Finally, someone who does it right. As a retired Ford Senior Master Tech this guy "Shop Talk" gets my award for best proper way. (I would do it this way)
Nice Video, started to reinstall my 04 Navigator yesterday, it's not fully installed. I will drop tank back down and extend the fuel line. I will also consider extending the rear line with the Green clip. One is shorter than the other. I also had so much trouble with diagnosing that I forgot to change the fuel filter. My problem may be fuel relay or something else. Much Love for Your Video. Very Clear and understandable, the detail is GREAT!. THANK YOU SO Much.
I have watched a few videos on wiring in a new fuel pump relay and you are the only one that shows all of the right wires to bypass the ford relay, thanks for putting out a quality video.
Just want to say thank you so very much for such a fine video. I seriously thank you. This video saved me probably $900+ in repairs. There are other videos on the subject but yours was by far the most comprehensive, well presented and simple/straight forward video out there. This worked like a charm and cost me only $28 to fix my Lincoln Navigator. I now realize the first symptom was a faint electrical burn smell in the car. I smelled it for almost two weeks before my car finally stopped running. Other videos gave you the basic wiring principles on a relay but the great thing about yours is that your approach was to have the external relay working just like the original, internal relay. You ran the wires to and from the PCM so the PCM would send the signal to the relay and manage it just as intended. Also, thank you for adding that you have been running your vehicle for 5 years with this external relay. That gave me a great sense of security. Again, thanks for a great video and diagrams you presented.
Thank you so much for this extremely well thought out and detailed video! You just helped me fix my son's truck and saved him the better part of $1,000! If anyone is worried don't be, it took me longer to gather the parts at the store and watch the video a few times (taking notes) than it did to do the repair. Great video and THANK YOU again!
Thanks for taking time to make this video. I did this to mine, sure i had it fixed cause i jumped the grn yel wire to 12v and drove it home. Wire in a relay, and would not start. Cut hole in floor and check for 12v and gnd. Replace fuel pump. Runs now. No small task. Thank you again for this detailed information!!!
I’ve been trying to figure this out for two years I was going off of a different wire for pin 86 That was hot in start and run and 85 which is the negative was just grounded to the metal on the car so the ground was always grounded therefore the fuel pump would stay on if you didn’t turn the key off I was afraid to let my daughter drive the car but not anymore thank you so much for this I read so many wiring diagrams and videos and research online for two years or more and could never figure out how to shut off the fuel pump after three seconds but now I got it thanks to you I didn’t know the PCM send out a negative ground that shuts on and off To switch the relay
Excellent, great information expertly presented. The thorough way you explained coupled with the visual depictions was great. I have an F250 but the connectors are the same, just in different positions. Thank you so much for taking such care to share your knowledge.
@@CarShopTalkneed your help please. I have an 04 expedition Eddie bower. Followed this video to the T. But I'm not sure if something is different wiring wise or what. I get nothing from fuel pump now even when I straight wire power to 87 fuel pump wire. And nothing when I jump 30 constant power to 87 fuel pump wiring. Please help if you can. I'm down pretty bad only mode of transportation at this point I'm lost. Thanks in advance.
This I must do, even if the relay shows no problems. Just to know that I have the option to replacing relay or bypassing to make it home. This upgrade is awesome. THANK YOU!
Hey man just wanted to say thank you i spent all day trying to figure out a way to wire the relay up but was not having luck. Then i found your video and Bam!!! It's working again. Can't wait to check out the other videos for the other relays you have wired in. Thanks again 🙏
I did this repair last night on a 2003 Expedition with 210K miles on it. Running great now, no more codes and no more staling, thanks. A few suggestions: 1. provide an overview still picture with the clusters of plugs circled - I use the free photo editor Irfanview - PC only, not mac. Would be helpful to disconnect and label the plug / wires as #Step 1 - primary aka Trigger wires and Step #2 Secondary POS to feed fuel pump.
Thank you so much for this video! VERY helpful. I was actually planning on pulling the CJB and soldering in a new relay, but this is MUCH better! Now it's far easier to test this circuit if there are any fuel delivery issues in the future, and the fuel relay can be very easily change in the future ! (like it should have been from the factory). Great stuff man! I'm curious about your other wiring mods that showed briefly in the video.
@@CarShopTalk well, I used T connects to insure I could rebuild it if o screwed up. Tapped into power for 30 & 85 as the fuse box had a cover I could not see how to remove. Also placed a 3amp fuse on 85 for insurance. Probably overkill. Eureka, it worked. I’ll drive it a bunch around town to make sure the actual pump is not the culprit. 275k miles later and she is still going. Now, what to do about that A/C system😂😂. Thanks again.
Thats a awesome video sir , my wife has the same vehicle but different color , i own a chevy silverado that would not start , come to find out it was the relay , very easy to replace and disconnect bad relay with new one on the chevy , in the engine bay , kinda sad that Ford intigraded their relays and soldered them on the mother board , kinda stupid if you ask me , but i like your method , incase it does go out again , all you have to do is swap it out just like a chevy ! Lol , great job
I just did this to mine, now it works perfectly, I'm going to keep running it like that, I suspect the fuel pump might be on it's last leg anyway, but now I know it will not be the relay.
Glad it helped! If you’re concerned about the fuel pump, don’t forget to change the fuel filter once in a while. A lot of fuel pump failures are caused by plugged filters.
One question: what am I seeing between the heatshrink tube and the wire when you cap the little ends sticking out of the harness(es)? Is it a glue or grease? Thanks!
That type of heat shrink has a glue on the inside that turns to liquid with heat. It sets back up as it cools. Helps to seal wiring repairs water tight. I’m sure it’s available from other places, but that came from Ford. They used to sell it in bulk packs, but I think that’s been discontinued. Now I think it’s only available from them in overpriced wiring repair kits like Motorcraft WT-56814.
Help!!! My wires on my 05 expedition aren't the same as you describe. I'm attaching a pic of my connector, the on with the blue wire and orange stripe that I cut. The wire next to it should be green with yellow but it isnt. Can you help me?
You could just splice into them. My concern with that would be the fuel pump relays usually still work intermittently, so you have the potential for both relays and fuses powering the circuit. If there was a short, the circuit could be over loaded resulting in a potential fire
@@nightrainnightrain5700 If it can’t read the fuel level it won’t be able to calculate miles till empty. I don’t know of any reason it would cause a fuel gauge issue. Was anyone messing with the wiring at the tank or?

What is the best way to wire multiple wires together like on pin 87
What size motor is your expedition? Thanks in advance
This was really great. Mines a 2000 so trying to figure out what all the difference is going to be.
2000 Expedition? The fuel pump relay is in the battery junction box / engine compartment fuse box on that and I think it’s a changeable relay.

What are all the parts used in this video
They’re just generic 12 volt relays. You can find them all over the place online.
I’m confused about one part. The first wire (red one) that powers the Mass Airflow. Did you tee into that connection?
Yes, it just splices into or T”s into it.
