- Got a service call on a John Deere 9460R that the customer says when he puts it into gear it will not move and it will kill the engine. In this video, I will perform diagnostics on this tractor and repair it to get it moving again. This one is quite interesting and had me puzzled.

Number One ! Know your System !! Eliminate possible variables ! Test ! Replace selected item ... re Test ... then field test ... great diagnosis ZK ...
Hi Zeth! …. Really enjoying your videos ! And I really hope the top brass at Sloan AND Deere know how well you a represent the companies with your skill and attitude 👏🏻👍🏻 big the green iron moving big man 🦾
learning is what keeps life interesting , that's why I like your videos
You are a great mechanic and I love watching you and I learn alot
That is one thing about working as an ag tech always learning something new everyday.
That was a puzzle, but you handled it!
Had a 988k cat loader. Park brake was a dry cavity except for the pistons. Pistons partially seized, so pressure was good but they weren’t actually released. Naturally operator roasted it.
Don’t have to worry about codes on that 30 series next to it!
Great video. A learning experience for all. As you said , that valve looked fine, but visual inspection does NOT mean much.
Not a tech, but I am in ag, My first thought was a bad sensor or electronic problem. These new tractors and trucks are nothing but a pain in the ass.
Thanks for the videos.
By the way if it's not red leave it in the shed!😊
I did a 450 hour machine that the rivet that plugs the oil passage in the shaft came free
It was in the piston and creating millings that were getting stuck in clutch a solenoid
It was an awesome place to work lol
G'day Zeth. Another excellent video as usual. You're a gun! Keep them coming mate!!! Cheers from near Geelong, Victoria, Australia 🙂
I do wonder why everything needs such a level of technology.
Deere uses similar valves to that on their combines hydrolic block. I had a flake of steel get stuck in one on mine when a hydro pump went out. Those things are EXPENSIVE!!!
You are awesome buds. Hats off, hats off.
Zeth i had my fingers..arm's..and leg's crossed for you before the test!! CK UK
Thank you for sharing
Good job, did the Farmer have any clue to the disapearing Trans Oil ?
Hydraulic...
Leaky couplers, hoses, cylinders add up over time.
When this thing goes to the scrap yard, the old 806 will still be running!
Filming these videos obviously adds time to service calls. Are the customers charged for this extra time? Just something I’ve been curious about. Other than that I love the videos and love to learn
Does Deere not realize what a POS the 9R is? I am a die hard Deere customer. I own all Deere row crop tractors and they are hands down better than the competition. Last year however, after several major breakdowns on my 9s, I bought a 580 steiger. Everything about that tractor is better than my green ones. Why they felt the need to over complicate those tractors so much is beyond me.
Hi. New subscriber. I have watched
Some of your videos in the past and
Have totally enjoyed them. I don't
Know if you have heard but Colorado has passed right to repair bill including tractors and combines.
Great video!
I've always wanted one of those to mow my 3/4 acre. Always fun to upstage the neighbors. Why keep up with the Joneses when you can run over them with a large farm implement?
the problems began when the put computers on tractors
Maybe I missed, did you figure out where the Oil went ??
Where had you been I have miss your video
I posted last week…
@@ZKMasterTech I like the way that you show how to do thing
How could that oil level get so low....and what is the owner thinking letting it get there?
Hey Zeth, this is off topic of this video but I was wondering if you know when the 18 liter engine that is in the JD 9600 forage harvester will be available in 4wheel drives and possibly combines?
As far as i know only the 13.6L will be used.
I have a 7320 with a ivt, it go stuck in park because of parking solenoid defective, I replaced both but now says parking brake won’t release put in come home but kills engine when do that. Driving me crazy… Any ideas?
Wires. Computers. On a tractor. Bah. My JD has spark plug wires and that is it. And it has worked for 85 years.
(My current job equipment makes that tractor seem simple. 1 vehicle has over 18 separate computers. All tied together over CAN, LON and Ethernet. And runs on systems from 28VDC to 900VDC & 3 phase AC on variable voltage and frequency.)
Maybe what started all of this mess was the hydraulic fluid went empty. Thusly hung up the valve.?
Kind of scary how finicky those electronically controlled transmissions can be.. I guess it's what we call progress. Bet that 4430 sitting beside never had that problem... :) Good work finding that. Shows how important knowing how things really work makes a good basis for diagnosis.
I found out we have a really good Tech working at our local JD shop, he fixed a really strange problem I was having with one of our tractors a few years ago. Now he's working locally, I have him working on my old 9400T changing out the head gasket. So nice having someone that can reliability do this sort of work without having to do it myself. Big + for our dealer hiring good experienced technicians, as I am sure your employer is very lucky to have you on board too!
Quick question... are you looking to work for JD or a college somewhere, training new people for your field of expertise in the future? Just curious; seems there are fewer good techs around these days, we need more!
Maybe I’ll teach someday but not for a while.
Great troubleshooting, sir!
Zeth, great video!
how come you didn’t test that cartridge before you ordered a new one thats what i would do before spending any customers money
Some tractors could use an exorcism as well as mechanical repair. You need to keep a priest on your staff. Stay safe and God bless.
sounds like you need BFH
It's like a stubborn donkey. You've met the😂proverbial stubborn donkey.
Disappointed that you didn't hook a laptop up to look at live data which might well have told you a lot more about internal pressures and solenoid operations.
Fancy tyrning up on a field service call without diagnostic equipment?
@markdauncey927 there is no live data on the ptp controller that would have shown internal pressures or solenoid data that would have helped in my diagnosis. Maybe next time I will just waste time by connecting my lap just to show you there’s nothing there to see.
Engineers/builders need to work on equipment before building it,
I’m a warranty manager for a car manufacturer and I appreciate how you always talk about learning, simple best practices and following directions. Something we work hard at every day with all our tech’s.
Some days I miss turning wrenches and then my back and my knees remind me that I don't. Your videos bring me back to what I loved about some of my previous jobs; the troubleshooting, methodical dissection and reassembly during the repair and the satisfaction of bringing something back to life.
You're doing a great job and I thank you for that!
Well done, Zeth, you show your mastery of tractor systems. Does your office have access to some manner of tech forum where you can input the problem and see if anyone else has had to contend with the same? Stay safe out there.
Thanks for another great video.
It was interesting and enjoyable.
Well, that was a learning experience for sure. Glad you knew were to look or what to test and all that.
I was totally in the dark on this one. Had no idea of where to look or even ask for help. Oh boy.
I still am somewhat confused on this clutch issue but followed you on some of the tests and your descriptions of what was wrong and parts needed and all that.
My compliments to you ZK. You knew what to follow to check things out and what to look at. Techs like yourself need a pat on the back for figuring it out. I had no idea. Just following you-ha!!!
If I said I totally understand what you did to fix the trans , then I am not being truthful. Follow you on the basics but about it.
With the technology now days, techs like yourself have so much on your plate to figure some of these issues out. Wow. Nice job ZK figuring this one out.
Huge learning experience here. Thanks for everything ZK.
I am still scratching my head-ha!!!!!
The Iowa Farm Boy.
Zeth, Enjoy your videos, and your trouble shooting techniques. Love your knowledge and experience awesome mechanic. Definitely look you up at the next one. Stay safe!!
#1, anyone who puts around $500k in a machine should know to check fluid levels at least weekly. #2, JD diagnostics seem to be very vague in actually diagnosing the problem. #3, the engineers who design equipment don't operate nor maintain what they design, let alone do service on their product. If they did have to turn the wrenches, I bet they would do a better job. Manufacturer shouldn't hire anyone who isn't willing to work on what they design. You Service Tech's have your work cut out for you. Great video!
500k is a drop in the bucket
Question, why does it throw a code for 'clutch circuit' even when the coil is fine, but the valve was the issue?
Do you need to use the laptop? God gave you for a lot of the stuff the computer just gives you an area of where to start looking and wouldn’t you just love to slap the snot out of the engineers that designed the tractor they could not giving you .100 inches more so you can actually get Tools in there to take stuff apart
I don’t know how old you are but you’re filled with knowledge and I know your company is happy to have you on staff!! Keep up good work!!
Thank you! Will do!
Hey Big dogg I can’t get my lady outta 4wd I need her in quad range abcd 1234 2wd
Another great vid! Very informative and educational! Keep the deere running!
You are 100% correct Zeth, that as a tech I found that everyday was a learning day, but also outside of work, I also treated my whole life the same way that you never stop learning about life! Amazing how many people don't think that way. Thanks for a great video.
When you asked the question at the beginning I thought maybe a clutch but had no clue about the solenoid :)
I'm still wondering where all the hydraulic oil went though!
You and me both!
In discovering the " LETTER " C " and " R " mixing you up , and there being Letters C & R on the side PORT location , would you be sending a note to John Deer engineer department to address to location or even the font size as this could mess with local repair folks.
Great video Zeth! Was enjoyable to watch you process that issue and find the cause!
These scattered brained jobs keeps the mind sharp! 12th gear anxiety also keeps you on your toes. 😁👍
Case Quad doesn’t have these problems just saying…
Nice job on that one. The owner needs to check his oil more often. Hate to see a neglected piece of machinery.
On our 7810, the speed sensor went off. Which made parking jump in when driving. You were glued to the windshield.😂 The error came and went, but after some troubleshooting we found the cause. Spent half a day in the workshop then out and driving again.😜👌
Challenge that's the one that I like🎉🎉🎉
I’m impressed how you figured it out. That’s a master tech. Love the channel
Seth I have been with Deere for 23 years I am as you a master tech and also a field tech, I have seen this two times on 9560RT’s , it is an internal transmission problem. The two I had had were both tractors at around 250 hours, we had to get them into the shop, at that point DTAC had me installing DR’s in all of the transmission ports running tests, tests and more tests. Turned out because these tractors were so new with so little hours they had use remove the transmissions, they sent us new transmissions, and wanted the failed ones shipped back immediately. Now here’s the thing Deere never told us what had failed in the two transmissions..
Ya know zeth its jobs like this that makes you a superior tech you didnt give up and i could see your wheels turning the whole time you was in the cab going through how this is supposed to work and talking your way tbrough it either way love the channel awesome job sir😮
"Take that 9460R" I could sense your frustration in dealing with the machine, but you kept your cool on camera, persevered, and got the machine back to operating status. Great Tech skills, I salute you Sir. 😃
Everything worked out for you, replacing the valve and calibrating the box.
I like your story about the 12th gear . I thought you were going to say it stopped at 20 mph 😂 but I know 7 mph is fast for a machine. Your a master tech I enjoy watching and learning . I’m an outboard motor mechanic . I love farm machinery. Thanks for your videos 👍
Your very good at your job 👍👍
I been watching this channel for a long time and I am now a full self employed John Deere service master technician lol
Now that could have been an expensive fix
Nice one zeth always something new to learn 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Some faults need a bit more thinking time 👍👍👍
I often feel that electrical troubleshooting is like chasing smoke. Intermittent problems particularly.
Was told along time ago. If you ain’t testing your guessing.
I had a new holland t9 last year that had a faulty gear shift solenoid, would stall it out out in a few gears because it was trying to engage multiple gears at once. It did this to the point it burnt out the clutch
Pack. We rebuilt the trans and it still had issues, it was only then that we found the faulty solenoid. A $200 solenoid was enough to cause a week long transmission rebuild.
Hi zk mastertech I've been watching you videos for a while love what your doing. I'm an apprentice for farm machinery ive just started my apprenticeship its hard to buy tools you need. Can you please do a video of what tools apprentices should buy
Already did
Ohh ok sorry didn't have a look 😂😂
You where trapped in a mouse trap their Sir! No place drive forward & No reverse woorkinĝ ,not realy Happy days for a field mechanic, or? From Peter Eriksson CEO Falun Maskin Service Sweden Europe 😊😅😢!
You need a macnaught transfer pump for 5gal pails. Milwaukee is good for some
Stuff but the macnaught rocks for filling plus they have a meter all cordless
Sometime you understand nothing eben good sensors & diagnostic programmes & life long experince and knowledge Sir, it youst not make common sense! Or? From Peter Eriksson Sweden Europe 😅😊😢😮😮!
So the tractor broke sitting still in the shed?
Good, informative video.
Hey nice video, this is the kind of content I really like tractor serves calls.
This is a great video! Nice job explaining and showing us how it's done. Thank you
Had that same thing happen to me on an 8400t. Tran lock up in 12 gear ended up bing a fema vavle
Do you follow Vice Grip Garage? :)
Absolutely!
love the snapon light..havent seen that sort here in New Zealand
You a good tech Zeth, very impressed.
Interesting content up here, keep going like this
Best regards from Germany 🫡
BTW: Knipex…. „K+knee+p+ex“ pronounced in one breath 😂
Congrats! JD made it to Tesla and some poor farmer cannot continue to work ground, plant or harvest because of kind of stuff
Good job sod buster
Fantastic job using all your skills Zeth thanks for sharing 🦘
Everything USED to be easy to work on, now you need a damn PhD just to change an air filter or oil.
Do you know Derick from Vice Grip Garage? Your sayings are very similar LOL.
What happened to the missing oil? And, does Deere require factory personnel watch your videos to see if there are better ways to install or have to repair?
Everything has horsehair wire on it grab the wire and the plug and break it then redo the plugs and plug it back in maybe even that in a little heavier wire at that spot. God I hate electrical
Another great vid! Keep the deere's running
20 seconds into the video.. I think it's a sensor and/or limit switch of some sort. Just a guess from a heavy equipment mechanic of sorts.
Loved this one Zeth, thank you. I was thinking what could have happened while this tractor was in this shed. Everything was covering dust so it had been there a while and it drove in ok. So something happened while is was stood, otherwise you would have got the call earlier. 👍
Hi Zeth, love your work. Was that a literary reference in there, 'Three clutches good, four clutches bad'?
Valves always open and close as you shift gears if you have a sticky one it might not do the job at least you were fortunate enough to figure it out
What a fun video to watch. Has to be be pretty rewarding at the end of the day figuring something out like this. Kind of the same for me with computers. You have this...this... and this.... that could be the problem but then you get THAT random thing that totally catches you for a loop. Great job man!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You are brilliant. Amazing!
