@@moimoiyoop Oh oops thanks for correcting me. I meant the typical clients that are like "ART SHOULD BE FREE" even though art should be charged for the artist's hard work and stuff.
@@9ightdreamer i was drawing peoples characters for practice who i kinda knew and i had this person practically harassing me to draw there’re character they asked it in a way that didn’t sound all that rude or disrespectful so i said i could do it but then i was being asked all day every day if it was done so now if i’m drawing for practice it’s all going under the fan art label so that anytime i draw a character it’s now much more separate from requests or "free commissions"
As a broke artist with depression currently living in an abusive household, it pisses me off to no end that the “emergency commissions” for Switch games, make up or whatever gets endless support but when i open commissions for my literal medicine for my mental and physical health, no one bats an eye.
Not gonna lie, I usually believed artists when they say an incredibly detailed piece took them only three or four hours. The pieces currently on my pages that I'm most proud of typically took me five days at a minimum to complete, partially because I have ADHD and some days I can't maintain a consistent focus past the four hour mark (which equals out to about twenty overall hours spent on single pieces, which I think is probably lowballing it a bit). I do have days where I burrow in with hyper focus when I'm especially passionate about a project. Ironically those pieces take me even _longer_ because I decided on a whim to add in a design element I'm not accustomed to drawing. I end up obsessing over getting it _just right_ and I'll spend, like, sixish hours per drawing session (time for self-care explicitly not included). My instinct is to give everyone the benefit of the doubt so I didn't conceive people would or could be lying about how long a piece takes them to do. I usually chalk it up to me having ADHD. Usually when I hear, "Oh, it only took a few hours!" I do end up feeling kind of bad about my skill level. I'm a hardcore revisionist and I usually end up feeling like I should be skilled enough to get lines and proportions right on the first or second go. It helps to hear that maybe, actually, people aren't always truthful about that number. But also how am I supposed to accurately gauge what is too long a time to take on art? Because I'm sure there's some things that I'm doing that could be done more efficiently to tighten up the time I take on aspects of a piece.
i completely understand where you’re coming from, and felt the same for a really long time. honestly, i don’t think there’s a consistent, always-applicable minimum of time that a piece of art should take, but at least viewing those “time spent: 1.5 hours” descriptions with a grain of salt helped me give myself more credit for taking longer. i also think speed will come with time - for some of my first industry contracts and commissions, I took 5-8 months just to finish a few pieces, which would now take me a couple weeks at most. as your comfort level grows with what you’re drawing, the time it takes you will gradually diminish - not to the unrealistic extent of taking a couple hours per piece if you’re dealing with ADHD and high attention to the piece’s detail (which i strongly relate to), you will see progress in time. the best advice i can give is to try to cut yourself some slack on how long you take with it - you’re not alone, and im confident that most artists (regardless of what they claim) are in the same boat, at least to some extent. ❤️💙
@@DuchessCelestia I do want to cut myself slack! Though I also want to at least start trying to gain some followers so I'm also worrying about how I'm going to handle managing the time it takes between uploads. I also have whole weeks where I don't feel up for drawing because I have an IT day job during the week days. The past few weeks have been really stressful. =w=;; I do feel though that slowly I am becoming more comfortable with how I draw so that helps a lot.
same, my adhd and other disorders is considered severe with heavy meds. and i always worry i have to make up for my "shortcomings". so i push myself and lie even though i swear i never to again because my whole actual childhood survival was on like. lying. like so many artists just are so two faced ig. sorry if i dont make sense my bipolar meds make me really fuzzy. like all i want is to be happy with my work again and paint made up foods and pokemon. like. also treating like some art so quick to do is weird cus its like saying a dude can get to alaska to florida in like 30 mins lmao
I spent 8 months of my now 1yr relationship drawing my boyfriend as the mandolorian with grogu and Grogu is using the force to steal nuggies lol. It’s not the best but it’s my best work ever and I doubt I’ll be able to pull something to that standard off again for many many years like it’s my masterpiece so far but yeah 8 months lol. I also heard of people spending YEARS on one piece either taking long breaks or just doing bits at a time and reworking them etc. i actually feel sad when a drawing only takes me like half an hour lol.
God, I also have ADHD, I feel this so much. I still would rather give people the benefit of the doubt because I've watched people draw much faster than I do, but I wish people wouldn't share how fast it took them to make a thing when no one asked, and it's probably true some people lie about it out of insecurity.
if we're talking about the rejection of critique, can we talk about people who get super pissed at genuine tutorial posts. Like when twitter bullied that one japanese artist who regularly posted in depth tutorials that even if you can't read it, you can understand the difference? also tik tok fills me with genuine rage. I super hate the trend where people make fun of "emily" who does recolors for beginner OCs when that's where a lot of genuine artists start out, or better yet, is just someone having fun!! wtf!!
yeah, that’s infuriating omg 😔 i feel like no matter what people do or say, twitter is going to get angry at it for being wrong somehow whether it actually is or not yes, exactly!! just let artists live and create without making fun of them, it shouldn’t be hard ;;;
I started out using bases on MS paint. One of my OC’s that I have was created using an anime base, she’s gone through a lot of changes, but she still exists.
Or just people getting mad for “not considering artstyles” in tutorials, especially when the tutorial is very clearly meant to explain basic anatomy/color theory/ etc
As a black artist, one of my most serious art pet peeves is "black people don't fit in their art style" or "their art style is pastel so it's okay for them to whitewash a certain character or person in their art." It's so frustrating to see people justify not representing black people well with dumb excuses like art style or pastel. I draw with pastel colors all the time, but I don't ever feel the need to color dark skin the exact shade of my own palm because dark skin doesnt "fit my art style."
People who make pastel artworks yet lighten the skin tones are stupid, *especially* because darker skin tones literally look SO GOOD with pastels??? Some pastel artists are just missing out.
The argument is also garbage because if dark skinned people don’t look good in pastel cutesy palettes then the same should apply to pale characters in dark and gritty colour palettes right? And yet there is so much art of pale people in goth clothes or dark colour palettes! It makes no sense!
As someone who sat with a friend and helped them color commissions to help them finish emergency commissions for paying for their husband's surgery, it drives me crazy to see the false red flags, too. I love sending a couple of dollars via ko-fi to folks who need it and commissioning when I can, but not when they claim they need airpods or something. Thank you for mentioning this; it's a legitimate frustration when folks label that as emergency for sure. Appreciate the honesty, but not the false urgency.
Okay so now question I found a UA-camr who is gaining views through giveaways and on her streams, there’s a donation counter to raise money for some illnesses or conditions she has. She’s trying to raise like 1k. Then she revealed she was buying a new Nintendo switch. Of which she already has FIVE. she says that as the switch will be used for her viewers, she doesn’t mind. Felt off to me but I’ve done a similar thing where I had to raise money for a new drawing tablet when I was kicked out and had no other way to make money besides commissions. Any of these red flags? For myself too bc I want to be a better person
@@cryingwatercolours they kinda are. Not for you, as long as you haven't lied about it. But to raise money for a ILLNESS just to reveal it's to buy a nintendo switch with you--cough cough--already have FIVE!? Imagine donating money to help someone just to realize they're using it to buy this. As long as you don't lie about it and say it's an emergency, then it's fine. Just be honest about it.
Dude, the "emergency commissions" one is annoying asf! I paid for art from a kid who had an "emergency"...it was them wanting no joke, animal crossing new horizons. Ironic lmao.
I think these people are very... petty. I did emergency commissions myself but for an actual emergency, my Apple Pencil broke and I needed to buy a new one ASAP. Not for a petty and vicious motive like this.
@@xepphir Is this a joke? (gen) I don't see how a new Apple Pencil is anymore of an emergency than wanting a game. Sure, you may see it as more urgent, but is it a want, the same as a game or a need? I don't understand how a slight exaggeration is petty or vicious. Sure, annoying maybe and misuse of a term, but vicious? How?
As a fast artist, any good detailed drawing I have still takes a long ass time, filled background with shading takes around 5-7 hours to a few days (depending on if I work on it for the whole day or come back to it every now and then)
@@DuchessCelestia yee don't worry ur not over criticizing lol. But tbh I think maybe most ppl are likes taking out the chunks of time where they aren't working on it u know? At least that's what I think cause I do that sometimes if a drawing takes days to finish, bec majority of the time is me procrastinating lol. So maaaaybe that's a reason?? Idk :'D
@@vixymix101 that's what I do when I say how long I took to make an art piece, I dont include the time that I took breaks. Alot of my art takes multiple days in total, but most of that is breaks, and without the breaks, it's usually around 1-3 hours, sometimes even less than an hour
I'm a pretty fast artist, but for just a character drawing still takes me 1 hour, at least. Without it being very detailed. I couldn't imagine background and significant detailing. That's gotta be at least 8-10 hours for me. Maybe a whole day or two, depending on my attention span.
@@DuchessCelestia my longest drawing took me 8 hours and I remember feeling happy that I broke my record, but also embarrassed that I didn’t take me 5 mins like I have super speed.
as someone with rejection sensitive dysphoria, thank you for mentioning giving unsolicited criticism!! having people constantly try to "help me improve" when i was a kid made me fall out of love with drawing
Same. I remember one time, someone told me my art made him feel like God put him on this Earth just to suffer. You know why he said that? Because I drew my OC, who was an alien tiger furry. That's literally it. He got all butt hurt because I drew a fictional anthro tiger 🙃
@@shigaraki2035 The most ironic part was that he tried to say my art wasn't valid because my character was a fictional species from a fictional planet.... But his characters were robots much like Transformers who have feelings and conscious minds. His role model was also Bob Ross, which, I'm pretty sure Bob would be against the slander of other artists for the type of media they draw.
I’m nearly 30 and just got into drawing a year ago (digitally- I can’t draw on paper) and every day I see improvements esp after a major art block- whenever I see ANY art I like- especially where you can see the effort, no matter how “bad” it is or the age of the artist I will always leave a “keep up the hard/good work you’re doing great” with a comment about something I like about it or something I think they did really well with in the art - I do this because 1- costs nothing to be kind and encouraging, 2- if you point out something that’s done really well or that’s the best part then that lets the person know “hey this method really works for you keep working with it” and 3- acknowledging that they worked HARD and put in the effort and time is giving them the credit for what they actually did and that it shows, that it didn’t magically appear from thin air. I don’t do well with criticism (I can take suggestions and stuff but I have my reasons for not being ok with criticism) I do best with encouragement also who doesn’t like to get a nice comment when they post.
That’s actually super sweet, also good luck to you on your art journey, and I know it can be frustrating sometimes but it’s definitely worth it if you look back at your older pieces!
@@Chaiiuna thank you so much! I actually set up a ig page just to watch my improvement. I really love drawing now and even ended up drawing things and in a way that’s totally opposite of what I imagined all based off “some artists draw cute things to cheer themselves up”- I tried it as a sarcastic “yeah yeah doing a cute drawing will totally fix what’s going on in my brain”…. Only to try it again and really like it and again and again and again lol and now I can’t stop and I need help… maybe that’s the real reason my boyfriend got me into ACNH lol.
One huge art pet peeve of mine is when artists gatekeep art. I remember this one time, back when G+ was still a thing, I stumbled upon this post of someone saying that doing art of your fursonas/OCs wasn't real art. If drawing fictional characters wasn't real art, then wtf are book illustrations? Edit: Also, another pet peeve of mine is when experienced/professional artists bully beginner artists as if they naturally popped out of their mother's womb drawing Leonardo Da Vinci-level masterpieces.
Unwanted critique absolutely grinds my gears man. I have this “friend” in my English class who, when I’m drawing, constantly critiques my work. I was drawing a character and he kept asking stuff like “why are the legs and hands so big? I think her face should be rounder, here’s how I draw them.” He even went as far as to take my drawing and “fix” the nose shape. Our art styles are totally different (his is more chibi and mine has more realistic proportions) and it’s infuriating that he’s always talking like his art style is more correct and better. Like just let me work man 😰
I love how I agree with some points you made and others not fully! We all have own opinions and shouldn't be afraid to talk about it publicly as long as we're not hurting other people. And even have discussions about it. I grew up in a "if you have nothing good to say keep your mouth shut" family, and I realized its wrong the older I grew. Even they do say bad things about other people, just not at their face. But honestly, if you are respectful about your opinions, then go tell them. Dont talk about the person behind their back! Im so tired of listening to family members talking shit about family members but being UwU nice to them when they talk to them. It just all seems so toxic! When I finally did say something to the person I had a trouble with /respectfully/, my family told me it was disrespectful, and I was like, "you think talking about other people behind their backs is respectful?". They just kept quiet.
yeah, agreed completely!! i personally believe that respectful honesty is far more valuable than polite lying, and i’m sorry to hear that you’ve dealt with so much of the latter with your family. i relate in many ways with my own, as well as with the art community, which i find also has a problem with being outwardly positive and UwU nice while being disrespectful and cruel behind closed doors. i hope that going forwards, the community can become more of a place where open conversation can be had without people needing to agree all the time!
Omg yes i hate when i get comments like "who asked" or the skeleton emoji also what i hate is people who are like "Ok but why does it cost so much it isn't EVEN THAT GOOD" and the art is like the most detailed, with thought and effort, so much time spent and te amount is just an understanding amount LIKE HELLO-
The unsolicited critique reminded me of this one time I was sketching and drawing my concepts out and this guy, that I call a 'friend', came up to me and started saying things like the lighting is wrong because the nose isn't there. I corrected him by saying the shadow would be either way and he started to shut up and then he went on and I repeatedly told him "this is just a sketch" If I didn't ask I didn't ask, and it's not like this was the final drawing so he was doing the most for nothing.
I went to art school and got a degree in Studio arts and let me tell you... Art school didn't teach me shit. 90% of what I learned was post college. There's better classes on UA-cam and you won't go into crippling debt watching them.
I watched a video on color theory recently and one of the comments stated that the short video summed either all or a large part (forgot which) of his/her college. Yikes.
I've always been someone who draws very quickly and sometimes when posting my art ill say how long it took me but I had no clue that it made people angry, ill try and refrain from saying that from now on thank you :D!
oh my gosh no, please don’t feel like you can’t mention it just because of me!! i only meant to criticize people who lie about how long a piece takes them, but if you’re honest about it and it actually just doesn’t take you very long, you have every right to share that!
Ohhh Okay I'm sorry I think I misinterpreted the things you were saying, I'm glad that I might not have made anyone angry yet because that's the last thing I want to do. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day and thank you so much for taking the time to reply! :DDDD
Your point about toxic positivity, and the comment section feeling like an echo chamber, is also really true for fan fiction. I know that writing is a different sort of art than what is talked about in this video, but I just immediately thought of it when you brought up that particular pet peeve. Everyone in the comments are always constantly praising the writer to high heaven, even calling their work masterpieces multiple times. Or really just having people “screaming” in their comments about how absolutely amazing their writing is, and how the characterizations were genius and whatnot, which gets so damn frustrating when you just wanna hear what people thought of the fanfic (story, plot, characters etc.), without them only pointing out the good stuff or sugarcoating it. Now I’m not a writer myself, but I’ve seen some authors actually request constructive criticism in the author’s notes, like “hey guys, I’m trying to improve my writing so any advice or constructive criticism would really help me out!” And all the comments are full of is just people gassing up the writers ego, to the point where they’ve had to state the same message multiple times in the next chapters, and even getting a little annoyed by the lack of response. Like, they’re probably writing on these fanfic websites to get better and improve, while also having an actual audience of non biased readers to get feedback from. But all of it just falls apart if the audience isn’t willing to drop the act, and actually help when the authors are asking for it 🙄
13:56 I kinda disagree with this one, while some might be bad I think most of them are helpful and get the message across rather quickly. It's actually helped me correct some mistakes I was doing when I first started drawing 😅 Although I wouldn't call them a tutorial since they aren't showing you how to do x, rather they show you common/beginners mistakes when drawing or coloring something
every time i see an artist draw like the most beautiful piece i've ever seen then caption it "sketch" or "rkgk" i feel like throwing my computer across the room.
Complaining about not getting enough engagement from art used to be a huge issue on tumblr years back. I saw so many posts, even comics basically shaming users who LIKE the art but don't reblog. They made it sound like liking but not reblogging was essentially a punch in the gut because "likes do nothing." It's true that likes don't do a whole lot for the algorithm compared to reblogs, but it just feels so arrogant and self-entitled to expect that from someone instead of appreciating the interaction at all. If people aren't engaging with your art they way you want them to, it's really not their responsibility to do so.
Yes this! I hate the whole "If you don't reblog you bad" shit and makes me automatically not want to share their art and even block them. I'm just happy when people like my art, just because may not get the engagement vs a reblog, doesn't mean I automatically deserve one. Also roblogging takes up space on your own blog where I'd rather have people engaged on my page for my original stuff rather than rebloggged stuff, it feels like cheating when I get followers from other people's art via a reblog, because even though the original creator is there behind the reblog, it's not super obvious sometimes and sometimes I've found myself following the reblogger instead of the original artist because I wasn't paying proper attention. Just let people choose how they want to react to your work, whether it's a reblog, love or a comment.
Ok really small tangent but the headphones thing if someone maybe has sensory issues and they break I understand thats a kinda urgent thing. I wouldnt put “EMERGENCY!!1” But rather just put “Important!”. For me I really need headphones cause I’m autistic and have ultra mega sensitive ears so I wear them often to avoid meltdowns and I can’t travel without music so if mine broke and for some reason my folks couldnt buy more I’d definitely open commissions but i know you weren’t really talking about that. I just wanted to put out there that even if it seems silly that someone needs something you shouldn’t judge unless you know what they’re going through. Again I agree “emergency” should be saved when it’s something that’s threatening your health and or well being though
Ppl, who think ocxcanon ships, furries, mlp are cringey will be hearing that kill bill syren from that megaphone i just put out of their apartment tonight. 👁️👄👁️ Cringe culture is most of the time the baby steps for artists nowadays, why be mad about it let's embrace the cringe!
I'm fine with people thinking things are cringe, not everyone has to like everything, but bullying(for lack of a better word) people who like those "cringey" things just because they like them is wrong.
Even after the baby steps, I believe embracing the cringe and the cool at the same time is the most fruitful and meaningful thing to do. And one man's cringe is another man's cool
I disagree with you on a lot of these points but I'm glad you brought up a discussion about them anyways. I think the art community lacks proper discussion of ideas
agreed completely!! disagreement and discussion are so important, especially when it feels like this community tries to erase or demonize opinions it doesn’t want to hear or deems “wrong”. it’s nice to be able to disagree on topics and still be able to discuss them civilly!!
I literally love the way the speedpaint is set up but also your OC is like on a little PowerPoint like we’re in a class listening 💓💗✨✨ got a sub from me
For all the artists who dont want to read "DM this to blablabla" anymore, in your Instagram settings you can automatically block the term DM and promotion and it will block all comments about this!
I always love the purists who say "I'm not listening to you because you draw (fandom that mostly consists of teens or kids) art so that means you're STUPID and not worth listening to" even when they're talking to legitimate adults Usually when I see it its people being upset that people draw furries, mlp, or sonic art and dismissing them because they don't draw humans 24/7 basically and it therefore makes them irrelevant somehow lmao
For the first one, I’ve actually had the opposite problem. I feel like I don’t take long enough, I’ve had a couple 9+ hour drawings, but it’s rare and my average is about 4. I’ll see people say they took 20+ hours on a detailed piece, and then I wonder. Is mine not detailed enough? I didn’t take 20+ hours, should I have spent more time on it?
I don't think it is honestly that big an issue. Most of the artists in the field recommend using premade brushes for environmental work as it is. And people work at different rates. If you are doing your own thing, time really has little bearing on your work. Freelance commissions have to be a bit quicker imo (someone is waiting on that product and you need to be paid for your time, but there is a fine line about time=money and the cost effectiveness of commissioning you vs a competitor) and if you work in a studio?? Professional work has a balance of time and output. A lot of mine take around 6 ish hours for a full piece, more for more details/characters etc. And some I have taken more like 16 for. Honestly, IMO, your time only matters if you are charging for it or trying to find a price point for your art. I know my process is a lot less streamlined when drawing for fun vs work
Naah, it's generally common for us to draw faster if it's something we're used to draw, like, say you draw a ton of fish and very often, your brain more or less knows where everything should sit and how to move the hands to get the desired effect. But then suddenly one day you want to draw, say, a horse or a human, something you've never drawn before. Naturally that'd take a bit longer because your brain have to focus more on details that you're not used to looking at, such as how the joints and muscles are set up, how angles change for that new thing (even if you have a strong grasp of anatomy/angle concepts and have tons of reference images) etc. Tied that in with some people also not drawing non-stop and taking many breaks or having work/school/similar stuff that takes away time/energy (because some people draw and sell art while also studying for example) and you have more time it takes to complete pieces. It's very different per individual (I go anywhere from 2 hours to 2 months on my stuff lmao) and per piece you work on, so don't feel like you have to "keep up and do like everybody else", it's completely normal and art should be fun so you shouldn't stress over it if you enjoy it c:
I feel this one :( people sometimes compare the time they’d take to draw something to the time I’d take, saying that they would take longer. I don’t really take it as a compliment because I’ll feel bad like I’m showing off or something and I know it should be a compliment to me but idk man
ngl it's kind of annoying to see people describe fast drawing as a "problem". us slow drawers can't draw fast enough to make minimum wage for our work. if your art looks like everyone elses but you can do it faster, i think you should just be thankful
A couple years ago I opened commission, a good handful amount of people commissioned me. Something I did and still do is take full payment upfront and finish commission within the span of a month. However a few days after opening commissions one of my sibling got drunk one day and snapped my laptop in half. I took a picture of my broken laptop, I wanted to tell everyone it broke with evidence but the way it broke I would have to lie to them how it broke since no one knew of my physically abusive family. Instead I only tweet out about it and everyone who commissioned me understood, two of them were kind enough to let me keep the money cause my computer broke. Of course it wasn't enough to get myself a new laptop but I still appreciated them till this day. I almost wanted to do an emergency commission so I can get a new laptop but I didn't because my mom told me that if you're not living in the streets then don't be a beggar, so I just worked to get my new laptop and I did. I cherish this girl since!
@@moimoiyoop To be fair, it depends on whether or not the laptop is what they used to create the art for the commissions and whether or not commissions was a primary/secondary way of gaining income. People were paying for art and if the laptop was the source of creating it, if it broke then that means they'd have lost their means of creating the art. They'd be unable to complete the commissions people paid for. That could technically fall under an emergency, especially if the money was going towards something more important in the present or even near future (whether moving out, necessities, ETC). However if the laptop were for personal use and wasn't a loss to the means of creation but more personal entertainment then yes, it'd be a bummer but not an emergency. TL;DR, It really depends on the reasons for the income and whether or not that is what let them finish the commissions or not. Not every emergency has to be a 'it's happening as we speak' emergency.
@@moimoiyoop Where? You suggested that since they potentionally were a minor at the time that it couldn't be for their livelihood and was because they just wanted a laptop because their's got broken and thus not an emergency. I suggested it could have been one depending on other factors such as it was what they used to create the art thus without it, no more income thus, depending on their home situation/livelihood could have been an emergency. Where did you already say what I said? Was it the part where I agreed it could have been for personal use? Genuinely curious.
@@moimoiyoop I didn't want to respond to you but I guess I have to give more context. I am not a minor, I was 19 years old when that happened, I paid my own part of the rent even if I still lived with my parents. I do my commissions on my laptop and all my old works got lost because of that incident. I have a main job but the amount I was earning was low so getting a new laptop would mean I'd have to find a second job or let people pre-order their commissions. I initially didn't add these details cause I thought it wasn't necessary since the paragraph was already getting long.
I agree with you about cringe culture. I hate the Sans fangirl ones. They're just like "oMG yOu lIke sANs. hA cRinGe!" Or "tHiS aRiST dRawS SaNs' hEaD LiKe a PeAnuT." Like, the artist isn't hurting anyone. Leave them the fuck alone. The Sans ones probably just piss me off because I'm a Sans fangirl myself tbh. In general I hate seeing fans of characters being made fun of.
Sans was actually what kept me drawing in my early teenage years, so Undertale is still dear to me even if I'm not as into it anymore. Sure, his head was in a certain style. But it kept me drawing in general and enjoying what I created.
Yeah the emergency art commissions often come in the form of scams too 💀 unfortunately I fell for one. This person needed $40 more just to get a drawing tablet and I happened to do just that, in exchange for a commission ofc. They agreed, got the money, and never heard from them again 😒
Thanks for bringing up the "making fun of beginner artists" thing. When I was about 11 I once posted a piece of fanart I was pretty proud of to the Warrior Cats forums. Completely unsolicited, a user who was a few years older than me (around 15 I think) went off listing all the things I'd done wrong, not even in a constructive way, just ripping it apart. When I tried to explain that I was a beginner and still learning this art style, they replied that it was "an insult to all artists" to "dismiss anatomical mistakes as style." Now 11-year-old me already had the sense to recognize that they were being unreasonably harsh to an actual barely-in-middle-school kid, but it still stuck with me. When I posted my first drawing on my DeviantArt account, I was too terrified to open my notifications for _weeks_ because I thought I'd have dozens of people ripping into my art telling me how much it sucked. When I finally found that no one had interacted with it at all, I was relieved beyond measure and finally deleted the drawing for my peace of mind. Didn't quit, but…yeah. Don't do that. You never know what damage you're doing.
For pet peeve 15 I agree A LOT. There are animators and artists that start out with Gacha, mlp, sonic ect. by drawing a kind of (?) fan art. Some people make content with those things as a job.
Maybe I just don't pay enough attention to what's going on around me, but every time I hear the lists of "sh*t that happens of twitter", I marvel at how incredibly chill my own little corner of that particular hellsite seems to be *touch wood... may it ever stay that way*.
I send my art to my irl friends because they actually help me! They tell me what looks wrong so I can change it. Perhaps it's because I'm closer with them and they're fine with critiquing my work unlike people online
ALSO THE ART REPOSTERS I hate them so much I want them all to go to hell. Especially with that "credit: unknown/??" / "DM for credit" bs some have going on
At first, I watched your videos because of how calming your voice was to me if I’m gonna be honest. But now it’s interesting background noise while I draw! (Thank you for keeping me inspired and excited to keep drawing!)
I really loved this video and it was actually interesting to watch. At some of these I was like "people do that?!", and the one that I agree to the most is the cringe culture pet peeve. I really like how you talked about that one. There are a LOT of people like that on the internet, and it's so sad. And also they even have the guts to call it "criticism" like bruh, it is not helping anybody.
Yeah, how is calling someone who likes to use gacha life/club (whatever) a gacha kid criticism. I've also seen people say sh-t like "if you can draw, why not just animate?" And as someone currently trying to, that's infuriating. You really believe animating is THAT easy???
my personal pet peeve is people who think just because somoene is older they need to have better art, i am not an adult myself but i see it happen so many times and its sad :(
honestly, I really hate it whenever people talk about how "good" my art is. I can't deny, my art is pretty decent, but it feels really awkward, and then I feel the need to complement my friends, and then I feel like I'm basically just asking for compliments, and it's really awkward and I feel worse than when I first made it. The worst part about it all is that like it's impossible to avoid, other than just to not show anyone my art 😭
The last pet peeve makes a lot of sense to me, Like- People shouldnt care if we like drawing Anthropromorphic Animals such as Sonic characters, Or if we like dressing up as Anthropromorphic Animals. I wonder why everyone cant just be nice to eachother :|
Man on the first point, since I was a kid on DeviantArt, I was always proud of how long a piece took me. I'd honestly claim that I'd worked on something for 7+ hours because I felt pride in my dedication and I wanted people to take a pause to really look at the piece and try to see the extra details. If you say you did it super fast then it probably means there are less little things to look for. Nowadays, where the place I share art most often is TikTok, it makes sense that I don't expect people to spend a lot of time with my art, but back in the DeviantArt days, they had the option to full-size the pieces and I wanted them to take it.
only thing i disagreed with is the talking bad about other peoples art, like yeah its natural to think somethings bad or ugly, but i really dont think anyone should voice those opinions-- its rude and can demotivate the artist, this coming from someone who's been told plenty of times that my art sucks (and people even used that to invalidate my argument once, an argument that actually had nothing to do with art!) just thinking someone's art is ugly isnt something to be ashamed of though, its human nature.
oh man, i’m really sorry it came across as if i was saying people should be voicing those thoughts - i thought i was clear that i just meant people shouldn’t be ashamed about thinking them or feel obligated to give fake compliments (more of a “if you have nothing nice to say about someone’s art, you’re not obligated to lie, you’re just obligated to say nothing at all”), but i can see how it came across otherwise. in absolutely no circumstance do i think that it’s fine to go around voicing those thoughts and insulting artists, and I’m genuinely so sorry if i didn’t express that clearly enough ;;
as a self-proclaimed "gacha kid" it really is discouraging to see all the hate towards this community. sure i'm aware that some of us do pretty cringe stuff, but it really sucks that just the concept of gacha games is so bashed. sometimes i feel ashamed to just use the apps in the privacy of my room. personally i use the apps just to create ocs, since it's easier for me to visualize them that way. so i'm really glad to hear someone outside of this community say that liking or using gacha games isn't cringe. thank you for the confidence boost :)
I agree soooo much !! Last time I saw a post of someone saying "if you don't comment that my art is perfect and made you cry, then don't comment" and "I hate when people just comment I love it or "so beautiful"..." in the comments everyone agreed, there were more than 20k likes, and I found it so sad and selfish and shocking ! It even dicourages socially awkward ppl to comment, I personnaly felt bad about it, even little comments are kind, ppl care about your art and like it !
the "people giving unsolicited critiques" point you made about some artists not dealing well with criticism really resonated with me probably because the autism spectrum can include rejection sensitivity (similarly to adhd) and whenever i recieve a bit of "oh you're kinda marching a bit funny" at cadets sends me into an awful feeling that eats me from the inside-out yeah maybe thats why it resonates with me also the hand thing "all-natural" vs "ouchie!" doesn't fucking work lmao, benefits of being double-jointed include making people think you're wrong about your own anatomy i guess
As much as I know that speed will come the more you draw, but I am always amazed of patience and dedication when someone says that their piece took 20+ hours. I am still honing my patience to get to that level. I know I am little guilty of telling that my clean-ish lineart is a sketch, but that is how I sketch. The very rough one which only I can read to very clean sketch.
The last one really pisses me of, i'm a gachatuber, i've been one for like 4 years now, and the thing that always gets me is the amount of people who just ignore all of my work and just straight up call me cringe just because I do gacha. I know how to draw, I just can draw poses and stuff, so I use gacha to express my creativity more easily. It really hurts but our comunity sucks so whatever
My biggest pet peeve has been whenever I post a piece of art on instagram, I always get a comment or DM where a person praises my art saying how unique and exquisite it is, and then asks if I’m interested in selling it as NFTs. Bro, if I did NFTs, then it wouldn’t be unique and exquisite anymore! I may be a small instagram artist who’s bunny pictures gets more likes than my art (which I am not complaining at all because I love my bunny and the world needs more bunny content) but I will never ever stoop so low as to sell my art as an NFT. I am anti-NFT and if I wanted to sell my art, I would sell prints at a craft fair for charity. Because news flash! Once you put a price tag on a piece of art, people will be judging it for it’s quality to see if it’s actually worth that amount. What’s also been worrying me is that I’ve heard stories of people stealing art to sell as an NFT without the creator’s knowledge. I’m afraid that one of these accounts might do that even though I said no.
With the first pet peeve, I don't really question how long it takes someone to make something. It takes me hours even to do a sketch though so it does make me feel bad when I see such clean and polished work posted with how long it took them to make. I feel similarly bad when someone calls these kinds of pieces a doodle. I've found just from watching people draw first hand that most are much faster than me, so again, I don't really doubt people's ability to work fast. I completely agree with you though that downplaying the final product like it was half-heartedly done in a short amount of time is really frustrating to hear.
That first one is so funny because I was always taught that spending less time on a piece is worse. I was told that if it took less time it meant the piece isn’t good because it took too little time to be able to have nice details. I always feel bad when I don’t spend several hours on a piece. Id also like to add that not everyone who bashes their own art is attention seeking. Negative self talk is an addiction and I only say bad things about it is because I don’t feel like I’m allowed to say good things about it, even if I really like it. But if people say their art is “so bad” and then get mad when people agree with them, they’re definitely fishing for attention. Another issue is that people in the art community are all for artistic expression unless they don’t like the subject of the artwork. Ship art, vent art, art depicting abuse, art of real people, pro shipping, etc. are ALWAYS shat on by the art community. It’s art. It’s not real. It’s the way people express themselves. You have no right to harass people for their art even if YOU don’t like it or YOU think it’s morally bad. That’s your opinion. This is especially rampant with kpop artists and it’s honestly disgusting how people can’t just block the artist if they don’t like what they’re seeing.
@@UndersCatts27 I have never heard of such a law. If that were true then ao3 would be down since one of their warning tags is literally that. If you don’t like it feel free to ignore it. It would also be super cool if you stopped calling me names and trauma dumping to try and prove a point
Only time I opened emergency commissions was when my oven broke and I couldn't cook anything. So yeah, 'emergency' commissions for what I would call a luxury item? I'm with you on that pet peeve for sure.
my attention span when it comes to working on a piece is short so I find it more impressive when someone has the energy and dedication to work on something for several hours.
Legit. I'm quite a fast artist, and I always hear "omg this took like,,, 9 hours!" And I always thought that the faster it was done, the uglier it was, so I always thought my art was nasty in comparison
For the fist one, I’ve now become quite concerned that people think I’m lying about my drawing speed- I used to _really, really,_ want to make comics, and I learned that you need to draw fast to make them, so I ended up being able to whip out a sketch in like 30mins… A fully shaded piece can take me anywhere from an hour or 2 to 5 is it’s got a background or small details! Apparently that’s extremely fast… I didn’t even know people lied about that stuff, why would someone lie about that? If anything, having a longer time means you really put in a lot of effort!
the way I always see you on my UA-cam ranting about something 😂 I love it! especially because you speak so well and are respectful. love your videos, don't know why I don't follow you yet, but now I do! ❤ have a great day!
I wasn't aware that people lie about how long it took to make a work, I always thought it was true and thought it was cool that they would share how long it took. It usually makes me happy to know how long it took, it makes me think maybe one day I would be able to finish something close to that time rather than a couple of days when I was younger.
I hate it when people post art and comment something akin to "It takes ZERO seconds for you to retweet/like a small creator. " They're right, but it also takes me zero seconds to not retweet their strange guilt-mongering/peer-pressure post. That and "Why is my WIP getting more likes than my finished piece?! This is unacceptable, you guys need to go over and like THAT one!!" Do I even need to say why this one pisses me off???
A nice and proper rant, just the way I like it. But yeah, lot of of things I can relate, especially the whole thing about cringe culture, just let the people draw what they want.
I love your Persona? Oc? I haven't been around this Account long, in fact this is the first Video i really watched from you, but it is very nice and pleasing to look at! Seeing other people draw while talking always calmed me and gave me Motivation, and again, this is the case. This art piece is very beautiful and i love the set-up? (I dont know the Name, but the aesthetic of the Videos) it really works well, and the volume of the music and the voice is amazing! I dont know how often you heard it but i am gonna say it too! I really liked everything about this video, from the fact that we got to know that this isn't an attack and just a Personal opinion to the pet Peeves as well. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more! :D (also, i have no idea of i said that already, but that sailor Moon drawing is fire!) Also a pet peeve i just realized After the video: When young artists get discoursged by older artist by saying "you're xY old? Thats so young and i cant draw like that.." "you can't possibly be xY" or something that Puts themself down because they didnt draw like that at that age. I am happy for young artist (as i am one myself) but i always wanna scream with those peeps who can't stop flaming Artists for their age. Art is for everyone of ALL ages, why is it suddenly a problem, if younger people draw fairly good? If a 11 year old can draw good thats just as valid as a 30 year old that draws good!
1)The plz share my art because I shared yours stuff drives me crazy too. 2)Secondly, getting paid cents for $15.00-$20.00 work of weird crap by kids who shouldn’t be asking for that stuff to begin with. (This one is seriously legitimate as I’ve had it happen twice). Like who asks to pay pennies for dollars worth of work!!! 3) People who say “your art is bad because you’re disabled”! This is a Reddit complaint primarily. And then same dude had his friends dogpile me with that same verbiage. He got banned but it absolutely bummed me out.
The zine part really infurated me cuz its so true, and the splatoon community currently is having that issue where the same popular artists manage different zines and just accept other popular people. Some of them don't even check your portfolio, just your social followers I made a Zine with some friends (a bit unprofessional) where our mission was to just admit good artists that deserve more recognition aka small good artists, and it kinda worked! Zine is not out yet but the people on there have grown and got more recognized, im happy for them We also got some shit from egotistic small artists complaining they didn't get in and it was about small artists bla bla bla, but we couldn't do much, their art wasn't on the theme of the zine and they needed to get a lil better, most of them where just starting If you're a beginner artist, focus ond improving and evolving what you like! Don't go into bigger projects like zines yet
i love your video layout, its really creative! reminds me of a unique website theme! (3 im glad more people are mentioning how annoying those bots commenting "DM your art to be posted on our page instead!" the other day i had 9 all at once, (not exact number) i end of up deleting them but its discouraging as a small artist to receive them as the ONLY comments sometimes, moreso annoying in general if anything really hope platforms like instagram fix them cause HOO BOY
I don't generally mind any of these, but I HATE when someone comments, "omg raise your commission prices; you're underselling yourself," and then proceeds to NOT commission me. I know I'm underselling myself. I spend a lot of time on my pieces for the small amount of money I get. Still, I need money desperately (my family will become homeless in about 3 months if we don't get money quickly), and the only way I get people to notice me is when I sell for $1, and even then, they are NOT BUYING. Maybe I'm an ah, but it infuriates me.
The first point made me feel so much BETTER about my art. I have always told my friends that I feel so slow cause these artists post things that take a fraction of the time it takes for me to do lineart. I am still slower than other artists, but at least I know that I might not be THAT much slower.
My my, I haven't checked into your channel for so long (have been moving, so I've been off the radar for a while)- high time to catch up! First of all, love the new overlay! It looks so fancy ^^ Aaaannnndddd we're back to another video with Paige voicing my exact thoughts on a matter, just with a little more rage than I would use XD Loved how there were even a few peeves in this video that I didn't even realize I had- really enjoyed hearing you rant about them! The one that struck me in particular was the one about the art time- that's one of the things I'm very conscious about considering I spend anywhere from 7 to 30 hours on a piece for my project and anywhere from 4 to 8 on a design, so I'm not particularly fast and sometimes worry if I'll ever finish the project all together- and it feels discouraging when people make it seem like a similarly detailed piece only took them like 2 hours when you know there's no way that's true (though I have seen artists make incredible pieces in the 1-hour challenge, posting their real time videos to UA-cam even, that's some skill and I can definitely appreciate that!)
A thing to consider with the speed of an artist should be A) Art style, B) Time constraints and C) Pickiness/Perfectionism. Personality, my art doesn't normally doesn't take me more then 3-5 hours. But this is because my style is optimized for speed! If I had a super clean style, I would never get anything done because it would take so long. My attention span is the same as a puppy. I also don't have a lot of free time, so I'm used to churning out a scene, halfbody, ect within an hour and a half right after I wake up before I have to haul to get to school. I don't care much about what my art looks like unless it looks odd when flipped. I go through the motions of drawing so that I can shade. I love shading. Its my favorite part, you know what I need to do to shade? Everything else. Anyway, some hints to optimize time: HOTKEYS, Ctrl-Z isn't the only one, use them :v White spots when fill bucket? Up your PPI Check early on for errors. Flip your canvas, it helps find out what looks off about it. Alpha Lock keeps everything on that layer. I'm not good at explaining it, so make a circle, turn on alpha Lock, and try to draw a line starting from the middle. The line should stop once it reaches the end of the circle! Have a good day:D
12:01 this tho, but honestly I have faceblindness and need someone to tell me if somethings off with a piece a little because I’m just trying to guess here 😅
I do agree that when adult artists do commission’s and claim they’re too busy to finish what they started is insanely annoying. But as someone in high school who does commissions it is very hard to plan things perfectly. I often think I’ll have plenty of time to finish a commission by the deadline and then suddenly a new school project was dropped on me out of nowhere. A lot of artists don’t say their age (at least the ones I enjoy) so I try not to judge them too harshly if something suddenly happens.
i have a pretty popular comment on another video that basically just says "it's onkay to have a stereotypically cringey oc, as long as you have fun it's all good!" and i regularly get replys of people trying to bully children. (i say that because a lot of them directly talk about children being bad at making ocs) nobody could even pay me to care about cringe culture after tthat experience lol
I'm on DeviantArt and have art progressions on Instagram and I've always cringed at telling others how long a piece tells me. What I do say is what materials I use. I see how long someone does art the same as asking a religious person or a faith follower on how long they pray... That's between them and their beliefs. Just as I'm not telling others how long it takes for a particular piece, or wanting to know that same info from other artists.
I didn’t know that there were more people with degrees in art were elitist, I just thought that my art teacher in my junior year of high school was the only person who did that. Just for context: My art teacher who I’ll just name Mr.Kay would constantly get into arguments with this one student, Misty. Occasionally he’d get mad at everyone in the class but it was mainly Misty. In one of their conversations Misty brought up how she was giving her all to pass the class and how she’d been doing art for as long as she could remember. Then Mr.Kay said something along the lines of “Well I’ve been doing art for longer than all of you.” And guess what. Every single student in the room fell silent, stopped painting, and looked at this dude. He says that and yet all of his lessons would consist of us gathering around a table and watching him paint. Then after he thought that enough time had passed he’d tell us to grab a sheet of water color paper, go to our desks, and try to best replicate what he just made. And if he wasn’t having us copy him, it would be some other artists work. The worst part being, the more our art looked similar to the original, the more praise he’d give. And before you ask, no we weren’t really given that many assignments where we were given creative liberties. There were only like 3, one of which we didn’t really do so technically we only had 2. Just compare the fact that teachers have to give 6 weeks worth of assignments with 2 being major grades. Not to forget that school years last for a long time. So the fact that he’d say something like that but not really help us that much with critic rubbed me the wrong way. And I knew that by then Mr.Kay was full of bs because I had him for two separate classes, 2nd period art 3 clay class and 4th period art 3 painting class(with 4th period being the one that Misty was in). The way that he ran his clay class was way superior to his painting class, because while he still gave us instructions on what to do, he gave that class a lot more creative freedoms in comparison. I will note that the high school that I went to was known for messing up schedules. Like for instance, having my 4th period class also be art 1-3 courses. But even so, there was only one student there for art 1 and one student there for art 2, the other 15 of us were all art 3 students. And when it comes to people that are just now getting interested in taking more art classes or trying to get freshmen to consider doing art in the future, you need to keep them invested by giving them more freedom than that. (Sorry for ranting)
I have made precisely one emergency commission call, and I found it mortifying, I felt like I shouldn’t have been in the tags and that there were better ppl in the tags The reason I did it was bc I couldn’t afford to get food for the rest of the week at my college I really can’t imagine going into those tags for anything less than not being able to feed myself When I really want something I just have a discount
I was vibing on the internet, as you do, and someone in the comments was giving unsolicited advice to a new artist and it was so rude!! When they got backlash for being rude and giving unsolicited advice, they legitimately said that they “never said they were a good person” and that “They hate bad artists, and you can never become good at art if you didn’t start in middle school.” It’s so ignorant, rude, and unhelpful!! Don’t give unsolicited advice people!!
Ok I cannot stop watching your videos and they also have kinda inspired me to start speed painting as well, as a start keep it up and absolutely love your art!
I had an art teacher who I had despised, if I showed him a piece that took me 4 hours to make, he’d think it took me 1 hour and if I had a piece that took me 1 hour he’d think it took me 5 hours, here’s the difference the 5 hour piece was small, the 1 hour piece was big, the big one had less detail and the small had more detail, in his words bigger = more effort put into it, I swear I’m just unlucky with any art teacher I get
oh god it’s been doing that a lot over the past few months- i reached out to support about it, but they just made me submit a support ticket only to tell me “their screening process sometimes incorrectly deletes comments it thinks could be spam” and that there’s nothing they can do 😒 if you comment it again in the replies here, it should hopefully stay!!
16:13 i agree with this one a lot people mocking beginner artists and making fun of them (specifically on tiktok) act like everyone’s born with talent to create perfect art, which is obviously not how that works they have to practice but for some reason people act like it’s weird that they get anatomy wrong and act like they can’t do that and it’s really fucking discouraging and they think they’re being funny but they’re not, the artist is trying hard to improve and people are telling them to quit because their art isn’t immediately perfect, and obviously, nobody’s is. every single amazing artist you see has started off drawing “cringy” art
i think my biggest pet peeves is when some random person takes a random light skinned character, black washes them, and then calls it "fixing them." and when anyone calls them out, they get called racist.
The actual emergencies are for example a tiktoker's dad made them pay their own medical bills as punishment THAT IS EMERGENCY they were 18- also people who make fun of others ocs FOR THE EYES BEING HIGH??? WHY?? And they say the ocs are cringe like let them have fun and not like they're posting actual bad things they're just doing what others are doing and having fun sharing stuff
The only moment I actually used the "Im in art school" excuse is when my brother said that primary colours are red blue and GREEN. It was frustrating because I had just spent the past month luring about the color wheel and what match whith what, how to create each colors and the categories. It's magenta, cyan and yellow. 😭
I got this recommended along with another video of yours from a year ago and I just wanted to say how much you improved! The way your videos look and the art was cute before, but its even cuter now!
I 100% agree with not giving critique if not asked, especially if it’s not the place for it. I normally don’t mind critique but I once posted about my improvement through an Instagram reel since it’s the best way to get people to see your art now and 99% of the comments I got, all from people that didn’t even follow me were critiques and telling me how to improve, again, normally I wouldn’t mind but it really wasn’t the place to do so, plus I’m really struggling to build a following for my art account it’s extremely discouraging and makes me feel like my art isn’t any good at all. when I post about my improvement I’d much rather have no comments than comments telling me how to Improve more, it was a good 5 year gap and I myself already wasn’t as satisfied with the amount of progress I made so it just made me really mad, worst part is I barely get any actual interaction with my art, barely 20 likes for a post, somehow got 160 followers, most of the likes come from people I know and usually no comments yet people decided to give someone who didn’t ask elementary basic art improvement tips that I already know and used(I guarantee 90% of artists know those things)
6:41 oh GOD yeah, I followed this one guy on Instagram. His art was phenomenal, and he was only 15-17, millions of followers, etc. But he ALWAYS complained that he's not getting enough
Whenever I draw, 90% of the time I've no idea how long it took. It just doesn't cross my mind to keep track. I wish I remembered more, purely because I'm curious how long I take.😅

@@DuchessCelestia I do want to cut myself slack! Though I also want to at least start trying to gain some followers so I'm also worrying about how I'm going to handle managing the time it takes between uploads. I also have whole weeks where I don't feel up for drawing because I have an IT day job during the week days. The past few weeks have been really stressful. =w=;;
I do feel though that slowly I am becoming more comfortable with how I draw so that helps a lot.
same, my adhd and other disorders is considered severe with heavy meds. and i always worry i have to make up for my "shortcomings". so i push myself and lie even though i swear i never to again because my whole actual childhood survival was on like. lying. like so many artists just are so two faced ig. sorry if i dont make sense my bipolar meds make me really fuzzy. like all i want is to be happy with my work again and paint made up foods and pokemon. like. also treating like some art so quick to do is weird cus its like saying a dude can get to alaska to florida in like 30 mins lmao
I super hate the trend where people make fun of "emily" who does recolors for beginner OCs when that's where a lot of genuine artists start out, or better yet, is just someone having fun!! wtf!!
yeah, that’s infuriating omg 😔 i feel like no matter what people do or say, twitter is going to get angry at it for being wrong somehow whether it actually is or not
yes, exactly!! just let artists live and create without making fun of them, it shouldn’t be hard ;;;

As a black artist, one of my most serious art pet peeves is "black people don't fit in their art style" or "their art style is pastel so it's okay for them to whitewash a certain character or person in their art."
It's so frustrating to see people justify not representing black people well with dumb excuses like art style or pastel. I draw with pastel colors all the time, but I don't ever feel the need to color dark skin the exact shade of my own palm because dark skin doesnt "fit my art style."
I hate when people say that, it's rude and doesn't even make the slightest of sense.
I actually feel like darker skin would look better with pastel colors, its a really pretty contrast but some people find every excuse not to
People who make pastel artworks yet lighten the skin tones are stupid, *especially* because darker skin tones literally look SO GOOD with pastels???
Some pastel artists are just missing out.
@@_anonymous_creature_ Exactly. Their racism is blinding them 😭
The argument is also garbage because if dark skinned people don’t look good in pastel cutesy palettes then the same should apply to pale characters in dark and gritty colour palettes right? And yet there is so much art of pale people in goth clothes or dark colour palettes! It makes no sense!
As someone who sat with a friend and helped them color commissions to help them finish emergency commissions for paying for their husband's surgery, it drives me crazy to see the false red flags, too. I love sending a couple of dollars via ko-fi to folks who need it and commissioning when I can, but not when they claim they need airpods or something. Thank you for mentioning this; it's a legitimate frustration when folks label that as emergency for sure. Appreciate the honesty, but not the false urgency.
Okay so now question
I found a UA-camr who is gaining views through giveaways and on her streams, there’s a donation counter to raise money for some illnesses or conditions she has.
Dude, the "emergency commissions" one is annoying asf! I paid for art from a kid who had an "emergency"...it was them wanting no joke, animal crossing new horizons. Ironic lmao.
LMAO W H Y I hate that sm djjdkfbf
It's sad when it is truly an emergency they need the money for, and people are hesitant because of previous experiences

@@xepphir Is this a joke? (gen) I don't see how a new Apple Pencil is anymore of an emergency than wanting a game. Sure, you may see it as more urgent, but is it a want, the same as a game or a need? As a fast artist, any good detailed drawing I have still takes a long ass time, filled background with shading takes around 5-7 hours to a few days (depending on if I work on it for the whole day or come back to it every now and then)
yeah, it’s the same for me - it’s reassuring to hear that i’m not just being overly critical of claims that pieces like that take no time at all, lmao
@@DuchessCelestia yee don't worry ur not over criticizing lol.

I'm a pretty fast artist, but for just a character drawing still takes me 1 hour, at least. Without it being very detailed. I couldn't imagine background and significant detailing. That's gotta be at least 8-10 hours for me. Maybe a whole day or two, depending on my attention span.

Same. I remember one time, someone told me my art made him feel like God put him on this Earth just to suffer. You know why he said that? Because I drew my OC, who was an alien tiger furry. That's literally it. He got all butt hurt because I drew a fictional anthro tiger 🙃

Only to try it again and really like it and again and again and again lol and now I can’t stop and I need help… maybe that’s the real reason my boyfriend got me into ACNH lol.
I just ignore the person and sometimes I will comment "nice work" on the piece.
Hey man congrats on 2 years for drawing now. Keep up the good work
One huge art pet peeve of mine is when artists gatekeep art.
Like just let me work man 😰
That sucks man, sorry about that :(
You needa tell him off at that point
start doing it to him.

I always love the purists who say "I'm not listening to you because you draw (fandom that mostly consists of teens or kids) art so that means you're STUPID and not worth listening to" even when they're talking to legitimate adults
Usually when I see it its people being upset that people draw furries, mlp, or sonic art and dismissing them because they don't draw humans 24/7 basically and it therefore makes them irrelevant somehow lmao

When I tried to explain that I was a beginner and still learning this art style, they replied that it was "an insult to all artists" to "dismiss anatomical mistakes as style."
Now 11-year-old me already had the sense to recognize that they were being unreasonably harsh to an actual barely-in-middle-school kid, but it still stuck with me.
ALSO THE ART REPOSTERS
I hate them so much I want them all to go to hell.
You really believe animating is THAT easy???
my personal pet peeve is people who think just because somoene is older they need to have better art, i am not an adult myself but i see it happen so many times and its sad :(
we had a beauty pageant back in high school where the finalists were decided through fb likes. Yeahh, marketing wins.
honestly, I really hate it whenever people talk about how "good" my art is.
NOT THE ART BOTS ON INSTAGRAMMMMMM!! They find me like 0.5 seconds after I post and there are SO MANY OF THEM.
Nowadays, where the place I share art most often is TikTok, it makes sense that I don't expect people to spend a lot of time with my art, but back in the DeviantArt days, they had the option to full-size the pieces and I wanted them to take it.
only thing i disagreed with is the talking bad about other peoples art, like yeah its natural to think somethings bad or ugly, but i really dont think anyone should voice those opinions-- its rude and can demotivate the artist, this coming from someone who's been told plenty of times that my art sucks (and people even used that to invalidate my argument once, an argument that actually had nothing to do with art!) just thinking someone's art is ugly isnt something to be ashamed of though, its human nature.
oh man, i’m really sorry it came across as if i was saying people should be voicing those thoughts - i thought i was clear that i just meant people shouldn’t be ashamed about thinking them or feel obligated to give fake compliments (more of a “if you have nothing nice to say about someone’s art, you’re not obligated to lie, you’re just obligated to say nothing at all”), but i can see how it came across otherwise. in absolutely no circumstance do i think that it’s fine to go around voicing those thoughts and insulting artists, and I’m genuinely so sorry if i didn’t express that clearly enough ;;
as a self-proclaimed "gacha kid" it really is discouraging to see all the hate towards this community. sure i'm aware that some of us do pretty cringe stuff, but it really sucks that just the concept of gacha games is so bashed. sometimes i feel ashamed to just use the apps in the privacy of my room. personally i use the apps just to create ocs, since it's easier for me to visualize them that way. so i'm really glad to hear someone outside of this community say that liking or using gacha games isn't cringe. thank you for the confidence boost :)
It even dicourages socially awkward ppl to comment, I personnaly felt bad about it, even little comments are kind, ppl care about your art and like it !
the "people giving unsolicited critiques" point you made about some artists not dealing well with criticism really resonated with me
probably because the autism spectrum can include rejection sensitivity (similarly to adhd) and whenever i recieve a bit of "oh you're kinda marching a bit funny" at cadets sends me into an awful feeling that eats me from the inside-out
yeah maybe thats why it resonates with me
also the hand thing "all-natural" vs "ouchie!" doesn't fucking work lmao, benefits of being double-jointed include making people think you're wrong about your own anatomy i guess
Regarding the very first pet peeve - YES!!! Especially when they post a gorgeous finished detailed piece and call it a 'sketch'.
Only time I opened emergency commissions was when my oven broke and I couldn't cook anything. So yeah, 'emergency' commissions for what I would call a luxury item? I'm with you on that pet peeve for sure.
my attention span when it comes to working on a piece is short so I find it more impressive when someone has the energy and dedication to work on something for several hours.

i hate that people make fun of the gacha community and other communities just because of a PART of a specific community, its so annoying
Legit. I'm quite a fast artist, and I always hear "omg this took like,,, 9 hours!" And I always thought that the faster it was done, the uglier it was, so I always thought my art was nasty in comparison
For the fist one, I’ve now become quite concerned that people think I’m lying about my drawing speed-
I used to _really, really,_ want to make comics, and I learned that you need to draw fast to make them, so I ended up being able to whip out a sketch in like 30mins… A fully shaded piece can take me anywhere from an hour or 2 to 5 is it’s got a background or small details! Apparently that’s extremely fast… I didn’t even know people lied about that stuff, why would someone lie about that? If anything, having a longer time means you really put in a lot of effort!
The only one not lying about how long it takes them to make art is Julia from Drawfee. I’ve watched for years and she is an art god.
the way I always see you on my UA-cam ranting about something 😂 I love it! especially because you speak so well and are respectful. love your videos, don't know why I don't follow you yet, but now I do!
That and
"Why is my WIP getting more likes than my finished piece?! This is unacceptable, you guys need to go over and like THAT one!!" Do I even need to say why this one pisses me off???
What brush do you use for lineart? It’s so clean!
i use jingsketch’s Clean Sketch!
:D (also, i have no idea of i said that already, but that sailor Moon drawing is fire!)
Also a pet peeve i just realized After the video:
When young artists get discoursged by older artist by saying "you're xY old?
Some of them don't even check your portfolio, just your social followers
I made a Zine with some friends (a bit unprofessional) where our mission was to just admit good artists that deserve more recognition aka small good artists, and it kinda worked! Zine is not out yet but the people on there have grown and got more recognized, im happy for them
We also got some shit from egotistic small artists complaining they didn't get in and it was about small artists bla bla bla, but we couldn't do much, their art wasn't on the theme of the zine and they needed to get a lil better, most of them where just starting
If you're a beginner artist, focus ond improving and evolving what you like! Don't go into bigger projects like zines yet
What is a zine?
or when people post their masterpieces and say "this is just a sketch/doodle"
i love your video layout, its really creative! reminds me of a unique website theme! (3
im glad more people are mentioning how annoying those bots commenting "DM your art to be posted on our page instead!" the other day i had 9 all at once, (not exact number) i end of up deleting them but its discouraging as a small artist to receive them as the ONLY comments sometimes, moreso annoying in general if anything
really hope platforms like instagram fix them cause HOO BOY
I don't generally mind any of these, but I HATE when someone comments, "omg raise your commission prices; you're underselling yourself," and then proceeds to NOT commission me. I know I'm underselling myself. I spend a lot of time on my pieces for the small amount of money I get. Still, I need money desperately (my family will become homeless in about 3 months if we don't get money quickly), and the only way I get people to notice me is when I sell for $1, and even then, they are NOT BUYING. Maybe I'm an ah, but it infuriates me.
its been3 months hows ur family 🙏 is it too late to commission
The first point made me feel so much BETTER about my art. I have always told my friends that I feel so slow cause these artists post things that take a fraction of the time it takes for me to do lineart. I am still slower than other artists, but at least I know that I might not be THAT much slower.
My my, I haven't checked into your channel for so long (have been moving, so I've been off the radar for a while)- high time to catch up!
First of all, love the new overlay! It looks so fancy ^^
Aaaannnndddd we're back to another video with Paige voicing my exact thoughts on a matter, just with a little more rage than I would use XD Loved how there were even a few peeves in this video that I didn't even realize I had- really enjoyed hearing you rant about them!
Anyway, some hints to optimize time:
HOTKEYS, Ctrl-Z isn't the only one, use them :v
White spots when fill bucket? Up your PPI
Check early on for errors.
12:01 this tho, but honestly I have faceblindness and need someone to tell me if somethings off with a piece a little because I’m just trying to guess here 😅
Listening to this is comforting while drawing
im really glad you enjoy it ❤️💙
I cannot explain how amazing this video is. Every point you made makes complete sense and is so true that it scares me 😭
I do agree that when adult artists do commission’s and claim they’re too busy to finish what they started is insanely annoying.
(i say that because a lot of them directly talk about children being bad at making ocs)
nobody could even pay me to care about cringe culture after tthat experience lol
I hate it when people fish for compliments by insulting their art. Makes me wanna say “yeah I agree tbh” so bad
I didn’t know that there were more people with degrees in art were elitist, I just thought that my art teacher in my junior year of high school was the only person who did that. Just for context:
My art teacher who I’ll just name Mr.Kay would constantly get into arguments with this one student, Misty.
It's okay. We all need to rant sometimes. Also, your art teacher sounds like a jerk.
I have made precisely one emergency commission call, and I found it mortifying, I felt like I shouldn’t have been in the tags and that there were better ppl in the tags
The reason I did it was bc I couldn’t afford to get food for the rest of the week at my college
I really can’t imagine going into those tags for anything less than not being able to feed myself
When I really want something I just have a discount
I had an art teacher who I had despised, if I showed him a piece that took me 4 hours to make, he’d think it took me 1 hour and if I had a piece that took me 1 hour he’d think it took me 5 hours, here’s the difference the 5 hour piece was small, the 1 hour piece was big, the big one had less detail and the small had more detail, in his words bigger = more effort put into it, I swear I’m just unlucky with any art teacher I get
Although besides my one comment here, this list is pretty much valid and I agree with a lot of the things you say
oh god it’s been doing that a lot over the past few months- i reached out to support about it, but they just made me submit a support ticket only to tell me “their screening process sometimes incorrectly deletes comments it thinks could be spam” and that there’s nothing they can do 😒 if you comment it again in the replies here, it should hopefully stay!!
@@DuchessCelestia I've replied and unfortunetly it keeps getting deleted, no matter, it sounded petty anyways.
I'm in love with your account omg

i agree with this one a lot
people mocking beginner artists and making fun of them (specifically on tiktok) act like everyone’s born with talent to create perfect art, which is obviously not how that works
they have to practice but for some reason people act like it’s weird that they get anatomy wrong and act like they can’t do that
and it’s really fucking discouraging and they think they’re being funny but they’re not, the artist is trying hard to improve and people are telling them to quit because their art isn’t immediately perfect, and obviously, nobody’s is. every single amazing artist you see has started off drawing “cringy” art
i think my biggest pet peeves is when some random person takes a random light skinned character, black washes them, and then calls it "fixing them." and when anyone calls them out, they get called racist.
I loveee the shading and the amount of effort put into it
The actual emergencies are for example a tiktoker's dad made them pay their own medical bills as punishment THAT IS EMERGENCY they were 18- also people who make fun of others ocs FOR THE EYES BEING HIGH??? WHY?? And they say the ocs are cringe like let them have fun and not like they're posting actual bad things they're just doing what others are doing and having fun sharing stuff
One of my art pet peeves is when artists draw men, but they forget to draw the jawline like OMG it’s not that hard to draw a jawline!
