I replaced the valve cover and spark plug gaskets on my 2001 2.4L 4 Cyl Tacoma a year ago. I used a bit of black RTV along with the gasket just to make sure I didn't get any leaks. Probably wasn't necessary but gave me peace of mind.
You're a very honest dude, I've lost them "eye protection", and You're part's washer is same kind as I have😊👍🏻. Thanks for the great commentary instructions on doing that job. You're shop is looking 👍🏻👍🏻 you're bringing back the prelude alive, and healthy. Thanks man . Will be looking for you're next part of the prelude Resurrection. 👌
Thank you for taking the time to make a well produced video. However I would like to add a caveat I don't know what car you're working on but I am looking at replacing the oil pan on my old 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 There the manual specifically states that you put the gasket on dry And other people on a Mercedes website have shown me what happens when you put silicone or RTV on their gaskets and it happens to seep through the gasket into the oil On the screen on the oil pump there's all kinds of bits of RTV sitting on the screen Maybe this is the procedure for the particular car you're working on; I certainly don't question your expertise I'm just saying that that is not standard for every car On the Mercedes like a transmission pan you torque the bolts properly and you should have no leaks on a dry gasket
It goes different ways in my opinion as a technician. Exhaust under oil pan means some more time however it’s not that much depending on the vehicle and access space. On the other hand have the exhaust right by the oil pain theoretically heats the oil up sooner
If it's a situation when the gasket gravitates towards its daddy, the earth, I will apply the correct type and amount of silly cone gasket. (Gasket uhtastic) all day long, a great approach and skill set for the best mechanical bond possible and without inevitable gasket laying fails leading to a dead seal.
Good content. I know this is not a detailing video but it would've been nice to see a thorough cleanup of all the grime around the oil pan and also on the external walls of the pan. Makes the job a bit more satisfying. Thank you
This dude has made diagnosing my car super easy, do you work on Saab/ Volvos ?? I’ve been wanting to do a timing chain /guides tensioners on my ecotec block but have no clue how to time this engine
Hey, I can tell you if you havnt done it yet.....you need special tools that hold cam in certain position and whatnot. If its an interference engine it is not worth the chance of getting timing off a tooth or so ....Some Auto Zone's and other parts stores rent and loan the special tools for the job. Good Luck. (I did my BMW 740i myself about 2 years back. The special tool kit was $100 on Amazon but chains and tensioners OEM were $800! Some BMW dealers get up to $5,000 for that job!
4:37, I don't understand why car manufacturers sometimes install oil drain plugs like that, higher from the bottom of the oil pan. It is the same on my 2006 Corolla. To get rid of most of the old oil I have to lift the front end of the car extremely high.
Very good job with the disclaimer....you never know what people might assume when trying to repair a vehicle and they end up severely damaging the damn thing! Without watching video I'd answer NO. RTV is known to emit fumes that damage/ruin/kill 02 sensors!
I always liked to use Permatex tacky red sealer brushed on one side of a gasket if it was one that might be replaced sometime in the future like a valve cover, but if it was for an oil pan or another one that would probably never be replaced then I would use it on both sides of the gasket. 🤔
Thanks for another great vid. You have saved me literally thousands of dollars at this point. lYou should add a button to allow us to buy you a beer, coffee, or sammich as thanks. 🤓
0:38 sorry RNR, I call BS: leaking oil does not cause bolts to vibrate loose, otherwise they would not use bolts inside the crankcase! Loose bolts on a Honda is usually caused by loss of clamping force due to gasket creep or embedding/ thread deformation. The gasket material looses clamping force as it ages, and out of spec bolts can deform over time.... causing loss of clamping force.
Today I will be installing the oil pan on a Mercedes 560SL that I am rebuilding. RTV or no RTV on a paper gasket has haunted me. 99% of oil pan replacement videos on UA-cam use tons of RTV. The manual doesn’t mention RTV use at all and the manufacturers of paper gaskets say to never use RTV. This is one of the most controversial topics. Why can’t mechanics agree on anything?
i used a little bit of RTV gasket when i saw the cheap rubber gasket has sharp finish and excess rubber on its edges and the rubber itself is bit brittle when i try to squeeze it..
The design and fit of the oil pan, dented to allow the exhaust to pass under, and just barely flush with the transmission shows how an engineer can model up a cool looking design in CAD, which is a mother f'er to service. Not as bad as the 1980 something BMW with the front half-shaft going THROUGH the oil pan!
Are you sure the oil isn’t dripping from the tappet cover gasket? I was fooled to replace the sump gasket and the oil was leaking from the tappet cover gasket
Yes, install same way he explained. You do thick bead all around then hand tight to squeeze out then wait hour then torque down all way. Best to get gasket though if the part calls for it
I can let you slide on the glasses due to the fact that I don’t wear them either but you don’t have a parts washer in your shop?!!!! For the cost of a couple cases of brake clean you can get a pretty decent parts washer at harbor freight! I got one and it’s worked great for years! Using break clean to clean everything gets expensive!
HAVE FUN DOING THIS SAME GASKET IN LESS THEN A YEAR YOU JUST PUT THE WORLDS MOST CRAPPY GASKET SEAL IN THE WORLD THAT RTV IS TRASH TOO SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH OEM GASKET AND HONDABOND THE BEST YOU CAN USE ON A HONDA

"...And if you're wondering, why I'm not wearing any eye protection... that's because I lost them, ...good as excuse as any" xD
He used his safety squints. I saw it.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye
Lmfaoooo
U r Awesome !
It’s ok. Safety squints work almost as good!

Good stuff brother! We just did an oil pan gasket on my son's civic! No more leaks!
Him: You're welcome next guy who has to take this apart
Him in the future: thank you
How long after you Torque the Oil pan bolts do you wait to refill the Oil and Start the Engine?
Thank you for taking the time to make a well produced video. However I would like to add a caveat

I have used a lot of blue RTV sealer. But I recently found Lube Locker gaskets. Transmission pan and rear diff. Work very nice. dc
"You're welcome to the next guy, Thank you" & "Grandma's bungee cord" got me 🤣💕👍
Do you think it's a poor design having the exhaust going under the oil pan? I would think this would keep the oil temp elevated
YES, and yes.
@@EBK_iN_MY_DNAwell they typically last longer than almost any car ever, so there’s that.
It goes different ways in my opinion as a technician. Exhaust under oil pan means some more time however it’s not that much depending on the vehicle and access space. On the other hand have the exhaust right by the oil pain theoretically heats the oil up sooner
Insignificant because air is a good insulation, especially moving air.
THE LEGENDARY MAN IS BACK! YAY
Again another educational video. keep em coming
Cool video, always include the torque specs, thanks

Clearance issues most likely
I always use rtv with gasket. I learned my lesson! 😂
I’m happy our company makes you ware safety glasses, has saved many eyes and law suits
Plus I have two good eyes being retired now
Very good job with the disclaimer....you never know what people might assume when trying to repair a vehicle and they end up severely damaging the damn thing!
Without watching video I'd answer NO. RTV is known to emit fumes that damage/ruin/kill 02 sensors!
Felpro specifically says only RTV the engine side of the step ups. You did the pan side as well. Any reason or opinion?
Is that the shop you built by your avocado field?
Yeah he got it mostly done. He has some videos of the build a few back

can the factory gasket and RTV both be used all the way around the pan or only one of the two?
What if you can’t see the RTV oozing out to know to stop? Just snug and wait an hour and then torque down?
Swear to god. I've never seen that kind of tube dispenser. Threw me for a loop
I have been searching for those tube squeezers but can't find them anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. $58 on Amazon so a bit pricey. Will look for a Chinese knock off 🙂

I'm facing this on my DSM. To RTV or not to RTV an oil pan? Sucks to deal with these down pipes.
man it must be so nice to have that lift!!!

I have a question I have Toyota t100 and the gasket comes with 2 similar gasket, should I install both of them or only one.
No worries man! I hear safety squints work almost as good! 😂
You make it look COOL 😎

Dude, keep up the great work.
Brother, your hair is too oily. That makes me wonder what kind of oil you using. 🤔
Good videos, been following you for years. Keep it up brother.
Sae30 😄
Why you do not clean underbelly from oil and sand. You will open the oil pan an all that sand can get in, right?
13:18 I think grandma wants her walking stick, aka the hood opener, back too.
Another great one.
Hey there going to be any RnW láser etched ratcheting long wrenches in the descriptions? Day dreaming... for a friend... 😉
Dreams do come true :) stay tuned.
Would you use Rtv on a valve cover gasket as well? Can’t find anything from the manufacturer to use either way. Working on a 07 VW Beetle
Yes. let it tack up for 20 minutes..then attach
Great Vid, thanks!

I use denital string to tie it in place and no silicone
5:52 “my yoiyahu” 😂😂😂 what!? What did you say?
Nice work.
Make sure to wear safety glasses
That looks pretty easy why does it cost so much to have it done?
Hello what part gasket number? Thanks
Can I use rtv instead of a gasket if unable to find one ????
Yes, install same way he explained. You do thick bead all around then hand tight to squeeze out then wait hour then torque down all way. Best to get gasket though if the part calls for it
"you're welcome next guy who has to take this off" ..... "Thank you" bahahahahaha!!!
Did he put oil back in the car?
is it possible for me to bring my car in for u to do some work on it? Im in North Park.
Awesome !

my future self thanks you!!! hahaha AMAZING VIDEO!
Never cleaned the outside of the pan???
Lmao I was definitely wondering about the eye protection 😂😂
Nice
Superb......
I always wait 20 minutes and then retorque again.
I have similar oil leak same location from my 1995 honda odyssey ex with 370,000 miles
Dude, just drop the exhaust down pipe..I'd also use a plastic razor blade or scotch Brite pad to clean surfaces.
Finally someone else caught it lol
DOING MY SELF I WOULD USE HONDA OIL PAN GASKET IF AVAILABLE & HONDA BOND SILICONE , 100% WORKS & GOOD FOR 10 YEARS , THAT IS FROM MY EXPERIENCE.
Yeah well toyota doesn't make german gaskets 😅 I hate BMW markups
If it had been me doing this job I would have spent half a day just trying to get the O2 sensor out.
Hey hey hey heyyy!!!
I always wanted to ask...
Are you 1/2 Mexican or. Something?
Sorry if i bother you
....
💪💥👍🙋
same reason i go with ..why no protection ....I LOST IT ...Ooooooooo ok
[those, new blue gaskets I don't like them]
