my 2006 bmw e87 120d wont start ewery time i replace battery or disconnect it. its the same with ibs wire conneced or disconnected. so a guy with diagnostic must set something to make car working again. as i remember its always something with CAS module problem. and maybe something else too. why is this happening ? and what is cheappest diagnostic tool i can buy ,to doo it myself next time ?
I had the same issue. For ( quick fix or emergency ) disconnect the negative terminal from the battery (Very Important) before you proceed the next step., then short the circuit from the front hood. There is a positive terminal that connect to the battery. used a wire clip connect to positive and touch the engine block for few second. This should reset all electronic. After that remove the wire clip. Reconnect the battery negative terminal. Voila your car should start. Remember this is a temporally fixed. The underlining issue is still there. Once you stop the engine. You will have the same issue. To rectify the issue, replace with a new same model factory battery. ie: Model H8 AGM . And register the battery and Reset the CAS counter for ELV and Cas. This should fixed the issue. For the Battery Registration and CAS counter reset. I was using the software tool 32. for window 7. But is a easy software android apps. MHD N54 download apps on your android phone. used the MHD bluetooth adaptor or K+DCAN car diagnostic tool cable OBD usb cable. The MHD N54 is very easy to used provided you are replacing the same battery. Otherwise, if you have a different battery, then it require coding the new battery. Hope this help! Good Luck!
Many thanks ... my BMW 1 series petrol 2005 model has the same fault. . The fault is intermittent where all the relays and solenoids all jump ... but when pressing "START" button ???........NOTHING . Mine is RHD and if i wiggle the wires around the OBD2 it starts and i'm "good to go" . I bought the car cheap as i was desperate but i think this is why ? . For one of the best car makers ever why make a back circuit ... for a back up circuit... for a up circuit... for a back up circuit ??? / WHEN I WONT START ANYWAY LOL . Many Thanks
I have a bmw 645ci that had a starter issue a few mths ago i replaced it and the car started up fine. the car is a project so its been sitting. i tried to start it up yesterday and it doesn't turn over no clicking from the starter. the ivm and battery was replaced also. just tried what you did in the vid and no luck everything else works on the dash and diamond key. im stumped
This just happened to a customers car. Car sat for a while he drove it over to me, the battery died, when i went to give it a jump. Now it just cranks with no start. Smh
Hello Sadel, I have to say you and your presentation are remarkable. I replaced the battery in my wife’s 2006 BMW 530 XI. I thought I took all precautions but I was wrong. I must have shorted out the battery sensor. I put a new battery in, and nothing happened with the starting circuit only messages that nothing else was working. Thank God, that when I looked on UA-cam, I decided to watch your video. You are very clear, concise and patient while speaking in a manner that we can all understand. I did exactly what you said by unhooking the connector to the starting sensor. I inserted the key into the ignition heard the steering operate and when I push the start button, the car started immediately. I can’t praise you or thank you enough for all your efforts, and I will certainly follow any and all of your videos. I highly suggest anybody with an issue look up DTE engineering and watch Sadel’s 0:48 videos. Thank you again so much!!
The thing that springs to mind is the battery was changed, why? Probably flat so would have been charged or jumped. The best way to fry the IBS is to either direct from the battery like normal cars. You can't do that as have to do either from remote contacts under the bonnet
So the ibs is not required for starting but is on the wake up circuit for ews and powertrain etc , wonder if the battery was changed for this faulty ibs ? when i saw the esl code i went for that too , great video and follow up diag with the scope , that sort of information is often overlooked , thanks again.
Correct, it's not required for starting but in this case took down the wake-up circuit which affected the ews/cas. Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed!
Hello Sadel, Your explanation of how the CAS works, along with the wake-up signal, was excellent. Thank you for sharing the details of the system with us. A++ once again.
Thank you for your service. I had so many problem related to this issue. I have finally found your video, did all the troubleshooting, replace the battery, register the battery, reset the ELV and CAS counter, after 3wks the problem came back. So now I think I have isolated to the battery sensor. So many hours wasted on this car troubleshooting and the inconvenience car not working in the middle of nowhere. This video was a Gems!!!! Thank you...
Thank you Sadel. That's exactly how i like to diagnose & share with others using a lab scope and checking signals with the connector connector & disconnected to see who is supplying voltage and that way we know the voltages with a known good waveform. That's how i do it & i take notes on every car. As you know most manufacturers don't give us enough information on waveforms neither voltages. Thanks for sharing.
There are options when dealing with module replacement on these, including CAS module, where you don't have to use the dealership and get new from them. Like some of my videos, the option could be to get a used unit and program it to your brothers car via special tooling.
to show what can happen after a battery replacement if not done with care can damage the battery sensor on the negative cable and it shorts out the wake up signal and prevents it from starting at all.

you would need to have the ability to do a complete system scan to get an idea of what codes are logged for a sense of direction.
@@DTEAuto no codes ive reset the cas and dme with my foxwell scanner
Hi Sadel your video just saved me so much money i would like to know where did retrieve the schematics on the bmw as depicted in your video
glad to hear that, and it's from a paid service online, there's a few that offer them (Alldata, Identifix, Mitchell, etc)

Thank you! Cheers!
When changing battery on newer models maybe 06 and newer. You have to program the battery, then this wont happen.
Registering the battery doesn't have an affect on if the ibs is shorted

Awesome diag
Thanks and thank you for watching
👍👍👍 Excellent
What does this cost to fix this?
would consist of diagnostic time cost and then the cost of the new negative battery cable with sensor on it and the labor
great easy to understand your explaination of the cas circut and its modules glad i found your video keep posting more thank you
Glad to hear you got something out of it, feel free to explore all the videos on the channel and sub for support. Thank you for watching

BMW stealership quoted my brother $4500 for CAS module replacement after les Schwab replaced his battery. Do you think this is legit?
