My edc is a 9mm and I've been thinking about something a little bit smaller and im leaning towards 32 acp but that's mainly because im fond of the caliber
@BuckeyeBallistics the trx...composite .380 is identical to a 9mm in power. A .380 actually is just a little bit larger in diameter also My test involved a propane tank from a gas grill at 40 yards. Both calibers had some that went clean through and a some didn't. The 9mm were full metel jacket also so the results surprised me
Was the 32 a cobra? I remember getting this for less than $100 lol. And also, most people don't realize the 22 short, the original rimfire cartridge, was first developed in 1857 for self defense
Oh for sure. Back then usually a gunsot wound to the torso was fatal due to medical limitations. But as for it being a man stopper and keeping the attacker off of you, I'm not sure how effective it would have been at doing that. I'm guessing it was more of a deterrent than anything, as they knew they would probably not make it long term if they were hit by it...
Back then, there weren’t many surgical procedures that would remove boolets from your belly, so any caliber would kill ya. It might take a few days to weeks, so everyone avoided getting otshay..
I like pocket guns or mouse guns myself I don't know why. Out of all the things there though nothing is going to be the 380 with a rip round in it. I was extremely impressed at how well they worked and of course that's the highest caliber there. I had the same problem with my 25 ACP certain ammo didn't work real well. I was always getting light strikes and I thought it was the gun until I switched ammo. I really like 25 ACP and 32ACP It's just hard to find a reliable gun
If I had to use a 22lr for defense, the silver tip would be my choice. I carry my LCPII 380 a lot in the hot days of summer. Its been exceptionally reliable and Im very accurate with it. I'd have the new S&W Bodyguard 2.0 right now but a gun shop I go to often had a Beretta 950 25 ACP a price I couldn't walk away from. When I need something truly tiny I will carry my Baby Browning 25 or my Keltec P32. They're both extremely reliable and they don't print enough to be noticed. I prefer my 9mms, 357 or 1 of my 40s but when I need something tiny Ill carry one of my mouse guns over not carrying at all
Based on my gel tests I would carry Interceptors, Supermaximums, Velocitors, or Stingers in that order in .22LR. But I wanted to use something that was actually marketed for handguns in this video so that's why I used the Silvertips (not a fan of the Punch or Uppercut). I really want one of those P32's...
Yes, the other rounds mentioned are all excellent choices. I'm just impressed with the segmented Win load. If you wait until a sale is run you can get the Keltec P32 for just under three beans. They take a little time to master as the trigger is truly terrible and the sites near to nonexistent but put an armalaser on it and practice. It becomes a great little cc or back up with recoil close to 22 mag. Feed it FMJ and it will run like a Swiss watch. You have to keep the overall length of the cartridge long enough to mostly fill the mag or you run the risk of rim lock so hollow points must be chosen by length.
i EDC 17 rounds of 40gr round nose cci mini-mags. no chance i would carry hollow points or fragmenting for self-defense. regular round nose .22lr are soft enough lead as they are.
If war were declared on all watermelons, your use of hollowpoints might be a war crime, but the authorities won't come for you until after they punish Gallager😂😂😂
I know this is a trivial comment.....but...I can't resist. At 15:31 the bullet hole in the watermelon that exited out the back of the watermelon was described as a 'wound'. A brief description of the word 'wound' will indicate that is not a 'wound' coming out the back side of that target watermelon. WOUND> an injury to living tissue caused by a cut, blow, or other impact, typically one in which the skin is cut or broken. This is in NO WAY intended as a personal insult or attack against content creator.
Other gun channels who have tested penetration for mouse guns like these have stated that ball ammunition is most appropriate for low power ammunition, especially 25 ACP and 32 ACP.
Hi, I wish we could include more people from other countries about the beauty of carrying a small caliber weapon for self defense. Many times all it takes to defend yourself is simply showing that you are prepared to defend yourself. Nobody wants to get shot, whether it's a 22lr or especially a .44mag. 😊
I wonder if the cylinder gap on the revolver 22mag would help loose power on this round. Only pistols i know of being in 22 mag is keltec but not small pistol and some over under derringer tiny pistols besides that trailblazer single shot in 22mag life card
They work pretty good in gel from my TX22. What targets are you saying they work well on? I've seen videos where they don't expand from short barrels like these...
@@BuckeyeBallistics Factory recoil spring is a little weak letting action slide back just a few hundredths causing a light strike when pin hits. The factory firing pin spring is too stiff resisting the hammer drop. Also I don't think you talk too much I watch these kind of videos for information on this and other subjects. I like it when people are thorough and that's what you're doing. I live in a very small town and I keep to myself and these videos are my main source of information pretty much my only source you experience and go through what I can't afford to do or have the time. So thank you don't let these people piss you off or get you down. I for one really appreciate this video
Isn't the .22 magnum Gold Dot designed for short barrel at 1000 fps? I use 40 grain 1910-1875 in a rifle. However on my 5.5 inch barrel revolver I get around 1250+ fps.. much more devastating that 1000 fps or so? Just wondering?
So you're getting 1250fps because it's a 5.5" barrel. If you put it in my 3" barrel in the video, it'd be closer to 1000. Also, your 40gr hollow point almost certainly isn't expanding at 1250fps, certainly not at 1000 from a 3" barrel so it wouldn't be devistating at all. I have several gel tests with .22wmr at 100 yards from a rifle and almost nothing exands at 100 yards (because the velocity is too low by that point for expansion). That is the beauty of the Gold Dots- they are designed to expand at low velocities. And they are advertised 1050fps from a 2" barrel, so from my 3" barrel probably closer to 1200fps.
It would be interesting to know the actual muzzle velocities of the .22 short, with its small case capacity, and the .22 WMR, with its large case capacity, but which might not completely burn in a short pistol barrel.
Maybe get a garmin chrony . Easy for me to spend your money , but some actual fps and energy numbers would be cool. If you do a part 2 with data , maybe wrap some old jeans around the front or some other material . That would be interesting to see.
Yes but 9mm already has practically no recoil in the 995ts, so it doesn't make much sense to go with the more expensive and considerably less powerful .380 over the 9mm version. Unless *zero* recoil is your goal that is- but again it's already extremely soft in 9mm. It would be fun to experiment with though...
@BuckeyeBallistics but compared to a .22lr? You'll get more power and be able to take out slightly larger game, when hunting. Also, the velocity of the 380 acp from a rifle is very close to 9mm rifle. I hope you do try it. Peace.
@joedouche - Is it, have you tested this? Because I would wager the 9mm gains more velocity on average from the longer barrel than does .380, considering it has more propellant behind it to further benefit from the barrel length...
As someone who grows plants. I can tell you, even similar size/color.. not all watermelons are created (grown) equally. Still fun test. You have plenty of gel test for standards
You must also consider on the 22 Magnum a revolver loses a lot of power compared to an automatic. You got a lot of gas the blows out the side of the chamber. That doesn't happen on a semi-automatic near as badly. That's one of the reasons I get the highest caliber semiados that I can have done custom or whatever way because they just work better as far as the chamber pressure. But they don't make a $500 Magnum automatic yet
Yes but the true barrel length being longer makes up for the cylinder gap. In a semi auto, they include the chamber as part of the barrel length, but they do not with a revolver. So the 2.75" barrel on the .22LR LCP II in this video is really more like a 2" barrel, whereas the 3" barrel of the 942UL I used for the .22WMR is truly 3" long.
@@BuckeyeBallistics I would love to see just exactly a percentage how much you lose and are revolve or compared to a semi-auto. Not that I'm suggesting doing that because that's more trouble than it's worth. I appreciate you getting back to me. Like I said I'm new to this and I appreciate any feedback and information I can get keep up the good videos by the way. I'm debating getting a tomcat and a bobcat just because I like these small guns. I'm also getting a Smith & Wesson 22 Magnum
I've done some research on it and while there are variables, a 3" revolver usually has about the same velocity as a 3" semi with the same load- again this is because the 3" semi is actually more like a 2". So if we're going to consider cylinder gap loss for a revolver, then we must also discuss barrel length loss for the semi due to the false measurements on them. In both cases, it's about the equivelant to velocity lost by going with a 1" shorter barrel- 50-100fps on average for most typical centerfire cartridges. But again a 3" semi is mostly equal to a 3" revolver. I could see where .22mag might lose more velocity being a rifle round, except for the fact that these ones are specifically made and marketed for use in mostly revolvers so the propellant is different to account for this...
FINALLY.... A perfect use for those Fake useless Walmart Seedless watermelon's That's not what a real watermelon taste like... Wow , where did that come from? Anywho..I think a lot of the danger of the 22LR is that a lot of self home defense has been with a rifle
A .22 mag is wasted in a short barrel. I have one of those 22 mag NAA revolvers, and its loud, but most of your powder comes out of the end of the barrel. Its quite unpleasant to fire, because your hands and face get peppered with hot powder if the wind isn't just right. You are actually better off with a short, or lr because it gets more powder burn and speed.
.22 mag is always more powerful than short, long, or long rifle from the same length barrel, even short barrels. Especially these defense loads that are made for short barrels, because they have different powders to perform better in short barrels. Yes there is a lot of wasted powder that doesn't get burned, but it still doesn't change the *fact* that .22 mag is still more powerful. That's like saying .38spl is more powerful from a 2" snub nose than .357mag is, and that's just simply not true...
I have the same Taurus 942m 3inch and I absolutely love it! I put the Ameriglo hi viz orange night sight and some Houge Lamo Camo grips on it and had my gunsmith polish the chambers in the cylinder and it’s a fun little gun and is a flamethrower!

this just reinforces my belief of .380 being the absolute minimum you should carry. That .22 was decievingly powerful, and that .22 mag was incredibly disapointing. And .22 short surprised me
The design of the bullet had a lot to do with this test. The 22 Mag is a good step-up from the standard 22 long rifle, or short. I love them all though!
.22 mag is not very good in short barrels - not enough time to burn up all the powder. Marginal (if any) gains over .22lr in a pocket pistol. Now, in a 4-5 inch tube? WAY better than .22lr. And in rifle barrels? FAR different animal vs .22lr altogether.

I didnt word my comment like i knew what i was talking about, my bad, now for the first two that replied to me, get a life. @stinkyfungus i am aware about barrel lengths, my comment was specifically talking about the instances in this specific video. I state .380 should be the minimum as the conclusion to extensive experience over many years with firearms. Theres a line i like to use, "nobody ever stops to ask what youre shooting at them" and it is still true. A .22 longrifle has plenty of capability to kill, Nevertheless i WILL NOT carry a .22 When there are thousands of options, i dont think you should really be picking one option when theres another option thats only marginally more expensive, for much more results.
Okay but those aren't really mouse guns 22 magnum is definitely not a mouse gun I wouldn't say that's pushing borderline 223 depending on the type of round your butt I mean essentially a 223 is a high-powered 22 long rifle just in a different casing which I wouldn't really call a mouse gun for say but yeah the 25 ACP that's sort of a that's a that's a mouse gun sure but the 32 ACP depending on the the round that's not considerably a mouse gun I mean it is a smaller caliber but I personally wouldn't call that a mouse gun personally my mouse guns are like a 22 short a 32 s&w short and and maybe even a 32 Smith & Wesson long but you know any modern ammunition really is a lot more powerful back compared to back when those calibers actually originated which was quite some time ago so that the powder the everything about them has basically got an amplified I mean it's like the 32 Smith & Wesson long and short and the 22 short those are obviously very meet calibers and they're basically planking guns or you know maybe squirrel guns I guess but I don't know of any Smith & Wesson long or short rifles I know that they have like revolvers and such but yeah they're essentially not even relevant to a 22 long rifle even with modern ammunition those would be more considerable to a mouse gun in my opinion but that that is my opinion what you're using I would consider to be pocket carry for a purse gun for a older woman that doesn't have much you know strength in their arms or can't handle a lot of recoil because you know they're older but you know I mean that's just me and my opinion y'all can go ahead and yell and tell me how I'm wrong I don't I don't really care whatever I'm just saying my opinion which is my opinion which is nothing else

My edc is a 9mm and I've been thinking about something a little bit smaller and im leaning towards 32 acp but that's mainly because im fond of the caliber
Kel-Tec P32 is accurate for its size and disappears in my pocket.
@@bryonslatten3147 I've got some 32 short revolvers that have surprised me with their accuracy with how short the barrels are
380 acp is mouse gun? Seems harsh
.380 is 9mm x 17mm. Didnt think that was small caliber really
@veedreen - Caliber no, but small(ish) power and guns yes.
More like a rat gun.
He did not say "mouse caliber" ;)
@BuckeyeBallistics the trx...composite .380 is identical to a 9mm in power.
A .380 actually is just a little bit larger in diameter also
My test involved a propane tank from a gas grill at 40 yards.
Yeah Cobra. And in 1857 they were even less powerful because they were black powder. I can't help but to think a rib bone would stop it...
@@BuckeyeBallistics Could be that the reasoning it was effective back then, is because medical care, especially trama wasn't nearly as good as today
I was thinking it was partially developed for the cyclists to ward off wild dogs.
I enjoy and appreciate your work. Thank you.
Interesting. Would be curious to see the 32 acp 68 gr Federal in gel test. Had hoped that loading would do better.
Agreed, hoping to gel test it before winter.
Nice work. What you dis with this and the larger set gave a memorable visual
Edit: ...what you DID
Another Gr8 video and good information as well!!! Thanks
Good to know, I'll have to remember this if I ever get one.
i EDC 17 rounds of 40gr round nose cci mini-mags. no chance i would carry hollow points or fragmenting for self-defense. regular round nose .22lr are soft enough lead as they are.
@yourmomma2995 Different strokes. But that's OK. We all do what's right for ourselves
Gran video, me gusta sobre todo porque son los calibres permitidos en México.
This is the first of your videos that I have watched and I like your approach, I subbed, now gonna watch your gel vids. Good stuff...
Awesome, welcome to the channel.

If war were declared on all watermelons, your use of hollowpoints might be a war crime, but the authorities won't come for you until after they punish Gallager😂😂😂
Nah, Israel will get the blame😂
I know this is a trivial comment.....but...I can't resist. At 15:31 the bullet hole in the watermelon that exited out the back of the watermelon was described as a 'wound'. A brief description of the word 'wound' will indicate that is not a 'wound' coming out the back side of that target watermelon.

For now 🤣
Give it an hour.
Other gun channels who have tested penetration for mouse guns like these have stated that ball ammunition is most appropriate for low power ammunition, especially 25 ACP and 32 ACP.
You are correct, mini mag round nose copper brushed get the best penetration for 22lr. When it comes to 25 and 32, they just don’t expand.
Great review thanks a lot
No matter what you carry,it's all about shot placement.
Hi from France !
Dirty Harry would say that the best for defense is .44 mag 😂
"You just gotta ask yourself one question, 'do I feel lucky?' well do you, punk?"
Hi, I wish we could include more people from other countries about the beauty of carrying a small caliber weapon for self defense. Many times all it takes to defend yourself is simply showing that you are prepared to defend yourself. Nobody wants to get shot, whether it's a 22lr or especially a .44mag. 😊
Harry Callahan actually loaded his model 29 with 44 special
The winchester did not feed in my lcp as well caused me to get the orgin 380 bodyguard

Great vid … thanks. 👍😎
I’d be curious to see some of the Lehi* defense extreme cavitator for 32. I’ve heard the hollow points typically have trouble expanding
Extreme penetrators in .32 are great! Thanks for making this one
I wonder if the cylinder gap on the revolver 22mag would help loose power on this round. Only pistols i know of being in 22 mag is keltec but not small pistol and some over under derringer tiny pistols besides that trailblazer single shot in 22mag life card
Wife's 22 ruger has issues with some ammo, but also runs great on auto match. 🤷♂️
CCI stingers work really well with the Ruger LCP 2...22 CAL
They work pretty good in gel from my TX22. What targets are you saying they work well on? I've seen videos where they don't expand from short barrels like these...
@@BuckeyeBallisticsHave you tried upgraded springs in the LCP22, I would if plan to carry it, mine works flawless now.
@benthere404 - It's not mine
@@BuckeyeBallistics Factory recoil spring is a little weak letting action slide back just a few hundredths causing a light strike when pin hits. The factory firing pin spring is too stiff resisting the hammer drop. Stiffer recoil spring, stiffer hammer spring, lighter firing pin spring, and stiffer extractor spring is perfect EDC combo for this micro pistol.
The first one looked like Moe

Great watermelon test
Very cool video!
Good vid.. bump the haters.. talk all u want. It's your video lol
What was the insides of the watermelons looked like as far as destructive force and wound channel?
Also I don't think you talk too much I watch these kind of videos for information on this and other subjects. I like it when people are thorough and that's what you're doing. I live in a very small town and I keep to myself and these videos are my main source of information pretty much my only source you experience and go through what I can't afford to do or have the time. So thank you don't let these people piss you off or get you down. I for one really appreciate this video
Light primer strikes are very common on the Ruger LCP II 22lr. The springs are not right.
I loves me some mouse guns. Was fortunate enough to get my hands on a bodyguard 2.0 an it is my new best fren.
Great test.
Good video! Thank you
Good video! Thanks.
Pumpkin Jack will have a nightmare before Christmas if he trespasses...
What Is the .25 caliber gun? Looks like a phoenix arms but with different grips
Yeah it's a Phoenix
Interesting video but it really depends on the quality and grain of ammo used. It also depends on straight jacket, snub nose, hollow point, etc.
Absolutely- that's why I showed and discussed the ammunition selection so extensively in the video...
Awesome video brother
Appreciate it
Id love to see this same test but all in one sheet of 3/4 plywood
Good idea
It would be interesting to know the actual muzzle velocities of the .22 short, with its small case capacity, and the .22 WMR, with its large case capacity, but which might not completely burn in a short pistol barrel.
22 mags do not work well in an auto handgun. The extra long cartridge jams consistently.
I've seen the numbers on a 22 WMR, and you get down below a 4 inch barrel it performs too close to a 22 LR for my liking.
Maybe get a garmin chrony . Easy for me to spend your money , but some actual fps and energy numbers would be cool. If you do a part 2 with data , maybe wrap some old jeans around the front or some other material . That would be interesting to see.
I really want one of those but can't afford it. I emailed them months ago to see if they would send me one and I just got ghosted...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I like what your doing, don't give up, you'll have a Garmin chrony before you know it...
What manufacturer made that .32? Also that 380 made the XBOX symbol on that watermelon lol.
Cobra I believe
with hi point making the only 380 acp rifle, the 3895ts carbine, i believe that this rifle takes the 380 acp to a whole new level.
@@BuckeyeBallisticsdo it!
It's better than spit balls...
Is the 32 acp a ring of fire gun? I didnt know those could take hydra shok or hp ammo
Cobra, made in Utah.
At those velocities the hole size makes a difference.
Yup. Hole size does make a difference...
My LCP two does not like the silver tips either
What about the Liliput 4.25mm automatic? You could test its effect on a plum.
Neat bb gun
Paul Harrel would beg to differ on the difference between the 22 and 25. They are about equal but still not an ideal self-defense round.
Monitors: Level 1
Harris: Level 2
Walz: Level 3
Vance: Level 7
Trump: Level 8
22short was tumbling harder than Boy George in 1989
,22 shorts won't cycle in a .22 LR pistol or rifle will it?. Certainly quieter.
No they won't. But you can use CCI Quiet "Semi-Auto" and they should.
As someone who grows plants. I can tell you, even similar size/color.. not all watermelons are created (grown) equally. Still fun test. You have plenty of gel test for standards
Thanks
Buffalo bore makes a 60 grain hard cast 25. I really want to test it soon.
I've seen those!
You should look at the Walther WMP, absolute beast
What kind of 25 acp gun is that? I've been looking for one but they're super hard to find.
It's a Phoenix Arms
What .32 gun was that?
Cobra
What about the .22 Hornet?
Show me a 22 hornet chambered in a pocket pistol...
Mouse guns? Anyone volunteer to stand in front of any one of them?
Mouse is a term meant for smaller non-service pistol calibers like 9mm or .45acp. The term can also refer to the small pocket gun itself.
FINALLY....

Wow , where did that come from?
Anywho..I think a lot of the danger of the 22LR is that a lot of self home defense

What pistol is the 22mag?

The close-ups were interesting. Who knew watermelons fart when they get shot?? 8-/
A .22 mag is wasted in a short barrel. I have one of those
22 mag NAA revolvers, and its loud, but most of your powder comes out of the end of the barrel.
I put the Ameriglo hi viz orange night sight and some Houge Lamo Camo grips on it and had my gunsmith polish the chambers in the cylinder and it’s a fun little gun and is a flamethrower!

great video!!!! buckeye i really enjoy these videos
this just reinforces my belief of .380 being the absolute minimum you should carry. That .22 was decievingly powerful, and that .22 mag was incredibly disapointing. And .22 short surprised me
I wouldn’t put too much weight in a watermelon test. What happens if one doesn’t carry the absolute minimum?
The design of the bullet had a lot to do with this test. The 22 Mag is a good step-up from the standard 22 long rifle, or short. I love them all though!
.22 mag is not very good in short barrels - not enough time to burn up all the powder.
Marginal (if any) gains over .22lr in a pocket pistol.
Now, in a 4-5 inch tube? WAY better than .22lr.
And in rifle barrels? FAR different animal vs .22lr altogether.
I dont get my imformation from watermelon tests, and i know plenty about ballistics.
A .22 longrifle has plenty of capability to kill, Nevertheless i WILL NOT carry a .22
When there are thousands of options, i dont think you should really be picking one option when theres another option thats only marginally more expensive, for much more results.
@@stinkyfungus see my above comment
Yes Sir.
Did you eat the watermelons?
