Sadly, I'm pretty sure the reason is that she was already in her mid-to-late 30s at this point, isn't conventionally pretty in the same way as Tanya Donelly, and their record company and management were angling for "sex sells," or at least "cute sells."
If she had been 26 and elfin-gorgeous, I imagine Belly would have been packaged more like Veruca Salt.

Growing up I was envious of the 70's and their lifestyle and music. Now I look back at working at a CD store with piercings all over and that super don't care tonality to my voice. I saw Tanya with Catherine Wheel as a special appearance, the Breeders I walked on to their tour bus, Frank Black I saw in tiny bars and had a special under 21 pass...It was a pretty cool time.
Instantly transported back to 1995, driving along with this blasting from the cars CD player. Still got the limited edition album book for King and I treasure it.
I've got it too, like all real connoisseurs!
I have so many memories of the sic jams by Belly. I've listened to them so much that they were one of the biggest parts of the soundtrack of my life back then. So many great songs!

love me some 90s girl bands. i can remember the day I first listened to this song and album. In the Navy sitting at Roose Roads in PR in the hospital barracks. It made me so happy and I knew I needed to get our of the Navy and live. TY Belly!
Navy here too. Started in Orlando in 91'. I was a regular at The Edge in downtown Orlando! Man those were the days. So wish I had the tech back then kids have today cause I would of had some outrageous videos!!

Hope Sandoval had that quality, although I'd say she is more like an opium voice.
