Theory: Gallifreyans don't have pronounceable names, their names are a rhythmic and tone based, instead of word and syllable based. AKA, their names sound like snip-its of music, like humming along to a tune you don't know the words too. So, taking this into account, what if the Doctor Who theme tune was the Doctors real name and the reason it keeps changing is to match the Doctors personality at the time?
I love this, and somehow it makes sense, as much as a show about a time travelling face and personality changing alien who flies around in a phone box save people, planets and the universe can make sense. Though does that suggest that the dumbest the master hears could be his (or part of) his real name, or that all galifrayans have the dun, dun, dun, dun because I’m pretty sure that beat is in every (Modern not sure about classic) intro sequence somewhere

When addressed as dr foreman he replied with "that's not my name. dr who" HE LITERALLY SAID FOREMAN IS NOT HIS NAME AND THEN TOLD THEM HIS NAME WAS WHO. @@Rognik Don't necessarily mean bring his incarnation back for an episode. Something like a flashback, or a reference. A picture on a wall, a peek of him from behind. The different incarnations of The Doctor gets this kind of love, but a lot of us have an appreciation for The Master's different incarnations as well. I miss Delgado's look: like an evil sorcerer or dictator. We barely get any acknowledgement for how his incarnation shaped how the character would be defined: a scheming mastermind who would dabble in any number of dark magics or technologies, pervert life and death in order to stay alive and someday stand as the Master of whatever and whomever he sees fit. A casting call could certainly be put out for an actor who can pull off the First Master, but my point is more that the legacy of The Master's character and the actors who have filled those shoes should be celebrated the same way The Doctor's are.

@Najawin UNIT most likely would have had some kind of agreement with Torchwood back in the day to have them keep their mitts of the Doctor (perhaps arranged by Jack Harkness, who would have REALLY taken Jo, and Mike Yates too, on a night out on the town...) in return for left over alien tech and\or bodies. Thus UNIT would have had ready access to Retcon to use wipe clean the memories of the public of their activities, in the 1970s/1980s however some traces would have remained thus leading the Brig and his boys into engaging in less than cosy action towards unfortunate members of the general public. Not only does Richard III replace Shakespeare, there is also one story that states Shakespeare never existed and was an alias of Kit Marlowe after he supposedly died. There is also a story that states Richard/Shakespeare was saved at Bosworth by a unicorn. And what about the comic that says Skakespeare was a pen name for the Dalek Emperor? Trying to reconcile all these accounts would give anybody a headache.
Maybe the Doctor just got his name legally changed on Gallifrey before he ran away which is why Gallifreyans call him it. I mean in the UK all you need is £20 and the Internet. Also Big Finish also tackled Delgado's regeneration with the Two Masters where [spoiler] killed him to create a paradox and destroy the universe.
I would argue that The Two Masters instead established that the Delgado Master and the Pratt/Beevers Master are two separate incarnations, since Beevers voiced a fully healthy version of the Master, just before being severely injured by [spoiler]. Plus, [spoiler] wasn't trying to kill the Master, [spoiler] was using his knowledge that the Master was going to be severely injured to fake his death. [spoiler] was trying to trick his associates into believing he had killed the Master in order for them to give him what he wanted.

Also during the 12th regeneration scene 12th said "to the next doctor" that he (i guess she) mustn't tell anyone his (her?) name. That speech is clearly not just 12th's goodbye but also Moffat's guide to whoever would be leading Doctor Who next (Chris Chibnell). So I'd say that was a joke, and to Moffat the Doctor's name is a secret.

My canon for the importance of the Doctor's name: They somehow erased their name from time and space itself, as a timelord's name represents their entire existence, and access to their name can be used to rewrite said existence. That's why he told 'no one' apart from from River, as I'm guessing their name is part of timelord wedding vows. Probably complete BS, honestly, but it's fun to throw things against a wall to see what sticks.

@@FTZPLTC I don't think it works at all tbh Chibnall made the doctor guarding the secrecy of his name redundant for me especially when rewatching the show since no one knows what it is and where the doctor came from. Also I think Moffat was a way stronger showrunner and writer than Chibnall so I'd rather him tidy up his own mess with the timeless child or at least make a better series than series 11 & 12.
@@doctereleven - Personally I liked it when things like "The Doctor's name is a big secret!" were just little fun things to bring up now and then in dialogue, rather than big important plot points that weren't actually going to go anywhere. I think the Doctors parents were really really big Mary Poppins fans. So his first name is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and middle name is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (really big fans). 38 syllables. Well Doctor Tyler´s parents have been in the show: Jackie (Earth classic Whoniverse) Pete Tyler (the Earth that after it was stolen and returned to the wrong Whoniverse and became Mondas) From where that mankind was saved to Gallifrey where they became the Timelords.

(Just like Clara in JITT and Name of the Doctor when she for a short time was exposed to the timevortex) Just like Madame Pompadore was slowly exposed to timewindows/timevortex Just like Lady Penforte was for a short time exposed to the timevortex and then could remember a life with the Doctor she had never lived. Just like the Widow in the wardrobe episode was able to tap into....after having been exposed to the timevortex/timewindow... Ok but there is more MUCH more.

So here one need to understand that Amelia Pond never had any periods, (source Minisode Goodnight series 6) & That the Doctor returned to save Amelia from realising that her most precious memories about her life had never happend to her. More precisly; Rory. Amelia had never meet Rory in her whoniverse. Rory was for her only ever a memory from Amy´s life inside the new whoniverse. The Doctor understood this when Amy called a duck pond a duck pond althou it never had any ducks in it. Coupled with the schizophrenic "hints" from Amys and others around her. Its plasterd all over Eleventh hours episode once one are aware of this; to many hints to go into here. I completly understand that on its own this above would not mean diddly/nothing. But here is where the wedding dress is the key to understand basicly everything in Doctor Who. Including that Tony Tyler is our Doctor.
I had a theory after a mishearing of mine, but it honestly made more sense the more I looked into it. "Azulian" Calming Blue. The eye of Harmony is within the Tardis, so the fact that the name would be representing the very thing he/she is wishing to fix, The Tardis, would be an embarrassment to him/her motivation wise. Naming themself The Doctor is a simple thing of 'I can fix this!'

I listened to The Gathering recently with the 5th doctor and Tegan and I wasn’t completely sure if Nyssa and Tegan were a thing or not in that before listening and even though they’re not and I lowkey wish everything could fit into one cohesive timeline it’s cool this what since you get great stories regardless and seeing the different outcomes of characters make things more interesting and fun
My two theories about his name... his name is literally "Doctor," as in the Gallifreyan word for "Doctor" which the TARDIS translates to English, or his name is the greek letters often attributed to him in expanded canon are his name because (SPOILERS): the "half human on his mother's side" revelation is canon, hence him having an Earth language based name. In any case, I think there's a good change his name is meant to be an Earth name.

Theory: Gallifreyans don't have pronounceable names, their names are a rhythmic and tone based, instead of word and syllable based. AKA, their names sound like snip-its of music, like humming along to a tune you don't know the words too. So, taking this into account, what if the Doctor Who theme tune was the Doctors real name and the reason it keeps changing is to match the Doctors personality at the time?

@@Rognik Don't necessarily mean bring his incarnation back for an episode. Something like a flashback, or a reference. A picture on a wall, a peek of him from behind. The different incarnations of The Doctor gets this kind of love, but a lot of us have an appreciation for The Master's different incarnations as well. I miss Delgado's look: like an evil sorcerer or dictator. We barely get any acknowledgement for how his incarnation shaped how the character would be defined: a scheming mastermind who would dabble in any number of dark magics or technologies, pervert life and death in order to stay alive and someday stand as the Master of whatever and whomever he sees fit. A casting call could certainly be put out for an actor who can pull off the First Master, but my point is more that the legacy of The Master's character and the actors who have filled those shoes should be celebrated the same way The Doctor's are.

Thus UNIT would have had ready access to Retcon to use wipe clean the memories of the public of their activities, in the 1970s/1980s however some traces would have remained thus leading the Brig and his boys into engaging in less than cosy action towards unfortunate members of the general public.

Also Big Finish also tackled Delgado's regeneration with the Two Masters where [spoiler] killed him to create a paradox and destroy the universe.
I would argue that The Two Masters instead established that the Delgado Master and the Pratt/Beevers Master are two separate incarnations, since Beevers voiced a fully healthy version of the Master, just before being severely injured by [spoiler]. Plus, [spoiler] wasn't trying to kill the Master, [spoiler] was using his knowledge that the Master was going to be severely injured to fake his death. [spoiler] was trying to trick his associates into believing he had killed the Master in order for them to give him what he wanted.

Here in Italy it's basically impossible to do so: if you want to change your name you have to request the permission to a judge, and he/she will ultimately decide if the reasons behind the request are actually relevant (like psychological and sociological issues related to your name - gender dysphoria, anagraphic register mistakes, offensive names usually given to orphans back in the day, names related to despicable historical figures like "Benito", of course due to Benito Mussolini, etc.).
If it's not a matter of great entity, you are basically stucked with your birth name until the end of your days, even if you can't stand it...

You missed the bit when the man who murdered Nyssa's father and stepmother, now wearing his corpse destroyed a huge chunk of the universe including her whole home planet. She then got a life threatening illnesses and had to return home for the cure but in the past because it doesn't exist in her current timeline.
Nyssa did not return home. She was cured by the radiation on the Terminus space station and stayed on to improve the treatment.

My canon for the importance of the Doctor's name: They somehow erased their name from time and space itself, as a timelord's name represents their entire existence, and access to their name can be used to rewrite said existence. Also I think Moffat was a way stronger showrunner and writer than Chibnall so I'd rather him tidy up his own mess with the timeless child or at least make a better series than series 11 & 12.

While it is indeed scraping the bottom of the barrel it is also a tale that I am fond of due it being my 3rd or 4th official Doctor Who VHS tape back in 1998.
By then I did also own a number of other adventures that were taped of UK Gold, but with it being one of my first official tapes as well as it being a fun little romp, makes it a story that always makes me happy whenever I fire up my DVD copy.

Yes our Doctor is a copy of the 0th riginal Doctor Tyler seen in 1973 in the Three Doctorsm but thats not what im gonna point at but first a small info.
I havent gotten into this yet but for each new Whoniverse there is a "repeat" of everything, the so called "never ending story" where the details may change to a small degree (from the previous WHoniverse) but never the outcome the whole Whoniverse. (the birth of "the Doctor"; for that Whoniverse; in the previous Whoniverse(See last scenes of last episode of serial Ghostlight for why that is important)
What I am about to point at next will at first make absolutly no sense but it should if explained correct do.
=We have already on more then one occasions seen how a Doctor have been "copied"/saved in the show and then how a copy of that save have been restored to "real" life.
I am here refering to the "Hell bent" episode where a copy of the Doctor lived for about 3 days at a time for several billion years.
BUT!!!
We have seen this before in the show
on several other occasions but I am in this case refering to one special case.
CAL, In Silence of the Library and Forrest of the dead.
Alongside Doctor Moon (our future (now and then former) Doctor).
Im not going into Doctor Moon here but instead CAL is the interesting one here in this case at this time.
There is something very very special about CAL that is hidden in plain sight.
First how she looks.
Brown straight long hair and other features...
Next her name.
CAL....
Thirdly that she in the past had been saved to a harddrive.
These above are 3 distinct separate "things"
that also fits in on an another very specific person,,,
First the look;
Is the same as the impossible girl.
Secondly
The Name....
is basicly the same...
CAL/Clara.
Thirdly and most importantly..
Both was saved to a harddrive.

In Twice upon a time we saw an copy of Clara that also had been saved to a harddrive.
What I am gonna say next may sound ridiculous at first..
that Harddrive is the same hardrive that the Raven saved/killed Clara too.
Cause here is what we have all missed.
Inside this new Whoniverse the show have mostly been in since end of series 2. (yeah you might only be aware that it have been a new Whoniverse in play since end of series 5 I know....but bare with me for now)
There is a brand spanking new Doctor for this new WHoniverse....
That was born inside the classic Whoniverse. And then became the Doctor as our Doctor retired.
And this new Doctor is Clara.
Since she accepted the "cloak of life" (role of being the Doctor) as our former Doctor gave the former ascended Master the knowledge that must never be spoken.
"I loved being you; shining like a sun while the planet (Gallifrey) burnt."

= The Master ascended after having been tricked into ascending by Missy....
(Missy have this entire time been protecting her ascention; as the new Black guardian over time)

What I am saying is,
For each new Whoniverse there is a new Doctor.
And we see "both" thru Clara AND Rassilon AND the Celestial Toymaker.
How the Doctors life/existance have been and will become before and after the time our Doctor was the Doctor (for the classic Whoniverse).
And as they the diffrent Doctors (for other whoniversis) lines up at times with our Doctors life.
That means we from the other 3s "fate" can see the whole life/existance of our Doctor from how his parents first meet, how and why he became the Doctor thru Clara) AND Rassilon as Rassilon once used to train Tony Tyler to become the next Doctor as Rassilon became the Caretaker/Curator/Eternal president over the mankind that became the TImelords,
Just as our Doctor have become, this includes how the first TARDIS was built after Rassilons original Timemachine´s "pilotmind" ascended and it crashed down onto Gallifrey where it became his tomb in a dead zone (the five Doctors) (Compare this to Trenzalore and the "semisentient" "dead" TARDIS)
(Not goin into here how we know the Dark towers name; just know it is OMEGA (not to be confused with Omega that only ever was a tiny sliver of the former OMEGA like the two different Great Intelligensis in the new and classic WHoniverse; the one in the new WHoniverse comes from the TARDIS arsenal...)
+ as we know Rassilon ascended at the end of the Timewar along everyone else at the Gallifreyan high counsil (rest on Gallifrey got trapped in an Schrödinger cat like state of both being alive and ascended at the same time as the Doctor froze time/Gallifrey in that same moment)
(The "unfrezzing" of time is what killed/ascended the TARDIS so it crashed down onto the burning/terraforming (former Gallifrey) (thats how it come to be on Trenzalore; PCs last scene took place right after his first in the 50th special = to save JW from ascention the TARDIS threw her out and teleported away with the former Gallifrey...)
(thats how the both the new and old) Guardians over time ended up in the void)

Same as the Schrödingers cat like trapped Timelords are the same as the Ragnarookians (its in thier name thier origin)..And they where always the real enemy in the timewar "against" the Daleks. as they puppitered the Daleks/Sontarans/Cybermen etc etc to try stop the Timelords...

There was 2 different Amelia & Amy Ponds in episode Eleventh hour episode (and for the rest of series 5) living in the classic AND new Whoniverse.
Exposure to the crack in the wall made both Amy/Amelia remember each others lives on top of thier own lives.
(Just like Clara in JITT and Name of the Doctor when she for a short time was exposed to the timevortex)
Just like Madame Pompadore was slowly exposed to timewindows/timevortex
Just like Lady Penforte was for a short time exposed to the timevortex and then could remember a life with the Doctor she had never lived.
Just like the Widow in the wardrobe episode was able to tap into....after having been exposed to the timevortex/timewindow...

Because the episode begins with Amelia wishing for Santa (Rose/Romana/New White guardian over time) sending some "help" aka the White guardian sends the Bad Wolf aka TARDIS aka herself to help Amelia.
So here one need to understand that Amelia Pond never had any periods, (source Minisode Goodnight series 6)

That the Doctor returned to save Amelia from realising that her most precious memories about her life had never happend to her.
More precisly; Rory.
Amelia had never meet Rory in her whoniverse. Rory was for her only ever a memory from Amy´s life inside the new whoniverse.
The Doctor understood this when Amy called a duck pond a duck pond althou it never had any ducks in it. Coupled with the schizophrenic "hints" from Amys and others around her. Its plasterd all over Eleventh hours episode once one are aware of this; to many hints to go into here.
I completly understand that on its own this above would not mean diddly/nothing.
But here is where the wedding dress is the key to understand basicly everything in Doctor Who. Including that Tony Tyler is our Doctor.

I had a theory after a mishearing of mine, but it honestly made more sense the more I looked into it. "Azulian" Calming Blue. The eye of Harmony is within the Tardis, so the fact that the name would be representing the very thing he/she is wishing to fix, The Tardis, would be an embarrassment to him/her motivation wise. Naming themself The Doctor is a simple thing of 'I can fix this!'
In the Armageddon Factor a fellow Gallifreyan named Drax recognizes the doctor as "Feef"

Actually the fourth doctor says his name in an episode. I remembered it when I watched it as a kid. It’s an old English name one that’s not used these days.
Why didn't you mention the technician who alluded to being one of the Doctor's school chums and calling him "Pete"? That was with Tom Baker, but I can't recall the episode or story, but it might have been the witches guarding the flame story. Too lazy to look it up.😁

I listened to The Gathering recently with the 5th doctor and Tegan and I wasn’t completely sure if Nyssa and Tegan were a thing or not in that before listening and even though they’re not and I lowkey wish everything could fit into one cohesive timeline it’s cool this what since you get great stories regardless and seeing the different outcomes of characters make things more interesting and fun
My two theories about his name... his name is literally "Doctor," as in the Gallifreyan word for "Doctor" which the TARDIS translates to English, or his name is the greek letters often attributed to him in expanded canon are his name because (SPOILERS):
the "half human on his mother's side" revelation is canon, hence him having an Earth language based name. In any case, I think there's a good change his name is meant to be an Earth name.
My head canon is still that the Doctors name is Basil, and he is to ashamed to tell anyone.
