John Deere 8R 370 fuel tank replacement

  • In this video, I work on replacing a fuel tank that got a hole rubbed into it because one of the wheel wedges came loose and the tire went inward causing it to rub a hole into the tank! This is usually caused from human error and not getting them tight enough, properly torqued, or the wedges didn't get re-torqued after some hours were put on the tractor. I've never had a wheel come loose when it is properly torqued and re-torqued after driving it. But, it is what it is and needs to be fixed. A lot more stuff has to come off than I thought to get the fuel tank out. Enjoy the ride as I tackle this large project!

@jameschristie4596 what's the alternative? Pull a fuel barrel behind your implement? I think some of the 40 series use to have steel tanks right in front of the radiator and behind the rock box/weights but they weren't 192gallons either.

I bet Deere wished they had put a metal shield around the tank beside the rotating tires. What an expense just because a wedge got a little loose. What happens when your tire grabs a rock in the field.

The issue is more due to that size tractor having the wheels adjusted to 60” spacing to suit 30” plant rows. Obviously that is the absolute minimum spacing and as planters and consequently tractors have got a lot bigger a lot of growers have changed to a wider row spacing (i.e. 36” or 1m etc) just because of this problem.
When 60” spacing was adopted equipment was much smaller, like 4 & 6 row equipment, so tractors where much smaller.
I hope this gives you some background to why this has happened.

Zeth with your knowledge and skills you made it so easy. In your technical field you definitely have a lot of responsibility as a technician but your awesome. Thanks for a absolutely great video and a huge huge project being filmed.
It was interesting and enjoyable for sure.
    Wow and more wow’s.
What a huge project this was to replace the gas.
Before I go farther and don’t laugh at me, I am surprised that John Deere does not have a replacement program for a major project like this instead of the local shop doing this. The local shop has a lot of time in this. Just saying.
ZK and the new person, Zach I believe you said, my respect to you for tackling this project. You basically disassembled this tractor. Most interesting watching this. Thanks to the John Deere engineers for figuring this out, little humor there.
I appreciate the attitude you had Thur this and just getting the job done.
Believe I would have walked the other direction.
So interesting what it takes to do some of these new technology tractor jobs. Amazing.
Thanks for filming this ZK. Am totally in aw of you and Zach for doing this job.
My compliments to you ZK. My respect to you.

You do good work // as a customer I always cringed at tear downs of factory assembly like this but after owning a dealership for 12 years and having a great mechanic I now believe that the re-assembly by a great tech is better than factory and a lot of fine tuning gets done which makes the re-assembly like this at least as good as the assembly line and most likely much better

Bad design horrible,😢 at least put a steel plate 1/8" to protect that plastic tank speccially if you need to remove the tractor from it the wheels carry up wood, stones branches ... man what the engineers where thinking, they might design tractors but never operate them in real fields...Can't imagine how much did it cost just in labor. What is super is to see you taking that machine apart.

I am neither an Engineer or Farmer, but considering how much mud can build up on tires and with rock or debris possibly imbedded would have thought a company if committed to quality and durability would have left large space between tires and frame, fenders, hoses or any other part then further protecting those items closest with sturdy steel shields. And if your going to use plastic parts anywhere, figure they are going to need replacement sooner than later and place them for reasonable access.

It had to be a mad scientist just to make the injection mold to create that plastic tank. How can anybody afford to pay for the labor of this very complex repair. I have worked on a lot of difficult heavy equipment, but this takes the cake. You guys will always have a job, if JD can continue selling equipment that takes so much time to repair. No wonder JD don't want farmers making their own repairs. The cost of labor for these new machines is bound bring in millions. If the farmer charged JD for loss of production I bet thay would make machines on the KISS principle. In the manufacturing enviroment if a contractor stalls production they have to pay dearly.

An automotive engineer once told me that car fuel tanks are quite literally designed by having the CAD software "select empty space" and putting a form around it as a first step. Of course that gets touched up a little bit and made cheaper to produce, but that's how they end up in the shapes they are. I can well imagine John Deere doing the same with this fuel tank, plus tidying up the lines and harnesses on top a little bit to go in more cleanly.

Thanks! What store are you applying at? Best advice: Do whatever job they tell you to do and do it well. Don’t let anybody out work you. Lead by example. Listen to the old guys. They have forgotten more than you’ll ever know. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you work with someone that is unpleasant, don’t let it get to you. There’s always going to be that person you don’t get along with no matter where you go. It’s how you handle tough situations that defines you as a technician and a person. If you borrow a tool more than once, you better buy it. This is a job to be passionate about. Taking care of customers equipment like it’s your own. If your just wanting a job and a paycheck this isn’t the job for you. Make a name for yourself that the farming community will talk about at the coffee shops, in a good way. When you put on that uniform, you represent all of us, remember that. Sometimes we have to fix our co-workers mistakes, but that’s Sloan’s mistake and we must all take responsibility as a team and make it right. You can hash it out when you get back to the shop, but don’t throw anybody on your team under the bus in front of a customer. It only makes your team look bad. I hope that helps and look forward to seeing you someday. Good luck!

I wonder the price of repairs? Probably over 10 thousand... im assuming of course. A stainless steel plate and jb weld or nut rivet would have beeen way cheaper. Obviously i dont know owns it and whatever but oh man that looks expensive.

So if you ever have to do transmission work on an 8R, will you have to remove all this?

No, you roll the engine away, then pull the transmission out. Very thankful for this design

Wtf design. I don't think whoever designed this piece of shit could have made it more complicated and harder to maintain, which of course is paid for by the farmer.
May we know how much you charged for this job, if it is not a trade secret?

Greetings from West Texas, No doubt the guys shadowing you are benefiting greatly, on a side note I’ve seen where the gear on the upper inner sleeve won’t engage the splines on the axle due to the welds on the tabs on the sides of the gear breaking, hope nothing but the best for you and your channel 👍

John Deere engineers - How can we absolutely screw our mechanics and owners over
Let's put a plastic, 190 gallon fuel tank, 2 inches away from a large drive wheel with absolutely no protection. And let's go ahead and make it so you have to strip absolutely everything from the rear of the engine back just to replace it 😂😂😅😅🤣🤣
