Hello from Oklahoma! Interesting Video. The AR style rifle with a 24 in. barrel is a different animal than the 16" carbine. The critters are gonna love U tonite!
If only the TCM was a more popular round with multiple sources for rifles and ammo. I would be all in on that. A good comparison would be the 5.7 vs 22 TCM.
From a handgun the .22TCM is slightly more powerful, but from a rifle it's way more powerful than 5.7. I want to do the comparison, just don't have the 5.7 carbine yet...
Parent case is 223 rem / 5.56mm NATO, open source so will never die. Good for handloaders. Reload 223 rem and if you get a split case, cut it down to 22TCM. You may find the Wiki article helpful en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_TCM
You can get AR DI uppers in 22TCM. McGowen Precision and 'Tim The AR Guy' both offer AR15 DI gas barrels. KAK Industry also have direct blowback AR uppers. Can get a complete AR upper, or just the barrel and build your own. But will need TCM/pistol cal conversion mags. You may find the Wiki article helpful en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_TCM
I did not know they made a rifle for .22TCM. I really liked it in pistol format, so rifle sure is interesting. Should be a ton of energy with not a ton of recoil.
By Wikipedia, looks like .22 Hornet and .22 TCM are almost exactly the same. Hornet edges it out a wee bit, but it's rated with 24" barrel vs. 22" TCM.
@@exothermal.sprocket Search online. Ammo Supply Warehouse has cases of 22TCM ammo for $0.32 a round. Both 40gr, and 39gr (9R) options. There is no shortage. Half the price of FN 5.7mm. And slightly cheaper than bulk pack 223 rem at $0.40 a round.
Love it- see my review video on it about 2 months ago. I had heard there were some issues with bad barrels causing accuracy issues, but mine shoots good and I would think any brand new one from the factory would be good to go at this point? I assume they are aware of what happened (it's been years) and I think that might have something to do with why you can't find them on the shelves anymore. When the pistols came out they were all the craze, but you can't find those anymore either. I honestly thought they were all discontinued- who is ordering it for you?
@@BuckeyeBallistics I buy all my guns from A.F boyers hardware in Pennsylvania. They ordered it for me almost 5 months ago. But this is pretty normal from RIA. I ordered a BIG ROCK. 6 inch match grade double stacked 1911 in 10 mm and it took about 7 months to come in. It was worth the wait.
22TCM parent case is 223 rem. Basically 223 short. Yes it can be chambered in 9mm platforms with a barrel swap and with the right conversion mags. You may find the 22TCM Wiki article helpful en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_TCM
I've never seen a 22TCM round fragment, now I don't have a rifle but I have a 22TCM pistol and a completely flattened 22TCM round that I dug out of a vest. But cool video.
There's a .222 Magnum too which is a tiny bit more powerful than .223 whereas .222 is a bit less powerful than .223..222 and .222 Magnum are popular in countries which ban weapons which use military rounds.
What length barrel is on your ar15 ? 3200 fps for the .223 is going to require a 20 inch barrel . If your barrel is shorter and it looks like it is that would explain the lack of performance .
You only lose 100-150fps by going from a 20" down to a 16" which is only a difference of about 5-6%. You realize that even with this reduction, the .223 is still going faster and is still far more powerful than the .22TCM right? The "lack of performance" compared to the .22TCM is exactly what I said it was in the video- 2 vastly different bullet designs. You got a nearly flat faced semi jacketed lead soft point hollow point for the .22TCM, compared to an elongated pointy full copper jacked hollow point that is nearly half the diameter (the hole) for the .223. It is 100% down to the bullet design. And they don't make semi jacketed lead soft point hollow points for .223, so it's impossible for me to use the same design for both otherwise I would have. The .223 is still more powerful from a 16" barrel, it is absolutely the bullet design causing the results...
It's basically a shortened .223 but it uses a different powder so even though it's only half the length, it's nearly 3/4 the power. It was far more popular in their handgun where it beat the popular(ish) 5.7x28 cartridge in terms or overall power, yet it's far more powerful from a rifle length barrel as you see here...

I was waiting for someone to say this. The angle of the camera makes it look like I was way closer to it than I was, it's an optical illusion due to the camera placement. In reality I was shooting nearly 12" over top of it...

I'd say the TCM won 🏆
For sure, and definately not what I expected. Bullet design is everything when it comes to smashing watermelons it would seem...
