  • All metal, non-functioning static prop hilt. No electronics just a cool looking cosplay prop! Everything in the video is available at Home Depot and Lowe’s in the US, instore and online.
    PARTS LIST:
    1x Brass Sprinkler Head
    1x 5/16-18 (Corse Thread) Threaded Rod 12”
    1x 1-1/2” Chrome Tube (Plumbing) 12”
    1x 5/16-18 Square Nut
    1x 5/16-18 Chrome Cap Nut
    2x 1-1/4” EMT Set Screw Connectors
    1x D-Ring (probably in art hanging area) with screws
    26x 1-1/2” 5/16 Fender Washers
    2x 2” Flat Washers
    2x Brass Garden Hose cap
    18x 5/16 Flat Washers
    6x 3/8” Flat Washers
    Either 2x 5/16 Set Screw Collar Sleeve
    Or 1x 5/16-18 Long Hexagonal Lock Nut
    Some Electrical tape or 1-1/2” Heat Shrink tubing
    Some flat black spray paint and some matt clear coat spray.
    Masking tape and obviously a few tools.

    I read the thumbnail as "hardware store $4000 all metal lightsaber hilt" and given how insanely expensive some lightsaber replicas are out there I wasn't even going to question that price

    So I finished it, turned out great, I could have never thought this up on my own, I only changed a few things too. I epoxied a 2” washer on top of the sprinkler head and replaced the cap nut with a regular nut, just looked better imo. I also removed the 2” washers around the base along with the along with the fasteners on the EMT connector. It just didn’t look right or feel right in my hands, the diameter of those two pieces just made it awkward for me to hold so I removed them and that made it much better. Wish I could send you a pic. Like I said, this build is great and you did an awesome job, thanks!!!

    Love this! I made a few modifications in my build (used a bumper bolt and another long hexagonal lock nut instead of a square nut as well as filled in the notches and lettering on the sprinkler head, etc.) and weathered it differently than you but this was so fun to build. Love the weight and feel. It is my prized display. Wish I could post a pic....

      How did you fill in the lettering on the sprinkler head? I was going to consider grinding it down in some way.

      @@kle2217 I used a product called SteelStick from JB Weld. It’s a steel reinforced epoxy putty. Once I filled in the lettering, I sanded it all down flush and painted the sprinkler head a metallic gold. Worked great at filling in the sprinkler notches on the edge as well.

    Dude this is one of the best DIY hilt videos I've seen! Any advice for making Graflex inspired ones?

      I did some Graflex type hilts but it was much more trial and error compared to the Obi Wan/ROTJ Luke style. I guess I would say it’s all about finding a cool emitter shroud that will look the part as the rest is really just a stainless tube with greeblies on it and some windshield wiper blades for handle grips.

      Tiger around 5.5-6 inches roughly. But it’s totally up to you.

      Love the build and am currently gathering what I need to make one.
      RE: Pipe length, based on a screen capture and some forensic photoshopping, the tubes used in the video (0:00-0:11) are barely shy of 4.1875" long (approx. 4.16 for the finished hilt and approx. 4.13 for the cut tube in front of it). That's based on the proportion of the lengths of tubes to the lengths of EMT connectors (known dimensions).

    Did you buy a steel galvanized pipe or a chrome plumbing tube? both are similar. Also, where did you cut the tube, because there appears to only be one threaded side when there should be two?

      ETHAN GOODE it’s brass chromed bathroom down pipe and I cut it somewhere around 4.5-5”

      ETHAN GOODE the length of the piece that is used in the construction is roughly 4.5-5” long. I usually buy the 12” piece so that I can comfortably use it for two hilt with a little left over.

    This looks like a great build, however I am a bit confused on the part where you add the first EMT connector. How do you ensure it doesn't move around and how do you ensure it sticks with the washer underneath? I see that you used tape but how exactly did you do that.

      The washer is inside the EMT connector and the pipe pushes the washer tight inside the EMT so it cannot move once you tighten up the bolts.

      The overall length of the hilt can be whatever you want but I tend to go with 11-11.5” roughly.

      JefferyTheKat not if you tighten those nuts well! The amount of pressure it’s under makes it VERY difficult to move any of the components. You could always add some rivets here and there for extra durability if you’d like.

    I found all of the parts on your list. Sadly, it appears Home Depot only sells the EMT set screw connectors in packs of 20. Any source for just one or two?

    Are these parts in the plumber aisle or the electrical area?

      A little of both! The EMT connectors will be in electrical but the sprinkler head will be in plumbing or outdoor. The main tube is also from plumbing. I believe it’ll be near the under sink parts. Good luck!

      Yes, roughly 5” is the final length of the tube.

    questions: How heavy is it? what was the total price of all the parts? What is the length of the "Threaded Rod" and did you thread it yourself?

      At the time of making this video the parts totaled around $40 US. At a guess, It weighs around 1.5 - 2lbs roughly depending on which parts you use and the material they are made from. The threaded rod is available in 12” lengths at most hardware stores and comes pre threaded.

    It’s near the end of 2021. I’ve been watching these “Home Depot” style lightsaber builds since 2008. This is seriously awesome! Hope you see this.
    I plan to make my very own and love your technique; although I’m a little confused on how I could modify it to add in a 7/8 or 1” wooden dowel rod to use as the blade? Can you help me out?

    how do the washers not slide around? They aren't screwed on, so I'm confused as to how they stay centered.

      They are sandwiched tightly once you tighten up the main shaft nuts.

      @@darranrobinson550 Thanks, Darran. I got the EMT connectors. It is the Set Screw Collar Sleeve. You have listed that or the Long Hexagonal Lock Nut. for the top, just under the emitter. I like how the collar sleeve looks better, but the ones I ordered were way too big.

      Jopa 1408 it’s 12 inches when I by it and then I trim down the extra once I’m done, so it ends up somewhere around 11-11.5” long at the end.

      It might take some reverse engineering but I’m sure you could as my other powered models can hold a 1” diameter blade.

    How did you remove the sprinkler head markings?

      I used a Dremel to slowly grind it down and then used a wire wheel to polish it up a little. You could also just maybe fill it in with resin or something like that and smooth it that way.

      It has a substantial weight to it but no more than the hilts sold by Disney at the parks for example.

      @@NicholasIbarra01 also, I once heard that a lightsaber is supposed to feel like swinging a big broadsword so I’d imagine the hilt is heavy enough to balance the “weight” of the blade…or something like that! Hahaha!

      @@MFtheo I’m terrible at guessing! I was brought up in the UK with the metric system but I’ve been in the US for so long that I’ve gotten weights so confused. I’d say it’s under 2lbs (US) for sure, maybe even closer to 1.25lbs maybe?

I’m not sure what part of the process you’re referring to, but I made every single one I’ve don’t in that exactly same way and it works every time.
