  • On this episode of the podcast I speak with Yanis Varoufakis about the role of banks and politicians. Yanis is an economist, politician, author and Secretary-General of MeRA25. He is perhaps best known for his role as the Greek Minister of Finance during the Greek credit crisis. In our discussion we cover some fairly big questions: Who really foots the bill when banks are bailed out? Who are the winners and losers during inflation? Are those that control the means of production still the dominant class? Why isn't the EU home to big tech giants like facebook and amazon? What powers do politicians really have? What might a non-exploitative and sustainable social economy look like in practice and is there a peaceful way to get there?

Yanis Varoufakis is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom. It's wonderful how he frames everything in terms of incentives and human psychology. It makes his thinking very clear and consistent.
I'm tired of most modern economists who pretend that incentives and human psychology don't matter and who talk about everything in terms of cherry-picked models, manipulated formulas and statistics.
Too many economists today are all smoke and mirrors; they never even try to explain why things are the way they are.

@@martinpetersen3187 Does one detect an air of ridiculous superiority in your old-fashioned tone with your dismissive assumption that other listeners, who you know nothing of, have no critical quality or knowledge of what is being discussed apart from you? In any case, are we always to spoil the pleasures of listening to sages with suspicions, negativity and with judgmental hearts? Yanis Varoufakis, a recognised Greek sage, could comfortably sit and muse with his renowned forebears Aristotle and Plato. And, what about you? Perhaps, your negatively judgemental answer to Yanis will be presented in a podcast of your own very soon from which we might equally sigh and swoon over for its poetic delivery of ideas and truths ~ aye?

@@JoseighBlogs He might be recognised by some as a Greek "sage". But believe me there are others who have a far more critical view of him, his arguments and his policy as a former Minister of Finance. But I have to admit that as a Minister of Finance he succeeded in one effort most others would have failed: he united 18 Eurozone Finance minister against the then Greek government and alienated in no time politicians who sympathised at the beginning with the government he was a part of.

What a brilliant teacher Yanis V is. The idea of the production-distribution-financialisation process being overturned with the end of feudalism in the 18th c so that it became financialisation-distribution-production. I've seen a couple dozen of his talks, and he is always enthused about describing economical processes in a way that we students can grasp. A paradigmatic, generous imparter of that knowledge and understanding which is vital to a dignified, worthwhile life. One of my favorite humans. Many thanks.

There has been no actual redistribution of power .. only license to government officials to act as agents with a proviso that if they don't follow their masters' orders they are out of a portfolio. Of course as you stated the privileged wealthy often do take on political roles.

YV is great - what he didn’t explain was how “money printing” by definition devalues a currency and creates inflation.
Conservatives emphasize that government handouts create inflation (furlough in the UK and Trump’s cheques), it does, but the money printing for the banks far exceeds any such handouts and is the key driver of inflation of assets.

    • @filmjazz

The last step in the lifecycle of money is taxation. Money printing must be offset by "burning" the money at the end of its journey from the Fed, the central banks, commercial banks, smaller banks, employer, wage earners, consumer goods producers, service providers, etc. If the money is not intelligently taxed back out of the system you will see inflation everywhere there is "too much money chasing too few goods."
New housing and rent prices are high because hedge funds and wealthy individuals literally have too much money to spend on cash purchases, and workers are left with record debt, 30 year high interest rates, and historically depressed wages.
Fiat currency has led to massive corruption where, as you said, the gains are privatized, the losses are socialized, and the tax system is rigged against the majority for the benefit of the few. It's unsustainable.

I have been watching our financial whizz for quite some time and this presentation was the finest appraisal of the present day corrupt world financial system. This what the world needs, people with absolute humanity to take us out of this mess we are in and trust you will continue in this vane to educate people to understand what their rights are and what we as citizens, to rightfully demand as to how our governments are managed. I am no way implying that is what you are doing but rather educating us to make our own decisions. I believe that as humanity and the intelligent ones on this biosphere, we cannot just capitulate and experience our dinosaur extinction moment or do we stand up to USELESS leaders and ask them to either start the war kill yourselves and we will repair this planet and return it to is former ancient glory where we all live in peace and harmony or GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY SO THAT WE CAN START THE REPAIRS NOW.
PS. Thank you this energetic presentation and with absolute hope that we will find a mechanism whereby we can come together and give leadership to people to execute change in their countries and for everyone who live in it. WE MUST. What I experience in social media networks, there is more knowledge system within this group than the capacity of ALL governments put together Except 2

I would expand on the "Debt is a claim on future wealth " point by exploring what underpins all human wealth which is I suggest extraction of resources from the earth. Ultimately debt is a claim on future extraction. On a planet with finite resources, infinite debts can not be repaid by the earth system. When the earth system fails there will be no rolling it over. Any economic system which does not recognize its dependency on the eco-system that provides all the outputs and absorbs all it's waste is doomed to fail. Failure to live sustainably on your home planet is I suspect the true Great Filter.

cow on grass field creates a non zero sum game
you fertilise soil, you produce better milk and meat with time, then you can use fertile soil for farming if you must producing high quality feed for animals
the same as river that brings minerals with water and dirt
actual model is to eat up all grass not letting it regenerate and push roots deeper, modify cow genetically to feed it equally modified unnatural feed producing with a few minerals on completely sterile land, and push chemical crap from factories to the river murdering fishes and sending toxic crap to fields
human stated this madness with modification of plants that are inherently uneatable for humans
this revolution competed with next one of inventing herding
until today you can classify all human myths into three groups - original African stories including the lion man people from deep or born in a tree plus bad snake, next stories about flood and serpents, gods of water, and lastly myths of Eurasian steppe herders where cow in the main topic or stag eagle sometimes, each compounded on the earlier ones.
herders were winning when graineaters got sick and got decimated by plagues because of deficient diet
but we're losing when overcrowded cities organised and sent big dense armies often on ships
it's always city vs desert, shore vs interior, meat vs grain and both affected by climatic cycles

    Loved this!!!❤
There is a new paradox I wish Yanis could discuss. Renewable energy solutions with seaweed batteries and new nano materials graphene can reinstall indigenous culture. Village prosperity
Solar, sea water hydrogen. 20000 people colonize coastal desert territory with just $10000 could kick start this new economy. How humanity needs to move for climate emergency this great new frontier. Lithium from the seawater, sulfur from composted fish waste, carrageenan from seaweed makes lithium sulfur battery. A new micro grid circular economy. One village at a time bridges humanity

      Spot on.
52,00-55,20 , He DIDNT SAID A WORD for the 7th and 4th generation bankers, rothchilds, rockfelers, (correspondingly), ... and others,
and that reveals him as a stooge of them, that was groomed by them,
to replace the current puppets, supposed - leaders of the nations of europe, with the new breed of
      lapdog like governors.........
He just talked about vague financial technical creachers that obliged their owners to work and work and beeing ....unhappy !!
That kind of BS he is talked about .......

Yanis is a briliant man, but unwilling to draw real conclusions. Of course governments should take control of the banks, of course they should stop creating debt and start writing it off, of course capital should be redistributed toward the masses - but none of these things will be done. Therefore the question I would like to hear someone answer is what can we do to avoid anarchy, war, civil war, revolution and bodies hanging from lamp posts? Because that seems to be the default trajectory.

It's concerning to see a growing sense of unease, of disenfranchisement, particularly amongst younger people developing across the world,
mostly in 'the West. There are obvious indicators but perhaps the core issue exists at an existential level. Perhaps Yanis recognises this.

Yanis is a great academic and as a great academic has the talent of being able to rationalize complex topics with clear communication. Great interview!
The biggest drama of all this is that currently socialism exists for the elites, which are constantly bailed out by the governments, the rest of the society lives under market rules and austerity. This will sink the so-called west if not addressed now, we are nearing the point of no return.
