Irredeemably evil villains can be good if they’re so evil that they’re entertaining to watch, like Dio in Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure.

Well at least dio was well written .had a pretty good explanation for that. comment for the algorithm yooo
the "MC always ends up being right" is definitely a pet peeve of mine smh, I like characters that make bad choices in the beginning and have prominent flaws, but grow and change into a likeable character throughout the plot
also when villains aren't given a chance to actually be threatening, only to make the MC/main group look powerful

It’s so irritating when the villains hold a powerful position but they’re so.. dumb??? like they’d be falsely advertised as this super politically powerful, ambitious, cold and calculating big bad that succeeded and pushed their way through tough competition strategically but the moment they meet MC they’re suddenly dumbed down because MC did one unpredictable thing or suddenly started acting differently, like how’d you manage to land a position like that and maintain it through tough competition when the moment you’re slightly inconvenienced or your pride takes a hit you start making rash decisions attempting to banish MC to the shadow realm?
I normally see this with villainesses (not the FL sort) and I pop a blood vessel every time it occurs, and it occurs a lot as this trope applies to both power fantasies and romance. the amount of potentially good stories that I’ve had to drop just because their villains were so third-rate.. who knows how many blood vessels I’ve popped at this point

@@peachsfav That's usually because people aren't smart enough to figure out how political figures manipulate others in real life.
That's one thing that pisses me off about Death Note becoming popular, these characters (especially Light) were never smart. They just make nonsensical schemes that could crumble down at the slightest inconvenience and then the show pretends that if you didn't get it or find it stupid, you're just not as smart as them.

@@yasmineh.1333 exactly!! like if you’re not good at writing politics and all that complicated stuff, just make them beat something up if you really want battle conflict. like a demogorgon. that’d be so much more awesome than reading bullshit repetitive political villains who don’t even know what they’re doing. if you can’t write that either then it’d just be better to learn how to actually write antagonists before you introduce them, or even start writing in general as they’re a major part of many stories. do some research, learn what what makes a villain bad and what makes them good. some authors do work on the tight schedule though, so I can’t really blame those guys

my biggest pet peeve in the reincarnation genre is when the only personality trait the mc has is being super nice and really pretty, and everyone loves them because they say nice things and when they smile flowers appear around them, and almost everyone acts like the pettiest people in the world so you know they're better than everyone else.
or when they're born into a super scary family that is overprotective and fawns over them 24/7, and when they're overprotective, super attractive father/parental figure is in in his politically inaccurate council meeting everyone is always tense and afraid of what the powerful man can do, and it gets tiring, like make the councilmen act like people, they always sit there quietly praying they'll make it out alive, and i'm like "why are you here?" interject, disagree, debate do what councilmen do.
webtoons like to tell me these men are sexy because they'll kill anyone that personally offended their one true love but thats never been sexy to me, rational, respectful men that don't get touchy with the mc are more attractive

My problem is that oftentimes, the novel cover is very high quality and gives me an idea of how the characters look, but the manga art style is a far cry from that. An example would be 'I Raised a Black Dragon'. The cover gave me certain expectations, but the manga's art was so different, I couldn't bring myself to read it. The art was pretty and cute but I couldn't bring myself to read it because it would ruin my image of the characters. Perhaps it's on me, but I just wanted to get this off of me.

I'm waiting for the day an author knows this, and have the character just be friends with the interest until they're at an appropriate age. Like the MC just tells the love interest they should be friends, and proceed to avoid them if they try to get closer to them.
Hell, even have the MC support the "rival" in getting the love interest because they are actual proper ages for each other. Would be a different twist at least. Maybe even have the MC crushing on an older person since they are mentally older, but they gotta wait until they're at the appropriate age, and this could be a setup to an age gap story now.

But readers seem to not get that the MC's will have to suffer. Not everyone will be yes men to the MC automatically. They're human and have every right to still be angry at "MC". And when strong characters show any sign of "weakness" aka emotions and lose a battle or smth because of it, I see a lot of complaining.
I like when characters have a reason to not have a reaction though. I actually think evil for evils sake villains work really well in theme driven stories because fighting the pure embodiment evil amplifies a whole bunch of your emotions and can be really interesting in its own right, where more nuanced villains are more interesting for character-driven stories with less abstraction. If that makes any sense-
A good example I saw is the difference between LOTR and Arcane, where Silco(a complex and sympathetic bad guy) works better with arcane's story which is driven by the moral and emotional complexities of the characters, and it leads to heart wrenching moments. And in LOTR and in a lot of those super dramatic old disney stories, if they'd tried to make the villains complex in that way that it would not only be boring but it would also be really tonally dissonant. In fact, evil for evils sake villains can be just as complex as more human villains, because they're embodying this like- distillation and amplification of an entire concept(evil).

    My biggest pet peeves:
    1. The author can't decide who to pair the MC with, so the comment section devolves into shipping wars. I honestly prefer "faux love triangles", since it leads to less headache. I've never seen a satisfying "real love triangle" that doesn't result in half the fanbase dropping off. It's even worse if one of the options is the more obvious one, like a fiancé or (if it's a fanwork) the canon love interest.
    2. The author decides, for some reason, to follow the least interesting person in a very interesting story. Not naming names here, but... like, I don't care who the maid is going to date, I wanna see the queen get payback against her abusive, cheating husband.
    3. The artist/author doesn't know what setting they are going for. Examples include: having Rococo or Victorian clothing in a "medieval" setting or giving the FL unrealistic clothing/armor because it will "distract her opponent". Bonus points if...
    4. The author has clear distain for the actual historical inspiration, so a lot of time is spent explaining how everything, from the food to the clothes to the social structure, is inherently better in the author's/MC's modern-day country. This is shockingly common, and is usually paired with having the MC "fix" the issue by introducing a new fashion or something. Little to no care is given to whether or not those changes are actually plausible (ex: if the ingredients for a dish are available to the MC), and no effort is given to merge or modify the "better thing" (ex: the MC must strive to recreate a similar dish using ingredients they do have), since that would mean the MC (and the author) would have to compromise and acknowledge the benefits the culture does have.

    1. Male Lead or any chara who in the first life hates MC, but everything changed when the isekai/regression happened. Resulting MC acted being nice and people who used to be hates here suddenly being nice too or overprotective, or worstly loves MC.
    2. MC's brother being siscon or overprotective. Can we just have... A brother-sister sibling where they actually act like a real one? I never saw any sibling in isekai/regression manhwa that always had siblings fight or annoy their sibling due to bored, it's always the sibling being a siscon or overprotective. Too dreamy if I had to say.
    3. Plot mostly filled with romance, when the early chapter actually shows an actual serious plot, but got forgotten for the sake of romance arc stuff. They even keep continue the story with romance arc, despite the main plot has already ended.
    4. Forcing a romance to MC. This is the big problem for "I Was The Real One" manhwa, the Author/Artist just added the romance for our MC when the plot doesn't even need it, resulting the plot become way too slow progress. Yes it's understandable why, because isekai/regression manhwa nowadays can't survive without romance. Gonna be harsh, *most of the reader of regression/isekai manhwa never cares for the plot, they only want MC and ML romance being the focus only and just that*
    5. Forcing the isekai elements to gain a readers when the plot doesn't even looks like it needed to be isekai. Wanna know who am I talking about? "I shall Master This Family" should've been a regression manhwa only since because the isekai part felt unnecessary to be there, and "Beatrice" should've never been an isekai manhwa, they could've made MC as a person who are lucky and privilege enough to grown up in a place where she is allowed to studying while being a commoner. Her "menye-menye" personality are actually the one who ruined the isekai part.

Then proceed to just use logic about the world thanks to reading it, so what's the whole point of the office worker previous life?!
For the third part, I've read so many stories like this, and only a few of them have the women still having PTSD from their previous life and shows it. In Another Typical Fantasy Romance, MC at least had a hard time loving again thanks to her previous life, so her and her new love interest slowly developed their relationship to help her get past the fear of love and commitment. Now that I like.

One of my pet peeves is how most of the stories go in no direction, if it was a romance story then apart from all those events where mc and ml have bonding moments, the story actually has nothing to offer. The mc's goal is usually just some silly thing like 'avoiding death' that's easily avoidable in the first place. Also why is it that almost all stories focus only on like 3 characters and they take as much screen time as possible, it makes the world feel so suffocating and almost like panels Abt the interaction of those characters rather than a webtoon

Lmao the avoiding death thing is so true. And I keep rolling my eyes when reading those ones, because usually they are actually done avoiding death really early in because the one who killed them is already madly in love with them, so obviously they already avoided it, yet the author still keeps making the mc keep fearing it for no reason.

i hate in the isekai villainess thingy where when the mc gets raincarnated in the villainess and the soul of the villainess just, doesnt exist anymore?? I like it when the 'souls' of the body intertwine, fight, fall in love with eachother and such, it adds so much to what the 'villainess' was about, what were her motives and maybe was she even in the right about the, usually bullying the og mc. My best example of this is the manga 'the one within the villainess' which i ADORE its so good

Uhh....that's not reincarnation. That's possessive rebirth. Reincarnation is where a person is reborn with a new body that belongs to him or her. Not someone else.
Oh and regarding virtually all possessive rebirth stories are gonna ignore that lol. The story is designed so the mc can use someone else's body to experience love under the false illusory pretext of she has become the character, mc's the new version of the villainess which is heavily stupid and ironic since possessing someone else's body doesnt mean mc is that said someone and the villainess being a character doesn't mean she wasn't real

I have so many pet peeves with the isekai genre, but I’ll name some on the top of my head
-I hate and I mean HATE when the mc gets killed or betrayed by their love interest/ex husband or bf, then they get reincarnated and suddenly the love interest/ex bf or husband is SUDDENLY KIND AND WAS JUST MISUNDERSTOOD or the mc changed so much and doesn’t like to interact with the love interest SUDDENLY HES SO INTERESTED IN HER AND THEY END UP TOGETHER because the mc falls in love again, I find this stupid if the love interest was such an ass before why would he change? Just because the mc wants the bare minimum? Because she’s not interested in you? It’s so annoying
-Love angles, I will forever never call them love triangles because ITS NOT A TRIANGLE ITS AN ANGLE are the love interests in love with eachother while in love with the mc no? Then it’s an angle. And some authors just add a love angle WHEN ITS NOT NECESSARY? take the crow one for example, I don’t remember it’s name but it’s about a crow that turned into a human, something along those lines, the mc was happily in love with her love interest and they were fine sure there was some stuff they needed to work out good, more interesting arcs (the arc wasn’t even interesting but whatever) BUT THEN THE AUTHOR DECIDED TO ADD THIS SLAVE BOY WHO THIS MC SAVED FALL IN LOVE WITH HER?! idk it want necessary at all? Someone else could’ve saved him or maybe we can have a platonic friendship between a man and a women? Sorry off track BUT HE WASNT NECESSARY AT ALL? WE ALL KNOW WHO TF SHES GONNA END UP WITH? i hate this trope with my life
-harems, I hate them both normal ones and reverse ones, I don’t get it how tf do 7 different people fall in love with one person, the normal reverse harems have the blandest female characters and the reverse harems are just frustrating, and all of them crowd around the mc like it’s their job, and the mc is like “huh what?” Like … ITS SO OBVIOUSLY IN THEIR FACE? the normal harems are just fan service the reverse harems is fan service but less annoying
-the mc being bland, **cough** male isekai mcs **cough** most female mcs have the same personality, tsunderes with some seasoning, it’s Annoying and repetitive, there are some “strong fls” for example “I will save the fls brother” or smt along those lines, but this became a trend and now there are many “strong fls” but it’s so bland, they all have the same personality’s and look, all pale, some hair color, long hair, pretty face.
-the sexism in the community, I swear there will be some nice and “soft” or smt fl and people be hating on her, but if there’s a soft and kind ml and people be like “omg he’s so fine” but then be dissing the soft fl? Idk and what’s with hating on “rival” female characters? For example ratsha people be hating in her the more then naviers ex husband? And what’s with hating on the fl rival who just likes the same person as her and them butting heads? Idk if the mls do that people always go “omg hehe” or smt on those lines, it doesn’t make sense? And what’s with people literally hating on the female villains but then be like “oh but he’s hot..” to the male villains? It’s a little suspicious.
-the same design, the mcs always look the same just different art style, eye, and hair color, and pale white skin, if you going to give the mls some melanin give the fl some too… and what’s with long hair? Almost every single mc has long hair down to their knees? Idk I just have a problem with pale mcs all the time. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MLS I SWEAR TO YOU, THEY ALMOST LOOK THE SAME “but it’s just the charm” sure maybe but imagine you want to pick a book to read with diverse characters, but every single goddamn book has the same characteristics (personality type, hair color, eye color, clothing, race, etc etc) for every single god damn character yes sure there are some tanned mls and some tanned fls (from what I know only 2) but are they often? Do we ever get more then 2 at most 3 tanned / south east Asian / black (which I don’t think will happen, but we can only hope)? No never there’s always 1 tanned ml and sometimes south East Asian but it’s always the tanned / south Asian dude falling for the white girl, but in the rare ones there is a tanned fl but usually she’s pared up with a pale dude, with black hair and red eyes, can we just have POC couples? Ok I went way off topic, the mls mostly look the same pale black hair, red eyes and abs, we need some diversity and more body types, it’s like they’re afraid to draw ugly people.
-it’s the same trope over and over again, the father-daughter trope, the “they’re step siblings/adopted siblings so it’s ok” trope(aka the incest trope), the “i hate the touch of a woman, but she’s different” trope, the “she wants the bare minimum and a peaceful life, how interesting” trope, the enemies to lovers but it’s just misogynistic, the she doesn’t even LIKE HIM UNTIL HE ANNOYS HER TO THE BRIM WHERE SHE AGREES RO HANG OUT OR GO ON A DATE WITH HIM? y’all have you ever seen this somewhere? Oh I know the future sex offender, I sorry, the oh she said no? Oh she doesn’t want me to buy her luxury things? So what I’ll do it anyways, the “she said no? Well too bad I’m going to force her anyways by manipulating her or by forcing her because of my status!” I could go on and on we never get flavor if we have a nice ml he’s overly jealous, if we have a harem they all are good options except for that one dude or or the woman always needs a man’s help/guidance/money to live, the mc always ends up with a man, yes sure if you like romance go off have fun, but you have to admit if a it’s a dude instead of the girl people are like “well he doesn’t need a romance side plot it’s fine” but if it’s a girl you all say “well I get bored if it doesn’t have romance” and I swear y’all are really homophobic it’s always the “people cant be friends anymore cant they :/“ stfu if it was a girl and a boy you would all be on board with the ship, also we always get “yuri baited” whatever that means we just get queer baited, the authors all know we are in need of some more lgbtqia+ isekai but instead they use it to bait us, looking at those story’s with the og mc being obviously the better choice, but no the mc always ends up with the worse option or the new character we’re introduced to, also speaking off can we get more single mother tropes? We have more then many single father ones, also the ones with a child and a motherly figure always have a ml, I swear to you the “guy doesn’t need a wife he’s fine” but once it’s a woman you all go “she definitely needs someone to help and support her 😣😣😣🤭🤭🤭🥺🥺🥺” I just need a more diverse story.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, I’ll probably find some spelling errors later

My biggest pet peeve is, in most of romance reborn genre, they don't explain HOW can that particular MC got a new life/reborn. Also, If they got reborn why don't they thank the God/Goddesses for giving them a second chance in the first place? Do they think they got reborn just cause their "never ending hatred" make them got the second chance? -_- c'mon. That doesn't make any sense. Even if I don't believe in God, if I happened to get reborn to redeem my past life, then God's power is real and I will thank God and serve God. Especially if I become a beautiful, rich, privileged girl in my new life. From titles I read, most of them was like "ok cool I got new life, I'm going to act like I'm the center of the world now, yay. Let's do revenge, yay. But actually, let's do romance first now, yay". And proceed NOT QUESTIONING WHY they got another life or thank the higher power because they got second chance and a chance to get revenge.
Also, in Isekai romance genre, the mc not questioning and searching WHY they got into the novel story is too weird for me.
I mean, if I were in their shoes I need to search the answer to why I'm inside a novel story. Is there some kind of God doing that? A Witchcraft? Demons? Who toys with my life and put me here? C'mooooon. -_____- they just suddenly got distracted by male lead handsomeness and forgot all about their past life already.

I got really annoyed by some of these pet peeves that I began to start writing/drawing stories of my own that completely took out those annoying pet peeves within manwhas and manhuas. Like currently I'm invested in writing 3 stories.
    1. One about a top player that got stuck inside the game world and suffered many mental issues. She planned to change the plotline of the game story no matter what, and prevent the harem of the female lead from forming because the destruction of the game world will be triggered if it happens. But every time she tried to change the story line, a piece of her humanity will be gone. And I'm planning on making her slowly succumbed to the darkest, from a hero to a villain in the end.
    2. Story two is about a snake demon lady in a xianxia world that only has one goal in mind. And that is, to save her younger sister and make sure that she lives a better life than hers in the future. She was smart enough to never play with fire and always stayed far from the main plotline characters, until someday the main ultimate villain's henchman came to visit for a deal to save his master, the villain. And from then on, the both of them work secretly in the shadows as the main characters fought it out with each other while the both of them reaped the benefits in the shadows. I'm making this one as an enemies to lovers troupe.
    3. And finally, story 3 is about a psychopathic murderer that woke up as a different person in another world. She got there because the former owner of the body made a deal with the devil to summon for the most heinous, cruel yet successful being he could ever find to carry out her revenge in exchange for her life. From then on, the mc basically carry out a murdering spree left and right because she's having fun. And in this story, she was betrothed to an 'ugly, cruel, and pathetic' man that was basically a 3rd rate villain. Instead of pushing him away, she took him in even though he hates her. And together, the both of them set out on the path to destroy the kingdom and set the whole nation on fire. This story is basically me writing about two villains getting their way.

I also got a story idea.
The main character is the second princess of the country, who is secretly a witch. One day, she got three prophecies.
The first one is that of her being killed after people find out that she is a witch. But she found out about the first prince's secret because he did some stupid villain act of saying everything to the "the soon-to-die" protagonist. She decided to use the secret to fight him for the throne for her to be the king.
The second one is that of the future pope for the holy see who is still a saintness at the time. She decided to approach her to get the support of the holy see. To remove the detest people have on witchcraft.
The third one is about the official side couple in the story, the captain of the first knight order confessed his love and then got beaten up badly because the woman he has a crush on think that he is insulting her by do so. She decided to get the woman to be her knight because she want both the woman's power and the support from her admirer, the captain and his family as he is a successor to a dukedom. This woman is my favorite character other than mc. She grew as a commoner and the orphan of war but fought her way and became the strongest worrior in the country. But she got looked down because of her up-bringing, her gender, and her fighting style of using her fists. She worked as a mercenary. She got care free attitude and love money. She also got lots of blood lust.
The saintess is the two-faced type who act like an innocent and weak girl on the outside but scheming on inside. But she is a good girl and a help to mc. She won't get a love interest as she is gonna be the pope.
The love interest for mc would be the richest merchant who is funding her fight for the throne. He wanted to became a noble and hate the first prince for looking down on him, so he is helping the mc. He use mc for his raise to nobility and mc use him for his money and connection. But they start to have feeling for each other after working together for long.

It's difficult to find anything that's not a magical anime love story... though I understand that the main audience of webtoon/tapas are young people who crave romance. I mostly read Thriller, Horror, and Fantasy.... AND ALL OF THEM ALSO ARE EMBUED WITH ROMANCE. At this point it feels like other genres are just the salad dressing for romance.
On the topic of Zuko, I think he is the epitome of a CONFLICTED character, not a morally grey one. Maybe in the first season he is morally grey, but he HAS good morals going forward. He is conflicted about holding to them in the face of his family.

something similar to the jarring 3D assets that can kinda take me out of it is using pictures on clothing lol. like when a character is wearing a floral shirt and the pattern is just a floral pattern stock photo that is much more sharp or detailed than the rest of the art style. sometimes, even if the stock picture chosen matches the art style, it'll still bother me a bit if it's done in a "Chowder" style (meaning it looks like the silhouette was cut out of patterned paper and the details were sketched on). much like the 3D assets, it absolutely makes sense for it to be a common practice, it's just something that sticks out to me
and on the topic of 3D assets, while I absolutely understand the background being 3D, I SWEAR I've seen 3D assets used for something like... a mug a character is holding. or maybe a close-up of one. with no design on it. I may be tripping, but I swear I've seen it in a webtoons original at some point and it seems like overkill

    • @Yohannai
      @Yohannai Рік тому +7

I know things like a mug seem simple, but normal objects tend to be a real pain to draw if solid objects aren't your thing. Because they're so easy to mess up and people know what they should look like.
I actually count on using 3D in my art for this reason (also because I studied both in 2D and 3D so it makes sense to combine my strengths in both to save time), but I think if artists had more time they should try and at least trace the 3D objects to bring them into their own style with the proper pens, lines and level of details.
Sure it takes more time than just keeping the basic 3D images, but it takes less time than making a background or prop from scratch.
There are probably more artists doing this than we know, now that I think about it. You just can't tell.
As for patterns, I agree, though if its going to be a recurring thing, the artist could trace or draw it themselves and then make it tile to use the asset and make it fit the art direction. And then after doing it once it becomes yet another good asset that can be reused.

There is always a glow up characters don't have to have a glow up if it's not really part of the story. For example they don't even talk about it or all they say is "oh you look different" but I understand that it's for the audience
And lastly how characters react to a hot character. Like a character can treat the protagonist badly but they will only swoon or blush because said character is attractive to them

A very big pet peeve of mine is to always portray the MC like something in their lives is missing. So when they get isekaied and everything else goes well for them the last thing on their list is to get a boyfriend and have kids. They never explore the MC's trauma in depth, even being killed by a car and remembering, it appears episodically, but never flashed out. Another pat peeve is to give the MC a tragic death/past but never showing them struggle, like all their pain never existed, than why even Isekai? A very good anime that flashes out their MC and their past life's struggle is "Jobless Reincarnation".I like how they don't try to make the MC right or likeable but you can still relate to him sooo much.

    I have a list:
    1. The main lead is always right even when they make no sense.
    2. I know you don't mind 3d background/objects but for me it's so distracting especially when the person drawing has a very cartoonist art style like blood-ink it looks so strange.
    3. When the male lead is a non consenting person for naughty time or for those who don't get it a ra*ist. Does "Bossy president" ring a bell.
    4. The lead is has no personality like "Untouchable lady" even though people say it's really good it's just so boring her personality is "I'm was really sad when I was younger and let my family use me " she has nothing no passion, or personality or dreams.
    5. Expression are never shown in "secret playlist" everyone is emotionless so it always looks boring because the creator doesn't want to draw them "ugly".
    6. Hair some creators are really bad at drawing hair like antistalker the hair is drawn in clumps then it has hair strands going everywhere like it doesn't have a start.
    7. No chemistry between the lovers except for the creator said so.
    8. Boring panels I don't think I need to bring up an example because most of them are pretty boring like there's nothing really interesting and always so basic but for a good example there is "Lookism" for how they do hard hitting punches or "touch my little brother and your dead" where a guys face become his hair and he's all super sane. Wanna go the traditional rotate "chainsaw man" or "Tokyo ghoul".
    9. Speaking of panels let's talk about why they are so far a part.
    10. When the love interest is conditioned to love ml/fl I have two examples but I can't remember the names.
    11. When someone is transported to another world and they're perfectly okay with it.
    12. Unfunny jokes I know comedy is subjective but a lot of them just aren't funny.
    13. Putting in slurs I know it's mostly lgbt community. Hi "School hunk is a girl" it got to the point where I stopped reading in the later chapters
    14. When one single person is "wacky and crazy" and everyone else is just so boring, plus normal and not just as crazy as that person only one person is in the lane of normal it's called the "straight man".
    15. Useless characters you know those characters who seem like were only used for like one arc but the author didn't want to get rid for some reason so they're kinda just there.
    16. Speech bubbles placed really weirdly.
    17. Body types are always the same mostly for girls even when action is involved the girls always have the "model body" like were are buff girls at bring them in.
    18. When the romantic leads get together at the end.
    19. When like ml is like combat person who has been on the fields but has zero scars on there body.
    20. Using real life images
    21. Grammar problems like I'm reading it and then all of a sudden I'm trying to figure out what the author ment, it's not the author's fault it's the proof readers.
    22. Racist/homophobic characters I think we've got better at the racist but not so much for the gay people like in "Lookism" I think his name is Daruis but you know the one he is the only gay and guess what we see him as a sexual predator. The one thing kind of funny thing about him is his gang logo is a bleeding arse hole.
    23. The trigger warning taking up most of the page so you can make less panels like in "the prince's oppression" and it's we get it but I think it good to have it if it's a specific arc but if it's happening all the time just do what "ghost eyes" did and have it in one chapter.
    24. The characters have nothing to talk about other than the main character.
    25. The main character is always the victim even when it there fault or they are always a treating other people badly
    26. The lack of communication in a relationship, any kind of relationship not just romantic ones.
    The End

"she's strong and tough and cold, that's why she's so emotionless" girl just say she doesn't have a personality. literally 60% time that character is just saying "hmmm" and thinking to themselves. don't get me wrong, not all characters like this are bad, they could be done well but only if the character appears once in awhile not the main character. and the way some artists would rather have the character have the most monotone expression even through extreme situations just for the sake of looking pretty or sexy. really puts me off the whole comic. it's almost funny really, if a character looks pretty and sexy all the time, then in special moments where they are supposed to look other-worldly and gorgeous, it doesn't work! because the characters has been making the same face over and over again, it's tiring!

Panels are far apart to make sure it's easy to read, due to the scrolling format. Of course there's a limit, but in general, it's better to place them far apart. I think isekai as a genre can be really interesting, but the problems you listed are spot on. There's a huge lack of variety and uniqueness even with the newer surge of webtoons, it's easy to disregard them and immediately pan them as generic. I will say though, 50 Tea Recipes from the Duchess actually tries to do something more unique since the mc KNOWS how she got there and uses her knowledge of her past life to expand the worlds' knowledge on health benefits through tea, and even tries to expand knowledge on different cultures in her predominantly white kingdom. She even tries to seek out where the original host of her body went. There's really no point in isekais if the mc can just cruise in an entirely new world as if they've lived there their whole lives or have no background or even longing of their past lives.

People need to over look the 3D background because think about it, it would take FOREVER to complete a single background with so much details for the artist on a time crunch. And you know what that means longer wait for an update. The models helps the artist finish the comic chapter faster and be ready for you to read.
90% of people that are complaining about the 3D backgrounds I bet is really impatient about waiting for updates. And I know y'all hate when they go on a long hiatus so yeah if you don't want the artist to get overwhelm let them do their 3D backgrounds.

Before 3d assets were a thing how do you think manga artists completed their work? It’s painstaking and difficult but an established webtoon artist can afford assistants to help even with tracing over 3d assets in order to stylize it properly and not simply copy & paste. I know some of my favorite artists use it to save time but it really does lower the quality of their art. This is coming from someone who’s drawing their own webtoon trying to get it professionally published. Does it take forever to draw backgrounds? Yes, but it’s a million times better than staring at blocky, angular cups, generic hallways/rooms & other overused assets.

  • @eve3266
    @eve3266 Рік тому +14

For me, my biggest pet peeve is when the mc gets reincarnated and it's only relevant for the first 5 chapters, and then they never really bring it up again in the story. The author could have just told the story with the og mc... Especially for villainess webtoons, where the story would have been perfectly fine if the og villainess died and woke up when they were a kid again, then worked their way to change their fate.
For example, The Way to Protect the Female Lead's Older Brother.. It's good, but I think the whole isekai factor is kind of irrelevant later on in the story. I think if og Roxanna died to the Pedelian girl and got sent back to when she was a kid and kept all her memories from her previous life, she could definitely accomplish what the story has so far.
I get it that maybe the mc just accepts the fact that they're stuck in whatever world they're in, and that they're going to live as someone else, but like that's the thing, why have them reincarnate into someone else, if they're just going to completely forget their og identity? I would rather see the story of the og character than someone tying to be them.
I think Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess does a good job keeping the whole isekai factor relevant to the story since the mc can see things the people in the world can't see (quest pop-ups, favorability, etc), and she doesn't forget her past, we'll see flashbacks of her past life every now and then. Overall, her personality still seems in touch with her past one. She accepts the fact she's living as someone else, but she doesn't act like the og did at all. It's a masterpiece.

I agree with you on the possession part though I can't critic the stories you have mentioned entirely cuz I haven't read them lol. But ya you're right on that the pet peeve part. The villainess regressing is way better than her who was a fictional character now turned real along with the story she's a part of but in exchange she's killed off so that her body will be possessed by someone else/ the fmc who will use that body for her selfish means.
There's another similar trope that is disgusting where its not characters turning real but the fmc who was betrayed being reborn and now possessing someone else's body and using it for her selfish means such as chasing after her ex fiance or actual lover when she should be thinking of a way to return that body to the original owner after punishing and killing the ppl who used or betrayed her. Not go simp for some guy who is ironically an arrogant clown who has a pretty woman's face just because she is a naive idiot who still has lingering feelings
Also there's the fact that they are reborn in someone else's body and they know its not their actual body and self but they later delude themselves into thinking they are the person they are possessing and misguide others into thinking they are actually him/her who just had a personality change.
This is why I love Rebirth of the 8th circle wizard. Henry doesn't delude himself that he is the actual owner of the body or go on convincing others that he just changed. Rather he deceives them into thinking he's the other/young Henry and manipulates them(them being corrupted nobility along with the ones who betrayed him) since he doesn't have his former strength to accomplish his revenge and to gain back the happiness for his people. Its really good since there are no stereotypical characters and actually realistic. Plus the way he does business and politics is really interesting.

My reading pet peeves (which is directed to both webtoon/manga and novels, with repeated points made by others)
    1) Unnecessary love triangles, literally no point in making the 2nd male lead just to be an obstacle for the main couple.
    2) Unexplained/unnecessary harems, the MC can be literally a trash and yet they have harems, like why? Plot armour imo.
    3) ML/FL who is bad/abusive to MC and get a redemption arc that doesn't worth much imo. It can be good but generally I find there are hardly good ones I enjoy reading.
    5) Tragedy/BE, there are good ones but sometimes I ask myself "why?" There isn't much point sometimes in reading BE where often there isn't any takeaways or meaning. This is mostly just personal preference.
    6) For the Isekai troupe especially, if they are going to "avoid dying" can the MC stop breaking the main plot and think they didn't do much or think the plot will go the same? Like it definitely will not go the same way since you changed it (unless there are more to it, but generally they are pretty swallow when the MC is written that way)
    7) Fathers without their love of their life who died in the beginning of the story. Why can't the father have HE too? Like the daughter get HE but the father often gets BE, ugh, hate that really.
    8) Follow up the previous point, it's always fathers. What about mothers? It's always the father loses the mother and not the other way around?
    9) When 1 gets popular, the other copies. I find this is more for Korean webtoon/novel/manhwa than other languages but seriously, they should have more unique names. For example:
The reason why Raeliana ended up in the Duke's mansion
    VS
The reason why Ophelia can't get away from the Duke
And more. (Worse for action type ones)
    10) So for titles, specifically translated titles, some are just terrible imo. Maybe the localisation team wants to shorten the name but some are just terrible. I know it has been a trend (not just for light novels) but for Korean web novels and now adapted webtoon to do the explain plot in title, but I just can't stand some of the localised titles.
    ----
I can go on and on. But these are things I find in most webtoon/manhwa I read. Actually I stop doing a lot of the romance ones and go to all the fighting/action stuff and there are another whole lots of pet peeves from there as well. The more I read the more things added to the list. I get annoyed but I still read them, it's a love and hate relationship.

i like isekai romances genre of manwha’s, but yea sometimes the mc’s backstory can be pretty hit or miss depending on how the author decides to tell the story. the only information they use from their past life in their real life out of all the isekai i’ve read were that they used the storybook they read to help them understand the plot points of the world they’re in. Doctor Elise, correct me if i’m wrong, is the only story i’ve read where the mc used knowledge from her past life as a doctor to help people in the world she gets reincarnated too. But honestly stories like “i lived in Seoul then died and reincarnated into the novel i read before i died” stories aren’t my fave, it’s really the ones where the mc lives in a fantasy world dies a tragic death and reincarnates to change her mistakes to live or get revenge.

    1. The FL always act like a matchmaker for the ML and the Og FL in almost every Isekai manhwas I've read. I mean like gurl he's not interested with the Og FL , his into you.
    2. There's a lot of toxic rival between the FL and her sister/step-sister/half-sister, and lots of FL has loving and overprotective brother/step-brother/half-brother. It's getting annoying to the point I get anxious whenever the FL's sister is introduced in the new manhwas, whether she would be a white lotus bitch or genuinely a loving sister. I want to see more heart warming sisterhood in the historical manhwas .
    3. Love triangles out of nowhere and sometimes it's unnecessary for the plot. Like the manhwa I had read "As you wish, prince" the ML's right-handed man was on a friendly terms with the FL, then in one chapter he has feelings for the FL suddenly without showing signs of developing feelings in the earlier chapters. I mean it's ok to add love triangles but there should be a deep meaning behind the 2nd ML's motivation in pursuing the FL
    4. So many fathers become distant with their daughters, the FL after their mothers pass away in childbirth (it's not their fault they existed and it's the father who created them 🤷🏻‍♀️). Also many abusive families/relatives before getting adopted or being sent to the dukedom or imperial palace.
    5. A lot of FL being isekai'd and their knowledge from their past lives is not being used much in the plot. "Daughter of the Emperor" is one of the example. It's better to have the FL born as the daughter of the emperor rather than being Isekai'd since her knowledge of her past life is not going to be useful in the plot.
Despite they are my pet peeves, the love triangle is my guilty pleasure and bittersweet, its fun at first and then get a second male lead syndrome. I hope that in the future manhwas, my no.1 pet peeves will not be repeated and no.4

      2. FL’s who are usually in royal families would always be having goals like “I’m going to run away from this place and live in a tiny cottage in the middle of nowhere” but than all of a sudden ML shows up, FL falls in love with him and moves in with him in his castle like girl bffr, stand up and follow your dreams I beg.

So many peeves so little time
    1) Did This Really Need to Be An Isekai?- MC's past life has so little plot impact you forget that it's an isekai, it would've made more sense to just let them be a person born in that world. It's just an excuse for the author to make pop culture references
2)Adult Reborn as Baby has Baby Love Interests- I don't care if you eventually age them up that's called grooming
    3) Died And Possessed Someone Else- Where did the other soul go? Why do you get a second life but not them? This only works when they possess an unsympathetic villain who no one misses or if they really examine the tragedy of the trope. When the possessee had loving parents who will never realize their child is dead, that's sad af.
(PS I wanna story where the MC is isekai'ed in, makes friends and love interests, but then beloved characters slowly get replaced by other isekai'ed koreans a la body snatchers)
    4) Time Turner/Revenge Fantasies - Everyone is Sooo impressed by how smart the FL is but literally EVErY one of her plans is based on knowing the future
    5) Just Putting Villainess In The Title Doesn't Make Them A Villainess- like OK this nice korean office worker is now possessing a 5yo who Would Have been a villain, but they never do anything villainous nor do they have to deal with fallout from past villainy... sooooooo they not a Villain. And why are you worried about death flags when all ur potential killers are now apart of ur Baby Harem
6)The FL makes a plan in the first chapter and then refuses to ever revise said plan no matter the changing circumstances because the plan is in the title
7)Tyrants and Other Sociopaths- this man just killed 50 ppl to let you know what a Bad Boy he is
8)No World Building in A Genre About Traveling To Another World- I acknowledge that the visual samey-ness of 3d models is a necessary evil, but there's never any mystery to the world, always the same political system, the same city, the same elemental magic/ video game class magic system, the same adventurers' guild, the same magical races/creatures
9)MC Oblivious to Romance- because the only way to gain a Harem is being Denser than a brick, otherwise the audience might think they were a slutty polygamist(this goes for male and female MCs)

Regarding no 3 gotta disagree with you there. Just because their body belongs to those who are unsympathetic villains doesnt excuse the depravity of the trope. Them being evil doesnt mean the posessors have the right to selfishly use their body. Take a look at the virtually all possessive rebirth mcs. They use someone else's body for their selfish means like to experience love, sex. Also even if I agreed with you for argument's sake on that specific point, it won't count as true love.
Lastly I find it ironic how overwhelming most ppl ignore your reply. Not surprising, for the sake of escapism peeps ignore that their favourite characters arent actually the beautiful charming characters they are and that they are a new better version even though they aren't the original which is ironic since possessing someone doesn't mean you are that said someone and that it isn't genuine love. They're gonna avoid all these disturbing facts.

My personal pet peeve is that romance is WAY TOO OVERRATED to the point of me struggling to find a good comic that isnt romance since Im not into that genre.
Im more into fantasy and horror stories like The Dummy's Dummy(Horror), Unfamiliar(Fantasy) and the Tapas comic, Obscured Eyes(Fantasy and Horror).
I wish it was more diverse with the genres but My Next Door Neighbours(Romance) is sort of an exception for me since the creator is an art UA-camr I like watching and the story is good with likeable characters.

Well I’m guilty in loving the isekai genre. 😆 I’ve always liked fantasy settings and I do like romance so when isekai suddenly became this huge trend I was very happy.
I will say that I know it’s been a trend for a while now so I’m sure it’s on the outs. Or at least that people are probably getting tired of it.
I think I will critique it as most stories could be better. Honestly this is a genre that I may never get tired of because it’s just my favorite.
But, I definitely think the stories could be much improved. Probably mainly the world building.
I also actually really like that the isekai genre brought about all these different storytelling ideas. Like a story about creating a laundry service or literally being in a novel. Or even crazy ones like being a spider or whatever.
Basically I enjoy seeing so many different concepts.
It’s really different from the typical stories like Naruto, etc. (which I love too-don’t get me wrong), but I like seeing something kind of unusual too.
I guess maybe I’ve seen too many stories-seen all the classics. So, I’m looking for something new.
The villainess stories, etc. were so great in being a new concept. Although granted it’s not new now.
But, creating a new concept is seriously rare. So, personally I love it how they’re just going for it. New stories.

Thanks for reminding critics to be understanding of the struggles of comic artists as well and how the context of their situation can affect the work. And for reminding the comic artists that critism shouldn't always be a concern or a primary driving force behind their creative decisions.
This positivity is really needed. Making comics is a super demanding and labor intensive process! People don't believe it until they try it for themselves.
Criticism can be helpful but encouragement and understanding goes a long way too.

You know how there are many webtoons or webcomics of gaming systems? They are mostly like a roleplaying game with states, skills, and levels.
The main protagonist is either overpowered, or weak, but has something to make them survive. They may need to be alone, or form a party. They may have things that are outside of the system.
What if there was a story that has a game system, but the main protagonist is not a player, but the creator? What if the game does not happen in their world, but in another?
Would they know or not? If they find out, what would they feel or do?
Still, I will respect people's opinions.

In Caligula, the MC is the creator of this fictional game iirc called Mobius, where he realises he is in another world and must escape. They form a group in his school and stuff, and though the premise sounds super interesting, but imho the execution is lacking and doesn’t make the story interesting enough.

I also like that he doesnt become the main character of the novel, he rather has to deal with the actual main character who is very morally gray.

    1. The setting. It's always the same, cheap European wannabe buildings (though I do think I once saw a French building, it was jarring, to say the least). How about some more original designs for a change?
    2. Boring fantasy elements. It's always the saintess and the witch, the magic tower, monsters/demons and what not. No better magic system either. And don't even get me started on those who have a fantasy game system. It gets old. People reallyyy can't think of anything new or at least something more interesting.
    3. The characters are almost always nobility.
    4. Please, no more Northern Duke. I'm sick of it.
    5. It's supposed to be a fantasy medieval period, but the MC wears some modern-day dresses... And their hair is loose.
    6. Really hate it when little girls have long ass hair.
    7. Side characters are, most of the time, flatter than my table. And by this I mean, they kind of group together some people and make them act as if they're a hive mind (knights fawning over the MC).
    8. Idk I'm too sleepy rn.

It's good to plan out where you want your story to go, know what the end is going to be, flesh out the beginning and the middle at the very least, make it something that can be read again and again and have the possibility to find new things everytime.

I have several pet peeves, some of which might be attacked by some fans.
    1) The overused Isekai plot of being isekai'd into a world where the lead was unsatisfied with what happened in the book and then cleaning up all the messes so the isekai person doesn't get killed AND then being pursued by the very people they didn't want to be involved with, WHO WILL PERSIST IN CHASING AFTER THEM.
    2) The plotline involves heavy "women against women" toxicity who all vie for one male character and go around calling each other "Bitch" and "Wench" and pulling each other down 😑 Can we move on from the misogynistic themes and potray more women solidarity please? It's 2023 already..
    3) Love Triangles.ENOUGH. OF.THIS. ALREADY. It's getting extremely annoying and its always the medioce or lacklustre or toxic lead that is chosen while the actually sweet, down to earth and supportive lead is sidelined. Also why the hell can't creators choose the down to earth sweet and supportive one in their stories? It sends such a bad message too to so many young readers :/
    4) Not every story HAS to end with marriage or dating or KIDS! I wish this was also out there more often.

Agreeing with all the points you're making. Regarding point 4 ill have to say, I can see why virtually all authors make stories that do not have romance nor require it. They have this weird mindset where they tend to over normalize everything and they want to pair their favorite characters together. Which is rather ironic since the way they build up romance is heavily lackluster.

and that story wasn't the only one!! in another story fl and ml couldn't have children between them (but could have them with another people) and i hoped fl will get over her idea of having a biological child just to "fix" her unhealthy relationship with her husband, but turns out they CAN have a child for some fckn reason????? and fl's maniacal obsession of giving birth to her husband's child and her strong refusal to adoption (like she was really angered by the idea of adoption and said she could never love and even acknowledge a child who isn't both her and her husband's by blood) were never adressed. i don't know. i dont think that's normal and healthy mindset but it was painted like it is, well, because she is a woman she obviously just HAS to be obsessed with childbirth and that obsession is something NATURAL cause, well, she is a wOmAn

Here's mine : I think most fiction nowadays (the ones im reading at least) are trying way too hard to explain why we *have* to forgive this villain. They'll throw us some dramatic backstory and ya know... They're suddenly forgiven and became besties with the mc.
For me, a backstory may explain their behaviour, but it doesnt necessarily excuse it. So whenever they throw in a backstory and everything is magically resolved bc "they were always a good guy at heart!"... It feels lazy to me.
I'd love it if the mc doesn't automatically accept them. Just like how zuko was treated by the gaang when he was trying to be better and wanted to join them, they weren't suddenly welcoming him and i think that's very natural! Or maybe even just... Dont give them too much backstories like how disney villains back in the day were! I love classic disney villains because we don't really know what happened to them that made them do these stuffs, but we know enough to enjoy their personalities and what they're plotting!

The 3D model point reminded me of my all time, slightly more specific pet peeve................. webcomic horses. Like basically all of them. I've started a collection of truly abysmal horses I've seen in webcomics (and anime... lookin at you log horizon) and boy is that folder getting long. And I do get it, truly, because horses are one of the worst most frustrating subjects to draw, and as an artist (and someone who was once A Horse Girl who was extremely frustrated by this in my youth) I know firsthand how annoying and wonky their anatomy can be. So I don't necessarily mind 3D models of horses, it's just that there are very few models that actually get it right. I've seen a couple that had the joints backwards, and basically all of them are weirdly beaky?? At this point they could take a cut out of a photograph of a horse and I would be okay, just as long as I don't look at the thing and go "oh god somebody euthanize it." I get time crunches but just. I wish they would find actual references, even if they just trace a stock photo or something.
The villain point also reminded me of the stories (typically isekai) where the MC finds herself in a relationship with the villain, typically to find out He's Not A Bad Guy After All. But there are some where they really... don't do enough to show why the villain is worth being a romantic interest. Sometimes they're just straight up abusive. I remember reading one where the MC went to a festival and slept with a man she didn't know was the king in disguise, and when she finds out who he was and that she's pregnant she flees because the king is a crazy tyrant who straight up murders women basically for flirting with him something something I think he never wants kids or whatever. This man stalks her, manipulates her, threatens her, kidnaps her, etc etc without showing any growth at all. And I'm?? Supposed to believe she falls in love with him???? I've seen at LEAST two or three that start with date rape followed by the guy stalking the MC and basically forcing her into a relationship. These are all framed with flowers and billowing hair and sparkles and hearts and do little to nothing to address that anything wrong happened. Like "jealousy and overprotectiveness-bordering-on-ownership is cute, actually!!!" And not even like in a yandere sort of way, because that's it's own genre and I'm not into it but it at least knows what it is. These tend to frame these actions as Quirks that she may or may not fix by being Good around him, OR that she learns about some generic tragic backstory that really doesn't excuse any of his actions but somehow manages to make her forget about all the awful shit he pulled. Infuriating.

I love the artstyle on the covers you showed! The shapes and the marker-y look of the colors are really nice!
Also! I've got a writing pet peeve specifically for stories involving video games/esports.
It's when the writer seems to forget that the characters are playing a game, and the in-game parts of the story are treated like the characters are getting temporarily isekai'd.
Like, the MCs don't touch gameplay elements beyond surface level aesthetic stuff like parties or raids (which also show up in isekai), they treat certain aspects like they legitimately believe they're real (and not just in an "I am immersed and care about this" way), and the background players act like actual residents of the game world.
And sometimes the MCs pull off stuff that break the worldbuilding of what the game is, like being in an ordinary MMO and defeating an enemy in a way that assumes it actually has a brain and a body. Or assuming the environment is real and doing things like digging tunnels and breaking through walls when that shouldn't be possible with the established setting.
Creates a weird disconnect where in the real-world parts the story treats it like an actual game, but when the MCs are playing it's an isekai with gamer terminology. Honestly I really love stories about video games / game communities, which is why this is a pet peeve for me.

royal isekai is such SUCH a hopeful troupe! Literally the EMBODIMENT of wasted potential! it’s always “fl dies, gets reincarnated in novel she read, becomes the villainess who is a noble, wants to ‘change her life’ somehow, sees the second ml of the novel, falls for the ml who hates her (the ml is always the stoic cool archetype too 😭), removes the ‘walls he built up due to trauma’ yadayada and they get married. Literally, that’s it. It’s like the fl has no other character trait besides swoon over the ml or think that she’s a burden to him. It’s boring and shallow imo. I’m so tired of reading the same thing over and over, I don’t want an fl who’s whole character is marrying the ml or being pushed off by her rivals. I want an fl who can stand her ground and for once, doesn’t require a partner to reassure her of everything all the time!

I tried reading untouchable lady, and the plot is alright, but the fl is so 1D. She only has trauma and family issues.
