For real. I didn't watch the video yet, but I know from experience that these calibers are far more capable than most people believe. People think the .22lr, .25acp, .32acp and even 380acp are underpowered, but they're actually very effective self defense rounds. They're all far more capable than most people believe. Even .22short/long are lethal and they're both about half as powerful as .22lr. I personally wouldn't carry a .22short if I had access to a .22lr or more powerful gun... but it is an effective round that will work in about 99.9% of all situations that people will ever find themselves in.
I have one and it's a good carry size. Finding ammo isn't always easy. I like the .22 mag also. I like the idea of the PMR-30 but they just look cheap for some reason. 9x18 is a snappy round out of a P-64.

@@elliszone the 9x18 is probably closer to the 380 acp than the 9x19. As far as ball ammo and hollow points go I think at some point since the worlds armies are basically tied to ball ammo the 9x18 effectiveness is designed around it using ball ammo to be able to reach vital organs through heavy clothing . It kind of makes sense because many of the hollow points tested suffered from poor expansion. It’s got to be tricky to balance penetration and expansion in a lower power cartridge. You can achieve one or the other but because the materials used and the energy available are so evenly matched it’s difficult to get both without sacrificing one of the objectives. Personally if I was to carry a 9x18 I’d stick with the ball ammo because it’s more likely to get to the vitals and the JHP ammo will either over expand or act like hardball anyway so I could train with what I’d be shooting and saving money so I could train more and increase my competency. Rimfire makes more sense in a revolver, as if you get a primer failure it will still fire if you pull the trigger again. An auto you have to clear first.
I think it's crazy when people act like .22lr is a useless round for self defense... but then I always remember that there are people that even think the .380 isn't lethal or effective for a self defense round. Throughout most of the 20th century, the .25acp was the champion of concealed carry... and it was always effective. I believe they only fell out of commonality, because of the federal law banning the import of pocket guns. I really hope .25acp and .32acp make a comeback, because small guns are making a comeback... and I would love to see the prices come down dramatically. Even if people don't want to carry a Glock 19 or even a G43, I think every person should at least have a pocket gun or mouse gun. It's amazing how small these guns can get and modern technology could allow for even smaller guns. If I'm not mistaken, (at this time) the Walther Model 9 is the smallest .25acp pocket gun and the smallest handgun ever made in a real self defense caliber. The Bernardelli .22 pocket gun is claimed to be the smallest, but I think the Walther Model 9 is slightly smaller. It has a slightly longer barrel (overall length), but a smaller grip and it's thinner, so it has a slightly overall smaller mass and footprint.
@deuce - I've always liked .25acp, would be cool if they made some modern double stack poly guns chambered in it. They would be smaller and lighter than .380 guns while holding more ammo...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I've been hoping for the same. For example, they could make a Beretta 21A sized firearm and give it 12rd or greater capacity. Many of these pocket guns are pretty fat, so there's really no reason to not increase capacity.
@@deucedeuce1572 please don't overestimate.22s. Cops have a saying "a .22 will kill anyone.... tomorrow". My dad has arrived at scenes where guys have six or seven .22 or .32 slugs in them, and they are still walking around pissed off. I won't even shoot varmints with anything less than .22 mag now, because of several inhumane situations with .22 shorts and lr. .22s are also notorious underperformers in pistols.
I have a CZ-83 that I bought for $250 a decade ago, back when I was broke af. It never let me down. I kept it stoked with XTP ammo which does well in .380 ACP, I found the best luck with Wilson Combat XTP load. But if your gun will cycle it, Speer Gold Dot and Hornady Critical Defense are good .380 hollow points as well. Although I generally recommend a 9mm for self defense, if you're on a budget and willing to do the necessary research and practice it takes a .380 can absolutely do what you need it to.
That CZ 83 has just over a 4 inch barrel, actually pushing a hollow point over 1000 fps, creating more energy than the short 2.5 inch barrels on some .380 subcompact. It is an excellent pistol!
Great comparison.. I think it shows that you don't want to be hit by any of these. Shot placement would be important. I recently saw a video where they would shooting 22LR from a high end precision rifle. They were shooting one of those ballistic torso's and head.. with all the ribs and organs inside. Not clothing on the target.. so just bare gel. They found that 22LR was lethal at any range you could hit the target.. 300 yards I think. Beyond that they could not reliably hit it. But any time they did hit it.. it went thru the entire torso unless it hit a rib.. then it fractured and still caused lethal damage. They were surprised by the outcome.
@@BuckeyeBallistics Yep any piece of metal traveling at high velocity is going to be dangerous lol. People tend underestimate 22 long rifle. But you shouldn't..
If I had to use a 22lr for defense, the silver tip would be my choice. I carry my LCPII 380 a lot in the hot days of summer. Its been exceptionally reliable and Im very accurate with it. I'd have the new S&W Bodyguard 2.0 right now but a gun shop I go to often had a Beretta 950 25 ACP a price I couldn't walk away from. When I need something truly tiny I will carry my Baby Browning 25 or my Keltec P32. They're both extremely reliable and they don't print enough to be noticed. I prefer my 9mms, 357 or 1 of my 40s but when I need something tiny Ill carry one of my mouse guns over not carrying at all
Based on my gel tests I would carry Interceptors, Supermaximums, Velocitors, or Stingers in that order in .22LR. But I wanted to use something that was actually marketed for handguns in this video so that's why I used the Silvertips (not a fan of the Punch or Uppercut). I really want one of those P32's...
Yes, the other rounds mentioned are all excellent choices. I'm just impressed with the segmented Win load. If you wait until a sale is run you can get the Keltec P32 for just under three beans. They take a little time to master as the trigger is truly terrible and the sites near to nonexistent but put an armalaser on it and practice. It becomes a great little cc or back up with recoil close to 22 mag. Feed it FMJ and it will run like a Swiss watch. You have to keep the overall length of the cartridge long enough to mostly fill the mag or you run the risk of rim lock so hollow points must be chosen by length.
i EDC 17 rounds of 40gr round nose cci mini-mags. no chance i would carry hollow points or fragmenting for self-defense. regular round nose .22lr are soft enough lead as they are.
If war were declared on all watermelons, your use of hollowpoints might be a war crime, but the authorities won't come for you until after they punish Gallager😂😂😂
Nice video! Great sound! I moved, and I miss hearing my crickets now! Dad liked hearing them but had bad tinnitus from shooting and racing, so I put some in a cage and put a microphone from a PA system in it. Everyone in the area thought there was a 200lb cricket running around! It was funny watching him chirp, hear himself over the speaker, and freak out, then he got cocky and kept going! 😅
One thing I have noticed with all the people talking about how the .22Lr is not enough for self-D on Y/T. Is that they all just show the damage of 1 round and say it's an anemic little round I sometimes hear that about the .380 as well. That's why you have 10-12 rounds use them and it will stop any problem people should state that.
See my short "Why .22lr might be good for self defense" or something like that (my shorts list is small). Very high rate of fire and accuracy with zero recoil is something to be reckoned with...
If you need 10-12 rounds per attacker you better hope you don’t get attacked by more than one person 😂 In what world is choosing the bare minimum to protect your life a good idea?
@ So have you ever heard of carrying more than one mag? Also if your expecting multiple attackers just where are you hanging out? I never said a .22Lr was a good choice for a combat weapon. Or if your having gun battles on a regular bases. My comment was UA-camrs are acting like your only allowed to shoot one time & that's it a .22Lr is far from the bare minimum.
@ why carry more than one mag when one mag of 9 will suffice? 15 rounds of 9 will stop 3-5 attackers. It isn’t unheard of in my area for people to get jumped by 3-5 guys, and having a 22 in that situation would get you killed. And when it comes to guns, 22LR quite literally is the bare minimum (excluding exotic novelty rounds). It’s the weakest of the commercially available rounds, and possibly the least reliable round available for purchase today.
@@NG.. Carry more than one mag even in 9mm what do you do if your one mag effs-up after the first shot? I don't want to know your address but just where do you live if that's a common thing that people are being jumped by 3-5 guys? You need to move! Really great job at this. Suggestion for another video is the wildly different warheads that can be used in the 44 magnum. I've spent decades exploring performance in the great 44, the most surprising with the 180 grain hollow point, would not even shoot through a raccoon but it virtually turned the entire critter that was killing my chickens into a bag of soup inside. Might be a thought for someone who is very cognizant of ricochets, or at least to minimize the possibility, and through a massive spectrum of Factory and handmade bullets, this thing can do just about anything if you customize the load for your desired ballistic outcome. All the large caliber handgun rounds can fall into one group with many options available as for bullets particularly if you hand load.
As far as I understand it, 22 Magnum out of a revolver has pretty similar muzzle energy to 32 ACP out of a pistol. They are the absolute smallest calibers I would ever go with for a daily carry. Yes 380 is even better for autos, as is the 38 special for revolvers. But both of those calibers can be quite snappy out of pocket sized guns if that is the form factor you are wanting. 32 ACP and 22 Mag are much more ideal for weapons of that size in my personal opinion. The .22 LR and 25 ACP can work in a pinch, but are generally best left for use as backup or special case carry pistols.
There is (or was) a shorter version of the .22 short. I think it was called the .22 cb cap if memory serves. It was intended to practice in your parlor or basement.
My edc is a 9mm and I've been thinking about something a little bit smaller and im leaning towards 32 acp but that's mainly because im fond of the caliber
@BuckeyeBallistics the trx...composite .380 is identical to a 9mm in power. A .380 actually is just a little bit larger in diameter also My test involved a propane tank from a gas grill at 40 yards. Both calibers had some that went clean through and a some didn't. The 9mm were full metel jacket also so the results surprised me
I’m shocked at those Winchester silver tips! The big takeaway here is that if you’re more comfortable with a mouse gun, the .380 makes by far the most sense to carry of those tested. That being said, 9mm mouse guns like the Glock 43x have aftermarket 15 rd mags available, and the Sig P365 is no joke either. The Kel Tec P.380 is my all time favorite mouse gun, it weighs nothing, fits into any pocket, and it has serious chops at under $200…and it comes in a variety of colors that the Mrs. might like, and there are holsters deigned for ladies that hook to the bottom of their bra under a loose blouse, hiding the gun in the real estate under the breast. That’s an amazing win.
Hi, I wish we could include more people from other countries about the beauty of carrying a small caliber weapon for self defense. Many times all it takes to defend yourself is simply showing that you are prepared to defend yourself. Nobody wants to get shot, whether it's a 22lr or especially a .44mag. 😊
Was the 32 a cobra? I remember getting this for less than $100 lol. And also, most people don't realize the 22 short, the original rimfire cartridge, was first developed in 1857 for self defense
Oh for sure. Back then usually a gunsot wound to the torso was fatal due to medical limitations. But as for it being a man stopper and keeping the attacker off of you, I'm not sure how effective it would have been at doing that. I'm guessing it was more of a deterrent than anything, as they knew they would probably not make it long term if they were hit by it...
Back then, there weren’t many surgical procedures that would remove boolets from your belly, so any caliber would kill ya. It might take a few days to weeks, so everyone avoided getting otshay..
Other gun channels who have tested penetration for mouse guns like these have stated that ball ammunition is most appropriate for low power ammunition, especially 25 ACP and 32 ACP.
I like pocket guns or mouse guns myself I don't know why. Out of all the things there though nothing is going to be the 380 with a rip round in it. I was extremely impressed at how well they worked and of course that's the highest caliber there. I had the same problem with my 25 ACP certain ammo didn't work real well. I was always getting light strikes and I thought it was the gun until I switched ammo. I really like 25 ACP and 32ACP It's just hard to find a reliable gun
Those mouse guns are impressive against watermelons but a badass like myself just slaps those silly little pills out of the air like annoying mosquitoes.
They work pretty good in gel from my TX22. What targets are you saying they work well on? I've seen videos where they don't expand from short barrels like these...
@@BuckeyeBallistics Factory recoil spring is a little weak letting action slide back just a few hundredths causing a light strike when pin hits. The factory firing pin spring is too stiff resisting the hammer drop. Stiffer recoil spring, stiffer hammer spring, lighter firing pin spring, and stiffer extractor spring is perfect EDC combo for this micro pistol.
Also I don't think you talk too much I watch these kind of videos for information on this and other subjects. I like it when people are thorough and that's what you're doing. I live in a very small town and I keep to myself and these videos are my main source of information pretty much my only source you experience and go through what I can't afford to do or have the time. So thank you don't let these people piss you off or get you down. I for one really appreciate this video
I seem to recall that the point of .25 ACP was to recreate the power of .22LR in a rimless cartridge, so it would work better in magazine fed pistols. Of course we then made mag fed .22s anyway, so it doesn't have much of a point - but it does get mentioned in a few notable books. Mike Hammer had a .25 pocket pistol (Though he preferred a colt 1911) at some point, as did James Bond.
25acp isn't all that bad in the right application, in the right gun, but agreed it's never the right tool for the job. Almost all the factory loads you can still buy have to work in micro guns that are pushing 80+ years old at this point, like Baby Brownings and all their ancient and poorly made knockoffs. Precision Small Arms specs a Federal load for their modern (and beautifully made) Baby, but they tell you straight up don't even try to fire it in any of the old ones.. not necessarily a +p but I suppose it could be viewed as such. We have a couple OG Babies and a PSA, they're a riot at the range, people don't know what they are!
Yes but 9mm already has practically no recoil in the 995ts, so it doesn't make much sense to go with the more expensive and considerably less powerful .380 over the 9mm version. Unless *zero* recoil is your goal that is- but again it's already extremely soft in 9mm. It would be fun to experiment with though...
@BuckeyeBallistics but compared to a .22lr? You'll get more power and be able to take out slightly larger game, when hunting. Also, the velocity of the 380 acp from a rifle is very close to 9mm rifle. I hope you do try it. Peace.
@joedouche - Is it, have you tested this? Because I would wager the 9mm gains more velocity on average from the longer barrel than does .380, considering it has more propellant behind it to further benefit from the barrel length...
As someone who grows plants. I can tell you, even similar size/color.. not all watermelons are created (grown) equally. Still fun test. You have plenty of gel test for standards
Maybe get a garmin chrony . Easy for me to spend your money , but some actual fps and energy numbers would be cool. If you do a part 2 with data , maybe wrap some old jeans around the front or some other material . That would be interesting to see.
Pretty good video. Take away for me is importance in selection of ammo for self defense. If a .32 is all you have for your self defense gun, or any of these calibers shown here, finding out a couple of the most lethal rounds for what you have just might help you out when the mud is a slinging, and of coarse practice . . . :>/
Absolutely, and that's why I do gel tests too. I actually have the .25 & .32 ammo in this video comming up very soon and have already done a ton of the others...
More info on the pistols would be helpful : make, model, size, weight, etc. The first rule of gunfighting is : the gun in your hand is always better than the one you left at home. If you refuse to haul around a 10mm but will carry a .22 all day long, then the .22 is the best gun for you.

7:20 Power is a funny thing. When the magnum plowed through the melon it took all its energy with it. The energy dump isn't equal to the energy of the bullet. Replace the bullet with brass or something else that expands less than lead and it will cause even less damage.
Not a mouse gun but almost as small. Ruger SP101 38spl with 90gr hornady lite! Speed either NO recoil!!! And it's stainless, you can sweat on it in summer!!
The results aren’t surprising. 22WMR was never designed for such a short barrel, so lots of unburned powder and loss of velocity. Plus, centerfire is going to be more reliable than rimfire. As usual, bullet construction and placement is more important than other factors.
I was only shooting 5 yards which is closer than the average self defense scenario of 7 yards. What difference do you think there is going to be between 1 and 5 yards lol.
It would be interesting to know the actual muzzle velocities of the .22 short, with its small case capacity, and the .22 WMR, with its large case capacity, but which might not completely burn in a short pistol barrel.
FINALLY.... A perfect use for those Fake useless Walmart Seedless watermelon's That's not what a real watermelon taste like... Wow , where did that come from? Anywho..I think a lot of the danger of the 22LR is that a lot of self home defense has been with a rifle
You must also consider on the 22 Magnum a revolver loses a lot of power compared to an automatic. You got a lot of gas the blows out the side of the chamber. That doesn't happen on a semi-automatic near as badly. That's one of the reasons I get the highest caliber semiados that I can have done custom or whatever way because they just work better as far as the chamber pressure. But they don't make a $500 Magnum automatic yet
Yes but the true barrel length being longer makes up for the cylinder gap. In a semi auto, they include the chamber as part of the barrel length, but they do not with a revolver. So the 2.75" barrel on the .22LR LCP II in this video is really more like a 2" barrel, whereas the 3" barrel of the 942UL I used for the .22WMR is truly 3" long.
@@BuckeyeBallistics I would love to see just exactly a percentage how much you lose and are revolve or compared to a semi-auto. Not that I'm suggesting doing that because that's more trouble than it's worth. I appreciate you getting back to me. Like I said I'm new to this and I appreciate any feedback and information I can get keep up the good videos by the way. I'm debating getting a tomcat and a bobcat just because I like these small guns. I'm also getting a Smith & Wesson 22 Magnum
I've done some research on it and while there are variables, a 3" revolver usually has about the same velocity as a 3" semi with the same load- again this is because the 3" semi is actually more like a 2". So if we're going to consider cylinder gap loss for a revolver, then we must also discuss barrel length loss for the semi due to the false measurements on them. In both cases, it's about the equivelant to velocity lost by going with a 1" shorter barrel- 50-100fps on average for most typical centerfire cartridges. But again a 3" semi is mostly equal to a 3" revolver. I could see where .22mag might lose more velocity being a rifle round, except for the fact that these ones are specifically made and marketed for use in mostly revolvers so the propellant is different to account for this...
@BuckeyeBallistics all of us in the firearm community would do well to cease with the dick measuring contest. It was probably instigated by manufacturers who needed civilians to keep buying what would otherwise be surplus military rounds.
Isn't the .22 magnum Gold Dot designed for short barrel at 1000 fps? I use 40 grain 1910-1875 in a rifle. However on my 5.5 inch barrel revolver I get around 1250+ fps.. much more devastating that 1000 fps or so? Just wondering?
So you're getting 1250fps because it's a 5.5" barrel. If you put it in my 3" barrel in the video, it'd be closer to 1000. Also, your 40gr hollow point almost certainly isn't expanding at 1250fps, certainly not at 1000 from a 3" barrel so it wouldn't be devistating at all. I have several gel tests with .22wmr at 100 yards from a rifle and almost nothing exands at 100 yards (because the velocity is too low by that point for expansion). That is the beauty of the Gold Dots- they are designed to expand at low velocities. And they are advertised 1050fps from a 2" barrel, so from my 3" barrel probably closer to 1200fps.

I saw that one one- there is a reason it has a warning on the box that the bullet will travel up to 1.5 miles...
@@BuckeyeBallistics
Yep any piece of metal traveling at high velocity is going to be dangerous lol.
People tend underestimate 22 long rifle. But you shouldn't..
I think that was a garand thumb video
Good to know, I'll have to remember this if I ever get one.
i EDC 17 rounds of 40gr round nose cci mini-mags. no chance i would carry hollow points or fragmenting for self-defense. regular round nose .22lr are soft enough lead as they are.
@yourmomma2995 Different strokes. But that's OK. We all do what's right for ourselves
If war were declared on all watermelons, your use of hollowpoints might be a war crime, but the authorities won't come for you until after they punish Gallager😂😂😂
Nah, Israel will get the blame😂
If you need 10-12 rounds per attacker you better hope you don’t get attacked by more than one person 😂
In what world is choosing the bare minimum to protect your life a good idea?
If 3-5 guys jump you at the same time it doesn't matter what type of gun your carrying your fu
Glad to see that after having the S&W BG 2.0 demolish the Ruger LCP Max in your comparison, you're still keeping the Ruger around to shoot watermelons 😅

すげー動画だ!おまけも最高!22 short HV. 共有してくれてありがとー!
WOW! GREAT ....EVEN PERFECT MARKSMANSHIP! THANK YOU!
There is (or was) a shorter version of the .22 short. I think it was called the .22 cb cap if memory serves. It was intended to practice in your parlor or basement.
There is a .22LR Colibri, powderless round.

@@bryonslatten3147 I've got some 32 short revolvers that have surprised me with their accuracy with how short the barrels are
I own a bersa thunder 32 ACP it was only made for a couple of years. My father had an old 32 ACP and that's why I bought mine but it shoots well.
I sometimes carry a colt 1903 pocket hammerless in .32acp bc it is so dang thin I can carry it some places I can't carry other firearms.
I've had a Tomcat 30X as my EDC for the last 3 or 4 months, I'm absolutely head over heels for it.

.380 is 9mm x 17mm. Didnt think that was small caliber really
@veedreen - Caliber no, but small(ish) power and guns yes.
More like a rat gun.
He did not say "mouse caliber" ;)
@BuckeyeBallistics the trx...composite .380 is identical to a 9mm in power.
A .380 actually is just a little bit larger in diameter also
My test involved a propane tank from a gas grill at 40 yards.
Both calibers had some that went clean through and a some didn't.
The 9mm were full metel jacket also so the results surprised me
Awesome vid. Very informative. Appreciate the presentation
Interesting video but it really depends on the quality and grain of ammo used. It also depends on straight jacket, snub nose, hollow point, etc.
Absolutely- that's why I showed and discussed the ammunition selection so extensively in the video...
Hi from France !
Dirty Harry would say that the best for defense is .44 mag 😂
"You just gotta ask yourself one question, 'do I feel lucky?' well do you, punk?"
Hi, I wish we could include more people from other countries about the beauty of carrying a small caliber weapon for self defense. Many times all it takes to defend yourself is simply showing that you are prepared to defend yourself. Nobody wants to get shot, whether it's a 22lr or especially a .44mag. 😊
Harry Callahan actually loaded his model 29 with 44 special
Was the 32 a cobra? I remember getting this for less than $100 lol. And also, most people don't realize the 22 short, the original rimfire cartridge, was first developed in 1857 for self defense
Yeah Cobra. And in 1857 they were even less powerful because they were black powder. I can't help but to think a rib bone would stop it...
@@BuckeyeBallistics Could be that the reasoning it was effective back then, is because medical care, especially trama wasn't nearly as good as today
I was thinking it was partially developed for the cyclists to ward off wild dogs.
Other gun channels who have tested penetration for mouse guns like these have stated that ball ammunition is most appropriate for low power ammunition, especially 25 ACP and 32 ACP.
You are correct, mini mag round nose copper brushed get the best penetration for 22lr. When it comes to 25 and 32, they just don’t expand.
I enjoy and appreciate your work. Thank you.
Nice work. What you dis with this and the larger set gave a memorable visual
Edit: ...what you DID
I like pocket guns or mouse guns myself I don't know why.
Never liked the name "mouse gun" But it was a good video.
Those mouse guns are impressive against watermelons but a badass like myself just slaps those silly little pills out of the air like annoying mosquitoes.

CCI stingers work really well with the Ruger LCP 2...22 CAL
They work pretty good in gel from my TX22. What targets are you saying they work well on? I've seen videos where they don't expand from short barrels like these...
@@BuckeyeBallisticsHave you tried upgraded springs in the LCP22, I would if plan to carry it, mine works flawless now.
@benthere404 - It's not mine

What was the insides of the watermelons looked like as far as destructive force and wound channel?

Extreme penetrators in .32 are great! Thanks for making this one
with hi point making the only 380 acp rifle, the 3895ts carbine, i believe that this rifle takes the 380 acp to a whole new level.
@@BuckeyeBallisticsdo it!
It's better than spit balls...

Pretty good video. Take away for me is importance in selection of ammo for self defense. Appreciate it
The top of the mouse gun is the 9 mm. Without specialty ammo it would be none other than a mouse gun.
The results aren’t surprising. 22WMR was never designed for such a short barrel, so lots of unburned powder and loss of velocity. Plus, centerfire is going to be more reliable than rimfire.
As usual, bullet construction and placement is more important than other factors.
Uh, this one was...
I’d be curious to see some of the Lehi* defense extreme cavitator for 32. I’ve heard the hollow points typically have trouble expanding
I dont get it why so far away from the target isnt a mouse gun for up close and dirty shots .
22 mags do not work well in an auto handgun. The extra long cartridge jams consistently.
I've seen the numbers on a 22 WMR, and you get down below a 4 inch barrel it performs too close to a 22 LR for my liking.
FINALLY....
A perfect use for those Fake useless Walmart Seedless watermelon's
That's not what a real watermelon taste like...
Wow , where did that come from?
Anywho..I think a lot of the danger of the 22LR is that a lot of self home defense
has been with a rifle
380 turned the watermelon into a langoliers lol
You should look at the Walther WMP, absolute beast
Great watermelon test

I don't know how 380 ACP could be considered a "mouse gun"
You should tell that to the guy on here that called a .45acp a mouse gun 😂
My LCP two does not like the silver tips either
