What did you say guinea pig safe not unsafe because I'm buying guinea pig but guinea pig already to death
My friend was going to buy a leash for hers but I was like NOOOOOOO
Leashes are okay as long as there are harnesses. Just make sure there is slack in the leash!
@@el50000 that's not okay either, it will pull on their spines, they also aren't meant to be walked like dogs, they are prey animals and startle easily, even with slack when they turn and bolt it will damage them.
@@el50000 That is a bad Idea for guinea pigs and also can be faitfull for guinea pigs

Both of my guinea pigs are really loud
When they make a high pitch squeak that usually means they are anointed

NOTE: Hamsterballs aren't safe for hamsters either
Thank you for pointing this out. I really appreciate it because all pets should be treated well and with respect. We aren't experts on hamsters but this just goes to show how pet shops can fool people into thinking products are ok - especially when they call them "Hamster" balls.
@@GuineaPiggles yes ikr! i’m so disappointed these things were called “hamster” balls, cuz they are stressing the hamster out & they can become serious back problems. ugh!
Exactly
@R.W Yeah... Hamsterball are basicelly torture instruments for hamsters. Hamsters have VERY poor eyesight and can easely run into things with the ball and get injured. They also doesn't have a chance to hide which is something a hamster needs to not get stressed. There are generally just a lot of reasons. So yeah, the more you know :).
@R.W Oh you're welcome! So glad it helped!😊
i plan on getting two piggies this christmas and thank you for all the information you told me ❤️ .
It's really good you're doing your research but have you thought of getting them after Christmas? Although some do end up in very caring homes there are sadly many who end up in rescue centres after Christmas. @@gr8cescale I wish I could get a better cage and friend for my 5 year old guinea pig, but my mom won’t let me. I do the best I can with what I have. She says that bigger cage is too much, and that she’s allergic, so getting another one who’ll outlive Gwiney by years is a bad thing. It makes me sad to see. We were gonna regime her a few years back but according to my mom, “it was too hard to apply for that”. I want her to be happy, but I know she’s not. Any tips on what I can do for her?
@@kiwiocmaker4216 Try getting her some enrichment and stuff. Like toys. (but do your research - no feckin hamster wheels o.0) I think that's the best you can do to distract her. Spend time with her as well! ^^
@@gr8cescale I definitely give her enrichment and spend time with her. At the moment I’m compromising with my mom on getting another guinea pig her age, and buying her a bigger cage myself.
Omg I had the huge hay ball and my piggy’s head almost got stuck 😭
NEVER AGAIN.
my piggy’s head DID get stuck 😭
At first when my family first got our first pig, he came in a small cage as mentioned in the video. My mom said that he was happy in his own cage, but then after a lot of persuading she got the materials for a cnc. We then built it under my bunk bed, and he was happier then ever. Next the thing we tried to do was reach out to a rescue near by for a second. Zero responses. We didn’t want to get one from a pet store, so we waited until someone put something up on facebook. The day someone did, we made arrangements to get their pig who was also coming from a small cage, and we introduced him to our pig, spike, and now they live happily in a 3x4 cage.
That's such a lovely story and well done to you for doing what you knew to be right for guinea pigs! :)
I recently got a guinea pig and a pet store cage. I really didn’t want one but my mom is wayyyy to convinced that the guinea pig is perfectly fine. She also won’t let her free roam :(
@@jessicas5759Id suggest putting together lots of links of vids/articles on why these aren’t good for guinea pigs. If not i’d strongly suggest finding it a new home sadly improper care can cause them to be depressed and they’re herd animals and need a companion with lotssss of space
Thx for this list I probably would have bought the metal hay ball if I didn't know.thx
That makes it 100% worth our time doing the video because so many people have reported horrible incidents with those metal hay balls.
@@GuineaPiggles hay racks are just as bad, one of my boys crawled inside his, luckily I was home and saw him do it in time
I agree that some hay racks are bad too but not all. The ones we recommend are safe - you usually have to spend a bit more but it is definitely worth it. Which hay rack was it that you were using that he crawled into?

A little tip for all piggy owners , get yourself some seed trays , fill with compost and put grass seed in to grow. 3 trays would be good , after a few weeks your have fresh grass for the piggies.just put the tray in with them and watch as they clamber all over to eat and feast, when finished, put the tray outside again to regrow in about a week, same as having a mini lawn .great for when the weather is trash and they can’t get out on your main lawn .
Brilliant idea!

Thanks this is so helpful! I didn’t to about the hay ball. Your videos always teach me something knew. On the Pets At Home brand of shavings, it doesn’t say if they’re kiln dried or not but it says something about odour control, do you know if they’re safe?
Thank you for you feedback Juliet :) It's great that you're learning from our videos. I just had a quick look and the description does say they're dust extracted and that they have natural odour control so they should be fine. This is great advice, tho I have never bought any of these products for my piggies. I dont buy their food from pet shops but order fresh food and a speacial mountian hay which is easy to digest
Thank you for informing me about the delicate Bones. They are so robust otherwise.
Thanks! I know the ball and wheel, but I have 2 balls like the ones in the picture, but I use it for veggies only under me watching for a little enrichment.
Have you tried the Haypigs treat ball? You can stick veggies in their and put pea flakes inside (we covered it in this video ua-cam.com/video/i4INSXLan44/v-deo.html) - it's 100% safe and our piggies, especially Mr Jaffas, absolutely love it!
thank you for such a good information
When i first got Whiskers, I didnt know anything about piggies. I got him all these things at Petsmart. He just sat in the ball & never moved. He didnt like the treats either. Tho, he/they love the food there... but i noticed theyll eat any bag of food. Even if its the more healthy ones. I took apart his cage & used those walls as doors & a barrier. For when him & Axl get into it. Or the rare times i take them out. Their cage is so big, i dont really need to give thrm roam time. Idk what i was doing at Lowes, 💡oh yeah i do. I tried looking around for better cages but i couldnt find any. So i figured if i walked around at Lowes, looking at things, I could come up w/ some idea. I found some rack things, or i guess shelves that ppl can prob screw into the wall. But they have side pieces that make them stand on their own. & Its strong & sturdy. Has bars just like a cage, so they can see through. I got four of them & pretty much just stuck them together w/ 🤔 idk what those things are called. But theyre used to keep things attached to each other. Plastic that goes through a hole, & the grip becomes tighter depending how much u pull it through. It can only come a part when you cut it. Yeah, those things. I put shower liners underneath & fleeces on top. Their cage is so huge, i could lay down in it & sleep there & theyd still have plenty of room. I want to get a 3rd male. 😁 Ppl say im crafty. 💁🏻♀️ It works. & Theyre happy. They never jump out & im pretty sure thats the exact reason why they dont fight hard.
Also, i dont understand how ppl think they stink. Well, ppl on the internet. Bc in person ill question myself & ask others. They cant smell anything either. I thought maybe i just got to used to them. Prob if i got closer, theyd smell like grass but thats it. But then i thought, they have so much space, itd be harder to accumulate smell bc theyre not as confined in the same small area for however long. Using it all the time. Whoever says they stink, idk. That seems more like a them issue.
I think there are many people who get guinea pigs who don't really know how much care it involves and all the little things that are so important such as cage size, having a pair, providing enrichment and the right food. It's so important to research first to decide if these are the pets for you. It looks like you're doing a great job and have adapted as you've learned how to care for these adorable little pets :)
I have a pretty small cage for my guinea pig and i she doesnt smell lol, i think people exxagerate. Im 11 and my parents dont Let me get a bigger cage or get 2nd guinea pig :(
@@genessispacheco1832 If you cannot get another Piggy for your piggy now or get a bigger cage, I suggest you get rid of them and let the piggy get a better home. As bad as it sounds, having a single guinea pig could make it depressed.
I have three guineapigs, and the reason I have never bought them a hamster wheel is because guineapigs are cleverer than hamsters and will realise there is no point of the wheel as it goes round in circles btw this video should go more viral !! 👍👍❤️

I wouldn't buy that ball for hamster either, looks very uncomfortable and it's both enough air inside. What a stupid idea in a first place.
We're not hamster experts but you are probably right - one thing is for sure, these are definitely bad for guinea pigs! It just goes to show the lack of care some people in the pet industry have - it's all about selling as much as they can to make money and some companies don't care whether they are right or safe for these pets. It's so sad.
@@GuineaPiggles I know it's terrible :( but to be honest pet owners have so many options these days to learn about their pupils, it shouldn't be excuse they "didn't know". Not in the internet era
I know alot about several different animals and yeah, hamsters shouldnt be kept in balls at all. It would be incredibly uncomfortable to them and it makes them feel the exact opposite from free. It makes them super stressed out. Most hamster wheels arent all that great either.
@kyumi Thank you for adding that because some guinea pig owners may have hamsters too so that will be really helpful for them. :)

My mom and I have been wanting a harness because my guinea pigs love playing outside but once one of the almost ran away but now that I saw this video in glad I didn't get a harness.
When we got our first guinea pig we got cedar bedding but it gave him allergies so we quickly changed it to mulch. Thanks to the early symptoms, he was able to live for almost 8 years!

I never knew that 2 males needed a larger cage. I have 2 males and they always fight so we had to separate them. The cage for the first one (brownie) is a 4 on the outside by 1 grid on each side, while the other (neos) is not in a straight line but has a curve at the end to fit my room. I don’t really know how to describe how many grids on each side is. Since I described brownies enclosure, does the way that I described it sound like the correct size?
Helpful Information!
Thank you! Glad it helped :)
I know this is how it works with rabbits but I’m not too sure with it about guinea pigs. Rabbits as well have a really delicate bone structures and cannot use hay racks because it’s making their head go upward instead of how they naturally Graze on the ground if you look at both of their mouths you can see that their mouth is pointing towards the floor. And with rabbits when they use a hayrack it forces a muscle that they never use so it can be dangerous also if it is a wire hayrack they also have to turn their heads and look up so I was just wondering if that was the same with guinea pigs :)
We're not experts on rabbits so can't comment on that but these hayracks are safe for piggies so there is no worry there. The wire hay balls are really dangerous though as they can get stuck and there are other hayracks that can be dangerous too. We only use and recommend the safe ones. :) You can check out the hayracks we use in our Hay video here ua-cam.com/video/I0h_WriLmh4/v-deo.html :)
Same for piggies, it also severely limits the amount of hay they get, they need it 24/7 as their teeth are open rooted and it is used to sleep, burrow, play in, eat, pee and poo.
Omg I never knew glad I came across this page thank you

So glad you saw this video before you bought it :)
My very first guinea pig was called honey : D
I tried to introduce a baby guinea pig that was a few weeks old in with the rest of the pigs from a bin with her mom, but she squeezed her way through the hay rack and almost jumped out of the cage. I waited a few more weeks, and she's doing great now.
I have one of those hay balls but I don’t use it for hay. I leave it so it suspended above the cage and put veggies like lettuce, celery, or peppers in it. My piggies can easily grab the pieces without hurting themselves.
I learn so much on this video
Can a guinea pig eat grass from outside?
Guinea pigs can have grass but make sure it's not contaminated with any chemicals or weed killers etc. Also, make sure it's just grass you're picking as other plants such as daisies and buttercups are poisonous - more about these here ua-cam.com/video/Rbb0W6hUyK8/v-deo.html. Also, grass clippings are not safe and can make your guinea pigs ill - you can find out more about that here guineapiggles.com/unsafe-foods-guinea-pigs

Curious on your opinions on oxbrow treats , I’ve heard good things about their Timothy hay but not much on the treats they provide .
Oxbow brand is great in general, their treats are usually healthy, like the pea flakes and such, though most the dried fruits is just better given fresh
OMG I have number 3 gonna remove it right now
The only thing I have for my guineapig is a salt lick but she is quite a picky eater so almost all the treats I try to give her she doesnt like. She just prefers to eat what she normally eats and even gets excited for hay (she is smol brained) overall I know she's a happy healthy bean so that's what matters the most. Not like she is digging it down she just nibbles it a little once in a while.
I adopted my niece's hamster who came in.....yes, a pet-shop cage! AND a small wheel and ball 😢. All went in the bin 😀. I set up a large home for him, he had everything a hammy could wish for. Buddy was already an elderly gent,(approx 15 mnths) but he was one happy boy who lived another 8 months. He passed away peacefully and stress free. He now rests in my garden 🙏.
It worries the life out of me that pet stores put profits before care! 😢
Your Piggies are adorable and you are another of my favourite people who are a voice for our Furry Family 😍
My Guinea pig lost her friend in august and we put her in a smaller cage a month or so after but she sulked so we put her in her old cage the very next day. She’s only now started getting back to normal and eating more and we now give her lots of food through the day. She also gets many cuddles and we try to keep her as happy as possible. We also have another lonely piggy who lost her friend in November but they hate each other so we’re unable to keep them together
You could put them both in one cage with a separation barrier (c & c square) so they can communicate and see/smell each other without getting too close to fight.
I can’t believe there’s guinea pig costumes that could choke them :(
When I first got my guinea pigs I got them a metal ball hayrack, and I was out with my friends but I had this weird feeling in my body and was like I NEED TO CHECK ON THE GUINEA PIGS and when I went into the guinea pig garage one of my Guinea pigs ernie was STUCK in the metal wires of the ball, I was so scared 😟 I think if I didn’t come just then he could have been injured or even worse killed 😭🥺
Thank you for this - it just shows how dangerous these hay balls are and thank goodness he was ok x
I have one of those metal hay balls at 1:58 for my piggies. It is very small and i can not see how they would get stuck in it. The metal bars are also way to close for them to get their head into. They never attempt to climb in or anything like that. Is it then okay to have one of those?
I would advise against any of these hay balls as we've heard so many awful stories about guinea pigs getting hurt or stuck in them.
I own a metal hay feeder.
I put it higher so he can't get his feet up, but he can put his head up to get the hay, it even falls out the bottom.
He has never gotten stuck.
One of my pigs is called piggles ❤️
also who would buy a guinea pig a hamster wheel? they wouldn't be able to get on it!
and omg the small cage no!!!!! I have converted my hay barn into a secure guinea pig cage. IT IS FIT FOR A PONY
I have the metal ball thing but I don’t use it often when I do I stuff so much any in and I watch them they don’t chew the bars as most the hay falls out! But yes I check on them when I use it x
