Fox GRIP2 vs FIT4 / Which is best for you?

  • For 2019, Fox offers two different dampers in their Float 36 forks; the GRIP2 and the FIT4.
Although the GRIP2 damper is brand spankin' new and feels amazing, I believe it may not be the better choice for some riders.
Check out the video to figure out which will be better for you while you're either upgrading your current fork or building up a new bike with some sweet Fox suspension!

Best fork I have tried is the Rock Shox Judy on my old bike, now I got a Suntour coil on my new bike. I think I will be more than happy with any Fox 34 FIT4/GRIP2 model I will choose as my upgrade. Bought the cheapest version of a good-framed branded mtb on sale, to choose the upgrades that I want, instead of getting a high-end version, with only so-so parts.

Great video! I've got the Fit4 from 2018, but it has the same HSC, LSC dampening control as the Grip2 in your video (just not the independant hi/lo rebound adjuster), so I guess my fork is for the rider between A and B!

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  5 років тому +1

Hey Kit! The damper you have is referred to as their FIT HSC/LSC. This damper has been phased out to the new GRIP2 damper which is the upgraded replacement for that damper in the Fox lineup.
That damper was great too! If you ever feel like you'd like to have that adjustable high-speed rebound, you can easily swap out your damper with a GRIP2 which you can order from me @ misterlost.com/forks/2019-fox-36-grip2-damper-upgrade-kit

Good vid. Rider A vs B is a solid philosophy to start with. I've tried both forks and really liked both. Where I believe Grip2 is better is with Big brands that are just borrowing geometry trends from niche brands & haven't thought through the overall kinematics & thus extra adjustment is well appreciated or just super OCD Type A riders. Fit4 is terrific for good niche brands because the geometry & kinematics is painstakingly thought through. For example Pivot or Transition, loved Fit4 on those bikes, yet those brands really think through everything & thus you pay more but get more which equals less to think through on settings vs. big brands. My 2 cents. Totally OK to disagree cause if you do...just means you,'re passionate abt Mtb 🤘

Before watching this video, I had my heart set on getting the Grip2 damper, but now I’m not so sure. My current fork (34 Rhythm) has the Grip damper (basically only a lockout lever and rebound adjust) and I’m pretty happy with it. I mainly want Factory for the lighter weight as well as to match to the Kashima of my DPX2 shock, so I think I may just go with the Fit4

I just bought the 36 in 150mm with fit4 because bizarrely fox wont sell the grip2 as 150mm but they told me i can buy it as a 160mm and then get a shorter air piston to reduce the travel to 150mm. This makes no sense.

Nice review. I have the Fit4 on a 34FOX and love it and pretty much just set it and forget it. I only weigh 160 and my trails are not that aggressive plus it’s on a hardtail. I’m actually building another hardtail SS and see the new 34FOX has the Grip2 option. I don’t know if I would notice the marginal improvement on a Grip2 so I’ll probably just get another Fit4.

    This is a great guide.
I have a question about how this relates to the 2019 Fox 34 forks. On the 36 forks, the Grip2 is more expensive than the Fit4, which is totally understandable. But, on the 34, the Grip fork costs less than the Fit4. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Is the Grip Damper on the 34 fork anything like the Grip2 on the 36 fork?
I'm definitely a Type B rider. I currently have a Float 32 CTD on a 2015 Trance 2 and I'm thinking I might update it. I like being able to lock out the fork, so it seems like the Fit4 would be best for me.
    Thoughts?

  • @aleszverca

Hey Mike, I'm thinking about the Grip2 after seeing the review. I do a lot of looong climbs on paved roads to get to the top of my trails(DH world cup rated).
Currently I ride a 34 Fit4 and because of paved roads I really appreciate the lockout feature of the Fit4.
How would you compare the lockout of the FIT4 vs GRIP2 with closed compression dials(Is it strong enough to not give when stand pedaling up hill?)...? Thanks ✌

In opposite with low speed , below 25km/h feels less comfortable.

I had my 2015 fox evolution fork upgraded to a fit4 damper, but it doesn’t play well with the twinloc (it’s a scott spark) after the upgrade. I cannot use some of the travel (about 20%) although sag is set to 20% which is plush for a fox fork. It also hesitated to “unlock” for a while after each lockout, getting back to normal only after a few hard jumps. When i took it back to lbs who installed it (they sent the fork to authorized dealer for the upgrade), they said they fixed the problems, but it’s now even worse… now the lockout has no effect and i still can’t use some of the travel. Any idea what may be wrong?

fit4 rider on 120mil 34 here. Now that we can upgrade to grip2 too, this has become a question. Honestly, I think I have much more to gain by tuning the spring rather than changing the damper. Look at you, Vorsprung Luftkappe! Should make it more subtle off the top and give mid-stroke support. I tried relying on the damper for support, but it just makes the whole thing feel sluggish and not active at all.

Isn't the sr suntour durolux r2c2 basically a grip 3 damper? It has high and low speed compression as well as high and low speed rebound. It also has a negative coil .

In Factory spec, there is only the FIT4 damper for 34. In lower tier Performance series the GRIP damper has a simpler compression lever (incrementally open through to locked) with no low speed compression adjustment.

Thank you for this video I have been wondering about switching from my fit to a grip damper. I am definitely type A though not as bad as the guy in the video but it is all about the suspension for me

Haha yeah those characters were super over-dramatized! The GRIP2 damper is pretty badass!
If you do consider the damper upgrade, you can order one from me on our website @ www.misterlost.com/forks/2019-fox-36-grip2-damper-upgrade-kit

@@TheLostCo Yes I’ve checked them out already on your site. At this point in my life I have to decide now whether I want to continue upgrading what I have or sell and get and e bike. But at that time I’m sure the E bike will also need an upgrade as I am so geeky about suspension! Thanks to folks like you we have lots of choices!

Great video! I have no,problem with the high and low compression. The hi and low rebound are giving me a fit! Got it where I fell good cuz out trails here in the east are so rocky and rooty and not much dirt. Should I try a shock, wiz? I always go by way it feels but the rebound shit got me crazy!

thanks I currently ride a 7 years old cross-country fully home upgraded to fox factory 34 120mm fit4 (to keep the original 120-120 geometry) but looking at an emtb I definitely want more travel and smoothing, hearing what you say I would not want a grip2 on a muscular bike as the locked and float settings are game changers for pedaling power did 60 miles 4770ft recently worst slope was 18% you do not want pedal pumping on that uphill >< for a muscular bike used to climb mountains on road or hard terrain and descent on wherever I want grass dirt off trail (I bike hike if you get what I mean) i deflated slightly below my recommended fox weight pressure, lock or float to ascend with rebound to stiff then unlock all and set rebound to fast for descent it's not bad for cross country, at recommended fox pressures I get very good pedalling uphill but the (4770ft) downhill was rough on my rear and shoulders, I can easily guess the high low speed settings of the grip 2 would help fix my too harsh too soft problem I'll keep that in mind for the emtb and will watch your setup guide thank you very much

@The Lost Co. I just bought a 2021 Cannondale Trail SE 2 bike which has a Rock Shox 35 Silver R, 120mm, 15x110 thru-axle, 51mm offset. I want to switch the fork to a Fox fork but I’m having trouble deciding which is the best fit Fox fork for that bike. I know I am a B type rider so I’d want the Fit4 and I also know I’d like to go with a Step Cast. I don’t mind spending the money on the Factory Fox forks but I prefer the black stanchions so the Performance Elite or Performance will be what I’ll likely choose from. My main question is should I get a 32,34 or 36? I have no clue what size stanchion best suits that bike. I weigh 205lbs and I use the bike to get back and forth to work and keep in shape and on days off I ride it in trails in state parks I go to. My bike has 120mm travel, would you recommend staying at 120mm? My local bike shop that just closed said he won’t go above 130mm on that bike. Also a lot of the blacked out Performance Elite or Performance forks have 44mm offset and mine is 51mm offset, should I make sure I get a fork with 51mm offset or could I use 44mm offset?

Complicated situation; My wife and I are building a tandem for Sea Otter. Can a 36 handle that type of load? Or would you just go straight to a 40? I’m about 140lbs, she is maybe 110lbs.
Additionally, is grip 2 and Fit4 even options on the 40?

I so hope i can get hold on a FOX grip2 damper fork with my bike im gonna by now. Stock it comes with a FIT4 damper apparently, even when the site itself for the bike says ''GRIP damper''. Maybe i can upgrade it for alittle more money.
Becouse i come from Motocross background im very used to high and low speed both compression and rebound so this fork would be awesome for me!
