What do I believe makes a competent vocalist in K-pop?

- In this video, I will explain what I believe makes a competent vocalist in K-pop and why I think it's wrong to say that a singer with a lower register isn't as good as one with a higher register. I will also be talking about the more extreme position, that if someone has a lower register, they can't sing well or they're not a good enough singer to pay attention to compared to singers who can hit super high notes.
If I've missed any important points or left anything out, please feel free to add your thoughts to this discussion.
DO is my favorite vocalist not just in KPOP. His voice is amazing ! In my opinion, no one is singing as soulful as him.
D.O. Is the member who got me interested in EXO when they debuted in 2012. I had never heard a singer with that kind of talent and voice in K-pop before, even now, I love Baekhyun and Chen, but D.O. is my boy. Every time he has a line in a song, I get happy anticipating it.
Agreed. He has a once in a lifetime type of voice.
Kyungsoo is really something unique, SM themselves have been trying to re-discover that voice and even atp thrice promoted debuting idols as being the new D.O. but never once succeeded. It's a shame they derailed his singing career for so long, but so proud and full of expectations now that he's making it priority under his own company.
Regarding competence in exo - one only needs to watch a live show - anyone who's seen exo live knows whose showing competence. Kyungsoo is the backbone of exo's whole sound and having listened to cream soda and particularly the recording behind - his falsetto happens to currently be the most comfortable of the group. It's impossible to go back and check because exo mainly sang according to part but now that they've made these solo endeavours it's quite clear currently Kyungsoo has a higher range than one would think and the most likely reason he was on so much of the lower parts is purely due to his versatility. Nobody else can switch between range like him.
D.O. aka Doh Kyungsoo by far is my top 1 vocalist. Eventho his vocal range not as wide as Chen and Baek or other wide vocal range singer.. but what make him stand out to me is his vocal tone, soulfullness and his run. His vocal tone alone make me love all song he sang rightaway, whatever genre it is. No songs he sang failed to me even its his own songs or just covers. But for others, not all their solo discography i like, but its trully because of my personal taste. Like IU said, Kyungsoo songs are easy to listen and look simple but if u tried to sing it, its actually hard.

My fave man vocalist so far are D.O. and chanyeol. After that Chen.
For woman singer my fave are Lee Suhyun of AKMU and then IU and Ailee.
I’m so glad you brought up Chanyeol! He has a raspy, yet soulful voice that is so interesting to listen to, and he is another vocalist that is slept on. I think he deserves a video just for him. People NEED to see just how vocally talented Chanyeol is. He’s not just a rapper, he’s a secret weapon vocally just like Kai. SM should have done more to promote Chanyeol as an established vocalist.
I will definitely do videos talking about international artists vocals, both male and female artists.

Chanyeol is definitely my 2nd fav after Kyungsoo. I just absolutely adore both of their tones. Skill is certainly needed but I don’t need a vocalist to hit a bunch of high notes. I just need their voice to resonate with me.
It's funny because Chen is a weird case where people know him as the loud pitch super high note belter, but in fact, his lower and middle registers are even better. Showing that the ability to sing high notes overshadows other aspects of singing
That’s so true. He has a unique tone to him, and can execute lower notes like at the beginning of ‘Going Crazy’ I was shocked to hear him sing in such a low register with such ease. Usually high note singers aren’t as good with low register notes, but Chen did so well in that song. Also I have two of Chen’s albums and he is such a graceful singer, really I am in a continuous state of being impressed by him.
As for D.O. being compared with other Vocalist. There is a simple rule. EXO main line can sing any song easily. But none can sing an EXO song easily or better. That includes NCT (who will acknowledge it). As one producer said - no one sings like EXO and D.O.'s runs are ....

Also, DO can sing well. I still can't believe some people say these idols can't sing well or at all. People like that just enjoy bringing the idols down. It's like a game for them to say whatever they want online and hide behind a screen. I stopped reading the comments on UA-cam videos, especially for K-pop music. I honestly don't care for the comments anymore. There are some good comments and others are just horrible, it's better to not get involved.

Baekhyun and D.O are my ult biases in EXO. And EXO is my fav group ever. Amazing voices, personality, discography. I love them.❤❤❤
Kyungsoo can hit those high notes too. He just sings in lower key than BH and JD. Plus no one thinks he can't sing. If there is, he / she is an anti. The line distribution is mostly entertainment company politics and not pure talent base. Kyungsoo in his group's early days sang tons of lines. It went less and less the moment he tries to be more independent like when he started to become an actor. The company hated it when they cannot cow money from Kyungsoo. That is why for me they give him lesser and lesser lines even than the lead vocalists of the group. See why he left the company. But look at him now thriving and slaying both as an idol and an actor.

D.O got the best vocal for me. I'm not qualified to compare them for I have no enough knowledge regarding analyzing vocal tones, range, style, or any other related factors in singing but as I watched Reactions to kpop idols being reacted or analyzed by professional vocal coaches, singers or anyone who have enough idea about it, they always love D.O. They praise him and even use his technique as an example. And I felt the same with them because everytime he opens his mouth, I'm getting goosebumps. His voice is very soothing and I felt his emotions. I just love hearing him sing all the time.
I love your comment so much, because like you, I, too, am a layman when it comes to the proper way to analyze things like vocals and such. I know a little bit, but not enough to consider myself an expert in vocals, in any sense, but when I listen to D.O. I recognize why I love his voice and I look to find a way to explain why I love his voice.
And honestly I don’t think anybody is truly qualified to compare vocals because it just becomes the breeding ground for arguments, misunderstandings, fan wars, etc. even some of the comments under this video have been misunderstandings of what I’ve said, even though I haven’t compared anyone’s vocals.
I have a love and appreciation for each vocalist in. EXO, of course DO is my guy, but that doesn’t mean that Baekhyun and Chen don’t have a place on my list of top to your vocalist. I love them all equally.

Vocal stability I thought was associated with dancing/movement at same time as singing. Which again EXO excel in. But I am happy to have the correct definition. e.g. EXO Gravity

Chen has one of the best if not the best lower register among kpop vocalists. Kpop songs are usually sung high key so he isn't able to showcase it much in exo songs. He does use it more in his solo music though.
D.O is my favorite Exo and whoever says that he doesn't sing well is that he is deaf, not only with listening to his first solo album but also his second or third album and collaborations that you have is incredible, there are people who say that he does not make an effort and the thing is that he does not have to make an effort as sometimes it seems that Chen strives with some high notes (I don't say it, I've heard it from some vocal coaches) D.O knows perfectly how to sing so that what is not seems simple...
I agree 💯 with you 👏 D.O is such a soul full singer and very talented...that's why he is my Ultimate bias in Exo.
Chen, Baekhyun and D.O. are my favorite singers. I think Doyong and Taeil have amazing voices. Jonghyun had an incredible voice too and is not Chinese.

You're so right about Jonghyun's ability to fit the genre. Every time I listen to 'Aurora' from the 'She Is' album you can feel the influence of Prince.
Yes! ‘Aurora’ definitely has that prince like feel to it and Jonghyun knew how to help create that feeling by singing in a way that is very reminiscent of prince, but in Jonghyun’s own special style and vocal tone. ‘Moon’ as well, It’s brilliant.
This is why I hate some exols who compare between D.O., Chen and Baekhyun. Sure, Chen and Baek can definitely belt those notes but you can't compare D.O.'s runs and riffs to them. They have their own strengths and it's nonsense to compare them just to justify who you think is better. The three of them are just the best on their own league.

His A4 note in For life live as well was so resonate and supported that I almost believed it was prerecorded and stabilized (which is not true, man sang it LIVE), his belt in Rewrite the stars, MAMA and Love me right were literally so supported as well. D.O advantage is his agility, he has the best agility in kpop in general, no one touch him at agility, his voice timber, highnote as in belting, (Idk about falsetto tho, I think Baek is better) his runs and riffs, and his tone damn his tone is so R&B funk coded that it's a shame he hasn't pulled a R&B album yet and destroyed the kpop best vocal debate.
Totally agree. They all bring something of their own personal vocal talents to the group respectively.

@@moonlight_antonio I just wanted to inform u that I was trained in Indian classics so I'm atleast familiar with vocal techniques and tones better than some here. I'm seeing a lot of Baekhyun stand bashing u in the comments because you said something about him apparently(?)😭
Idk why they're so offended at saying Kyungsoo is better in R&B which is a fact but please watch it out for them negativity with the contents you're making. Always supporting your work tho!

I really get disappointed after tempo especially and how it was unfair for kyungsoo like he get a one line and other member singing in the back and ad-libs just
no screen time or even visible in the dance
I really loved the album but after that it was getting worse like HMO for example even dftf album when there is just two main vocalist

The company pushed him back, even in terms of promotion as a singer he had nothing to compare to chen and baekhyun
so the fandom start to question his position as a main vocal in exo even said that suho is better than him
it's not really just about high notes
so if you become a fan after tempo for example you will know how good chen and baekhyun as a vocalist when there is nothing for kyungsoo in that song maybe you will not notice him especially those who don't know anything about singing or notice his ad-libs
I believe everything has changed after 2023 kyungsoo get chance to promote himself as a singer and everyone noticed how good he is as a singer

Thank you for your reaction and for opening up a discussion about this. I am not a vocal coach but I like to sing and I love music. A singer is good to me is one that they make me feel something when they sing. I tend to lean towards more soulful voices. Those are the types of voices I was raised listening to and that resonates more with me.
Same, I was raised listening to soulful R&B and gospel type vocalists, so when I heard DO sing in ‘What Is Love’ I was blown away by how much soulfulness he has within his voice. He drew me to EXO.
same thing goes to BTOB, we didn't compare who is the best vocalist because we know each of them have different specialty. they have 2 tenor(Eunkwang & Changsub) and 2 baritone(Hyunsik & Sunghae) main vocalists. But people outside the fandom usually acknowledge the tenors' more than the baritones' Thankfully that most of their songs were composed by the members so they can utilised their talent in each song. Each chorus will be sang by different vocalist.
I agree. Singing high notes is nice, but it isn't everything. When I think of vocal range as a way to judge someone's ability, I think of their entire range. Like Baekhyun can sing very high, but he also has a very good lower range. If you are going to use range to judge someone, it can't just be how high can they sing, because some people's voices are just lower. D. O. has a lower speaking voice than Chen and Baekhyun so it makes sense to me his singing voice wouldn't reach as high. What I think is truly impressive when it comes to range is how wide your range actually is.
I think part of the problem is Kpop generally favors singers who can do mid to higher ranges. They don't utilize the lower range voice for much more than rapping and harmonies. Otherwise the deeper voices stay in the middle. I heard once that V from BTS is basically a baritone voice constantly singing in a tenor range because that's how most of the group's music is. That is also what the industry likes.
It's not just the company giving parts to some group members and not to others. Sometimes the group members choose to not have many lines and stuff like that. Sometimes it's their choice.
I love Baekhyun
In NCT 127 Taeil has a higher range than doyoung, but doyoung's tone is softer than Taeil and SM prefer doyoung's tone than Taeil's. Just like AESPA. Wintercan sing higher than ningning, but ningning's tone when hitting high notes sounds less force and it's more pleasing to the ear than winter's.
Ah! okey, I've listened to Taeil and Doyoung but because they are both so similar in vocal range but not in vocal tone, I had a hard time with noticing which of them sang higher. I was almost sure it was Taeil, but it's Doyoung. Thank you for this comment.

😆bless - I think you have got caught up in associating vocal/tiers with High notes. Not sure who is criticizing D.O.'s singing ability cos most people would just laugh. For the last decade EXO's main line vocalists have been acknowledged as the best in the industry. D.O Chen & Baekhyun have been analyzed by vocal coaches to the hilt. Chen is technically the best in Kpop (high & low registers), D.O. & Baekyun swap 2 & 3 positions depending on the analyst. D.O.'s unique ability is his vocal agility "Tell me what is love", his pronunciation of vowels especially in different languages, rap as well as high notes "rewrite the stars". In addition, EXO has vocalists across the board with different textures giving harmonies that will never be heard in a male group again. Note Highest note singer is Xuimin in EXO not Baekyun or Chen

Yeah, some people actually do think that DO is not as good as, or on par with Baekhyun or Chen because he can’t sing as high as those two, it’s a shame. My point was higher doesn’t mean better, it just means higher. That said, DO is my favorite vocalist in EXO since 2012.
Yeah, I got caught up in two different kinds of conversations and put them together haha. This is my first time doing a conversation about vocals in K-pop so I’m a little wet behind the ears with this new kind of Contant. But it’s content that I’ve been wanting to make for a long time just to get off of some of the serious stuff that I talk about.

Baekhuyn is my choice. He is talented, consistent, and improving in every aspect of an all-around singer.
I agree about the assessment with Taeil, I prefer his tone than Doyoung but higher range singer definitely has more lines.
What I mostly gravitate towards are vocal colors. I know that Jimin for example is not the most stable vocalist but his tone is just so special that I prefere his vocals over technically better singers.
Ah! I forgot about vocal colors! I agree, Jimin isn’t a stable vocalist, but he can still sing. Even if a singer is lacking one aspect, if they have the other aspects of singing and vocal technique down, they can still sing competently. Jimin knows his voice and limitations and doesn’t try to make his voice do things that it can’t do, so I have much respect for him in that regard. He’s another underrated singer in my opinion.
@@moonlight_antonio another aspect of singing is how you deliver your lines. The audience can sence the authenticity and if you are connected to your song. That's why a vocal teacher of mine had me study the lyrics.
Yes! Actually, I recently watched a show where ONEW sang a song that was written and sung by someone else. It was a woman who originally sang the song, but he sang it on the show.
Even though he sang it in a lower key, he sang it with such emotion and understanding of the lyrics that at the end of the song he cried.
He then explained that he interpreted the lyrics in a way that applied to his situation when he was on hiatus from SHINee due to his poor health. He sang it so passionately that I even teared up haha it was amazing, but it speaks to what you mentioned about being able to deliver the lyrics in such a way, that the listener feels what your singing.

you’re clearly not familiar with most of exo’s music cause using baekhyun as an example of a vocalist being “more pushed” makes no sense considering he NEVER had the most lines in ANY exo album until obsession - 2019 (and that’s because d.o wasn’t there.) 😭

the reason people believe baekhyun was more pushed in exo is only because he’s always been a fan favorite both in exo and as a soloist.
it feels very odd to use him as an example as if he’s not objectively one of the most skilled vocalists in kpop and very much NOT only good at high notes. he actually has a very controlled lower register as well, not to mention his agility all throughout.

I disagree. I believe until Exok and exom merched, he got less lines likely because he hasn't improved yet at that time and was trained for lesser than other vocalist. Than when both merched, he and chen got them high notes and lines, ig kyungsoo is more of a adlib guy in exo songs after that. Even in eldorado, drop that or miracles in December it was clearly seen that Chenbaek got them lines.
I also believe Baek is kinda pushed up, not in a bad sense but I'd say promotion.
He's even part of SuperM which I thought if they choosed a better one it would have been Chen but no, I don't mean baek is any less or lower.
He has the best vocal versatility & color so far and nails every genre, and he get lines. Tbh I even believe Suho gets more lines than Kyungsoo, if not for D.Os adlibs, he won't even be known by people as main vocalist because of his lack of lines. Example hear me out.
I said I believe that DO got pushed further and further back over time, especially in ‘War the power of music’ era and ‘love shot’ era. I noticed it before DO went into the military, that his lines lessened with those two albums mainly.
If you don’t think so, that is fine. I have listened to EXO for years (as I’m sure you have as well), you have your belief and I have mine. If you think I’m wrong, that’s fine too, but I won’t tell you that if you disagree with me then you know nothing about EXO or that your not familiar with they’re music, so let’s not turn this discussion into a (you don’t know what your talking about) type argument because it’s really not as serious as that. I have a bias for all the vocalist, I simply pointed out something (I) noticed with DO’s lines in EXO’s discography that’s all. Let’s chill ok? Lol
They all have they’re different colors and styles of singing that they bring to the group, so I’m not a person that prefers one singer over the other.
My point was singers shouldn’t be judged as better than or worse than based on who can sing higher. That’s the point of the video. That’s why I talked about DO, Baekhyun, and Chen in the first place.
I agree with you. Some of the lines that DO got were not even lines, it was add Libs, riffs, and runs. And i think Baekhyun became the voice of EXO in a sense that his voice became showcased more than any other member’s voice. Perhaps it’s a case of (the fans spoke, the company listened), and I think that’s how that went basically. Like you, I also don’t believe that Baekhyun was pushed up in a bad sense, I just think that DO kind of got reduced to Mr. ad lib guy, and a line here and there overtime.
@@moonlight_antonio totally agree, I'm a huge funk R&B person, even though the first member I discovered was Baekhyun and his album for my friends suggesting due to me liking R&B, it doesn't hit the spot until I heard Kyungsoo, there's just that tone that's been trained and brought up in a specific genre that u can't miss, esp his agility and soul voice. It's after Baekhyun that I discovered exo in late 2021 and ran through their discography, I just realized that Kyungsoo had literally just ahh ohh yea like this oh yea over every song background but no proper lines before enlistment and him being treated as sh!t until he said fxck it and left for military early to come back soon and get back on his new acting project. Seeing their old XOXO era, those were the times when atleast those lines were fair for the vocalist 🤡

Baekhyun is the most competent, DO' stan think he is the most soulful lol. Did u really think so, did u hear iBaekhyun's songs, espcially his solo and OST's? U better listens each of thier songs first. It's ok to stan DO, but stop comparing, as a exol i love all of them, but of course my bias is Baekhyun. Baekhyun has been chosen to sing National anthem 3 times and 1 American anthem. Obviously, he is good andhe was chosen not just by fans but with a very good music teachers. They could have chose Chen, DO, or other verygood vocalist in the country and not Baekhyun, right there, its a chosen by professional musician, not just fans or vo al coach or teacher. It is chosen by professional mucisian in the country withour favoritism at all! So ucannot downgraded Baekhyun's ability to sing. Like Stray Kids says: Baekhyun, the vocal god, why they say that? Obviously they listens, lol!

One of the clues I know when a kpop idol is a good or great vocalist is that if they can produce a stable vibrato constantly. Every great singer in the world uses vibrato a LOT when singing. It's just a basic technique if you know how to sing. You'll be surprised on how many kpop idols struggle or can't even do this basic singing technique . 💀
@@zeid9828 ayo this so true, it's just not about the vibrato, but tbh vibrato is more used by pop artist often. Leaving vibrato aside, some kpop idols don't even have normal proper technique such as pitch control, rhythm, diction or dynamics. Even during behind recordings or stage performance as well, I've seen fan praise artist for vocals but it's more like "oh I like his/her tone than she must be the best among them" Ahh opinion rather than knowing techniques 🤡
