Great work!! I decided to have my parents fund it as a birthday present, but I got a cool app for my phone that does the sound effects and I got mine to light up with an actual button. But if it weren't for the guidelines I wouldn't have been able to make this happen. So thank you!!
I really enjoy your videos it's fun to learn how you put your props together and it's nice to see you have a real care for the Star Wars universe also you seem like an amazing father but that could be down to the fact you got your daughter into Star Wars.
Easily one of the nicest hilts I've seen so far. I have most of those parts! I'm now converted to the use of pop rivets... I just hope I can find a cheap rivet gun!
I just recently discovered your rabbit hole of a channel and am currently going through every video! Great work! I hope to see you in the legion someday!
Hey Ron, thanks for watching, and for the kind words, its great to meet another hockey/Star Wars fan! Sadly, I'm a Caps fan. Season after season, I come back to watch the Caps, only to have my heart broken. Maybe one year...Anyway, I love watching hockey, doesn't matter which teams are playing. MTFBWY and good luck on the builds that you tackle!
What's really cool about this build is that you *can* insert the electronics to add light and sound, and can even use the polycarbonate blades for dueling sabers. You only need to change the center metal tube to 1" inner diameter and then change the rest of the pieces accordingly, and run your electronics up from the bottom.
WOW! I'm really impressed with your saber builds. This video was particularly entertaining ( so nice to get the family involved in the fun! ). Keep up the amazing job!
Very similar to the ones I built all those years ago, and still build occasionally. I had a whole website back when this kind of thing was just beginning to take off online. Website is still out there. You have done what I always told my web site visitors to do: walk the aisles of Home Depot and Lowes and get ideas, then get building! Well done and great looking end product! MTFBWY!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment :-) If your website is still online, please share it with us! We are all Star Wars fans and love to see different builds. MTFBWY!
For the cost and time you made a damn fine saber sir. Someone below already said what I was thinking about half way threw, you could easily convert this into a working replica and you wouldn't need much, and you obviously have the skill to do it. If you keep building and refine your skill, very shortly you could start upping the quality and detail just a little, and then start selling them for $600.00 to a $1000.00 easily. Hoth Depot and Lowes Eisley.... Classic. :)
I was thinking the same. The only difference between what he is doing and the guys on Etsy and FB selling their sabers for $600 and up is they typically have access to a machine shop or own a really nice metal lathe, and also put electronics in it (sound board, LED's etc, which could probably be replicated with an Arudino Nano)
As an added safety for your pilot holes, you can also punch mark them and that will ensure your bit does to where the punch is. Makes things a lot easier on slippery surfaces.
Great tip! I could not agree with you more. I used this same pipe on my Boba Fett EE-3 ESB version and used a center punch there. It definitely makes things MUCH easier. ua-cam.com/video/jpHJ6KMtMlk/v-deo.htmlm11s Thank you for the tip!
YES This is the great looking budget saber I have been looking for. Its especially perfect because I am looking at making a Vader saber and this one is perfect considering budget!!
I have to say this is the best look DYI hardware store light saber I have seen. Have you though of putting a few LEDs in the handle and/or a light up switch.
Thing is that this could easily be converted into a working replica and you wouldn't need much. Just some LED's, wiring, switch, a polycarbonate cover for the PVC blade, Something to wrap the LED's in as a secondary difussor, (cause the LED's will shine through the PVC.) So yeah, not that far off from making the other kind, but I get that this is a Prop for filming and you get a much better lightsaber effect post-production
I just stumbled onto your video and you are awesome! The detail that you explain how to make these are great. I subscribed right after watching this! Keep up the great work.
+Jeremy Gunter I'm with you, I like the new one better too :-) The first one has its place, it is a little easier to build. Thanks for watching, glad you were able to use it for Halloween!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! I'm happy to hear that you were able to improve on the design! Way to tap into that imagination! That's what its all about
Did you consider putting any sort of weight inside the hilt to add a little weight to the overall lightsaber? Thanks for the video--can't wait to try making one with my son.
+alh31ful Hello, thank you for the very kind words! I have to admit, I'm having a great time making this channel! I'm trying to get some new/easy lightsaber designs too! Thanks for watching! :-)
I love this! Great video and I dig the parts list so I can mosey on down to any given hardware store and make a nice display piece. I wonder if 'guts' can be used such as sound board and a blade. Is there a tutorial for making a complete saber? I know there are other videos that do show how but, this is an easy to understand video. Very well done. Bad-ass looking prop!
Damn, now you can make lightsaber effects just with Imovies or whatever, but back then in 1980's you had to work a lot to get an "okay" lightsaber effect That's just cool how technologies have improved (Great hilt btw, that's like and subscribe)
Haha, we had a good storm right when I was finishing up the hilt. We were lucky to have filming conditions like that. I usually don't see much snow here in Virginia.
+HappyTrooperDotCom your welcome. Please check also out my lightsaber prop build on here. Just click the tab next to my username. Cool. Be glad of your feedback.
I'm building one of these with my son for his 9th birthday - thanks for the video and the instructions! The still shot of the finished item has a black ring around the bottom of the saber. Was this painted, a rubber grommet, or some other use of the force?
Hello, thank you for watching. My apologies for not listing that part. I will update in the description. I had some leftover O-rings from the saberstaff. I stuck one at the bottom as you noticed. I found it on amazon, although, I imagine you can find these at any home improvement store: amzn.to/1XBWrLm Good luck with the build!
I've seen it done both ways. some used glue and others used rivets. and even sometimes both glue And rivets. guess it depends on the style you want to go for
Hello, happy New Year :) Thank you for watching. I believe that I used a pair of end cutting wire nippers. It provided a nice flush cut on the cable ties. You can also use diagonal cutting pliers. Something a little stronger than scissors. You don't have to cut it perfectly, it can be sanded down to the appropriate length. Hope this helps, stay safe out there! MTFBWY
@@HappyTrooperDotCom Thank you so much for the reply! I have had this video in my watch later for 5 years and this year I was finally able to put some money down and build it, and it is even better than I ever could of imagined to be able to hold it in my own hands. Thank you for providing entertaining and affordable builds for all these years! MTFBWY!
How to make a fan film lightsaber prop 1. Make your hilt 2. Take a long 3/4 inch wooden dowel 3. Wrap it with a thick wad duct tape at 2 points, in order to center it in the hilt 4. Get yourself some SmoothCast resin and pour it into the top and bottom of the hilt, to secure the dowel. I prefer wood blades over PVC pipe blades because long pvc pipe can be flexible. But if you can afford it, a carbon fiber tube is the best blade material - it's so strong that it'll NEVER break no matter how hard you hit it and how strong you are, and it's also very rigid.
I myself have not worked on a blade with LEDs. You can find clear 1/2" PVC online. The best blades for dueling may be from ultrasabers or the custom saber shop. I do not have one of those blades, so I'm not sure how it would mount to this custom hilt. Keep an eye out for +Samurai Jedi Gaming he may be working on a custom hilt UA-cam video with LEDs all at a nice price point.
+350chvey That is awesome, may I ask which parts you used from the Dollar store? I'm always looking for cheap parts to put on a prop! Thank you for watching! :-)
+HappyTrooperDotCom no problem I watched one of you ealyer build videos and then I wanted to build one ha. I just got a 9 bulb led light cause there fairly cheep and work great... if you'd like my build video is on my chanel.
Lol when I used to do plumbing I'd whip these up for kids with spare parts from the truck. They weren't that well done after because I'd spend about 10 minutes on them with what I had like a MacGyver plumbing Jedi.
It's about the outer and inner diameter I'd imagine. If it doesn't slide over, you might have to force it, and if you can't do that, you'd maybe use a hair dyer or hot air gun to warm up the PVC to make it slightly more flexible to push over the metal, that way you'd get a nice n snug friction fit. (You can see in the video that the parts have a bit of room to move and that he used friction tape to make up the difference.)
How did you finish off the end of the blade? Was it just left open, or did you cover it with round bit or something? I made it with my Dad and it looks great! Thanks.
I love the kid's joy at the end. The Parenting is strong with this one.
This build leaves a lot of room for electronics. Loves it.
Congrats! A lightsaber built in the true spirit of Star Wars prop building. Great demonstration. Thank you.
This is exactly what I was looking for! A beautiful looking saber hilt without the hefty pricetag. Great work, thanks for uploading this!
Definitely the easiest yet best looking lightsaber diy tutorial I could find on UA-cam
+Ian Hubbard Thank you for watching...and for the very kinds words! Much appreciated :-)
Great work!! I decided to have my parents fund it as a birthday present, but I got a cool app for my phone that does the sound effects and I got mine to light up with an actual button. But if it weren't for the guidelines I wouldn't have been able to make this happen. So thank you!!
How did you that?
i love your editing style and whenever i look down, i cant do anything else but hit the like button. Thank you making videos
I’m not even building a lightsaber right now, but I just enjoy watching people with talent build lightsabers
I really enjoy your videos it's fun to learn how you put your props together and it's nice to see you have a real care for the Star Wars universe also you seem like an amazing father but that could be down to the fact you got your daughter into Star Wars.
I really appreciate the attention to detail on this! Great job!
You're so creative with what you use! You could be a prop builder.
That's impressive it looks really good. Unfortunately where I live we don't have a store like that to be able to get all this stuff.
Easily one of the nicest hilts I've seen so far. I have most of those parts! I'm now converted to the use of pop rivets... I just hope I can find a cheap rivet gun!
You did an awesome job. Best DIY saber I've seen using common hand tools and parts from home improvement stores.
Thank you for watching and for the nice comment, I appreciate it! Good luck and have fun if you take on the project.
I just recently discovered your rabbit hole of a channel and am currently going through every video! Great work! I hope to see you in the legion someday!

Very clean & elegant. I ll borrow 1 or 2 ideas for my hilt

you inspired me to build my own and each one I build gets better and better, thanks for the tutorial man it's much appreciated :)
I must do this over the summer!
Great video..best part is that child at the end with that joyous laughter 🙂
Really excellent work! Nice design and very nice craftsmanship!
Lowe's Eisley xD Awesome build man! I tried it out and i'm now producing a fan film with it! Love your DIY videos!

I really like the control box, I’m sure it would do good during 1977 during anh filming, love it

best looking home depot saber ive seen. i ordered esb grios for 10.00 for mine. they came with allen screws and really make the saber look real...
Thanks for another great build and easy to follow instructions!
2:38 - "Well nuts" ... this is one of those jokes that only really works in print, but I got a giggle.
Seriously, though, well done! I like it.
Cool! Hoth looks like a nice place to live!
ever considered custom-making and selling these? i know i'd buy one
I always wanted a nice hilt, thanks for introducing me to the sink tail piece😏
Great job, one of the best tutorials I have seen, will be building mine from your instructions 😀👍
this makes me really want to make my own lightsaber, the one you just made looks really good.

Could you do one with pvc & led blade please ?

I can't thank you enough for this. Super easy to follow. Thanks again!
I'm sure buying pipes and screws will get you on some kind of list
That's actually a criteria for me. If someone isn't on at least a couple of government lists, I'm not sure they can be my friend...
Is it like the Super Mario Bro’s movie, where plumbers are illegal?
dude that's really cool! guess I've got myself a new project to work on. you've made a new fan to your videos!
Great job best part of this was the time spent with the family
You deserve more than 11,000 subscribers you should have 100,000 instead! Keep up the great work!
I love this so much! I'm going to take the idea for the control box and grip ideas for different designs of sabers. Thank you so much!
Like a damn nerdy Bob Villa or This Old Yankee Workshop.....and I loved every minute of it.
Awesome build! One of the best Builds on here!
Thank you so much for sharing this, amazing details with very little cost.
You can get black pop rivets or just about any standard color.
David Hollowood I mean I get what you mean but also I actually like the silver pop rivets
Double thumbs up for those store name puns.
This is great. I prefer this one over your other two. I used your single one as a prop for my halloween costume, turned out great.
+Jeremy Gunter I'm with you, I like the new one better too :-) The first one has its place, it is a little easier to build. Thanks for watching, glad you were able to use it for Halloween!
Amazing work on the hilt it’s a good design and build
Very nice tutorial, and the end product looks amazing! Keep it up, you got another well earned sub today ;)
Thank you for the kind words, much appreciated!
Runner-up for the Dad of the year award, I guess
Awesome video! and great AE work!
Thanks for the vid. I created my first, but with the t-grips, and painted the electronics copper. It came out great.

This is going to be a great birthday present
Sweet! Mount it on a custom display rack...thanks for sharing this info bro!
Could you please do a Home Depot or Lowe's or other DIY affordable version of Jyn Erso's A-180? I love the design and would like to cosplay with that.
this was both adorable and helpful
thats a really nice finish. Very professional
excelente trabajo muy bueno tu video. ojala pudieras hacer otros modelos

any ideas on a obi wan style with home depot or Lowe's parts?
great way to make a lightsader.I have already made one and my friends want me to make them one too
Very impressed that's some ingenuity.

would you secure the windshield wipers with rivets or would you glue them?
I've seen it done both ways. some used glue and others used rivets. and even sometimes both glue And rivets. guess it depends on the style you want to go for

Would u be able to put leds and sound inside the lightsaber

You are a legend. We need more plumbers like you.
It's such a shame plumbing parts are so different here in the UK. i've had to go as far to use a henry hoover tube and a curtain pole
Hoth Depot and Lowe's Eisley! Oh shit! hahaha!! you are the king for that!
If the metal is 1 1/2 inch and so I’d the pvc pipe , how will it fit over ?
It's about the outer and inner diameter I'd imagine. If it doesn't slide over, you might have to force it, and if you can't do that, you'd maybe use a hair dyer or hot air gun to warm up the PVC to make it slightly more flexible to push over the metal, that way you'd get a nice n snug friction fit.
