    A friend pointed this out to me. Couldn’t sleep last night. 4am, started watching this. What a terrific history. I remember watching regularly as soon as it was regularly televised. The most entertaining motorsport I’ve ever seen. The racing was always close, the characters very varied but always fascinating, often the races were packed with incidents, the format made it unmissably good. I have fallen out of love with TV these last many years & a few years ago, we threw out our final TV. So coming across things like this reminds me that TV wasn’t always a mind-suck (just mostly, it was & if anything it’s worse now).
    Cleland & Plato have long been my favourite characters. Never a dull moment.

    They came to Sonoma California (where I happen to have a fabrication shop) I did some work for a few of the teams, the last year they were here I got a wheel and tire from one of the Chevy teams that I still have to this day as a cherished souvenir!

    I’m also surprised no mention of Paul Radisich, in a Mondeo , where in 1995 only competing in half a season came 3rd. The only mention was that he gave his car up to Mansel to drive after Mansel had a few smashes learning to drive it.

      Race 1 : First day back antics
      Race 2 : Andy Neate strikes again
      Race 3 : Wet tyres on dry track, dry tyres on wet track

    Ah Vic Lee started life off as a salesman for Whitehouse VW at Bexley,Kent.He took me for a test drive in an Audi UR Quattro down the A2 and we went round the roundabout at the Bexley turnoff at a speed that I would not have believed if I had not been in the car at the time (greater than the National speed limit...!!).He later took the lease on a unit on the Springhead Enterprise park next to where I was with the Andrews Sykes company and now and then he used the estate for " unofficial " testing.RS 200 amongst others.He was using Oxygen gas bottles with removeable bottom sections for the transportation of Columbias main export.. what a waste of talent.He was pretty handy behind the wheel of a Golf as well.

      Cracking tales. I believe you on the A2/Bexley move. I know that stretch as I was Bromley based for many years. Real drivers can do things ordinary mortals won’t even attempt.
      I knew he got busted. What an idiot. Did he do jail time? Did that wreck his business affairs? So often, I see people snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in their lives. It’s not even always greed, as often, it’s recklessness inherent in them.

    I don't know Soper or Cleland, but watching this sure looks like Soper had one thing on his mind, and that was to take out Cleland. It's the sort of thing that could make fans turn their back on the series. When points are close and a teammate does this sort of thing the teammate or teammates should suffer the same. So if Soper ends up finishing last his teammates should set one place ahead, the person that gets taken out should keep his position. Then that sort of bs would suddenly stop.

    49:00 - even if its true, and I'm sure in some cases (like Harvey Obv) it was true, it's crazy to admit that in private. To put it on a nationally broadcast show is moronic. Even worse is the example it sets to kids. I hate drink driving.
    Also on the subject of Harvey. He talks of the wreck between Cleland and Soper as what both defined and tarnished his championship. That's weird, I would've thought you're boss getting nailed for importing class a's and them trying to shut the team down before the end of the season as being more tarnishing ;)
    Thanks for the upload.

    • @gtr2racingsim656
      @gtr2racingsim656  3 роки тому +2

      "I would've thought you're boss getting nailed for importing class a's and them trying to shut the team down" This is true. Same happened to Paul Newman who bought out Sisley racing, he got banged up for smuggling drugs. (not sure it was class a's though).
      The drinking thing... different age. Back in the day Hawthorn, Moss, Hunt, all used to have pint before they jumped in the car.
      But i know what you mean, times have changed, probably best for Harvey to keep that quiet. Next thing ITV 'cancel' him and Toby Moody does the commentary again.

    • @rolux4853
      @rolux4853 11 місяців тому +1

      That’s how it was back then, times were much better.
      Also they raced on a closed course, there are no cops around.
      If I set up a race on my private property, all the drivers can be completely hammered, it doesn’t matter.
      As long as nobody leaves my property we can have as much alcohol as we want and then drive around.
      You also still can have a beer before driving, it won’t bring you over the legal limit.
      I grew up on motocross tracks, they all are on private property.
      After races and events it was completely normal to get drunk and have jump and trick contests in the middle of the the night.

    • @82coxy
      @82coxy 4 місяці тому

      @@rolux4853Also I've rode motocross since the early 90's and have never seen riders get drunk after a event to get on their bikes to do any kind of competition. The organisers would ban before you have time to even think about doing it again.
      Maybe it's different here in the UK.

    Losing the mandatory pit stops ruined Touring cars for me... It took strategy out of it and now if you qualify well youre probably going to get a podium in both the first 2 races and the whole reverse grid system is a joke. It didnt help when it became a hot hatch championship either...

    It did end up to be too much like dodgem cars sadly, if a driver could not get past they just bumped into it to knock it off. Got a bit boring then tbh You can have close exciting racing without that sort of behavior
