Oh man, didn't anyone tell you? Yeah, Nintendo made Mario 64 available, but it's one of those haunted copies from a Creepypasta where Mario is constantly yelling impolite things like I HATE THE IRISH and I'M GONNA MARRY YOUR DAD every time he does a long jump.

Wario actually has more special abilities than you mentioned, that make him more useful in certain sections. He can punch enemies farther, and when bumped into, doesn't get hit back as far. This makes him really good against the Bully enemies and bosses, where he can finish the missions, that require you to defeat them, really quickly. He also can run when holding an enemy, box, etc., whereas Mario and Luigi can't run when holding stuff and have to walk. Nobody ever mentions Wario's other abilities, so I thought I would mention them.

I grew up with the original version of Mario 64, yet I prefer the remake. Yes the controls are kinda awkward, but everything else added to the game and being portable makes it so much precious to me. Plus there's this guy working on a ROM hack for 64 DS that fixed most of the controls issues ( as well as buffing Wario and Yoshi, nerfing Luigi and giving everyone the Wall Jump), so that gets rid of one of its greatest weaknesses, at leat for me. Love the original, but I love the remake even more.
Nice video. Here are also some more specific character stats and traits that may have been unmentioned: Mario: Good at everything Power: 2/3 Speed: 2/3 Swim: 2/3 Jump: 2/3 Unique Traits: Wall Kick, Turning while running is very good, Speed mildly affected carrying objects, Good Punching/Kicking far, Wing Cap Power Flower: Floating matches his "bubbly personality" Luigi: Many people confuse Mario as slower, but this was never true. From RPG games to Smash bros, Luigi runs slower. In this game, running is basically same. Power: 1/3 Speed: 2/3 Swim: 3/3 Jump: 3/3 Unique Traits: Spinning Back Flip, Skidding on water, Slight Scuttle Jump, Weaker at throwing objects and punching/kicking far, Slower at carrying objects Power Flower: Vanish ability comes out as an expression of his personality in being shy and hidden Wario: The instruction booklet mocks him for lack of intelligence Power: 3/3 Speed: 1/3 Swim: 1/3 Jump: 1/3 Unique Traits: Breaks Black Bricks, Throws everything farther, Speed not affected by carrying objects, Power Ground Pound, Sends enemies flying farthest through attacks, Heaviest, In Verses Mode can pick up other players, and spin toss them Power Flower: Metal ability matches his hard head and strength Yoshi: Most unique playing style Power: 0/3 Speed: 3/3 Swim: 2/3 Jump: 3/3 Unique Traits: Tounge, Egg Lay, Egg throw, Flutter Jump, Starting with any cap before level Power Flower: Fire breath matches Yoshi's fierce stomach Also worth noting the dialogue in the game is pretty well written; talking to different Toads as different characters has me remember some funny lines. The cut-scenes in the beginning and end also show different personalities.
I talked to one of the Toads as Luigi and he literally just roasted me. Here, I found the quote: "What?! You're Luigi? The world's most inept and least charismatic brother? Wow! Can you introduce me to Mario? Huh? Did we meet the other day? I totally forgot. You're not very memorable. I guess your brother got all the charisma in the family, huh!"

@@klauser9779 It's not just that he broke a DS (which to be fair he didn't actually do, since he mentioned that it was already broken), but I believe the fact that the specific model was the first one, which I think is the rarest model (limited editions not withstanding) because the DS only became as popular as it was when the Lite was released.
One time my DS opened in my pocket in class, and this loud as heck ITS A ME, MAAAAAARIOO, just echoes throughout the class, and everyone gets really confused. Never got caught :D
15:22 I know i’m a bit late and Nitro Rad probably won’t read this, but they DID somewhat fix the replaying certain levels problem; Hoot the Owl, who originally only appeared in Whomp’s Fortress, now shows up in Tall Tall mountain, Tiny Huge island, Cool Cool Mountain, and Snowman’s land. It’s not much but it definetely speeds things up a little.
Canonically, Wario has some of the fastest running speed in the Mario universe. In Wario Land, he has that Shoulder Bash that gives him a boost of speed just for pressing B and if you've played Wario Land 4, he can dash through boulders with his head and keep up an extremely fast pace. Not to mention, Wario can pick up and pile-drive giant dinosaurs 4 times bigger than Bowser in Wario World. If Wario was given his Wario Land movesets in this game, people would be singing a different tune. But of course, the Nintendo developers hugely nerfed him for no good reason.
I have a lore friendly way to explain this. Wario's power level in his games seems to fluctuate from game to game but in his strongest cases he is always surrounded by powerups (that are not the same as mario's), garlic, and cash. Aside from coins being everywhere, Wario is clearly nowhere near his sources of power and seeing as Wario games are very clearly far away from the mushroom kingdom, I imagine he may have uh.... farted away his power. I am sure Bowser planned ahead and got rid of anything Wario could use to meet his max power. This isn't even the only Mario game that Wario is nerfed either, look at him in any Mario spinoff he is just as nerfed and there is just as little garlic.
Wario (And to an extent Yoshi) was just included in this game out of contrivance, they wanted to showcase that the DS was capable on rendering not only 3D but four characters playing at once - early trailers focused on this namely by showcasing all four characters with wing caps flying, and that focus was showcased further by the multiplayer mode. However, the core Mario group doesn't exactly have four characters to all fit a role, usually only Mario and Luigi. Wario was created by a separate team within Nintendo as a sort of anti-Mario since they themselves didn't like being forced to make a Mario game, hence why Mario Land 3 became the springboard for Wario Land. Eventually though, Wario was added into the general Mario cast only to serve as filler for spin-off games, since they couldn't keep filling roles with generic Koopa Troopas, etc. In short, Wario was only there because they needed another character. By the time of NSMBW - they created the Toads because they could more easily adapt Mario's moveset to them as well as Luigi - but Wario and Waluigi would require more effort and, according to Miyamoto, would need to find a way to make Wario fart.
Did you know that that the Owl from Whomp's Fortress is in at least two additional levels in the DS version? It's really helpful for getting to the top of Tall Tall Mountain in the later missions, really surprised you didn't bring that up here.
Tall Tall Mountain, Tiny Huge Island, Cool Cool Mountain, and Snowman's Land to be exact! The owl being in Tall Tall Mountain alone fixes that level's problems entirely imo
"Il Piantissimo" is actually Italian and means something along the lines of "The very plant".Yeah it doesn't make sense even in Italian if that's what you're thinking.
SuperMarioZot Isn't piantissimo a term used in music? Often meant to play a particular section softly, as opposed to its counterpart, fortissimo, which is meant to play a particular section loudly
Twisting Dervole You're talking about "pianissimo", not "piantissimo" (I'm Italian, that's why I'm saying this). When you add -issimo/a to a word it means "very x". "Pianta" means plant and "Piantissimo" means something like "Very plant" even if it doesn't exist.

I got Sonic Mania on Switch, without a pro controller, that wasn't easy. You'd think the company that invented the D-pad would put a D-pad on their latest console.
@@quintonlilly9494 It fixes nothing though. A 3DS playing a DS game is more or less just the 3DS emulating a DS. Righ t down to the Circle Pad emulating a D-Pad. Even as someone who likes the D-Pad controls, playing it on a 3DS is basically akin to playing a PS1 game(mainly one that does not support the dualshock) on a PS2. (and yes, the same applies to the New 3DS XL and "the Right Nipple". except there it doesn't even get mapped to anything at all)
Yeah, especially when this version is superior in most ways, in my opinion. I don’t have a problem with the eight-directional controls because there’s hardly a time in the original when I’m NOT just moving in eight directions.
I tried the touchscreen, but for me its lack of any physical feedback for my finger made it a lot worse than the D-Pad. For me, I used the 3DS CirclePad. Sure it still only registered 8 directions, but I get that physical feedback like with the D-Pad, with the added bonus of feeling nicer on my thumb.
When I was in first grade I thought it was supposed to be two letter eyes like ayay captain but like an early 2000s trying too hard be edgey version of that, of course I didn't learn about roman numerals until third grade,
I wasn’t sure how to pronounce the Il myself, I figured it probably wasn’t pronounced “2”, but I didn’t know how to pronounce it. At least I didn’t ever say “2 Piantissimo” in front of anyone, haha!
The control settings we're actually really in-depth for this game at the time. I don't know if anyone remembers, I certainly can't find them anymore, but the DS shipped with a wrist strap with an inline thumb stylus. The game also allowed for players to use the touchscreen as a joystick with this peripheral for the included pen stylus. That's how I really played it and it worked far better.
7:53 The bane of mankind: fonts that display uppercase-i and lowercase-L nearly/exactly the same (such as THIS font: I l ). Is it so hard to display the little horizontal lines at the top and bottom of an uppercase-i?!

Fun fact about the first king bob-omb fight is that if you go back to it as Mario, Luigi, or Wario you can still pick him up from behind and beat him that way. Another fun fact is that you can get every star in rainbow ride carpetless with Luigi.

I remember playing this game on the go in the car a lot. My dad used to be in the Military, so that meant we moved quite a bit more often than a normal family would. I remember spending hours playing this game in the long car rides from one hotel to another until the battery on the ds would go dead. Such good memories. The times of us moving between states were the rare times I would be allowed to play video games longer than one or two hours. Now I'm an adult and can do whatever I want, but man. This game really brings me back to those times.
0:29 Unlike what the developers claimed*, the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3DS remakes were not from the ground up. There were very obscure engine specific bugs leftover that could only have been remnants of ported code, and a plethora of evidence contrary to the "ground up" claims. I don't know why the devs made such an easily debunked lie, as if nerds wouldn't comb over every detail. Edit: See reply
Huh, so, the devs never made a statement one way or another? It seems that it's just a really, really common misconception and the popular opinion is that it's from "the ground up". That said, the developers were confronted on the matter and they refused to clarify one way or the other, so that didn't help.
The only thing I recall is that the devs patched certain game-breaking bugs in OoT 3D, but made a point to leave some of the less harmful "fun" ones in, supposedly. I'm not an expert on OoT so I couldn't say for sure.
I'm pretty sure they used some type of MIPS to ARM recompilation technique, with maybe some ASM factorization to speed up necessary portions. A lot of it I'm sure had to be completely rewritten, such as the rendering pipeline to accommodate the improved fillrate and framerate and 3D. But the scale of the assets, the physics involved, the scripts used for game logic, it's all 1:1. How so many people assumed it was a from the ground up, entirely new codebase, I figure is half wishful expectations and half technical illiteracy.
So is nobody going to mention the fact that there are 4 doors for the character select and they didn’t use the last one for anything and waluigi was the only character that was missing? Nintendo must really hate waluigi
Which is something everyone just chooses to ignore apparently. All they ever focus on is the D-Pad (which isn't even as bad as people say it is. in fact it's actually pretty good.)
Did he just... actually rip that original DS in half I mean, I shouldn't complain, I did that too back in the day, but atleast that was from the commonly accepted reason: getting cheesed in a Pokémon game
It's weird how Goomboss is one of the extremely few times they've let a Paper Mario character; or a character from any of the RPGs for that matter; show up in the "Main" series, aside from Tutankoopa in Mario Pinball and the Star Spirits in Mario Party 5. And I'm still kinda pissed about that. Like, where the fuck is Fawful and Vivian in Mario Kart?! Where the hell is the Mario Odyssey DLC for Rogueport or the BeanBean Kingdom or Flipside or the Shroob World that deserves to exist but never will because Miyamoto doesn't give a shit about what fans like in the worldbuilding (Tho the ruination of Paper Mario is mostly Tanabe's fault from what I can see). Like, I know the only reason Pink Gold Peach; Queen Bee and Funky Kong got into those Kart games was because they had the models on hand, but jesus christ, throw us fans a bone here!
I agree with you, they seem so damn desperate at times to add more variety to the cast, but Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach? Really? I mean Wiggler and Lakitu were kind of cool, unexpected surprises in Kart 7, since neither had really had any major presence in... anything Mario aside from the New games. I think about all the cool shit they could do with Paper Mario characters, like Grodus, multiple skins for X-Nauts, I would say Count Bleck or any of the other SPM bad guys but I'm damn sure they would just look... wrong as 3D Models. Meanwhile there are also lots of Donkey Kong characters they could throw in as well! Chunky Kong and King K. Rool would make fantastic heavyweights, furthermore where the hell has Petey Piranha been? Sure, I know it's been years since Sunshine and the Gamecube Era but I miss when he was in damn near everything, it was kind of comical.
Seeing back on this, i wish the secret room had something better in it, like if you got opened, any character you’re currently playing would change into an alternate costume. Just something that says “you did it, now play around with your toys.” Rather than “you did it, here’s this thing, now get outta here, kid.” I did mostly just get this idea from seeing dealer luigi, but any idea that give our man in green a crisp suit is always a good idea.
Nitro Rad is an amazing UA-camr, and it’s a shame that his most viewed is barley over half a million he’s super talented and I hope he gets more respect in the future❤️
13:33 That's plank bridge was where I switched to touchscreen controls. The way I felt about this game's controls is, the D-Pad mode is there for beginners. Once you get used to the feel of the game and start feeling the need for precision, switch to the touchscreen controls. It's not perfect, but really, it's the best way to control a 3D game on the DS. Metroid Prime: Hunters had a very similar situation.
Now I'm imagining a parody of the part in The Simpsons: Virtual Springfield, where Bowser falls down the staircase and Kamek is like "To the laboratory!" or "Oh the horror!"
Not all red blocks contain power flowers!!! Some contain wing caps that can only used by Mario. Which may I say is NOT a power flower. It uses it's own model.
Honestly to me the original game is only good on virtual console, mostly because the controls really sucks on the official N64 controller with the half broken control-stick. At least nowadays, Idk if it actually was good when it came out. Another reason why I don't like it on the original hardware is that I live in Europe, which means the N64 is the pal version and only runs in 30fps and the game is way too slow and floaty for Mario 64. That's why I prefer the DS version, and they did make it so it's actually gradual turning that basically works like analog control, even though it's far from perfect. And yeah 3DS Circle pad makes it a little easier to hold as you said. I also grew up a lot more with the DS version than the original so nostalgia and/or what I have grown used to could be a factor here, though I guess that counts for nearly everyone. I mostly agree with everything else you said in the video and I think you were very fair in your review and I can see what you think. Also it helps for me that DS is portable and I mostly play 3DS and DS games anyways, so it's better for me personally in nearly every way (aside from virtual console which fixes most of my control problems with the original since that uses the American version and there are actually good controllers for the Wii U).
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooope, if a US game runs 30, it runs 25 in pal. Some games like Majora's Mask that run at 20, only run at like 15 in PAL. You guys really got the short end of the stick in the late 90s.
Xander J that was the 90s though modern day they sorted it out its down to pal region outputs i don't think any N64 game ran a game at a stable 30 as well but any FPS drops on a 30fps American version means bad news for us pal users
This was the first DS game I played, I love it to this day. I loved using the D-Pad for the controls, and I never had issues with them. The multiple characters was a nice implementation as well imo.
If I remember correctly, they originally wanted you to use the touch pad as an analogue stick since it would be more responsive than the D-pad. There ever was a rubber/plastic thumb protector that game with the original DS/Mario 64DS so you could use the touch screen as a 360 analog stick.
I always loved this game I grew up with the original and playing this game just felt like a love letter to the original game with all the added content and characters.
I have to admit, I'm kind of a "jaggy" apologist. I honestly consider that to be a higher quality look vs. anything that would try to smoothen or soften the original graphics, and I definitely agree with you on the look of PSX games nowadays.
I remember being so excited when this game first came out since I love it on N64, but I just could not get into it with the D-pad. So even though it’s in my collection, I haven’t played through it. I wish they’d “re-do” this one. A plus version of sorts. For Switch Virtual Console! Ahh. A man can dream right? Anyways great video, James!
I remember getting this game for my birthday. It was my first Nintendo game ever, and I instantly fell in love with it-playing day and night, even though I sucked pretty hard. Shortly after getting it, my first school year started. And on my first day, I was assigned to go in goostrot with a kind of awkward looking kid I've never talked to before. I asked him if he knew about Mario 64. And as I did, his face lit up like a star. We instantly bonded over it, and became good friends. Now, almost 12 years later.. That guy is still my best friend. With no signs of that changing. Thank you Mario 64 DS, for gifting me a friend for life. And thank you so much for reading my cheesy comment, hope you also enjoyed Mario 64 as much as I did :)
I hope that someone can remake this version either as a rom hack of the original or as a mod for the fan PC port, because playing a version of the game that takes all of the good elements of this without the setbacks it brings would be so cool, and the people who make things with Mario 64 do amazing work
I used to play the multiplayer 'star collection' mode with friends, except we didn't collect stars, we just played hide and seek. The seeker would cover up the bottom screen (which has a mini-map with the locations), and the hider would be given some amount of time to hide. And if the seeker could tag the hider (usually playing as Wario) then the seeker would win. It was surprisingly fun, I wonder why nobody ever made a hide-and-seek multiplayer game.

Me too! Until I flipped it open so hard the top half of my DS flew off and landed in someone's coca cola

"Bye-Bye! It's-a me, Mario! Bye-Bye! It's-a me, Mario! Bye-Bye! It's-a me, Mario!"
If he's not adding Waluigi he's wasting his time.
Why nerf Luigi tho?
What happened?
@@derpedblankyy148 His backflip is insane, a higher jump, a flutter jump, and can run on water for a few seconds.

Nice video. Here are also some more specific character stats and traits that may have been unmentioned:
Mario: Good at everything
Power: 2/3
Speed: 2/3
Swim: 2/3
Jump: 2/3
Unique Traits: Wall Kick, Turning while running is very good, Speed mildly affected carrying objects, Good Punching/Kicking far, Wing Cap
Power Flower: Floating matches his "bubbly personality"
Luigi: Many people confuse Mario as slower, but this was never true. From RPG games to Smash bros, Luigi runs slower. In this game, running is basically same.
Power: 1/3
Speed: 2/3
Swim: 3/3
Jump: 3/3
Unique Traits: Spinning Back Flip, Skidding on water, Slight Scuttle Jump, Weaker at throwing objects and punching/kicking far, Slower at carrying objects
Power Flower: Vanish ability comes out as an expression of his personality in being shy and hidden
Wario: The instruction booklet mocks him for lack of intelligence
Power: 3/3
Speed: 1/3
Swim: 1/3
Jump: 1/3
Unique Traits: Breaks Black Bricks, Throws everything farther, Speed not affected by carrying objects, Power Ground Pound, Sends enemies flying farthest through attacks, Heaviest, In Verses Mode can pick up other players, and spin toss them
Power Flower: Metal ability matches his hard head and strength
Yoshi: Most unique playing style
Power: 0/3
Speed: 3/3
Swim: 2/3
Jump: 3/3
Unique Traits: Tounge, Egg Lay, Egg throw, Flutter Jump, Starting with any cap before level
Power Flower: Fire breath matches Yoshi's fierce stomach
Also worth noting the dialogue in the game is pretty well written; talking to different Toads as different characters has me remember some funny lines.
The cut-scenes in the beginning and end also show different personalities.
I talked to one of the Toads as Luigi and he literally just roasted me.
Here, I found the quote:
"What?! You're Luigi? The world's most inept and least charismatic brother? Wow! Can you introduce me to Mario? Huh? Did we meet the other day? I totally forgot. You're not very memorable. I guess your brother got all the charisma in the family, huh!"

There is actually an owl in Tall Tall Mountain on every mission past the first one.

"Pianta" means plant and "Piantissimo" means something like "Very plant" even if it doesn't exist.

you forgot a control scheme, the touchpad. It even came with its own type of stylus for your thumb ^^.

These things are impossible to get now. But as its controls are emulating an analog stick to begin with it works really well on the 3DS.

Unlike what the developers claimed*, the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3DS remakes were not from the ground up.
“Fishing for treasure is seamless!” *fails to get treasure in clip*

Which is something everyone just chooses to ignore apparently.
All they ever focus on is the D-Pad (which isn't even as bad as people say it is. in fact it's actually pretty good.)
Did he just... actually rip that original DS in half
I mean, I shouldn't complain, I did that too back in the day, but atleast that was from the commonly accepted reason: getting cheesed in a Pokémon game
SweetWheatsy what happened?
SweetWheatsy i shook mine too hard and it snapped
Just something that says “you did it, now play around with your toys.” Rather than “you did it, here’s this thing, now get outta here, kid.”
I did mostly just get this idea from seeing dealer luigi, but any idea that give our man in green a crisp suit is always a good idea.
Nitro Rad is an amazing UA-camr, and it’s a shame that his most viewed is barley over half a million he’s super talented and I hope he gets more respect in the future❤️
"until we get Mario 64 on the switch this is your only option for a portable mario 64" well theres gonna be a new option in town in a few days I guess
And they suck. At least it's not 60 bucks right?
Playing this as a kid was amazing. That is the target demographic after all.
I don't like how they changed "So long gay bowser" to "bye bye"
Xander J no. PAL is 25 fps. US is 30 fps
Some Bad Batter wait really? Everywhere I checked it was 60 in America and 30 in Europe. That's odd.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooope, if a US game runs 30, it runs 25 in pal.
Some games like Majora's Mask that run at 20, only run at like 15 in PAL. You guys really got the short end of the stick in the late 90s.
Nitro Rad alright thanks, still that's even worse than I thought
Xander J that was the 90s though modern day they sorted it out its down to pal region outputs i don't think any N64 game ran a game at a stable 30 as well but any FPS drops on a 30fps American version means bad news for us pal users
3:24 I thought I was the only one that liked the anti-aliasing low poly aesthetic. That's pretty cool
Congrats on a million views

15:43 "he's the angriest gamer you've ever heard"
Well, now we have a new Example of a fantastic remake with RE2
I've never had issues with controls. In fact I found it easier
I know you left this comment a year ago but you know you can just put it in your 3ds and play it with the circle pad right?
@@FlakeyCakes that doesn't change it
About the controls, you can also play the game on a 3ds
EDIT: Oh nevermind i forgot he also mentioned that
I remember getting this game for my birthday.
I hope that someone can remake this version either as a rom hack of the original or as a mod for the fan PC port, because playing a version of the game that takes all of the good elements of this without the setbacks it brings would be so cool, and the people who make things with Mario 64 do amazing work
I thought it was cool that they put the mini games in New Super Mario DS.
Didn't some of them change?
Mario 64 DS was such a good game. It might be the game I spent the most time playing before I was like 8

He clearly says while
@@Mqstodon Yeah, thanks killjoy.
Heavy Jumping.
This game is honestly one of my favourite games of all time, I have so many memories from playing it as a kid :)
