I personally think from everything I’ve seen these engines would do far better with a 30 weight oil. 0w-20 is just too thin for a twin turbo engine and the duty cycle for the weight that little engine has to propel. The 20 weight oil is for fuel economy only. A prime example of this is the 1st and 2nd gen ford coyote V8. They used 5W-20 and had quite a few issues with spun main bearings, then for the 21 model year all of a sudden they switched to 5W-30. All the Tundra engines in these new trucks that have gone bad are lack of lubrication. That all tells me they need a heavier weight oil.
Another fantastic video. I have a 24 model and just completed my 1,000 mile break in oil change and normally change the oil every 3,000 miles. after that I am from the old school. Toyota telling everyone 10,000 miles, I knew that was a disaster waiting to happen and like you I rotate my tires at every oil change. Another thing Jim, I clean my MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR at every oil change as well just as a FYI. Paul
Since it’s the first oil change/ break in oil change and no maintenance sign is on. Is there anything I need to do in the settings or nothing is required ?
awesome vid. I have a 2023 platinum and i also do mine every 3k or 4/6months. The only thing I don't do is wheel rotation. I visit the dealer once a year and let them do it.
I just bought a 24 tundra limited with trd off road. I just did my 1st oil change at 4500 miles. I agree with you. I plan on doing it every 5k miles. I wasnt aware that in new car its suggested to change it before the 1k mile mark. If i would have know. I would have it done right away. Oh well better than the 10k mile mark toyota suggested.
5k is perfect... I use pennzoil ultra platinum 0w20. Just changed today... I hit 15k. I did change at 1k to drop the break-in filings out. Also, I put oil on both sides of the rubber oil gasket... some folks forget that filter is metal too.
For as well as Toyota is at engineering, I wish they would just invest a few more minutes and put the dipstick at the front of the engine. My winter beater Corolla, the dipstick is right up front! Its so NICE!!
Also wanted to add, no problem at all using 0-w20 oil. Lab tests have shown it to have great lubricating properties and no issues holding up to long OCI's. Also much better flow in colder months. The old school though of 'thicker oil protect better' is caveman mentality. Prius has been running 0w20 for years and millions of miles, engine failures are extremely rare even upwards of 500k miles. Run it!
Also, Toyotas 10k mile interval is for mostly highway driving with minimal stop and go. For people who do any towing, city driving that consists of constant stop and go, or hauling gear in the bed of the truck, they recommend 5k interval changes.
So where is everyone getting their OEM 90915-10010 oil filters? I assume from the dealership’s parts dept? If not, please post how you’re getting them. thx
10k OCI is no problem at all with the right filter and obviously, any quality synthetic oil. I run my intervals at 7500miles. I've seen oil analysis after 5k, 7.5k, and 10k. The oil is completely fine after 10k. 3-5k is way too short, I like the 7.5k interval. Good video, really nice truck. Thanks!
Its not about the oil handling the longer interval its about the engine handling it. I would never push any turbocharged engine to 10 k the most id ever go between oil changes on a turbocharged engine is 5k.
I don't get the reasoning to heat up your oil before draining it. Your oil had all night to drain into the oil pan and by starting it back up to heat up the oil.. you just making sure that you won't fully drain all of the old oil out because you had just recirculate the oil back throughout the motor by starting it up and now a bunch of the old oil is trap in the passages and crevasses of the motor instead of sitting in the oil pan.
It is ok to buy 2022 !Toyota already came out recall to fix bugs! 23,24 pretty much bug fixed model 😂 and alway stick with 5 k oil change or every 6month! And wear gloves unless you wants to get extra dirty like him lol😂

9:53 EVERY tech is just going to add 8 quarts. 9 oz “overfill” probably won’t even be over the top hash mark on the dipstick.

Agree
I have 2001 GMC Sierra
With 400,000 miles still running strong and I change my oil every 5000 👍👍
thanks for watching
I also agree with 5000 mile interval oil change. Doesn’t hurt. Can only help. Think of it as cheap insurance

Use silicone lube on gaskets, not petrol oil. Petroleum wears rubber.
Agree on 5K oil change.
Thanks for watching, definitely will last longer and better on the turbos

Agree 5000 is a good time to change. If your keeping your truck change early!

5k sounds more like me, thanks again

I bought mine at the dealership
Did you place the jack stands on the axles when doing the tire rotation?
I did on my rear axel, then I used my floor jack on the front one side at a time. Thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM Exactly the way I rotate ,, Mobil 1 & Toyota oil filters , hate the skid plate !!!!
Do you recommend to use the original Toyota oil and oil filter or can I just use any auto parts oil filter?
What I can tell you is I normally get the Toyota filter. If you buy after market, I don’t recommend Fram.
Purolator Boss is a way better filter from the tests I've seen more expensive though.
When you rotate your tires does you tpms still indicate in the proper position?
Sure does thanks for watching
5k miles every time for me , just wondering you don’t put little bit of oil in the new oil filter before putting it on ?
Thanks
I normally do maybe it was pre lubed. Thanks for watching
How much was the oem 3inch lift?
It came on the truck but I think they are around $3000.
Given the issues with main bearing problems on Non Hybrid Tundras, I'm changing my oil every 2500 miles. It may be overkill but it is cheap insurance.
I traded mine in on a 2021
I found the new tundra dipstick very hard to twist out ?
Not difficult to get out but it's definitely difficult to read. The both sides are wildly off

Thanks maybe I will wait a little longer.
Ams oil and mobil 1 have 20k mile oils and filters, ams oil has been doing it forever.
thank you
Welcome!
you are already sold 2007 toyota tundra ?
Traded it in crazy but I just traded the 2022 also for a 2021. I plan on making a video why soon.
@@DIYJIM me too , i am traded it in 2013 tundra and now i have 2024 tundra
@@uaoodl hope you have better luck than I did. I just traded mine in on a 2021.
these are the worst dipsticks. They need grooves so the oil can melt more visible.
Agree thanks for watching
NO on 10K mile oil change! Especially on the twin turbo engine.
Thanks for watching
Mobil1 EP can easily handle a 10k interval
Thanks for watching
I beg to differ.

All you gotta do is take this half of the truck clear off, mind the turbos...
