I think a big reason it's so good is that it's made with the limitation of the console in mind. Rocket's design is several parts stacked together with spring loaded pivots which is actually very condusive to how the N64 renders things. The N64 had trouble with real time mesh deformations so they used models that passed through each other and rotated independely and Rocket seemed to be designed with that in mind. The art direction also is very friendly to the N64 as it had a small texture cash and a laggy RAM but powerful color rendering and a lot of bandwith. So it could render solidly colored objects very well which a circus is full of. Rocket uses pretty much no textures at all which is important since the character is always on screen any textures used on it are really felt. It really feels like they made this game completely based on what the N64 could and couldn't do.
Fun fact, there are also some pretty nifty cheat codes for it somewhere that were pretty fun IIRC. The main one I remember was an improved tractor strength that let you pick up clowns and stuff.
I accidentally played through almost the entire game with my control stick sensitivity set to half its normal value, it was only when I hit deathwish that I realized I was actually missing the ability to run lol.
This was always one of the most magical games on the N64. Something about it's atmosphere and visuals captivated me as a kid, when I was too young to understand complicated things like story or text. Just wandering around the worlds was peaceful in that sense, listening to the music and building a custom roller coaster. I'm glad you finally reviewed it.
From the game it really feels made with the technical limitation of the N64 in mind. It really feels like they worked on just making a game for the N64 and Rocket just kind of grew out from that. They made the game engine first and then the game itself rather than making a cool concept and figuring out how to do it. Rocket really feels like a tech demo that was fleshed out further. Something made to get to grips with the capabilities of the N64 and then Suckerpunch liked it enough to expand on it into a full game. The character truly feels designed with the game engine in mind, that it was created as a tech demo to test the game engine. I don't know if that's how it game to be but I wouldn't be surprised.

Actually I'd say Rocket's appearance represents his abilities really well. The game doesn't have a breathing meter because Rocket is a robot and thus doesn't need to breathe at all. He has no arms because he uses a tractor beam on his head, he has no legs because he gets around on a wheel, and his double jump is represented with actual boost thrusters.

One thing that surprised me is how some of the movements looked really familiar, that swinging animation looks exactly like Sly's. Its like when you can tell an artist from their specific style, I can see this being from the same people who made Sly Cooper because the movement just feels so similar. I think I had this with another game where I was watching a Wha Happun video about Drake and the 99 Dragons where apparently people who made that were also involved with Blood Rayne and watching how Drake moved made me instantly think of how Rayne moved in that game. Its kinda cool to notice that and see some consistency in their game design.

Hey Nitro, just wanted to thank you for always intruducing games to me! Definetely gonna give this game a try on my totally real n64 and legit Rocket: Robot on wheels cartridge!
Just replayed this one last month. I mirror pretty much all of your opinions but one more thing stood out to me: The music is weirdly bland? Every single track in the game has the exact same lead bells/piano-ish instrument. Nothing's technically hard on the ears so it's easy to not think about it, but there's so much missing personality this game could have if it just had a bit more musical variety.
Evertime me and my sister get drunk we listen to the soundtrack. We were too young then to beat the game, or even get passed the first level, but its forever stuck in our brains.
The neat thing is that Sucker Punch removed the double jump in inFAMOUS and replaced it with a glide, and even though platforming wasn't such a big part of that game, you were still rewarded for sticking the landing on a rooftop and keeping your momentum
Dude I love these super classic games you bring to the table that probably many people never heard of like myself. My first video of yours being Chameleon Twist one of my absolute fav N64 games actually. I even checked out your Silent Hill videos too, being my fav horror games. Just watching the footage in the video I can tell Sucker Punch spent a lot of time in early development getting the movement and jumping feeling right before really adding the little touches. Things like that you can just see when in motion.
For anyone that had the same burning question as I had, the name of the song around the 7 min mark. I found it- it's Animal Crossing (GameCube) - Original Soundtrack - Rainy Day. Again, thanks Nitro Rad for this inspiring and wholesome video!
I really appreciate how much you seem to enjoy making videos and talking about games like this. Rocket is probably my 2nd favorite game to revisit on the N64 (that isn't playable elsewhere), I play all the way through it and collect every ticket and token and then I cannot finish the ending platforming section. It is a doozy. I've never watched a video on it, so it's good to know there isn't like a final boss fight or anything, this game really doesn't have "boss fights" I think that would've been a negative aspect of this game if it did though, they just really aren't needed. Definitely a hidden gem, for lack of a totally not overused term. Second to my first favorite N64 exclusive Mystic Ninja starring Goemon as far as my bi-annual N64 kick goes.
I actually remember this game! I had a friend back in elementary school who had rich parents that bought him EVERYTHING, so he splurged on a bunch of N64 games and this was one of them! I never got to play it much, but I do remember it being really fun.
One of my favorites on the N64. I remember being surprised that no one seemed to know about it as I got older. It's a gem, I can always enjoy myself playing it again.
The first game I ever played was this. I have very vivid memories of just rolling around in this game and looking at all the colors, the music also is very nostalgic even though I never even got past the first sequence.
I always was always interested in Rocket when I was a kid, but never got around to playing it. Shame, I kind of wish I’d grown up with it. Something to look out for in the near future.
This was my go to n64 hidden gem. So glad you covered this! Would love a port of this on switch or something, a remaster feels like too much to ask for.
Rocket is by far the one game from the N64 I want to see remade or at least ported to modern systems. As a kid I always wanted to have it mainly because of the Theme Park theme of it but I couldn't find it anywhere. I bought a boxed copy a few years ago and it quickly became one of 2 games on the N64 I now consider to be "My most favorite N64 games I have no nostalgia for". The other one is World Driver Championship. At least at the time I bought my copy the PAL version wasn't really that expensive, I paid for mine CIB around 30€ IIRC, but it came on a boring, grey cart.
It’s honestly really interesting to see where Sucker Punch got their beginnings as a fan of Sly Cooper and inFamous and learning there were a few Rocket references in Sly 2 were really fun to see. It’s a shame Rocket never got a port to PS4/PS5 because it deserves it.
I love how timeless that music feels, reminds me of those early mornings when my little brother would boot this up. Also this really sells the idea of playing amusement park games, a fantastic debut for Sucker Punch and one of the early, maybe the first game to introduce a physics engine!
I wish there was an easier and legal way to enjoy older games like this rather than digging out my old N64 and going to eBay or Amazon to find a copy of this game. The game looks great and I think you're review of it was very well done!
This is one of my most nostalgic games of all time. I loved it as a kid and it was the first game I ever beat. I even did minor speedruns of the first stage since I knew a quick order on how to get tickets there. I think the fact it is so niche helps with the nostalgia plus I didn't get the chance to play Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie as a kid.
10:03 I'd have to agree. I played Spyro's 2 and 3 in the remake trilogy not too long ago, and it is immensely satisfying being able to skip the last area and go straight to the boss because I was super thorough with the rest of the game. I replayed DK64 recently, and, despite the fact I was super thorough, got tons of Golden Bananas, Banana medals, Blueprints, and even enough Crowns to progress, it was really disheartening to get through EVERY wall that needed a certain number of collectables to progress, just to see the game *lock me out* JUST before the final K.Lumsy Key, cause I didnt get two really obscure, one-of-a-kind collectables I didnt even know about.
oh my god you are reviewing this game? this is one of my all time favorites. i played this countless days, and i even still play it now. this was the game i always asked to re-rent it from blockbuster as a kid. thank you dude
It really made me happy to see this one pop up in my inbox, I have great memories of this game. When you were doing Glover, I was thinking to myself that this game would be right down your lane.
Not to mention that the music in this game is PHENOMENAL! Every soundtrack is so good to listen to. It’s kinda sad that I had this game before, but I lost it years after. I’m hoping they bring this hidden gem back soon! 🙏🕹
Dude this and Milo's Astro-Lanes are two games that were on the very edge of my memory. As a kid I always rented these games together. In fact your video reminded me that I never returned them lol. Both carts still have that Blockbusters rental sticker on them.
I had this game and I freaking loved it as a kid. My parents just out of nowhere came home one day from the store and brought this. One of the rare non-birthday, non-Christmas games I got.
I remember reading about this game in a gaming magazine when talking about Suckerpunch before Sly. I wish we could get a new Sly game. Also James, I “mustache” you a question.
Makes me very happy each and every time you mention/show praise for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy 😂😂 spent so many years feeling like I was THE ONLY ONE who knew that game even existed haha.
Having to get 100% to see the game's ending may be a pain, but it was a hell of a lot better than getting all platinum medals in Blast Corps just for the game to tell you literally "you can stop playing now".
Thanks SO MUCH! For making this review, and making it really good! This game NEEDS more people to know about it! Also you didn't mention the music, I want other opinions on it.

Dude thank u i had this game as a kid and never even remembered it until now..... cant wait to show my brothers
It means a lot that you reviewed this game. It's a lovely gem for the n64 with a lot of charm
I'm definitely gonna check this out. I love 3D Platformers, and am a sucker for the theme park aesthetic.
I absolutely love how his videos always end so wholesomely as the outro music kicks in.
14:56 I congratulate you on the pun, James. You make all of us who love dad jokes and the like very proud.
Discovered this one late and truly enjoyed it. First run I just did the minimum to get through it then years later revisited it for 100% completion.
For anyone that had the same burning question as I had, the name of the song around the 7 min mark. I found it- it's Animal Crossing (GameCube) - Original Soundtrack - Rainy Day. Again, thanks Nitro Rad for this inspiring and wholesome video!
Araki made a really bold move by putting a main character in a villian role.
What are you talking about? Who’s Araki?
I just played this last week. It's still a blast after so many years. One of my all-time favorites.
I actually remember this game! I had a friend back in elementary school who had rich parents that bought him EVERYTHING, so he splurged on a bunch of N64 games and this was one of them! I never got to play it much, but I do remember it being really fun.
My new favorite channel. The way you do your videos is perfect. Keep up the great work!!
Yet another platformer I'd never heard of. Seems like a good time.
You’re going to look out for it in the near future? What do you mean?
This was my go to n64 hidden gem. So glad you covered this! Would love a port of this on switch or something, a remaster feels like too much to ask for.
god bless this game. playing this in 2000 was an incredible experience
Yess, playing this at 4 yrs old was like entering a whole new world fr
11:29 Oh god oh fuck please no don't be that guy
*James goes off to buy The oppressor*
Really loving this channel! Good work Rad and the poor dude at the Halloween intros
One of the Top 4 3D platformers for the N64!
Great GREAT Game!!!
I think my favorite videos on this channel are the ones where you play games I can tell you really had fun with
Dude, I loved the Sly games growing up. I never knew this game existed. Rock on Sucker Punch!
I loved this game as a kid; it’s in my collection, and I liked that it had a red cartridge too!
One of my first games! Great to see it on your channel, Nitro!
"paint in the ass" is probably the best pun I've ever heard
10:03 I'd have to agree. I played Spyro's 2 and 3 in the remake trilogy not too long ago, and it is immensely satisfying being able to skip the last area and go straight to the boss because I was super thorough with the rest of the game. I replayed DK64 recently, and, despite the fact I was super thorough, got tons of Golden Bananas, Banana medals, Blueprints, and even enough Crowns to progress, it was really disheartening to get through EVERY wall that needed a certain number of collectables to progress, just to see the game *lock me out* JUST before the final K.Lumsy Key, cause I didnt get two really obscure, one-of-a-kind collectables I didnt even know about.
oh man, i LOVED rocket as a kid! I hope it gets a re-release! :D
Literally the other day I was thinking about how you should do this game
Luke Kavanagh Me too! I almost commented that on his last video.
oh my god you are reviewing this game? this is one of my all time favorites. i played this countless days, and i even still play it now. this was the game i always asked to re-rent it from blockbuster as a kid. thank you dude
It really made me happy to see this one pop up in my inbox, I have great memories of this game. When you were doing Glover, I was thinking to myself that this game would be right down your lane.
You haven’t truly experienced Rocket until you jump out of the Hot Dog Mobile at the last second at max speed.
Not to mention that the music in this game is PHENOMENAL! Every soundtrack is so good to listen to. It’s kinda sad that I had this game before, but I lost it years after. I’m hoping they bring this hidden gem back soon! 🙏🕹
Rocket gets hit by a hammer then an ad about migraines play
Dude this and Milo's Astro-Lanes are two games that were on the very edge of my memory. As a kid I always rented these games together. In fact your video reminded me that I never returned them lol. Both carts still have that Blockbusters rental sticker on them.
I had this game and I freaking loved it as a kid. My parents just out of nowhere came home one day from the store and brought this. One of the rare non-birthday, non-Christmas games I got.
You know, I was wondering when you would review the 3rd entry in the Ubisoft N64 Platforming trilogy! Thanks for the upload, James!
Oh man dude I can’t believe you’re talking about this game. This is an old favorite of mine and I never hear anyone talking about it
Having to get 100% to see the game's ending may be a pain, but it was a hell of a lot better than getting all platinum medals in Blast Corps just for the game to tell you literally "you can stop playing now".
Thanks SO MUCH! For making this review, and making it really good! This game NEEDS more people to know about it! Also you didn't mention the music, I want other opinions on it.
