- Harry's Garage is Alex Dyke's favourite UA-cam channel and he's thrilled to be chatting to the man himself, motoring expert Harry Metcalfe.
You'll hear stories of driving to Monaco in a Jaguar XJS V12, recreating James Bond's The Spy Who Loved Me in a Lotus Esprit and driving to the Arctic circle in 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
Harry talks about how his background in publishing informs the way he reviews new cars and he explains how his UA-cam channel has become a huge success.

I gave up on Top Gear years ago, never watched the Grand Tour. They are not about cars anymore. I have watched every Harry video, now hooked on Iain Tyrrell's UA-cam channel as well. Both have a no nonsense focus on the car with their encyclopaedic knowledge and boyish enthusiasm.

....absolutely agree on all points. Also like Jonny on Late Brake Show (you can feel his passion for his subject) and of course Chris Harris.

Harry Garage is the best but what you didn’t bring up in this interview is how Harry helped bring Ian Tyrrell Classic Workshop to the UA-cam channel, he has a huge following and he owes it all to Harry 😊
Owes it all sounds wrong to me. That Tyrrell channel would have grown without Harry. But yes he helped a bit there. Two of my favourite channels on youtube. Itchy boots is another nice one.
@@drumtum I may be wrong but I don't think Ian Tyrrel would've done his show without being inspired by Harry? Remember, Harry brought his channel with him to Tyrrel's shop for that Espada job, I think it grew out of there?

Harry's Garage is definitely the best auto journalist out there in video. He's passionate and inspiring but he also has an air of genuine varmth and love around him, he creates a feeling like you not only know the guy in private but he's your best pal and he'll love to buy you a beer and talk about cars. Clarkson and the old Top Gear crowd simply lacks that warmth and compassion, their schtick of bullying and pissing contests and toxic masculinity is quite tiresome, so much in fact I'm done with that lot. Give me people like Harry or Chris Harris or Davide Cironi every day of the week. I think that's one of the main reason Harry's Garage works so well, because he's so inclusive. It feels like sharing and you're in on the joke he's sharing, not the one being laughed about like it is with Clarkson.
I completely agree about everything you say about Harry.
Harry should do a trip to northern Sweden in a classic Saab 900/99 Turbo
That would be good or in a classic Volvo P1800.

I think I discovered Harry when he drove his Pagani Zonda & the Mille Miglia in his Ferrari 550 Barchetta. Constantly ignoring that he was the crazy guy who drove to Sahara with his Testarossa, which didn’t bother me in my UA-cam suggestions. Until I watched it

It was watching Harry’s videos that persuaded me that there was no reason that I couldn’t drive to the south of France or the Italian Alps .It seemed a bit daunting at first but I e enjoyed every drive and seen places I would never have seen 👍🏻

Love Harry's approach to testing cars - insisting on having it for a week. I reviewed my own car for a video and it took me ages to film because it is hard to know what to say. However, I took it to another reviewer who got in, within 5 minutes of driving started recording and probably drove for another 15minutes whilst he filmed his talk before we stopped and I drove for his B-roll. The result was that whilst his was edited much better, it lacked any substance atall beyond a few facts I had mentioned (as he didn't really ask me anything about the car either). I know it's a tough gig to do YT full time, but I think Harry shows that in the long run quality trumps quantity and far better to put out one video a week, or even less often, which has been done properly.

I am also an enthusiast for Harry's car reviews. Did the UA-camr who drove your car call it a review? Does he/she earn their living from UA-cam? - it may be quite difficult to do so while being as thorough as Harry.

Talking of Bond's Lotus, the "Burglar protected" signage was first spotted in "For your eyes only" when the camera crew were filming in Cyprus and that famous car chase in "The Spy Who Loved Me" have taken place in Sardinia when the Esprit nose-dived into the sea and transformed into a submarine.
James Bond Esprit changing colour was For Your Eyes Only (not Spy Who Loved Me ... swimming Esprit) but otherwise perfect podcast!

Yep! We Brits HATE in video ads. Totally spoils watching it, and yes it is because of growing up watching the BBC. I don't mind ads before and after the video, but not inside. I feel I am being used then. UA-cam (to start with anyway) was not set up for the professional program maker to make money, but the everyday person sharing their video. Before and after maybe annoying, but UA-cam has to make money to host the videos. And I have no problem video makers having some of that, but in video ads, a BIG turn off.
