- It's about time I fixed something on the BMW 840ci 8-Series, we are starting with the ashtray that I sat on and broke. It's quite a complicated assembly, and quite fiddly to work on, but I will show you how it works and how to repair it.

FYI a gentlemen in the facebook group is producing them! Just bought one and saved myself the headache of putting my old one back together :)
Thanks for the info!
Good to see the e31 is getting fixed. My e38 is getting some small dings fixed too due to my stupidity
Thanks! Hope yours get sorted too!
Brilliant Tim. If I ever manage to get the car back together I'll have a go at mine, it's been broken ever since I bought the car. I am making slow progress, it fights me at every opportunity I'm afraid. I think I will post some stuff onto the forum, as I have done hours of research and it may help others. No doubt speak soon via the forum. Incidentally, BMW dealer was struggling trying to find the part numbers for 2 of the heater hoses, they then phoned me and said they thought that they had found the right parts, could I confirm it from an e-mail attachment. Attachment was from Meeknet! So there you are, you officially know more than BMW!
There you go then Bob, it took me a while to work it out in the first place - that's why I put it up on meeknet!
Ah, my favorite breakfast graced with a 20 minute long Bee Em Dubya video from Timm! What a lovely way to start the day.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Certainly! Though I don't envy you trying to shimmy that pin back in place. That looked like a right headache. :P

Timm, top tip any insert that is flaking as you showed at the very beginning can be sprayed with clear coat and problem solved, no more flaking.
Thanks Bobby, that sounds like a good plan!
Great video - you’re missing a spire clip & a washer I think, that’s why the fourth screw is all the way through.
Thanks Mark, great info!
Admire your attitude. Best of luck with both the cars
Thanks Aidan!
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. Great detailed video my friend. Nice hair cut. ✌🏾
ALVIN! Great to hear from you - I'll tell my wife, she does the haircuts!
Hay Timm, what can I put on my soft touch paint, to keep it from peeling?
I sent you a question please reply
I've been told a couple of times that the best solution is to use clear-coat (probably 2-part for longevity) but have not tried that myself@@alvintobe5566
Eh Timmy lad,
You don't even smoke fella,
Should turn it into a sweetie tray 😋
That's true - but I do use the lighter socket for the tyre puffer-upper
I have my ashtray removed at the minute it actually makes a perfect sized cup holder..fits a Costa cup perfectly 😂 However will refit and repair mine now i’ve see this 👍🏻
Great tip!
Brilliant video as always Timm 👍
Thanks Robert!
Great video Timm, I love to see these small engineering marvels that you'll only see once or twice in a cars lifetime 👍👍👍
Thanks Bobby!
Nice one Tim, my ashtray has never stayed closed since I've owned the car, thanks to your video I think I now understand better why, I suspect the latching mechanism is not in the slot as it should be. My car has wood trim so I'll need to be extra careful that I don't scratch it!
Good man, let us know what you find!
Amazing video!
You are so kind
Mines missing the spring. I fixed and replaced rhe damper and the pins so it looks snd works but the spring is gone.
I assume theyre unobtainable now. But seeinf that i guess i could make one out of spring wire.
World news just too depressing so glad to watch your useful video thanks Timm. I wonder if you have suggestions for a glovebox lid that won't open on my e39? I prised it open once then closed it later thinking I can do it again. No such luck (without doing damage). It isn't locked but the spring thing gone I guess.
Thanks Bernard, I would put the problem on bimmerforums.com as I haven't got a clue!
You didn't have to replace yours, but those torque motors are a pain to try and find replacements. I needed two for the accessory drawers on my E65 which were "shooting" out from the centre console due to the motors being worn out at 225K kms. I ended up having to buy a used complete centre console from Latvia to get both drawers which had good motors. I did finally find a source for new motors on eBay but they were over $20 CDN each which was around the total price I paid for the used Latvian bits.
They used to be so easy to get hold of, we used to use them at work in one of our products, but now - no chance!
2009 650i convertible 45000 miles looking for your video on the upper radiator hose turning brown. Thx Fred
My pleasure Fred!
Thank you, Timm! Great tutorial as usual. This job is queued on my 840 :) one question - those pins - you put them from inside; would they work if inserted from outside?
Very informative video, thank you! Where did you get the pin from? Is it available somewhere to order?
I found it on the transmission tunnel, unbroken. If it was broken then I would have replaced it by melting a nut into the outer aperture and screwing in a bolt and locked it in place with Loctite
Great video as always. My ashtray doesn't want to shut so now I know what to do and look for. Are the pivot pins still available as one of mine is missing and I had to fashion another from the spares pot but its not ideal.
Repair done this afternoon. I owe you a pint!
They are not available, but there will be something that fits from Amazon, just a matter of experimentation. I was planning on melting a nut into the outer aperture and fitting a bolt with Loctite to hold it in place - then I found the pin!
I managed to fashion a replacement with a longer pin and once threw the holes I sqeezed the end which seems to work!.
hi Timm, can you provide some help, trying to solve an issue with an e36 m52 engine... Read your inpa manual for the analog values but I am still lost
My car shows
adaptations value add 1: - 5 / add 2: - 7
adaptations value multiply 1: 2 / multiply 2: - 3
?
injectors are cleaned and tested, new FPR, new vacuum hoses and gasket for the throttle body, new hose for the icv?! and the values are as above
Blocked catalytic converter I'm afraid - that's why you have completely different values one bank to the other. Get sports cats fitted by a custom shop, you will go a lot faster - that's what I did!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thank you for replying to my question, i really appreciate it
sadly the cat convertors are not the issue for sure, will get the exhaust manifolds expected by a shop for cracking ... nothing else comes to mind
once again, thank you
Silly question maybe but could you not have removed the cigarette lighter socket? Maybe I missed something.
I had a go to the point where the plastic looked like it was going to come a cropper - one take during the video explained that - but I missed it out!
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation good to know! Thanks Timm.
so whens the car being fixed timm any news ?
Out of the body shop this week, up to Lee's the week after, thanks!
