still warms my heart and seeing that sprawling means that she fully trusted me makes it even better
This makes me feel even happier that my piggy layed out flat to rest on my chest yesterday :) I'm glad to know she trusts me.

A guinea pigs my little brother owned licked a veterinarian fingers while she was looking at him. She immediately knew why because she lunch was a salad so she gave a peice of lettuce to him. It was so funny but sweet of her to do that

Another way to tell if it's a happy purr or angry purr is the way they purr. In my experience, purrs with higher pitches are often signs of happiness.
